Abstract:In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of two hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over a finite dimensional subalgebra. In general the free product is a finite direct sum of interpolated free group factors and a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra. We then show that the class of von Neumann algebras of this form is closed under taking amalgamated free products over finite dimensional subalgebras.

Abstract:We investigate a construction which associates a finite von Neumann algebra $M(\Gamma,\mu)$ to a finite weighted graph $(\Gamma,\mu)$. Pleasantly, but not surprisingly, the von Neumann algebra associated to to a `flower with $n$ petals' is the group von Neumann algebra of the free group on $n$ generators. In general, the algebra $M(\Gamma,\mu)$ is a free product, with amalgamation over a finite-dimensional abelian subalgebra corresponding to the vertex set, of algebras associated to subgraphs `with one edge' (or actually a pair of dual edges). This also yields `natural' examples of (i) a Fock-type model of an operator with a free Poisson distribution; and (ii) $\C \oplus \C$-valued circular and semi-circular operators.

Rigid Graph Products

Abstract:We prove rigidity properties for von Neumann algebraic graph products. We introduce the notion of rigid graphs and define a class of II$_1$-factors named $\mathcal{C}_{\rm Rigid}$. For von Neumann algebras in this class we show a unique rigid graph product decomposition. In particular, we obtain unique prime factorization results and unique free product decomposition results for new classes of von Neumann algebras. Furthermore, we show that for many graph products of II$_1$-factors, including the hyperfinite II$_1$-factor, we can, up to a constant 2, retrieve the radius of the graph from the graph product. We also prove several technical results concerning relative amenability and embeddings of (quasi)-normalizers in graph products. Furthermore, we give sufficient conditions for a graph product to be nuclear and characterize strong solidity, primeness and free-indecomposability for graph products.

On the structure of graph product von Neumann algebras

Abstract:We undertake a comprehensive study of structural properties of graph products of von Neumann algebras equipped with faithful, normal states, as well as properties of the graph products relative to subalgebras coming from induced subgraphs. Among the technical contributions in this paper include a complete bimodule calculation for subalgebras arising from subgraphs. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of when two subalgebras coming from induced subgraphs can be amenable relative to each other. We also give complete characterizations of when the graph product can be full, diffuse, or a factor. Our results are obtained in a broad generality, and we emphasize that they are new even in the tracial setting. They also allow us to deduce new results about when graph products of groups can be amenable relative to each other.

Abstract:Building on results of Haagerup and Schultz, we decompose an arbitrary operator in a diffuse, finite von Neumann algebra into the sum of a normal operator and an s.o.t.-quasinilpotent operator. We also prove an analogue of Weyl's inequality relating eigenvalues and singular values for operators in a diffuse, finite von Neumann algebra.

And then, we construct the free-product Banach algebra for arbitrarily fixed multi scales , for any , and study the free probability on . Our free-distributional data preserves certain analytic data on the scaled hypercomplex numbers .

Abstract:We study conditions under which subdirect products of various types of algebraic structures are finitely generated or finitely presented. In the case of two factors, we prove general results for arbitrary congruence permutable varieties, which generalise previously known results for groups, and which apply to modules, rings, $K$-algebras and loops. For instance, if $C$ is a fiber product of $A$ and $B$ over a common quotient $D$, and if $A$, $B$ and $D$ are finitely presented, then $C$ is finitely generated. For subdirect products of more than two factors we establish a general connection with projections on pairs of factors and higher commutators. More detailed results are provided for groups, loops, rings and $K$-algebras. In particular, let $C$ be a subdirect product of $K$-algebras $A_1,\dots,A_n$ for a Noetherian ring $K$ such that the projection of $C$ onto any $A_i\times A_j$ has finite co-rank in $A_i\times A_j$. Then $C$ is finitely generated (resp. finitely presented) if and only if all $A_i$ are finitely generated (resp. finitely presented). Finally, examples of semigroups and lattices are provided which indicate further complications as one ventures beyond congruence permutable varieties.

