Abstract:We study effects of Gribov copies in the Maximal Abelian gauge in $SU(3)$ lattice gluodynamics. We confirm earlier results that with effective gauge fixing algorithm one finds Gribov copies of the maximal Abelian gauge which produce about 90\% of the nonabelian string tension after Abelian projection. At the same time using much less effective relaxation algorithm one finds Gribov copies with nice Abelian dominance for the string tension.

Abstract:For SU(2) lattice gauge theory we study numerically the infrared behavior of the Landau gauge ghost and gluon propagators with the special accent on the Gribov copy dependence. Applying a very efficient gauge fixing procedure and generating up to 80 gauge copies we find that the Gribov copy effect for both propagators is essential in the infrared. In particular, our best copy dressing function of the ghost propagator approaches a plateau in the infrared, while for the random first copy it still grows. Our best copy zero-momentum gluon propagator shows a tendency to decrease with growing lattice size which excludes singular solutions. Our results look compatible with the so-called decoupling solution with a non-singular gluon propagator. However, we do not yet consider the Gribov copy problem to be finally resolved.

Abstract:The reaction pp -> pf (eta pi pi) ps has been studied at 450 GeV/c. There is clear evidence for an a2(1320)pi decay mode of the eta2(1645) and eta2(1870). In addition, there is evidence for an a0(980)pi$ decay mode of both resonances and an f2(1270)eta decay mode of the eta2(1870). No evidence is found for a JPC = 2++ a2(1320)pi wave.

Abstract:Lattice results for the gluon propagator in SU(2) pure gauge theory obtained on large lattices are presented. Simulated annealing is used throughout to fix the Landau gauge. We concentrate on checks for Gribov copy effects and for scaling properties. Our findings are similar to the ones in the SU(3) case, supporting the decoupling-type infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator.

Abstract:We review the equivalence of maximal center gauge fixing to the problem of finding the best fit, to a given lattice gauge field, by a thin vortex configuration. This fit is necessarily worst at the location of P-plaquettes. We then compare the fits achieved in Gribov copies generated by (i) over-relaxation; (ii) over-relaxation after Landau gauge preconditioning; and (iii) simulated annealing. Simulated annealing yields the best fit if all links on the lattice are included, but the situation changes if we consider only the lattice volume exterior to P-plaquettes. In this exterior region, the fit is best for Gribov copies generated by over-relaxation, and worst for Gribov copies generated after Landau gauge preconditioning. The two fitting criteria (including or not including the P-plaquettes) yield string tensions differing by -34% to +20% respectively, relative to the full string tension. Our usual procedure (``quenched minimization'') seems to be a compromise between these criteria, and yields string tensions at an intermediate value close to the full string tension.

Abstract:Lattice gauge fixing is required to compute gauge-variant quantities, for example those used in RI-MOM renormalization schemes or as objects of comparison for model calculations. Recently, gauge-variant quantities have also been found to be more amenable to signal-to-noise optimization using contour deformations. These applications motivate systematic parameterization and exploration of gauge-fixing schemes. This work introduces a differentiable parameterization of gauge fixing which is broad enough to cover Landau gauge, Coulomb gauge, and maximal tree gauges. The adjoint state method allows gradient-based optimization to select gauge-fixing schemes that minimize an arbitrary target loss function.

Systematic Uncertainties from Gribov Copies in Lattice Calculation of Parton Distributions in the Coulomb gauge

Abstract:Recently, it has been proposed to compute parton distributions from boosted correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge within the framework of Large-Momentum Effective Theory. This method does not involve Wilson lines and could greatly improve the efficiency and precision of lattice QCD calculations. However, there are concerns about whether the systematic uncertainties from Gribov copies, which correspond to the ambiguity in lattice gauge-fixing, are under control. This work gives an assessment of the Gribov copies' effect in the Coulomb-gauge-fixed quark correlators. We utilize different strategies for the Coulomb-gauge fixing, selecting two different groups of Gribov copies based on the lattice gauge configurations. We test the difference in the resulted spatial quark correlators in the vacuum and a pion state. Our findings indicate that the statistical errors of the matrix elements from both Gribov copies, regardless of the correlation range, decrease proportionally to the square root of the number of gauge configurations. The difference between the strategies does not show statistical significance compared to the gauge noise. This demonstrates that the effect of the Gribov copies can be neglected in the practical lattice calculation of the quark parton distributions.

Abstract:We review the status of our recent work on the gauge-fixing approach to lattice chiral gauge theories. New numerical results in the reduced version of a model with a U(1) gauge symmetry are presented which strongly indicate that the factorization of the correlation functions of the left-handed neutral and right-handed charged fermion fields, which we established before in perturbation theory, holds also nonperturbatively.

Abstract:For the Lorentz gauge the influence of Gribov copies on the fermion propagator is investigated in quenched lattice compact QED. In the Coulomb phase zero-momentum modes of the gauge fields are shown to be the main reason for a significant deviation from ordinary perturbation theory.

Abstract:Three techniques for performing gauge-invariant, noncompact lattice simulations of nonabelian gauge theories are discussed. In the first method, the action is not itself gauge invariant, but a kind of lattice gauge invariance is restored by random compact gauge transformations during the successive sweeps of the simulation. This method has been applied to pure $SU(2)$ gauge theory on a $12^4$ lattice, and Wilson loops have been measured at strong coupling, $\beta=0.5$. These Wilson loops display a confinement signal not seen in simulations performed earlier with the same action but without the random gauge transformations. In the second method, the action is gauge symmetrized by integrations over the group manifold. The third method is based upon a new, noncompact form of the action that is exactly invariant under lattice gauge transformations. The action is a natural discretization of the classical Yang-Mills action.

