Abstract:We study quantum localization phenomena in chaotic systems with a parameter. The parametric motion of energy levels proceeds without crossing any other and the defined avoided crossings quantify the interaction between states. We propose the elimination of avoided crossings as the natural mechanism to uncover localized structures. We describe an efficient method for the elimination of avoided crossings in chaotic billiards and apply it to the stadium billiard. We find many scars of short periodic orbits revealing the skeleton on which quantum mechanics is built. Moreover, we have observed strong interaction between similar localized structures.

Abstract:We numerically show the changing of eigenstates of the Hamiltonian as a function of a control parameter governing the strength of a non-integrable perturbation. The eigenstates change abruptly at avoided level crossing. After the avoided level crossing, they tend to restore their original form before the avoided level crossing, and exchange their distribution, especially for those which can be treated as isolated two-body collisions. But in general, the eigenstates have some changings after the avoided crossing, and the symmetries of the system are broken down locally at this kind of avoided level crossings.

Abstract:We present a finite element algorithm that computes eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator for two-dimensional problems with homogeneous Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions or combinations of either for different parts of the boundary. In order to solve the generalized eigenvalue problem, we use an inverse power plus Gauss-Seidel algorithm. For Neumann boundary conditions the method is much more efficient than the equivalent finite difference algorithm. We have cheked the algorithm comparing the cumulative level density of the espectrum obtained numerically, with the theoretical prediction given by the Weyl formula. A systematic deviation was found. This deviation is due to the discretisation and not to the algorithm. As an application we calculate the statistical properties of the eigenvalues of the acoustic Bunimovich stadium and compare them with the theoretical results given by random matrix theory.

Abstract:The nodal domains of eigenvectors of the discrete Schrodinger operator on simple, finite and connected graphs are considered. Courant's well known nodal domain theorem applies in the present case, and sets an upper bound to the number of nodal domains of eigenvectors: Arranging the spectrum as a non decreasing sequence, and denoting by $\nu_n$ the number of nodal domains of the $n$'th eigenvector, Courant's theorem guarantees that the nodal deficiency $n-\nu_n$ is non negative. (The above applies for generic eigenvectors. Special care should be exercised for eigenvectors with vanishing components.) The main result of the present work is that the nodal deficiency for generic eigenvectors equals to a Morse index of an energy functional whose value at its relevant critical points coincides with the eigenvalue. The association of the nodal deficiency to the stability of an energy functional at its critical points was recently discussed in the context of quantum graphs [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1103.1423" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1103.1423">arXiv:1103.1423</a>] and Dirichlet Laplacian in bounded domains in $R^d$ [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1107.3489" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1107.3489">arXiv:1107.3489</a>]. The present work adapts this result to the discrete case. The definition of the energy functional in the discrete case requires a special setting, substantially different from the one used in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1103.1423" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1103.1423">arXiv:1103.1423</a>,<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1107.3489" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1107.3489">arXiv:1107.3489</a>] and it is presented here in detail.

Abstract:Sturmian eigenstates specified by stationary scattering boundary conditions are particularly useful in contexts such as forming simple separable two nucleon t matrices, and are determined via solution of generalised eigenvalue equation using real and symmetric matrices. In general, the spectrum of such an equation may contain complex eigenvalues. But to each complex eigenvalue there is a corresponding conjugate partner. In studies using realistic nucleon--nucleon potentials, and in certain positive energy intervals, these complex conjugated pairs indeed appear in the Sturmian spectrum. However, as we demonstrate herein, it is possible to recombine the complex conjugate pairs and corresponding states into a new, sign--definite pair of real quantities with which to effect separable expansions of the (real) nucleon--nucleon reactance matrices.

Abstract:We consider the Schrödinger operator in a bounded domain Rn(n=2,3) with Neumann boundary condition. We suppose that this domain contains small deformable inclusions, i.e. regions where the potentials do not have the same values as the exterior medium. Our goal is to construct an asymptotic formula for the case of multiple and simple eigenvalue problems. We find an expansion that highlights the relation between the deformation parameters and the eigenvalues. The problem is devoted to a domain containing a finite number of inhomogeneities. Also, we focus on the interface of a small inclusion.

