Abstract:In electromagnetism, as in Newton's mechanics, action is always equal to reaction. The force from the electromagnetic field on matter is balanced by an equal and opposite force from matter on the field. We generally speak only of forces exerted by the field, not forces exerted upon the field. But, we should not be hesitant to speak of forces acting on the field. The electromagnetic field closely resembles a relativistic fluid and responds to forces in the same way. Analyzing this analogy sheds light on the inertial role played by the field's mass, the status of Maxwell's stress tensor, and the nature of the electromagnetic field.

Abstract:There has been much progress in recent years in the simulation of Casimir forces between various objects. Current methods have allowed traditional computational electromagnetic solvers to be used to find the Casimir forces in arbitrary three-dimensional objects. The underlying theory to these approaches requires knowledge and manipulation of advanced quantum field theory or quantum statistical physics. We present a means of deriving the Casimir force using the method of moments via the argument principle that presents a simplified derivation and greater freedom in the representation of the moment matrix.

Abstract:Using the Finite-Difference-Time-Domain (FDTD) method, we compute the electromagnetic field distribution in and around dielectric media of various shapes and optical properties. With the aid of the constitutive relations, we proceed to compute the bound charge and bound current densities, then employ the Lorentz law of force to determine the distribution of force-density within the regions of interest. For a few simple cases where analytical solutions exist, these solutions are found to be in complete agreement with our numerical results. We also analyze the distribution of fields and forces in more complex systems, and discuss the relevance of our findings to experimental observations. In particular, we demonstrate the single-beam trapping of a dielectric micro-sphere immersed in a liquid under conditions that are typical of optical tweezers.

Abstract:It is shown, that the radiation of the charge, moving with uniform acceleration or uniformly moving round a circle and also freely moving in a gravitational field, contradicts the principle of equivalence. It is also shown, that the interaction of the charges, moving with uniform acceleration or uniformly circling, which has been calculated within the framework of classical electrodynamics, leads to the violation of laws of conservation of energy, impulse and angular momentum. We have offered a method in which way to conform electrodynamics to the principle of equivalence. So in the electrodynamics, which has been conformed in such a way, all the mentioned violations of the laws of conservation are automatically removed and the stability of Rutherford's atom is explained. It is shown that the changes, which we have brought into the electrodynamics, do not contradict the results of experiments.

Abstract:It is pointed out that the coupling of macroscopic test masses to the gravi-dilaton background of string theory is non geodesic, in general, and cannot be parametrized by a Brans-Dicke model of scalar-tensor gravity. The response of gravitational antennas to dilatonic waves should be analyzed through a generalized equation of geodesic deviation, taking into account the possible direct coupling of the background to the (composition-dependent) dilatonic charge of the antenna.

Abstract:Using the Finite Difference Time Domain method, we solve Maxwell's equations numerically and compute the distribution of electromagnetic fields and forces inside material media. The media are generally specified by their dielectric permittivity epsilon(w) and magnetic permeability mu(w), representing small, transparent dielectric and magnetic objects such as platelets and micro-beads. Using two formulations of the electromagnetic force-density, one due to H. A. Lorentz [Collected Papers 2, 164 (1892)], the other due to A. Einstein and J. Laub [Ann, Phys. 331, 541 (1908)], we show that the force-density distribution inside a given object can differ substantially between the two formulations. This is remarkable, considering that the total force experienced by the object is always the same, irrespective of whether the Lorentz or the Einstein-Laub formula is employed. The differences between the two formulations should be accessible to measurement in deformable objects.

Abstract:The force can be defined from the linear momentum in the gravitational field and electromagnetic field. But this definition can not cover the gradient of energy. In the paper, the force will be defined from the energy and torque in a new way, which involves the gravitational force, electromagnetic force, inertial force, gradient of energy, and some other new force terms etc. One of these new force terms can be used to explain why the solar wind varies velocity along the magnetic force line in the interplanetary space between the sun and the earth.

On Radiation Reaction in Classical Electrodynamics

Abstract:The Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equations (LAD) may be the most commonly accepted equation describing the motion of a classical charged particle in its electromagnetic field. However, it is well known that they bare several problems. In particular, almost all solutions are dynamically unstable, and therefore, highly questionable. The question remains whether better equations of motion than LAD can be found to describe the dynamics of charges in the electromagnetic fields. In this paper we present an approach to derive such equations of motions, taking as input the Maxwell equations and a particular charge model only, similar to the model suggested by Dirac in his original derivation of LAD in 1938. We present a candidate for new equations of motion for the case of a single charge. Our approach is motivated by the observation that Dirac's derivation relies on an unjustified application of Stokes' theorem and an equally unjustified Taylor expansion of terms in his evolution equations. For this purpose, Dirac's calculation is repeated using an extended charge model that does allow for the application of Stokes' theorem and enables us to find an explicit equation of motion by adapting Parrott's derivation, thus avoiding a Taylor expansion. The result are second order differential delay equations, which describe the radiation reaction force for the charge model at hand. Their informal Taylor expansion in the radius of the charge model used in the paper reveals again the famous triple dot term of LAD but provokes the mentioned dynamical instability by a mechanism we discuss and, as the derived equations of motion are explicit, is unnecessary.

