Abstract:We reconstruct the evolutionary path followed by cataclysmic variables (CVs) from the observed mass-radius relationship of their donor stars. Along the way, we update the semi-empirical CV donor sequence of Knigge (2006) and present a comprehensive review of the link between CV evolution and donor physics. After calibrating state-of-the art stellar models for use in the CV setting, we fit self-consistent theoretical evolution sequences to the observed donor masses and radii. In the standard model of CV evolution, AML below the period gap is assumed to be driven solely by gravitational radiation (GR), while AML above the gap is usually described by a magnetic braking prescription due to Rappaport, Verbunt & Joss (1983). We find that simple scaled versions of these recipes match the data quite well. However, the optimal scaling factors turn out to be f_GR = 2.47 +/- 0.22 below the gap and f_MB = 0.66 +/- 0.05 above. The implications and applications of our results include: (1) The revised evolution sequence yields correct locations for the CV minimum period and the upper edge of the period gap; the standard sequence does not. (2) A comparison of predicted and observed WD temperatures suggests an even higher value for f_GR, but this is sensitive to the assumed WD mass. (3) The absolute donor magnitudes predicted by our sequences can be used to set firm lower limits on the distances toward CVs. (4) Both standard and revised sequences predict that short-period CVs should be susceptible to dwarf nova (DN) eruptions, consistent with observations. However, both sequences also predict that the DNe fraction among long-period CVs should decline with P_orb. Observations suggest the opposite behaviour. (5) The ratio of long-period CVs to short-period, pre-bounce CV is about 3x higher for the revised sequence than the standard one. This may resolve a long-standing problem in CV evolution. Sodium enhancement in evolved cataclysmic variables

Abstract:We present follow-up spectroscopy of 21 cataclysmic variables (CVs) with evolved secondaries and ongoing or recently-terminated mass transfer. Evolutionary models predict that the secondaries should have anomalous surface abundances owing to nuclear burning in their cores during their main-sequence evolution and subsequent envelope stripping by their companion white dwarfs. To test these models, we measure sodium (Na) abundances of the donors from the Fraunhofer "D" doublet. Accounting for interstellar absorption, we find that {\it all} objects in our sample have enhanced Na abundances. We measure 0.3 $\lesssim$ [Na/H] $\lesssim$ 1.5 dex across the sample, with a median [Na/H] = 0.956 dex, i.e., about an order of magnitude enhancement over solar values. To interpret these values, we run MESA binary evolution models of CVs in which mass transfer begins just as the donor leaves the main sequence. These generically predict Na enhancement in donors with initial donor masses $\gtrsim 1\,M_{\odot}$, consistent with our observations. In the models, Na enrichment occurs in the donors' cores via the NeNa cycle near the end of their main-sequence evolution. Na-enhanced material is exposed when the binaries reach orbital periods of a few hours. Donors with higher initial masses are predicted to have higher Na abundances at fixed orbital period owing to their higher core temperatures during main-sequence evolution. The observed [Na/H] values are on average $\approx$0.3 dex higher than predicted by the models. Surface abundances of evolved CV donors provide a unique opportunity to study nuclear burning products in the cores of intermediate-mass stars.

Abstract:We review the recent knowledge base pertaining to causes for mass accretion variations (high/low states) in highly magnetic cataclysmic variables (i.e. polars). We then examine what theory has to say about the properties of the secondary stars (the mass donors) with respect to those CVs with very short orbital periods. Finally, we use recent observations of EF Eri in an extended low state to provide direct observational evidence which shows that this CV, as well as a few others, likely contain very low mass, sub-stellar secondary stars.