Abstract:We consider a 1D $2\times 2$ matrix-valued operator \eqref{System0} with two semiclassical Schrödinger operators on the diagonal entries and small interactions on the off-diagonal ones. When the two potentials cross at a turning point with contact order $n$, the corresponding two classical trajectories at the crossing level intersect at one point in the phase space with contact order $2n$. We compute the transfer matrix at this point between the incoming and outgoing microlocal solutions and apply it to the semiclassical distribution of resonances at the energy crossing level. It is described in terms of a generalized Airy function. This result generalizes \cite{FMW1} to the tangential crossing and \cite{AFH1} to the crossing at a turning point.

Abstract:We are interested in the effect of Dirichlet boundary conditions on the nodal length of Laplace eigenfunctions. We study random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the two dimensional square and find a two terms asymptotic expansion for the expectation of the nodal length in any square of side larger than the Planck scale, along a denisty one sequence of energy levels. The proof relies on a new study of lattice points in small arcs, and shows that the said expectation is independent of the position of the square, giving the same asymptotic expansion both near and far from the boundaries.

Abstract:We study eigenstates of chaotic billiards in the momentum representation and propose the radially integrated momentum distribution as useful measure to detect localization effects. For the momentum distribution, the radially integrated momentum distribution, and the angular integrated momentum distribution explicit formulae in terms of the normal derivative along the billiard boundary are derived. We present a detailed numerical study for the stadium and the cardioid billiard, which shows in several cases that the radially integrated momentum distribution is a good indicator of localized eigenstates, such as scars, or bouncing ball modes. We also find examples, where the localization is more strongly pronounced in position space than in momentum space, which we discuss in detail. Finally applications and generalizations are discussed.

Abstract:By means of a generalized quartet mechanism we show in a model independent way that a BRST quantization on an inner product space leads to physical states of the form |ph>=e^{[Q, \psi]} |ph>_0 where Q is the nilpotent BRST operator, \psi a hermitian fermionic gauge fixing operator, and |ph>_0 BRST invariant states determined by a hermitian set of BRST doublets in involution. |ph>_0 does not belong to an inner product space although |ph> does. Since the BRST quartets are split into two sets of hermitian BRST doublets there are two choices for |ph>_0 and the corresponding \psi. When applied to general, both irreducible and reducible, gauge theories of arbitrary rank within the BFV formulation we find that |ph>_0 are trivial BRST invariant states which only depend on the matter variables for one set of solutions, and for the other set |ph>_0 are solutions of a Dirac quantization. This generalizes previous Lie group solutions obtained by means of a bigrading.

Abstract:A systematic numerical technique for the calculation of unstable periodic orbits in the stadium billiard is presented. All the periodic orbits up to order $p=11$ are calculated and then used to calculate the average Lyapunov exponent and the topological entropy. Applications to semiclassical quantization and to experiments in mesoscopic systems and microwave cavities are noted.

Abstract:It was recently shown that the nodal deficiency of an eigenfunction is encoded in the spectrum of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators for the eigenfunction's positive and negative nodal domains. While originally derived using symplectic methods, this result can also be understood through the spectral flow for a family of boundary conditions imposed on the nodal set, or, equivalently, a family of operators with delta function potentials supported on the nodal set. In this paper we explicitly describe this flow for a Schrödinger operator with separable potential on a rectangular domain, and determine a mechanism by which lower energy eigenfunctions do or do not contribute to the nodal deficiency.

Abstract:We compute asymptotics of eigenvalues approaching the bottom of the continuous spectrum, and associated resonances, for Schrödinger operators in dimension two. We distinguish persistent eigenvalues, which have associated resonances, from disappearing ones, which do not. We illustrate the significance of this distinction by computing corresponding scattering phase asymptotics and numerical Breit--Wigner peaks. We prove all of our results for circular wells, and extend some of them to more general problems using recent resolvent techniques.

Abstract:We study the effects of a domain deformation to the nodal set of Laplacian eigenfunctions when the eigenvalue is degenerate. In particular, we study deformations of a rectangle that perturb one side and how they change the nodal sets corresponding to an eigenvalue of multiplicity 2. We establish geometric properties, such as number of nodal domains, presence of crossings, and boundary intersections, of nodal sets for a large class of boundary deformations and study how these properties change along each eigenvalue branch for small perturbations. We show that internal crossings of the nodal set break under generic deformations and obtain estimates on the location and regularity of the nodal sets on the perturbed rectangle.

