Abstract:V.I.Arnold posed the following problem several times:for given integers n≥2 and m≥3,what is the maximum number Z(m,n) of isolated zeros of the Abelian integrals of all polynomial 1-forms of degree n along all possible families of closed algebraic curves of degree m? We know from the Poincare-Pontryagin Theorem that,if the Abelian integral is not identically equal to zero,then A(n) = Z(n +1,n) gives the maximal number of limit cycles bifurcated from the periodic annuli of all Hamiltonian systems of degree n under any polynomial perturbations of degree n.Hence,Arnold named this problem the weakened 16th problem of Hilbert.During the past 30 years there was some progress on the research of this problem,but it is still quite far to solve it completely.In this paper we give a brief introduction of the problem and some relative research works.

Abstract:This note is purely expository. In the course of the Kolmogorov-Arnold solution of Hilbert's 13th problem on superpositions there appeared the notion of basic embedding. A subset K of R^2 is basic if for each continuous function f:K->R there exist continuous functions g,h:R->R such that f(x,y)=g(x)+h(y) for each point (x,y) in K. We present descriptions of basic subsets of the plane (with a proof) and description of graphs basically embeddable into the plane (solutions of Arnold's and Sternfeld's problems). We present some results and open problems on the smooth version of the property of being basic. This note is accessible to undergraduates and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians. The two sections can be read independently on each other.

Abstract:Hilbert-Arnold (HA) problem, motivated by Hilbert 16-th problem, is to prove that for a generic k-parameter family of smooth vector fields {\dot x=v(x,\eps)}_{\eps\in B^k} on the 2-dimensional sphere S^2 has uniformly bounded number of limit cycles (isolated periodic solutions), denoted by LC(\eps), over the parameter \eps, i.e. max_{\eps \in B^k} LC(\eps) <= K < \infty for some K. The HA problem can be reduced to so-called Local Hilbert-Arnold (LHA) problem. Suppose that a generic k-parameter family {\dot x=v(x,\eps)}_{\eps \in B^k}, x\in S^2 for some parameter \eps^*\in B^k has a polycycle (separatrix polygon) gamma consisting of equilibrium points as vertices and connecting separatrices as sides. LHA problem is to estimate B(k)--- the maximal number of limit cycles that can be born in a neighbourhood of gamma for a field \dot x=v(x,\eps), where \eps is close to \eps^*.

Abstract:For a given natural number $n$, the second part of Hilbert's 16th Problem asks whether there exists a finite upper bound for the maximum number of limit cycles that planar polynomial vector fields of degree $n$ can have. This maximum number of limit cycle, denoted by $H(n)$, is called the $n$th Hilbert number. It is well-established that $H(n)$ grows asymptotically as fast as $n^2 \log n$. A direct consequence of this growth estimation is that $H(n)$ cannot be bounded from above by any quadratic polynomial function of $n$. Recently, the authors of the paper [Exploring limit cycles of differential equations through information geometry unveils the solution to Hilbert's 16th problem. Entropy, 26(9), 2024] affirmed to have solved the second part of Hilbert's 16th Problem by claiming that $H(n) = 2(n - 1)(4(n - 1) - 2)$. Since this expression is quadratic in $n$, it contradicts the established asymptotic behavior and, therefore, cannot hold. In this note, we further explore this issue by discussing some counterexamples.

Abstract:We prove that to each real singularity $f: (\mathbb{R}^{n}, 0) \to (\mathbb{R}^k, 0)$ with $k\geq 2$ one can associate systems of differential equations $\mathfrak{g}^{k}_f$ which are pushforwards in the category of $\mathcal{D}$-modules over $\mathbb{R}^{k}$ of the sheaf of real analytic functions on the total space of the Milnor fibration. We then use this to study Hilbert's 16th problem on polynomial dynamical systems in the plane.

Abstract:We focus on the second part of Hilbert's 16th problem and provide an upper bound on the number of limit cycles that a polynomial, differential, planar system may have, depending exclusively on the degree $n$ of the system. Such a bound turns out to be a polynomial of degree $4$ in $n$. More specifically, if $H(n)$ indicates the maximum number of limit cycles among planar, differential, polynomial systems of degree $n$, then \begin{gather} H(n)\le \dfrac52 n^4-\dfrac{23}2 n^3+ \dfrac{43}2n^2-\dfrac{37}2n+7\,\,\,\, \mbox{if $n$ is even, and} \nonumber H(n)\le \dfrac52 n^4-\dfrac{23}2 n^3+ \dfrac{41}2n^2-\dfrac{33}2n+6\,\,\,\, \mbox{if $n$ is odd}.\nonumber \end{gather} For quadratic systems, we find $H(2)=4$. Our proof is entirely variational and utilizes in a fundamental way tools and facts from global analysis to the point that no particular expertise in dynamical systems is necessary or required.