Abstract:We give an updated version of the analytical equation of state used in the Cambridge stellar evolution code (STARS) as a free to use open-source package that we have used to model cool white dwarfs down to temperatures $\log_{10}(T_\mathrm{eff}/\mathrm{K})\:=\;3$. With this update in the STARS code we model the secular evolution of cataclysmic variable (CV) stars using a double dynamo model wherein there is an interplay between two $\alpha-\Omega$ dynamos, one in the convective envelope and the other at the boundary of a slowly rotating shrinking radiative core and the growing convective envelope. We confirm that this model provides a physical formalism for the interrupted magnetic braking paradigm. In addition, our model also provides a mechanism for extra angular momentum loss below the period gap. We construct the relative probability distribution of orbital periods $P_\mathrm{orb}$ using the {mass} distribution of white dwarfs in cataclysmic variables and find that our model excellently reproduces the period gap and the observed period minimum spike in CV distribution. We also compare the evolutionary trajectories from our model with those of other empirical models and find agreement between the two. We also report good agreement between our modelled systems and observational data.

Abstract:The eclipsing and double-lined spectroscopic binary V380 Cyg is an extremely important probe of stellar evolution: its primary component is a high-mass star at the brink of leaving the main sequence whereas the secondary star is still in the early part of its main sequence lifetime. We present extensive high-resolution echelle and grating spectroscopy from Ondrejov, Calar Alto, Victoria and La Palma. We apply spectral disentangling to unveil the individual spectra of the two stars and obtain new spectroscopic elements. The secondary star contributes only about 6% of the total light, which remains the main limitation to measuring the system's characteristics. We determine improved physical properties, finding masses 13.1 +/- 0.3 and 7.8 +/- 0.1 M_sun, radii 16.2 +/- 0.3 and 4.06 +/- 0.08 R_sun, and effective temperatures 21750 +/- 280 and 21600 +/- 550 K, for the primary and secondary components respectively. We perform a detailed abundance analysis by fitting non-LTE theoretical line profiles to the disentangled spectrum of the evolved primary star, and reveal an elemental abundance pattern reminiscent of a typical nearby B star. Contrary to the predictions of recent theoretical evolution models with rotational mixing, no trace of abundance modifications due to the CNO cycle are detected. No match can be found between the predictions of these models and the properties of the primary star: a mass discrepancy of 1.5 M_sun exists and remains unexplained.

Evolution of Cataclysmic Variables with Binary-Driven Mass-Loss during Nova Eruptions

Abstract:The discrepancies between observations and theoretical predictions of cataclysmic variables (CVs) suggest that there exists unknown angular momentum loss mechanism(s) besides magnetic braking and gravitational radiation. Mass loss due to nova eruptions belongs to the most likely candidates. While standard theory assumes that mass is lost in the form of radiation driven, optically thick wind (fast wind; FW), recent numerical simulations indicate that most of the mass loss is initiated and shaped by binary interaction. We explore the effect of this binary-driven mass-loss (BDML) on the CV evolutions assuming a major fraction of the lost mass leaves the system from the outer Lagrangian point. Different from the traditional continuous wind picture, we consider the mass loss process to be instantaneous, because the duration of nova eruptions is much shorter than the binary evolutionary timescale. Our detailed binary evolution calculations reveal the following results. (1) BDML seems able to provide extra angular momentum loss below the period gap. The mass transfer rates at a given orbital period occupy a large range, in agreement with the observed secular mass transfer rate distribution in CVs. (2) The enhanced mass transfer rates do not lead to runaway mass transfer process, and allow the white dwarfs to grow mass $\lesssim 0.1\,M_{\odot}$. (3) BDML can cause both positive and negative variations of the orbital period induced by nova eruptions, in line with observations, and can potentially explain the properties of some peculiar supersoft X-ray sources likely CAL 87, 1E 0035.4$-$7230, and RX J0537.7$-$7034.

