Abstract:Small muon beams increase the luminosity of a muon collider. Reducing the momentum and position spreads of muons reduces emittance and leads to small, cool beams. Ionization cooling has been observed at the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment. 6D emittance reduction by a factor of 100, 000 has been achieved in simulation. Another factor of 5 in cooling would meet the basic requirements of a high luminosity muon collider. In this paper we compare, for the first time, the amount of RF needed in a cooling channel to previous linacs. We also outline three methods aimed to help achieve a final factor of 5 in 6D cooling.

Abstract:Large emittance muon beam must be reduced or cooled both longitudinally and transversely before it can be accelerated in an accelerator complex for a neutrino factory or a muon collider. In practice, ionization cooling is considered to be one of the most promising transverse cooling schemes for muon beams. When traversing an ionization cooling channel, which consists of absorbers and low frequency (~ 201-MHz) RF cavities and superconducting solenoidal magnets, a muon beam loses its energy in the absorbers first and then re-gains the lost longitudinal energy from the RF cavities, therefore results in a net transverse emittance reduction. In principle, this cooling process can be repeated over many times depending on the cooling requirement. Moreover, muons have finite lifetime (~ 2 micro-second at rest), manipulation of the muon beam, such as the transverse cooling, has to be fast. This requires the normal conducting low frequency RF cavities have the highest possible accelerating gradient. This paper reports the status and progress of RF cavity R&D for muon ionization cooling channels with emphasis on RF cavity conditioning and operation in a strong magnetic field. The research work is supported and conducted in MUCOOL collaboration under the US NFMCC (Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration).

Abstract:A 10 MeV/c positive muon beam was stopped in helium gas of a few mbar in a magnetic field of 5 T. The muon "swarm" has been efficiently compressed from a length of 16 cm down to a few mm along the magnetic field axis (longitudinal compression) using electrostatic fields. The simulation reproduces the low energy interactions of slow muons in helium gas. Phase space compression occurs on the order of microseconds, compatible with the muon lifetime of 2 μs. This paves the way for the preparation of a high-quality low-energy muon beam, with an increase in phase space density relative to a standard surface muon beam of 10^{7}. The achievable phase space compression by using only the longitudinal stage presented here is of the order of 10^{4}.

Abstract:Muon colliders and neutrino factories are attractive options for future facilities aimed at achieving the highest lepton-antilepton collision energies and precision measurements of parameters of the Higgs boson and the neutrino mixing matrix. The performance and cost of these depend on how well a beam of muons can be cooled. Recent progress in muon cooling design studies and prototype tests nourishes the hope that such facilities can be built during the coming decade. The status of the key technologies and their various demonstration experiments is summarized.

Abstract:A complete scheme for production and cooling a muon beam for three specified muon colliders is presented. Parameters for these muon colliders are given. The scheme starts with the front end of a proposed neutrino factory that yields bunch trains of both muon signs. Emittance exchange cooling in slow helical lattices reduces the longitudinal emittance until it becomes possible to merge the trains into single bunches, one of each sign. Further cooling in all dimensions is applied to the single bunches in further slow helical lattices. Final transverse cooling to the required parameters is achieved in 50 T solenoids using high Tc superconductor at 4 K. Preliminary simulations of each element are presented.

Abstract:Muon ionization cooling provides the only practical solution to prepare high brilliance beams necessary for a neutrino factory or muon colliders. The muon ionization cooling experiment (MICE) is currently under development at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in UK. The experiment comprises a dedicated beam line to generate a range of input emittance and momentum of a muon beam, with time-of-flight and Cherenkov detectors to ensure a pure muon beam. A first measurement of emittance is performed in the upstream magnetic spectrometer with a scintillating fiber tracker. A cooling section will then follow, alternating energy loss in liquid hydrogen and RF acceleration. A second spectrometer identical to the first one and a particle identification system provide a measurement of the outgoing emittance. In September 2009, it is expected that the beam and some detectors will be in the final commissioning phase and the time of the first measurement of input beam emittance only months away. The plan of steps of measurements of emittance and cooling that will follow in the rest of 2009 and later.

Abstract:Progress on six dimensional ionization muon cooling with relatively small rings of magnets is described. Lattices being explored include scaling sector cyclotrons with edge focusing and strong focusing, fixed field alternating gradient (FFAG) rings. Ionization cooling is provided by high pressure hydrogen gas which removes both transverse and longitudinal momentum. Lost longitudinal momentum is replaced using radio frequency (RF) cavities, giving a net transverse emittance reduction. The longer path length in the hydrogen of higher momentum muons decreases longitudinal emittance at the expense of transverse emittance. Thus emittance exchange allows these rings to cool in all six dimensions and not just transversely. Alternatively, if the RF is located after the ring, it may be possible to cool the muons by stopping them as they spiral adiabatically into a central swarm. As momentum goes to zero, the momentum spread goes to zero. The resulting cooled muons can lead to an intense muon beam which could be a source for neutrino factories or muon colliders.

Abstract:Accelerated muon beams have been considered for the next-generation studies of high-energy lepton–antilepton collisions and neutrino oscillations. However, high-brightness muon beams have not yet been produced. The main challenge for muon acceleration and storage stems from the large phase-space volume occupied by the beam, derived from the production mechanism of muons through the decay of pions. The phase-space volume of the muon beam can be decreased through ionization cooling. Here we show that ionization cooling leads to a reduction in the transverse emittance of muon beams that traverse lithium hydride or liquid hydrogen absorbers in the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment. Our results represent a substantial advance towards the realization of muon-based facilities that could operate at the energy and intensity frontiers.