Abstract:In this paper by making use of a method to study avoided level crossings with very small splitting magnitudes, a relation is found between the nearest-level-spacing distribution P(s) near s=0 of a Hamiltonian H and the distribution of \[psi(i)(lambda(1))\V\psi(i+1)(lambda(1))]\ (where V is a perturbation term and \psi(i)(lambda(1))] are eigen-functions of H(lambda(1))=H + lambda(1)V with small lambda(1). Then some of the features of P(0) can be qualitatively explained.

Abstract:We study the eigenvalue problem for a one-dimensional Dirac operator with a spatially varying "mass" term. It is well-known that when the mass function has the form of a kink, or domain wall , transitioning between strictly positive and strictly negative asymptotic mass, , at , the Dirac operator has a simple eigenvalue of zero energy (geometric multiplicity equal to one) within a gap in the continuous spectrum, with corresponding exponentially localized zero mode . We consider the eigenvalue problem for the one-dimensional Dirac operator with mass function defined by "gluing" together domain wall--type transitions, assuming that the distance between transitions, , is sufficiently large, focusing on the illustrative cases and . When we prove that the Dirac operator has two real simple eigenvalues of opposite sign and of order . The associated eigenfunctions are, up to error of order , linear combinations of shifted copies of the single domain wall zero mode. For the case , we prove the Dirac operator has two nonzero simple eigenvalues as in the two domain wall case and a simple eigenvalue at energy zero. The associated eigenfunctions of these eigenvalues can again, up to small error, be expressed as linear combinations of shifted copies of the single domain wall zero mode. When no new technical difficulty arises and the result is similar. Our methods are based on a Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction/Schur complement strategy, which maps the Dirac operator eigenvalue problem for eigenstates with near-zero energies to the problem of determining the kernel of an matrix reduction, which depends nonlinearly on the eigenvalue parameter. The class of Dirac operators we consider controls the bifurcation of topologically protected "edge states" from Dirac points (linear band crossings) for classes of Schrödinger operators with domain wall modulated periodic potentials in one and two space dimensions. The present results may be used to construct a rich class of defect modes in periodic structures modulated by multiple domain walls.

Quantum trails and memory effects in the phase space of chaotic quantum systems

Abstract:The eigenstates of a chaotic system can be enhanced along underlying unstable periodic orbits in so-called quantum scars, making it more likely for a particle launched along one such orbits to be found still there at long times. Unstable periodic orbits are however a negligible part of the phase space, and a question arises regarding the structure of the wavefunction elsewhere. Here, we address this question and show that a weakly-dispersing dynamics of a localized wavepacket in phase space leaves a "quantum trail" on the eigenstates, that is, makes them vary slowly when moving along a trajectories in phase space, even if not periodic. The quantum trails underpin a remarkable dynamical effect: for a system initialized in a localized wavepacket, the long-time phase-space distribution is enhanced along the short-time trajectory, which can result in ergodicity breaking. We provide the general intuition for these effects and prove them in the stadium billiard, for which an unwarping procedure allows to visualize the phase space on the two-dimensional space of the page.

Abstract:In this paper we consider one-dimensional diffusions with constant coefficients in a finite interval with jump boundary and a certain deterministic jump distribution. We use coupling methods in order to identify the spectral gap in the case of a large drift and prove that that there is a threshold drift above which the bottom of the spectrum no longer depends on the drift. As a Corollary to our result we are able to answer two questions concerning elliptic eigenvalue problems with non-local boundary conditions formulated previously by Iddo Ben-Ari and Ross Pinsky.

Abstract:We consider operators with random potentials on graphs, such as the lattice version of the random Schroedinger operator. The main result is a general bound on the probabilities of simultaneous occurrence of eigenvalues in specified distinct intervals, with the corresponding eigenfunctions being separately localized within prescribed regions. The bound generalizes the Wegner estimate on the density of states. The analysis proceeds through a new multiparameter spectral averaging principle.