Abstract:Context. AM CVn binaries are potential progenitors of thermonuclear supernovae and strong sources of persistent gravitational wave radiation. For a long time, it has been believed that these systems cannot descend from cataclysmic variables (CVs), at least not in large numbers, because the initial conditions need to be fine-tuned and, even worse, the resulting surface hydrogen abundance would be high enough to be detected which contradicts a defining feature of AM CVn binaries. Aims. Here we show that both claimed weaknesses of the CV formation channel for AM CVn binaries are model-dependent and rely on poorly constrained assumptions for magnetic braking. Methods. We performed binary evolution simulations with the MESA code for different combinations of post-common-envelope white dwarf and companion masses as well as orbital periods assuming the CARB model for strong magnetic braking. Results. We found that AM CVn binaries with extremely-low surface hydrogen abundances are one natural outcome of CV evolution if the donor star has developed a non-negligible helium core prior to the onset of mass transfer. In this case, after hydrogen envelope exhaustion during CV evolution, the donor becomes degenerate and its surface hydrogen abundance substantially drops and becomes undetectable. Our simulations also show that the CV formation channel is able to explain the observed AM CVn binaries with very low mass and bloated donor stars (Gaia14aae and ZTF J1637+49). Conclusions. CVs with evolved donors are likely the progenitors of at least a fraction of AM CVn binaries.

Mass Transfer and Stellar Evolution of the White Dwarfs in AM CVn Binaries

Abstract:We calculate the stellar evolution of both white dwarfs (WDs) in AM CVn binaries with orbital periods of $P_{\mathrm{orb}} \approx 5-70$ minutes. We focus on the cases where the donor starts as a $M_{\mathrm{He}} < 0.2 \, M_{\odot}$ Helium WD and the accretor is a $M_{\mathrm{WD}} > 0.6 \, M_{\odot}$ WD. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), we simultaneously evolve both WDs assuming conservative mass transfer and angular momentum loss from gravitational radiation. This self-consistent evolution yields the important feedback of the properties of the donor on the mass transfer rate, $\dot{M}$, as well as the thermal evolution of the accreting WD. Consistent with earlier work, we find that the high $\dot{M}$'s at early times forces an adiabatic evolution of the donor for $P_{\mathrm{orb}} < 30$ minutes so that its mass-radius relation depends primarily on its initial entropy. As the donor reaches $ M_{\mathrm{He}} \approx 0.02-0.03 \, M_{\odot}$ at $P_{\mathrm{orb}} \simeq 30 $ minutes, it becomes fully convective and could lose entropy and expand much less than expected under further mass loss. However, we show that the lack of reliable opacities for the donor's surface inhibit a secure prediction for this possible cooling. Our calculations capture the core heating that occurs during the first $\approx 10^7$ years of accretion and continue the evolution into the phase of WD cooling that follows. When compared to existing data for accreting WDs, as seen by Cheng and collaborators for isolated WDs, we also find that the accreting WDs are not as cool as we would expect given the amount of time they have had to cool.

Evolution of AM CVn binaries with WD donors

Abstract:The evolution and stability of mass transfer of CO+He WD binaries are not well understood. Observationally they may emerge as AM CVn binaries and are important gravitational wave (GW) emitters. In this work, we have modeled the evolution of double WD binaries with accretor masses of $0.50 - 1.30\;M_{\odot}$ and donor masses of $0.17\; - 0.45\;M_{\odot}$ using the detailed stellar evolution code MESA. We find that the evolution of binaries with same donor masses but different accretor masses is very similar and binaries with same accretor masses but larger He donor masses have larger maximum mass transfer rates and smaller minimum orbital periods. We also demonstrate that the GW signal from AM CVn binaries can be detected by space-borne GW observatories, such as LISA, TianQin. And there is a linear relation between the donor mass and gravitational wave frequency during mass transfer phase. In our calculation, all binaries can have dynamically stable mass transfer, which is very different from previous studies. The threshold donor mass of Eddington-limited mass transfer for a given accretor WD mass is lower than previous studies. Assuming that a binary may enter common envelope if the mass transfer rate exceeds the maximum stable burning rate of He, we provide a new criterion for double WDs surviving mass transfer, which is below the threshold of Eddington-limit. Finally, we find that some systems with ONe WDs in our calculation may evolve into detached binaries consisting of neutron stars (NSs) and extremely low mass He WDs and further ultra-compact X-ray binaries.