Abstract:Muon ionization cooling R&D is important for a neutrino factory and future muon collider. In addition to theoretical studies, much progress has been made in muon cooling channel hardware R&D since NuFact-2006. This paper reports the progress on hardware R&D that includes experimental RF test programs using 805-MHz RF cavity, superconducting (SC) solenoids (coupling coils), 201-MHz RF cavity, liquid hydrogen absorber and MUCOOL Test Area (MTA) experiment preparation for beam tests.

Abstract:Experiments with muons ( μ + ) and muonium atoms ( μ + e − ) offer several promising possibilities for testing fundamental symmetries. Examples of such experiments include the search for a muon electric dipole moment, measurement of the muon g − 2 and experiments with muonium from laser spectroscopy to gravity experiments. These experiments require high quality muon beams with small transverse size and high intensity at low energy. At the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, we are developing a novel device that reduces the phase space of a standard μ + beam by a factor of 10 10 with 10 − 3 efficiency. The phase space compression is achieved by stopping a standard μ + beam in cryogenic helium gas. The stopped μ + are manipulated into a small spot using complex electric and magnetic fields in combination with gas density gradients. From there, the muons are extracted into the vacuum and into a field-free region. Various aspects of this compression scheme have been demonstrated. In this article the current status will be reported.

Abstract:Muon ionization cooling involves passing particles through solid or liquid absorbers. Careful simulations are required to design muon cooling channels. New features have been developed for inclusion in the transfer map code COSY Infinity to follow the distribution of charged particles through matter. To study the passage of muons through material, the transfer map approach alone is not sufficient. The interplay of beam optics and atomic processes must be studied by a hybrid transfer map--Monte-Carlo approach in which transfer map methods describe the deterministic behavior of the particles, and Monte-Carlo methods are used to provide corrections accounting for the stochastic nature of scattering and straggling of particles. The advantage of the new approach is that the vast majority of the dynamics are represented by fast application of the high-order transfer map of an entire element and accumulated stochastic effects. The gains in speed are expected to simplify the optimization of cooling channels which is usually computationally demanding. Progress on the development of the required algorithms and their application to modeling muon ionization cooling channels is reported.

Quantum Mechanical Treatment of Transit-Time Optical Stochastic Cooling of Muons

Abstract:Ultra-fast stochastic cooling would be desirable in certain applications, for example, in order to boost final luminosity in a muon collider or neutrino factory, where short particle lifetimes severely limit the total time available to reduce beam phase space. But fast cooling requires very high-bandwidth amplifiers so as to limit the incoherent heating effects from neighboring particles. A method of transit-time optical stochastic cooling has been proposed which would employ high-gain, high-bandwidth, solid-state lasers to amplify the spontaneous radiation from the charged particle bunch in a strong-field magnetic wiggler. This amplified light is then fed back onto the same bunch inside a second wiggler, with appropriate phase delay to effect cooling. But before amplification, the usable signal from any one particle is quite small, on average much less than one photon per pass, suggesting that the radiation should be treated quantum mechanically, and raising doubts as to whether this weak signal even contains sufficient phase information necessary for cooling, and whether it can be reliably amplified to provide the expected cooling on each pass. A careful examination of the dynamics, where the radiation and amplification processes are treated quantum mechanically, indicates that fast cooling is in principle possible, with cooling rates which essentially agree with classical calculations, provided that the effects of the unavoidable amplifier noise are included. Thus, quantum mechanical uncertainties do not present any insurmountable obstacles to optical cooling, but do establish a lower limit on cooling rates and achievable emittances.

Final Cooling With Thick Wedges for a Muon Collider

Abstract:In the final cooling stages for a muon collider, the transverse emittances are reduced while the longitudinal emittance is allowed to increase. In previous studies, Final cooling used absorbers within very high field solenoids to cool low-momentum muons. Simulations of the systems did not reach the desired cooling design goals. In this study, we develop and optimize a different conceptual design for the final 4D cooling channel, which is based on using dense wedge absorbers. We used G4Beamline to simulate the channel and Python to generate and analyze particle distributions. We optimized the design parameters of the cooling channel and produced conceptual designs (corresponding to possible starting points for the input beam) which achieve transverse cooling in both x and y by a factor of $\approx$ 3.5. These channels achieve a lower transverse and longitudinal emittance than the best previously published design.

Abstract:The muon collider has the potential to be a powerful tool for the exploration of frontiers in particle physics. In order to reach high luminosity, the 6D emittance of the muon beam needs to be reduced by several orders of magnitude. The cooling process for a muon collider involves two parts; initial six-dimensional cooling and final transverse cooling. This paper focuses on the former and proposes a conceptual design of the rectilinear cooling channel with additional dipole magnets. In this paper, we first introduce a general method for designing the rectilinear cooling channel. Subsequently, we apply this method to develop two rectilinear cooling channels before and after a bunch merging system. Furthermore, we investigate the impact on cooling performance by employing $\pi$-mode RF cavities and considering the effect of errors in the magnetic and RF fields.
