Abstract:Gravity is, by far, one of the scientific themes that have most piqued the curiosity of scientists and philosophers over the centuries. The history of science tells us that when the creative effort of physicists and philosophers to solve the main puzzles of the understanding of our universe met, a new conceptual revolution has started. However, since Einstein's relativistic theories and the subsequent advent of quantum mechanics, physicists and philosophers have taken different paths, both kidnapped by the intrinsic conceptual and mathematical difficulties inherited by their studies. Is it possible to restore a unitary vision of knowledge, overcoming the scientific-humanistic dichotomy that has established itself over time? The answer is certainly not trivial, but we can start from school to experience a new vision of a unified knowledge. From this need, the Gravitas project has born. Gravitas is a multidisciplinary outreach and educational program devoted to high school students (17-19 years old) that mixes contemporary physics and the philosophy of science. Coordinated by the Cagliari Section of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, in Italy, Gravitas has started on December 2021 with an unconventional online format: two researchers coming from different fields of research meet a moderator and informally discuss about gravity and related phenomena. The public can chat and indirectly interact with them during the YouTube live. The project involved about 250 students from 16 high schools in Sardinia, Italy. Students should also create posts thought for social media whose content is based on the seminars they attended during the project. We present the project and discuss its possible outcomings concerning the introduction of a multidisciplinary approach in teaching physics, philosophy, and the history of contemporary physics in high schools.

Abstract:We have used maximum-likelihood estimation to determine the quadrupole amplitude $Q_{\rm rms-PS}$ and the spectral index $n$ of the density fluctuation power spectrum at recombination from the \cobe\ DMR data. We find a strong correlation between the two parameters of the form $Q_{\rm rms-PS}=(15.7\pm 2.6)\exp[0.46(1-n)]\mk$ for fixed $n$. Our result is slightly smaller than and has a smaller statistical uncertainty than the 1992 estimate of Smoot et al.

Abstract:GRAVITY is a new instrument to coherently combine the light of the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope Interferometer to form a telescope with an equivalent 130 m diameter angular resolution and a collecting area of 200 m 2 . The instrument comprises fiber fed integrated optics beam combination, high resolution spectroscopy, built-in beam analysis and control, near-infrared wavefront sensing, phase-tracking, dual-beam operation, and laser metrology. GRAVITY opens up to optical/infrared interferometry the techniques of phase referenced imaging and narrow angle astrometry, in many aspects following the concepts of radio interferometry. This article gives an overview of GRAVITY and reports on the performance and the first astronomical observations during commissioning in 2015/16. We demonstrate phase-tracking on stars as faint as m K ≈ 10 mag, phase-referenced interferometry of objects fainter than m K ≈ 15 mag with a limiting magnitude of m K ≈ 17 mag, minute long coherent integrations, a visibility accuracy of better than 0.25%, and spectro-differential phase and closure phase accuracy better than 0.5°, corresponding to a differential astrometric precision of better than ten microarcseconds ( μ as). The dual-beam astrometry, measuring the phase difference of two objects with laser metrology, is still under commissioning. First observations show residuals as low as 50 μ as when following objects over several months. We illustrate the instrument performance with the observations of archetypical objects for the different instrument modes. Examples include the Galactic center supermassive black hole and its fast orbiting star S2 for phase referenced dual-beam observations and infrared wavefront sensing, the high mass X-ray binary BP Cru and the active galactic nucleus of PDS 456 for a few μ as spectro-differential astrometry, the T Tauri star S CrA for a spectro-differential visibility analysis, ξ Tel and 24 Cap for high accuracy visibility observations, and η Car for interferometric imaging with GRAVITY.