The evolution and impact of 3000 M$_\odot$ stars in the early Universe

Abstract:We present evolutionary models of massive, accreting population III stars with constant and variable accretion rates until the end of silicon burning, with final masses of 1000 - 3000 Msol. In all our models, after the core-hydrogen-burning phase, the star expands towards the red side of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is where it spends the rest of its evolution. During core helium burning, the models exhibit an outer convective envelope as well as many large intermediate convective zones.These intermediate zones allow for strong internal mixing to occur which enriches the surface in helium. The effect of increasing metallicity at a constant accretion rate of 10^{-3} Msol/yr shows an increase in the lifetime, final mass and distribution of helium in the envelope. Our fiducial model with mass of 3000 Msol has a final surface helium abundance of 0.74 and 9% of its total mass or 50% of the core mass, has a value of Gamma1 < 4/3 at the end of core silicon burning. If the collapse of the core is accompanied by the ejection of the envelope above the carbon-oxygen core, this could have a significant impact on the chemical evolution of the surroundings and subsequent stellar generations. The model has a final log(N/O) ~ 0.45, above the lower limit in the recently detected high-redshift galaxy GN-z11. We discuss the impact of a single 3000 Msol star on chemical, mechanical and radiative feedback, and present directions for future work.

Abstract:Binary evolution is indispensable in stellar evolution to understand the formation and evolution of most peculiar and energetic objects, such as binary compact objects, Type Ia supernovae, X-ray binaries, cataclysmic variables, blue stragglers, hot subdwarfs, and central binaries in planetary nebulae. Mass transfer in binary stars can change the evolutionary path and fate of the corresponding objects relative to what is expected from single stellar evolution. What is the critical mass ratio at which unstable mass transfer occurs is an unsolved fundamental problem in binary evolution. To resolve this issue, we construct the thermal equilibrium mass loss model and derive critical mass ratios for both thermal timescale mass transfer and unstable mass transfer, the latter of which occurs when the outer Lagrangian point, L2, is overfilled. Using several 3.2 Msun stellar models as examples, we study the stellar response to thermal equilibrium mass loss and present the thresholds for thermal timescale mass transfer. We study the possible mass transfer channels of binary systems containing a 3.2 Msun donor star, taking into account thermal timescale mass transfer, unstable mass transfer through L2, and dynamical timescale mass transfer. We repeat this simulation for a grid of donor stars with different masses (from 0.1 to 100 Msun with Z = 0.02) and at different evolutionary stages, and present our results. The results show that unstable mass transfer due to the overfilling of the outer Lagrangian point may also play an essential role in the formation of common envelopes for late red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch donors.

Abstract:Novae are cataclysmic variable binary systems in which a white dwarf primary is accreting material from a low mass companion. The importance of this accretion takes on added significance if the WD can increase its mass to reach the Chandrasekhar limit thus exploding as a Type Ia supernova. In this study we accrete material of Solar composition onto carbon-oxygen white dwarfs of 0.70, 1.00 and 1.35 Msun with accretion rates from 1.6e-10 to 1.6e-6 Msun per yr. We have utilized the MESA stellar evolution code for our modeling and evolve them for many nova cycles or, in some cases, evolution to a red giant stage. Differing behaviors occur as a function of both the WD mass and the accretion rate. For the lower WD masses, the models undergo recurrent hydrogen flashes at low accretion rates; for higher accretion rates, steady-burning of hydrogen occurs and eventually gives way to recurrent hydrogen flashes. At the highest accretion rates, these models go through a steady-burning phase but eventually transition into red giants. For the highest white dwarf mass recurrent hydrogen flashes occur at lower accretion rates but for higher rates the models exhibit steady-burning interspersed with helium flashes. We find that for all our models that undergo recurrent hydrogen flashes, as well as the steady-burning models that exhibit helium flashes, the mass of the WD continues to grow toward the Chandrasekhar limit. These results suggest that the accretion of Solar abundance material onto carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in cataclysmic variable systems, the single degenerate scenario, is a viable channel for progenitors of Type Ia supernova explosions.
Cataclysmic variable evolution and the white dwarf mass problem: A Review