Abstract:<p>We define a notion of free product for coarse spaces that generalizes the corresponding notion of a free product for groups. We show that free products preserve coarse properties such as coarse property C, finite coarse decomposition complexity, and coarse property A. We also give an upper bound estimate on the dimension of a coarse free product in terms of the dimension of its factors.</p>

Abstract:We prove the Schur product theorem for subfactor planar algebras. Based on it, several results about biprojections are obtained. We discuss a new approach to the complexity of subfactors. Then we classify three families of subfactor planar algebras, subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxes with 4 dimensional 2-boxes and at most 23 dimensional 3-boxes; exchange relation planar algebras with 4 dimensional 2-boxes; subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxes, such that the quotient of 3-boxes by the basic construction ideal is abelian. It extends the classification of singly generated planar algebras obtained by Bisch and Jones.

Abstract:Let A and B be C*-algebras whose quotients are all RFD, and let C be a central C*-subalgebra in both A and B. We prove that the full amalgamated free product of A and B over C is then RFD. This generalizes Korchagin's result that amalgamated free products of commutative C*-algebras are RFD. When applied to the case of a trivial amalgam, our methods recover the result of Exel-Loring for separable C*-algebras. As corollaries to our theorem, we give sufficient conditions for amalgamated free products of maximally almost periodic (MAP) groups to have RFD C*-algebras and hence to be MAP.

Abstract:Let (M,φ)=(M1,φ1)∗(M2,φ2)$${(M, \varphi) = (M_1, \varphi_1) * (M_2, \varphi_2)}$$ be a free product of arbitrary von Neumann algebras endowed with faithful normal states. Assume that the centralizer M1φ1$${M_1^{\varphi_1}}$$ is diffuse. We first show that any intermediate subalgebra M1⊂Q⊂M$${M_1 \subset Q \subset M}$$ which has nontrivial central sequences in M is necessarily equal to M1. Then we obtain a general structural result for all the intermediate subalgebras M1⊂Q⊂M$${M_1 \subset Q \subset M}$$ with expectation. We deduce that any diffuse amenable von Neumann algebra can be concretely realized as a maximal amenable subalgebra with expectation inside a full nonamenable type III1 factor. This provides the first class of concrete maximal amenable subalgebras in the framework of type III factors. We finally strengthen all these results in the case of tracial free product von Neumann algebras.

Assembly of Constructible Factorization Algebras

Abstract:We provide a toolbox of extension, gluing, and assembly techniques for factorization algebras. Using these tools, we fill various gaps in the literature on factorization algebras on stratified manifolds, the main one being that constructible factorization algebras form a sheaf of symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories. Additionally, we explain how to assemble constructible factorization algebras from the data on the individual strata together with module structures associated to the relative links; thus answering a question by Ayala. Along the way, we give detailed proofs of the following facts which are also of independent interest: constructibility is a local condition; the $\infty$-category of disks is a localization of any sufficiently fine poset of disks; constructibility implies the Weiss condition on disks; constructible factorization algebras are algebras for the $\infty$-operad of embedded disks. For each of these, variants or special cases already existed, but they were either incomplete or not general enough.

Some prime factorization results for free quantum group factors

Abstract:We prove some unique factorization results for tensor products of free quantum group factors. They are type III analogues of factorization results for direct products of bi-exact groups established by Ozawa and Popa. In the proof, we first take continuous cores of the tensor products, which satisfy a condition similar to condition (AO), and discuss some factorization properties for the continuous cores. We then deduce factorization properties for the original type III factors. We also prove some unique factorization results for crossed product von Neumann algebras by direct products of bi-exact groups.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a Dedekind domain whose field of fractions $K$ is a global field. Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional separable $K$-algebra and let $\Lambda$ be an $\mathcal{O}$-order in $A$. Let $n$ be a positive integer and suppose that $X$ is a $\Lambda$-lattice such that $K \otimes_{\mathcal{O}} X$ is free of rank $n$ over $A$. Then $X$ contains a (non-unique) free $\Lambda$-sublattice of rank $n$. The main result of the present article is to show there exists such a sublattice $Y$ such that the generalised module index $[X : Y]_{\mathcal{O}}$ has explicit upper bounds with respect to division that are independent of $X$ and can be chosen to satisfy certain conditions. We give examples of applications to the approximation of normal integral bases and strong Minkowski units, and to the Galois module structure of rational points over abelian varieties.