Abstract:While Newtonian gravity is an adequate model for current geophysical exploration, Einsteinian gravity, based on the connection between free fall and warped time, has superseded Newtonian gravity as our best understanding of the universe. Einsteinian gravity is fundamental to GPS navigation and is a useful tool for geodesy. The Einstein-First Project is pioneering new curriculum material that seeks to teach students, from ages 11 upwards, the Einsteinian paradigm for gravity. By developing models, analogies and classroom activity based learning, we have found that students are fascinated and easily cope with concepts that adults, indoctrinated with Euclidean-Newtonian concepts, find difficult and confusing. This paper reviews the Einstein-First program, its methods and results of studies with students. We show that the majority of students demonstrate improved conceptual understanding and improved attitude to physics and that female students who enter the program with lower scores than male students, increase their performance to be level with the male students.
Computational General Relativity in the Wolfram Language using Gravitas II: ADM Formalism and Numerical Relativity

Abstract:This is the second in a series of two articles introducing the Gravitas computational general relativity framework, in which we now focus upon the design and capabilities of Gravitas's numerical subsystem, including its ability to perform general 3+1 decompositions of spacetime via the ADM formalism, its support for the definition and construction of arbitrary Cauchy surfaces as initial data, its support for the definition and enforcement of arbitrary gauge and coordinate conditions, its various algorithms for ensuring the satisfaction of the ADM Hamiltonian and momentum constraints, and its unique adaptive refinement algorithms based on hypergraph rewriting via Wolfram model evolution. Particular attention is paid to the seamless integration between Gravitas's symbolic and numerical subsystems, its ability to configure, run, analyze and visualize complex numerical relativity simulations and their outputs within a single notebook environment, and its capabilities for handling generic curvilinear coordinate systems and spacetimes with general (and often highly non-trivial) topologies using its specialized and highly efficient hypergraph-based numerical algorithms. We also provide illustrations of Gravitas's functionality for the visualization of hypergraph geometries and spacetime embedding diagrams, the ability for Gravitas's symbolic and numerical subsystems to be used in concert for the extraction of gravitational wave signals and other crucial simulation data, and Gravitas's in-built library of standard initial data, matter distributions and gauge conditions. We conclude by demonstrating how the numerical subsystem can be used to set up, run, visualize and analyze a standard yet nevertheless reasonably challenging numerical relativity test case: a binary black hole collision and merger within a vacuum spacetime (including the extraction of its outgoing gravitational wave profile).

Abstract:It is more important than ever to push experimental tests of gravitational theory to the limits of existing technology in both range and sensitivity. This brief review focuses on spin-based tests of General Relativity and their implications for alternative, mostly non-metric theories of gravity motivated by the challenge of unification with the Standard Model of particle physics. The successful detection of geodetic precession and frame-dragging by Gravity Probe B places new constraints on a number of these theories, and increases our confidence in the theoretical mechanisms underpinning current ideas in astrophysics and cosmology.

Abstract:Microgravity measurements have enabled a variety of geophysical surveying and monitoring applications including advance warning of natural hazards, slope stability monitoring, discovery of buried tunnels, pipework, and other utilities, identification of sinkholes and other natural voids, buried aquifers and in monitoring groundwater hydrology. In the civil engineering context, microgravity measurements can provide valuable information for construction projects or intervention activities by locating buried utilities, hazards or other features of relevance.Disruptive MEMS gravity sensor technologies are poised to provide entirely new approaches for microgravity measurements in the form of portable sensors that could ultimately be mounted on remotely operated vehicles or drones, integrated into land-based distributed sensor networks, or deployed in shallow borehole configurations. Instruments based on these sensors could enable vector gravity measurements as well as full tensor gravity gradiometry.Trials are ongoing of a single-axis MEMS surface module with a noise floor of 50 &#181;Gal/rt-Hz and a resolution of < 10 &#181;Gal while allowing for measurement over the entire +/- 1g dynamic range. This paper discusses the background and context for gravity imaging in geotechnical applications, forward modelling of case studies of relevance, and ongoing developments in the construction of a unique portable surface gravimeter.

Abstract:This document gathers the notes of a 30-hour review course on gravitation, which I delivered in January 2018 and January 2019 at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences of Cameroon (AIMS-Cameroon). Its main goal is to propose a big picture of gravitation, where Einstein's relativity arises as a natural increment to Newton's theory. It is designed for bachelor/master students who do not necessarily have prior knowledge about relativity. The students are nevertheless expected to be familiar with the fundamentals of Newton's mechanics and gravitation, for the first chapter to be a mere reformulation of known concepts. The second chapter then introduces special and general relativity at the same time, while the third chapter explores concrete manifestations of relativistic gravitation, notably gravitational waves and black holes. Each section corresponds, on average, to slightly more than a 2-hour black-board lecture. The numerous exercises must be considered part of the course itself; they are intended to stimulate active reading.