Abstract:Although the theory of cataclysmic variable (CV) evolution is able to explain several observational aspects, strong discrepancies have existed for decades between observations and theoretical predictions of the orbital period distribution, the location of the minimum period, and the space density of CVs. Moreover, it has been shown in the last decade that the average white dwarf (WD) mass observed in CVs is significantly higher than the average mass in single WDs or in detached progenitors of CVs, and that there is an absence of helium-core WDs in CVs which is not observed in their immediate detached progenitors. This highly motivated us to revise the theory of CV formation and evolution. A new empirical model for angular momentum loss in CVs was developed in order to explain the high average WD mass observed and the absence of systems with helium-core WDs. This model seems to help, at the same time, with all of the above mentioned disagreements between theory and observations. Moreover, it also provides us with a very likely explanation for the existence of low-mass WDs without a companion. Here we will review the standard model for CV evolution and the disagreements that have existed for decades between simulations and observations with their possible solutions and/or improvements. We will also summarize the recently confirmed disagreement related to the average WD mass and the fraction of helium-core WDs among CVs, as well as the development of an empirical model that allows us to solve all the disagreements, discussing the physics that could be involved.

On the White Dwarf Mass Problem of Cataclysmic Variables

Abstract:Recent observations show that white dwarfs (WDs) in cataclysmic variables (CVs) have an average mass significantly higher than isolated WDs and WDs in post-common envelope binaries (PCEBs), which are thought to be the progenitors of CVs. This suggests that either the WDs have grown in mass during the PCEB/CV evolution or the binaries with low-mass WDs are unable to evolve to be CVs. In this paper, we calculate the evolution of accreting WD binaries with updated hydrogen accumulation efficiency and angular momentum loss (AML) prescriptions. We show that thermal-timescale mass transfer is not effective in changing the average WD mass distribution. The WD mass discrepancy is most likely related to unstable mass transfer in WD binaries, in which an efficient mechanism of AML is required.
Constraining the Evolution of Cataclysmic Variables via the Masses and Accretion Rates of their Underlying White Dwarfs

Abstract:We report on the masses ($M_\mathrm{WD}$), effective temperatures ($T_\mathrm{eff}$) and secular mean accretion rates ($\langle \dot{M} \rangle$) of 43 cataclysmic variable (CV) white dwarfs, 42 of which were obtained from the combined analysis of their $\mathit{Hubble~Space~Telescope}$ ultraviolet data with the parallaxes provided by the Early Third Data Release of the $\mathit{Gaia}$ space mission, and one from the white dwarf gravitational redshift. Our results double the number of CV white dwarfs with an accurate mass measurement, bringing the total census to 89 systems. From the study of the mass distribution, we derive $\langle M_\mathrm{WD} \rangle = 0.81^{+0.16}_{-0.20}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$, in perfect agreement with previous results, and find no evidence of any evolution of the mass with orbital period. Moreover, we identify five systems with $M_\mathrm{WD} < 0.5\mathrm{M_\odot}$, which are most likely representative of helium-core white dwarfs, showing that these CVs are present in the overall population. We reveal the presence of an anti-correlation between the average accretion rates and the white dwarf masses for the systems below the $2-3\,$h period gap. Since $\langle \dot{M} \rangle$ reflects the rate of system angular momentum loss, this correlation suggests the presence of an additional mechanism of angular momentum loss that is more efficient at low white dwarf masses. This is the fundamental concept of the recently proposed empirical prescription of consequential angular momentum loss (eCAML) and our results provide observational support for it, although we also highlight how its current recipe needs to be refined to better reproduce the observed scatter in $T_\mathrm{eff}$ and $\langle \dot{M} \rangle$, and the presence of helium-core white dwarfs.