Gribov Problem in the Eletroweak and Gluon Confined Theories

Abstract:We show that gauge fields after a spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) mechanism do not have a Gribov problem along the broken directions. In order to make this proof, we describe a gauge fixing procedure inspired on Morse theory leading to the concept of a gauge fixing generating functional. This approach is specially suited in order to understand the unitary gauges of t Hooft. The conclusion is that after a SSB process, the generalized Faddeev-Popov operator acquires a positive definite value along the broken directions. We show how this works in the eletroweak $SU(2)XU(1)$ theory, where such a result is in fact expected as in this case the gauge fields acquire masses after the SSB. Then we apply this development to the $SL(3,c)$ confining model of [1]. The final result explains why such confining mechanism is actually a solution to Gribov problem for the confined gauge fields. These cases show that although confinement is not a general effect of the solution of the Gribov problem, as we can infer from the eletroweak example, its solution indeed seems to be necessary in order to achieve confinement. In the end, these conclusions allow us to speculate that the strong interaction confinement may be the result of some hidden SSB mechanism yet to be described.

Abstract:A lattice gauge theory framework for simulations on graphic processing units (GPUs) using NVIDIA’s CUDA is presented. The code comprises template classes that take care of an optimal data pattern to ensure coalesced reading from device memory to achieve maximum performance. In this work we concentrate on applications for lattice gauge fixing in 3+1 dimensional SU(3) lattice gauge field theories. We employ the overrelaxation, stochastic relaxation and simulated annealing algorithms which are perfectly suited to be accelerated by highly parallel architectures like GPUs. The applications support the Coulomb, Landau and maximally Abelian gauges. Moreover, we explore the evolution of the numerical accuracy of the SU(3) valued degrees of freedom over the runtime of the algorithms in single- (SP) and double-precision (DP). Therefrom we draw conclusions on the reliability of SP and DP simulations and suggest a mixed-precision scheme that performs the critical parts of the algorithm in full DP while retaining 80%–90% of the SP performance. Finally, multi-GPUs are adopted to overcome the memory constraint of single GPUs. A communicator class which hides the MPI data exchange at the boundaries of the lattice domains, via the low bandwidth PCI-Bus, effectively behind calculations in the inner part of the domain is presented. Linear scaling using 16 NVIDIA Tesla C2070 devices and a maximum performance of 3.5 Teraflops on lattices of size down to 643×256 is demonstrated.

Abstract:We explore the performance of CUDA in performing Landau gauge fixing in Lattice QCD, using the steepest descent method with Fourier acceleration. The code performance was tested in a Tesla C2070, Fermi architecture. We also present a study of the string tension at finite temperature in the confined phase. The string tension is extracted from the color averaged free energy and from the color singlet using Landau gauge fixing.

Abstract:We report on the work presented in Phys. Lett. B712 (2012) 97, where a new one-parameter family of Landau gauges has been proposed for Yang-Mills theories, inspired by an analogy with disordered systems in condensed matter physics. This is based on a particular average over Gribov copies which avoids the Neuberger zero problem of the standard Fadeev-Popov construction. The proposed gauge fixing can be formulated as a local renormalizable field theory in four dimensions and is well-suited for analytical calculations. A remarkable feature is that, for what concerns the calculation of ghost and gauge field correlators, the gauged-fixed action is perturbatively equivalent to a simple massive extension of the Faddeev-Popov action. The renormalization group flow of the theory admits infrared safe trajectories, with no Landau pole. The one-loop calculations of Yang-Mills two-point correlators show remarkable agreement with lattice simulations all the way to the deep infrared.

Abstract:We develop a gauge invariant, Loop-String-Hadron (LSH) based representation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory defined on a general graph consisting of vertices and half-links. Inspired by weak coupling studies, we apply this technique to maximal tree gauge fixing. This allows us to develop a fully gauge fixed representation of the theory in terms of LSH quantum numbers. We explicitly show how the quantum numbers in this formulation directly relate to the variables in the magnetic description. In doing so, we will also explain in detail the way that the Kogut-Susskind formulation, prepotentials, and point splitting, work for general graphs. In the appendix of this work we provide a self-contained exposition of the mathematical details of Hamiltonian pure gauge theories defined on general graphs.

The center-symmetric Landau gauge meets the lattice

Abstract:A lattice implementation of the recently introduced center-symmetric Landau gauge is discussed and its predictions confronted with numerical Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the link average and the link correlators computed in that gauge are order parameters of the confinement-deconfinement transition at nonzero temperature. Strictly speaking, this requires a specific treatment of the Gribov copies that we discuss in detail. The numerical simulations comply with the theoretical predictions for the link average computed below and above the deconfinement temperature. Our results show that, within appropriately chosen gauges, one can construct local order parameters for center symmetry, as proxies for the non-local Polyakov loop.

Abstract:Quantum simulation of synthetic dynamic gauge field has attracted much attentions in recent years. There are two traditional ways to simulate gauge theories. One is to directly simulate the full Hamiltonian of gauge theories with local gauge symmetries. And the other is to engineer the projected Hamiltonian in one gauge subsector. In this work, we provide the third way towards the simulation of gauge theories based on \emph{gauge fixing}. To demonstrate this concept, we fix the gauge of an Ising lattice gauge field coupled with spinless fermions on a ladder geometry. After the gauge fixing, this gauge theory is reduced to a simpler model, in which fermions hop on a ladder with a fluctuating dynamical $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ flux. Then we shows that this model can be realized via Floquet engineering in ultracold atomic gases. By analytical and numerical studies of this dynamical flux model, we deduce that there is confinement to deconfinement phase transition in the original unfixed gauge theory. This work paves the way to quantum simulate lattice gauge theory using the concept of gauge fixing, relevant both for condensed matter and high energy physics.