Abstract:This paper introduces Linguistic Style Improvisation, a theory and set of algorithms for improvisation of spoken utterances by artificial agents, with applications to interactive story and dialogue systems. We argue that linguistic style is a key aspect of character, and show how speech act representations common in AI can provide abstract representations from which computer characters can improvise. We show that the mechanisms proposed introduce the possibility of socially oriented agents, meet the requirements that lifelike characters be believable, and satisfy particular criteria for improvisation proposed by Hayes-Roth.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a discrete group. Given unital $G$-$C^*$-algebras $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, we give an abstract condition under which every $G$-subalgebra $\mathcal{C}$ of the form $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{C}\subset \mathcal{A}\otimes_{\text{min}}\mathcal{B}$ is a tensor product. This generalizes the well-known splitting results in the context of $C^*$-algebras by Zacharias and Zsido. As an application, we prove a topological version of the Intermediate Factor theorem. When a product group $G=\Gamma_1\times\Gamma_2$ acts (by a product action) on the product of corresponding $\Gamma_i$-boundaries $\partial\Gamma_i$, using the abstract condition, we show that every intermediate subalgebra $C(X)\subset\mathcal{C}\subset C(X)\otimes_{\text{min}}C(\partial\Gamma_1\times \partial\Gamma_2)$ is a tensor product (under some additional assumptions on $X$). This can be considered as a topological version of the Intermediate Factor theorem. We prove that our assumptions are necessary and cannot generally be relaxed. We also introduce the notion of a uniformly rigid action for $C^*$-algebras and use it to give various classes of inclusions $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{A}\otimes_{\text{min}}\mathcal{B}$ for which every invariant intermediate algebra is a tensor product.

Abstract:If $k$ is an infinite cardinal, we say a C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is residually less than $k$ dimensional, $R_{<k}D,$ if the family of representations of $\mathcal{A}$ on Hilbert spaces of dimension less than $k$ separates the points of $\mathcal{A}.$ We give characterizations of this property, and we show that if $\{\mathcal{A}_{i}:i\in I\} $ is a family of $R_{<k}D$ algebras, then the free product $\underset{i\in I}{\ast}\mathcal{A}_{i}$ is $R_{<k}D$. If each $\mathcal{A}_{i}$ is unital, we give sufficient conditions, depending on the cardinal $k$, for the free product $\underset{i\in I}{\ast_{\mathbb{C}}}\mathcal{A}_{i}$ in the category of unital C*-algebras to be $R_{<k}D$. We also give a new characterization of RFD, in terms of a lifting property, for separable C*-algebras.

Abstract:We show that graph products of non trivial finite dimensional von Neumann algebras are strongly 1-bounded when the underlying *-algebra has vanishing first L2-Betti number. The proof uses a combination of the following two key ideas to obtain lower bounds on the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of matrix polynomials in a generating set: a notion called ''algebraic soficity'' for *-algebras allowing for the existence of Galois bounded microstates with asymptotically constant diagonals; a probabilistic construction of the authors of permutation models for graph independence over the diagonal.

Abstract:A very first step to develop non-commutative algebraic geometry is the arithmetic of polynomials in non-commuting variables over a commutative field, that is, the study of elements in free associative algebras. This investigation is presented as a natural extension of the classical theory in one variable by using Leavitt algebras, which are localizations of free algebras with respect to the Gabriel topology defined by an ideal of codimension 1. In particular to any polynomial in n non-commuting variables with non-zero constant term we associate a finite-dimensional module over the free algebra of rank n, which turns out to be simple if and only if the polynomial is irreducible. This approach leads to new insights in the study of the factorization of polynomials into irreducible ones and other related topics, such as an algorithm to divide polynomials or to compute the greatest common divisor between them, or a description of similar polynomials. The case of polynomials with zero constant term reduces to an open question whether the intersection of nonunital subalgebras of codimension 1 in a free associative algebra is trivial, that is, 0.

Abstract:We present a product of pairs of pointed Hilbert spaces that, in the context of Bozėjko, Leinert and Speicher's theory of conditionally free probability, plays the role of the reduced free product of pointed Hilbert spaces, and thus gives a unified construction for the natural notions of independence defined by Muraki. We additionally provide important applications of this construction. We prove that, assuming minor restrictions, for any pair of conditionally free algebras there are copies of them that are conditionally free and also free, a property that is frequently assumed (as hypothesis) to prove several results in the literature. Finally, we give a short proof of the linearization property of the $^cR$-transform (the analog of Voiculescu's $R$-transform in the context of conditionally free probability).
