Abstract:We consider donor evolution and mass transfer in the microquasar V404 Cyg/GS 2023+338. Based on X-ray observations of its two outbursts, its average mass accretion rate is substantially lower than our model mass-loss rate from its low-mass giant donor. A likely solution to this discrepancy is that a large fraction of the mass flowing from the donor leaves the binary in the form of outflows from the accretion disc around the accretor. The outflow can be parameterizes by the fractions of the mass and angular momentum leaving the system. We calculate the latter as a function of the radius of the accretion disc from which the outflow takes place. We then perform detailed evolutionary calculations for V404 Cyg. Given our estimated average accretion rate, $>$70 per cent of the mass lost from the donor has to leave the binary. The allowed solutions for the actual donor mass loss rate are parameterized by our two outflow parameters. Our results are in agreement with the observed outflows from the outer disc as well as with the variable near-Eddington accretion observed during the outbursts, compatible with outflows from the vicinity of the black hole. We then calculate the expected rate of the orbital period change. Its future measurements can constrain the presence of an outflow in V404 Cyg and its parameters.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the non - conservative mass transfer process in the binary star system V404 Cyg/GS 2023+338 and its impact on the system's evolution. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **The problem of mismatched mass transfer and accretion rate**: According to X - ray observations, the average accretion rate of V404 Cyg during the two outbursts is much lower than the mass loss rate of the low - mass giant donor predicted by the model. This indicates that a part of the mass leaves the binary star system in some form, not just being accreted by the black hole. 2. **Determination of outflow parameters**: To explain the above - mentioned mismatch phenomenon, the author assumes that a part of the mass flowing out from the donor leaves the binary star system in the form of an outflow. These outflows can be described by two parameters: the proportion of mass and angular momentum leaving the system. The author calculates these parameters and explores their impact on the evolution of the binary star system. 3. **Evolution model of the binary star system**: Based on the above assumptions, the author conducts detailed evolutionary calculations to determine the donor mass loss rate of V404 Cyg. The results show that more than 70% of the donor mass loss must leave the binary star system in the form of an outflow. 4. **Prediction of orbital period change**: The author also calculates the orbital period change rate due to the outflow and points out that future measurements of orbital period changes can further constrain the existence of the outflow and its parameters. ### Formula analysis 1. **Change in Roche lobe radius**: \[ \frac{d \ln R_2}{d \ln M_2}=-\frac{5}{3}+\frac{2 \beta M_2}{M_1}+\frac{2}{3}(1 - \beta)\frac{M_2}{M}+2(1 - \beta)\alpha\frac{M_1}{M} \] where \( R_2 \) is the Roche lobe radius of the donor, \( M_2 \) is the mass of the donor, \( M_1 \) is the mass of the black hole, \( \beta \) is the proportion of mass accreted onto the black hole, and \( \alpha \) is the proportion of angular momentum carried by the outflow. 2. **Orbital period change rate**: \[ \frac{\dot{P}}{P}=-\frac{\dot{M_2}}{M_2}\left[3 - 3 \beta\frac{M_2}{M_1}-(1 - \beta)\frac{M_2}{M}-3(1 - \beta)\alpha\frac{M_1}{M}\right] \] where \( P \) is the orbital period and \( \dot{M_2} \) is the donor mass loss rate. ### Conclusion Through these calculations and analyses, the author concludes that the mass transfer in V404 Cyg is non - conservative, and most of the mass flowing out from the donor leaves the binary star system in the form of an outflow. This finding not only explains the observed mismatch between the accretion rate and the theoretical model, but also provides important clues for further research on the evolution of binary star systems.