Abstract:The predicted and observed space density of cataclysmic variables (CVs) have been for a long time discrepant by at least an order of magnitude. The standard model of CV evolution predicts that the vast majority of CVs should be period bouncers, whose space density has been recently measured to be $\rho \lesssim 2 \times 10^{-5}$ pc$^{-3}$. We performed population synthesis of CVs using an updated version of the Binary Stellar Evolution (BSE) code for single and binary star evolution. We find that the recently suggested empirical prescription of consequential angular momentum loss (CAML) brings into agreement predicted and observed space densities of CVs and period bouncers. To progress with our understanding of CV evolution it is crucial to understand the physical mechanism behind empirical CAML. Our changes to the BSE code are also provided in details, which will allow the community to accurately model mass transfer in interacting binaries in which degenerate objects accrete from low-mass main-sequence donor stars.

Abstract:We consider donor evolution and mass transfer in the microquasar V404 Cyg/GS 2023+338. Based on X-ray observations of its two outbursts, its average mass accretion rate is substantially lower than our model mass-loss rate from its low-mass giant donor. A likely solution to this discrepancy is that a large fraction of the mass flowing from the donor leaves the binary in the form of outflows from the accretion disc around the accretor. The outflow can be parameterizes by the fractions of the mass and angular momentum leaving the system. We calculate the latter as a function of the radius of the accretion disc from which the outflow takes place. We then perform detailed evolutionary calculations for V404 Cyg. Given our estimated average accretion rate, $>$70 per cent of the mass lost from the donor has to leave the binary. The allowed solutions for the actual donor mass loss rate are parameterized by our two outflow parameters. Our results are in agreement with the observed outflows from the outer disc as well as with the variable near-Eddington accretion observed during the outbursts, compatible with outflows from the vicinity of the black hole. We then calculate the expected rate of the orbital period change. Its future measurements can constrain the presence of an outflow in V404 Cyg and its parameters.

Abstract:The distinguishing feature of the evolution of close binary stars is the role played by the mass exchange between the component stars. Whether the mass transfer is dynamically stable is one of the essential questions in binary evolution. In the limit of extremely rapid mass transfer, the response of a donor star in an interacting binary becomes asymptotically one of adiabatic expansion. We use the adiabatic mass loss model to systematically survey the thresholds for dynamical timescale mass transfer over the entire span of possible donor star evolutionary states. We also simulate mass loss process with isentropic envelopes, the specific entropy of which is fixed to be that at the base of the convective envelope, to artificially mimic the effect of such mass loss in superadiabatic surface convection regions, where the adiabatic approximation fails. We illustrate the general adiabatic response of 3.2 Msun donor stars at different evolutionary stages. We extend our study to a grid of donor stars with different masses (from 0.1 to 100 Msun with Z = 0.02) and at different evolutionary stages. We proceed to present our criteria for dynamically unstable mass transfer in both tabular and graphical forms. For red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch donors in systems with such mass ratios, they may have convective envelopes deep enough to evolve into common envelopes on a thermal timescale, if the donor star overfills its outer Lagrangian radius. Our results show that the red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars tend to be more stable than previously believed, and this may be helpful to explain the abundance of observed post-AGB binary stars with an orbital period of around 1000 days.

The Identification of Hydrogen-Deficient Cataclysmic Variable Donor Stars

Abstract:We have used ATLAS12 to generate hydrogen-deficient stellar atmospheres to allow us to construct synthetic spectra to explore the possibility that the donor stars in some cataclysmic variables (CVs) are hydrogen deficient. We find that four systems, AE Aqr, DX And, EY Cyg, and QZ Ser have significant hydrogen deficits. We confirm that carbon and magnesium deficits, and sodium enhancements, are common among CV donor stars. The three Z Cam systems we observed are found to have solar metallicities and no abundance anomalies. Two of these objects, Z Cam and AH Her, have M-type donor stars; much cooler than expected given their long orbital periods. By using the combination of equivalent width measurements and light curve modeling, we have developed the ability to account for contamination of the donor star spectra by other luminosity sources in the binary. This enables more realistic assessments of secondary star metallicities. We find that the use of equivalent width measurements should allow for robust metallicities and abundance anomalies to be determined for CVs with M-type donor stars.