Abstract:In singularity theory or algebraic geometry, it is natural to investigate possible Hilbert functions for special algebras $A$ such as local complete intersections or more generally Gorenstein algebras. The sequences that occur as {the} Hilbert functions of standard graded complete intersections are well understood classically thanks to Macaulay and Stanley. Very little is known in the local case except in codimension two. In this paper we characterise the Hilbert functions of quadratic Artinian complete intersections of codimension three. Interestingly we prove that a Hilbert function is admissible for such a Gorenstein ring if and only if is admissible for such a complete intersection. We provide an effective construction of a local complete intersection for a given Hilbert function. We prove that the symmetric decomposition of such a complete intersection ideal is determined by its Hilbert function.

Abstract:According to the Kouchnirenko formula, the Milnor number of a generic isolated singularity with given Newton polyhedron is equal to the alternating sum of certain volumes associated to the Newton polyhedron. In this paper we obtain a non-negative analogue (i.e. without negative summands) of the Kouchnirenko formula. The analogue relies on the non-negative formula for the monodromy operator from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1405.5355" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1405.5355">arXiv:1405.5355</a> and formulas for the Milnor number from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/9901107" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/9901107">arXiv:math/9901107</a> . As an application we give a criterion for the Arnold's monotonicity problem (1982-16) in arbitrary dimension, which leads to complete solution in dimension up to $4$ and partial solution in dimension $5$. The latter relies on the classification of thin triangulations (or vanishing local h-polynomial) in dimension $2$ and $3$ from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1909.10843" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.10843">arXiv:1909.10843</a> (and from the book by Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky) and contains examples which differ dramatically from the ones which arise in dimension up to $3$ in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1705.00323" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1705.00323">arXiv:1705.00323</a> (see also <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2001.10316" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.10316">arXiv:2001.10316</a> ). Some of the $4$-dimensional examples were first described in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1309.0630" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1309.0630">arXiv:1309.0630</a> in the context of the local monodromy conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that the number of limit cycles generated by a small non-conservative perturbation of a Hamiltonian polynomial vector field on the plane, is bounded by a double exponential of the degree of the fields. This solves the long-standing tangential Hilbert 16th problem. The proof uses only the fact that Abelian integrals of a given degree are horizontal sections of a regular flat meromorphic connection (Gauss-Manin connection) with a quasiunipotent monodromy group.

Abstract:This text is intended to become in the long run Chapter 3 of our long saga dedicated to Riemann, Ahlfors and Rohlin. Yet, as its contents evolved as mostly independent (due to our inaptitude to interconnect both trends as strongly as we wished), it seemed preferable to publish it separately. More factually, our account is an attempt to get familiarized with the current consensus about Hilbert's 16th in degree 8. This is a nearly finished piece of mathematics, thanks heroic breakthroughs by Viro, Fiedler, Korchagin, Shustin, Chevallier, Orevkov, yet still leaving undecided six tantalizing bosons among a menagerie of 104 logically possible distributions of ovals (respecting Bézout, Gudkov periodicity, and the Fiedler-Viro imparity law sieving away 4+36 schemes). This quest inevitably involves glimpsing deep into the nebula referrable to as Viro's patchworking, and the likewise spectacular obstructional laws of Fiedler, Viro, Shustin, Orevkov. In the overall, the game is much comparable to a pigeons hunting video-game, where 144 birds are liberated in nature, with some of them strong enough to fly higher and higher in the blue sky as to rejoin the stratospheric paradise of eternal life (construction of a scheme in the algebro-geometric category). Some other, less fortunate, birds were killed (a long time ago) and crashed down miserably over terrestrial crust (prohibition). Alas, the hunt is unfinished with still six birds, apparently too feeble to rally safely the paradise, yet too acrobatic for any homosapiens being skillful enough to shoot them down.

Abstract:These are notes for four lectures given at the 2010 CIMPA Research School "Automorphic Forms and L-functions" in Weihai, China. The lectures focused on a Burgess-like subconvex bound for twisted Hilbert modular L-functions published jointly with Valentin Blomer in the same year. They discussed the proof in some detail, especially how spectral theory can be used to estimate the relevant shifted convolution sums efficiently. They also discussed briefly an application for the number of representations by a totally positive ternary quadratic form over a totally real number field.

Abstract:In his solution of Hilbert's 17th problem Artin showed that any positive definite polynomial in several variables can be written as the quotient of two sums of squares. Later Reznick showed that the denominator in Artin's result can always be chosen as an $N$-th power of the squared norm of the variables and gave explicit bounds on $N$. By using concepts from quantum information theory (such as partial traces, optimal cloning maps, and an identity due to Chiribella) we give simpler proofs and minor improvements of both real and complex versions of this result. Moreover, we discuss constructions of Hilbert identities using Gaussian integrals and we review an elementary method to construct complex spherical designs. Finally, we apply our results to give improved bounds for exponential quantum de Finetti theorems in the real and in the complex setting.

Eighth problem of the Arnold trivium

Abstract:We give a full and detailed solution of eighth Arnold's trivium problem. We find critical points of a smooth function on a given one-parametric two-dimensional surface with Lagrange multipliers method. Basic Morse theory and Poincare-Hopf theorem makes it possible to determine a genus of this surface and gives a beautiful training example of Morse surgery on a two-dimensional surface of genus $g = 6$.

Abstract:In his monograph on Infinite Abelian Groups, I. Kaplansky raised three ``test problems" concerning their structure and multiplicity. As noted by Azoff, these problems make sense for any category admitting a direct sum operation. Here, we are interested in the operator theoretic version of Kaplansky's second problem which asks: if $A$ and $B$ are operators on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space and $A \oplus A$ is equivalent to $B \oplus B$ in some (precise) sense, is $A$ equivalent to $B$? We examine this problem under a strengthening of the hypothesis, where a ``primitive" square root $J_2(A)$ of $A\oplus A$ is assumed to be equivalent to the corresponding square root $J_2(B)$ of $B \oplus B$. When ``equivalence" refers to similarity of operators and $A$ is a compact operator, we deduce from this stronger hypothesis that $A$ and $B$ are similar. We exhibit a counterexample (due to J. Bell) of this phenomenon in the setting of unital rings. Also, we exhibit an uncountable family $\{ U_\alpha\}_{\alpha \in \Omega}$ of unitary operators, no two of which are unitarily equivalent, such that each $U_\alpha$ is unitarily equivalent to $J_n(U_\alpha)$, a ``primitive" $n^{th}$ root of $U_\alpha \oplus U_\alpha \oplus \cdots \oplus U_\alpha$.

Hilbert irreducibility for integral points on punctured linear algebraic groups

Abstract:Let $K$ be a number field, let $X$ be a smooth integral variety over $K$, and assume that there exists a finite set of finite places $S$ of $K$ such that the $S$-integral points on $X$ are dense. Then the combined conjectures of Campana and Corvaja-Zannier predict that, for every closed subscheme $Z$ of $X$ of codimension at least two, there exists a finite extension $L$ of $K$ and a finite set of finite places $T$ of $L$ such that the $T$-integral points on $(X\setminus Z)_L$ are not strongly thin. The main goal of the present paper is to show that this property holds for all connected linear algebraic groups. Our result builds mainly on recent work on a Hilbert irreducibility type theorem for connected algebraic groups, the purity of strong approximation for semi-simple simply connected quasi-split linear algebraic groups, and the relation between integral strong approximation and the Hilbert property.

Integral points on coarse Hilbert moduli schemes

Abstract:We continue our study of integral points on moduli schemes by combining the method of Faltings (Arakelov, Parsin, Szpiro) with modularity results and Masser-Wüstholz isogeny estimates. In this work we explicitly bound the height and the number of integral points on coarse Hilbert moduli schemes outside the branch locus. In the first part we define and study coarse Hilbert moduli schemes with their heights and branch loci. In the second part we establish the effective Shafarevich conjecture for abelian varieties $A$ over a number field $K$ such that $A_{\bar{K}}$ has CM or $A_{\bar{K}}$ is of GL2-type and isogenous to all its $G_\mathbb Q$-conjugates. In the third part we continue our explicit study of the Parsin construction given by the forgetful morphism of Hilbert moduli schemes. We now work out our strategy for arbitrary number fields $K$ and we explicitly bound the number of polarizations and module structures on abelian varieties over $K$ with real multiplications. In the last part we illustrate our results by applying them to two classical surfaces first studied by Clebsch (1871) and Klein (1873): We explicitly bound the Weil height and the number of their integral points.

Abstract:For a {bounded} non-negative self-adjoint operator acting in a complex, infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space H and possessing a dense range R we propose a new approach to characterisation of phenomenon concerning the existence of subspaces M\subset H such that M\capR=M^\perp\capR=\{0\}. We show how the existence of such subspaces leads to various {pathological} properties of {unbounded} self-adjoint operators related to von Neumann theorems \cite{Neumann}--\cite{Neumann2}. We revise the von Neumann-Van Daele-Schmüdgen assertions \cite{Neumann}, \cite{Daele}, \cite{schmud} to refine them. We also develop {a new systematic approach, which allows to construct for any {unbounded} densely defined symmetric/self-adjoint operator T infinitely many pairs of its closed densely defined restrictions T_k\subset T such that \dom(T^* T_{k})=\{0\} (\Rightarrow \dom T_{k}^2=\{0\}$) k=1,2 and \dom T_1\cap\dom T_2=\{0\}, \dom T_1\dot+\dom T_2=\dom T.

Abstract:We solve Hilbert's fifth problem for local groups: every locally euclidean local group is locally isomorphic to a Lie group. Jacoby claimed a proof of this in 1957, but this proof is seriously flawed. We use methods from nonstandard analysis and model our solution after a treatment of Hilbert's fifth problem for global groups by Hirschfeld.