Abstract:We derive the force of the electromagnetic radiation on material objects by a direct application of the Lorentz law of classical electro-dynamics. The derivation is straightforward in the case of solid metals and solid dielectrics, where the mass density and the optical constants of the media are assumed to remain unchanged under internal and external pressures, and where material flow and deformation can be ignored. For metallic mirrors, we separate the contribution to the radiation pressure of the electrical charge density from that of the current density of the conduction electrons. In the case of dielectric media, we examine the forces experienced by bound charges and currents, and determine the contribution of each to the radiation pressure. These analyses reveal the existence of a lateral radiation pressure inside the dielectric media, one that is exerted at and around the edges of a finite-diameter light beam. The lateral pressure turns out to be compressive for s-polarized light and expansive for p-polarized light. Along the way, we derive an expression for the momentum density of the light field inside dielectric media, one that has equal contributions from the traditional Minkowski and Abraham forms. This new expression for the momentum density, which contains both electromagnetic and mechanical terms, is used to explain the behavior of light pulses and individual photons upon entering and exiting a dielectric slab. In all the cases considered, the net forces and torques experienced by material bodies are consistent with the relevant conservation laws. Our method of calculating the radiation pressure can be used in conjunction with numerical simulations to yield the distribution of fields and forces in diverse systems of practical interest.

Abstract:Within the framework of unified approach we study the Casimir-Lifshitz interaction, the van der Waals friction force and the radiative heat transfer at nonequilibrium conditions, when the interacting bodies are at different temperatures, and they move relative to each other with the arbitrary velocity $V$. The analysis is focused on the surface-surface and surface-particle configuration. Our approach is based on the exact solution of electromagnetic problem about the determination of the fluctuating electromagnetic field in the vacuum gap between two flat parallel surfaces moving relative to each other with the arbitrary velocity $V$. The velocity dependence of the considered phenomena is determined by Doppler shift and can be strong for resonant photon tunneling between surface modes. We show that relativistic effects give rise to a mixing of the contributions from the electromagnetic waves with different polarization to the heat transfer and the interaction forces. We find that these effects are of the order $(V/c)^2$. The limiting case when one of the bodies is sufficiently rarefied gives the heat transfer and the interaction forces between a moving small particle and a surface. We also calculate the friction force acting on a particle moving with an arbitrary velocity relative to the black body radiation.

Abstract:Using the mathematical theory of shape calculus as tool, we perform a rigorous investigation of the virtual work principle for the computation of electromagnetic forces in static settings. The main goal is to shed light on the widely held belief that the virtual work principle entails passively advecting the fields with the virtual displacement when computing deformation-dependent field energies gradients. The adjoint approach to differentiation of functionals under variational constraints provides a mathematical justification for this belief. However, it also shows that passively advecting the actual electromagnetic fields is sufficient only in the case of linear materials. In the general case, also fields arising as solutions of adjoint variational problems have to be taken into account.

Contribution of electric self-forces to electromagnetic momentum in a moving system

Abstract:In moving electromagnetic systems, electromagnetic momentum calculated from the vector potential is shown to be proportional to the field energy of the system. The momentum thus obtained is shown actually to be the same as derived from a Lorentz transformation of the rest-frame electromagnetic energy of the system, assuming electromagnetic energy-momentum to be a 4-vector. The energy-momentum densities of electromagnetic fields form, however, components of the electromagnetic stress-energy tensor, and their transformations from rest frame to another frame involve additional contributions from stress terms in the Maxwell stress tensor which do not get represented in the momentum calculated from the vector potential. The genesis of these additional contributions, arising from stress in the electromagnetic fields, can be traced, from a physical perspective, to electric self-forces contributing to the electromagnetic momentum of moving systems that might not always be very obvious. Such subtle contributions to the electromagnetic momentum from stress in electromagnetic fields that could be significant even for non-relativistic motion of the system, lead in fact, to resolution of some curious riddles in the electromagnetic momentum of such systems, e.g., the apparent paradox of a {\em nil} electromagnetic momentum in a charged parallel-plate capacitor, moving perpendicular to the plate orientations, in spite of the moving system carrying finite electromagnetic energy within it. Such contributions from stress in electromagnetic fields also provide a natural solution to the famous, century-old, enigmatic factor of 4/3, encountered in the electromagnetic momentum of a moving charged sphere.

Abstract:Based on classical electromagnetic theory, the conservation law for linear momentum in an optical field is derived. The expressions of gradient and scattering forces exerted on an arbitrary object are obtained. It validates that electromagnetic model can be used to explain fundamental of laser trapping and manipulation of living biological cells and organelles with cells. Theoretical analysis indicates that the forces acting on Rayleigh particles can be divided into two types: the scattering force which comes from electromagnetic wave momentum changes due to the scattering by a dipole and the gradient force which is equal to the Lorenz force acting on the induced dipole. And the optical forces are relative to systemic parameters including the radius of the beam waist, the relative refractive index of particle and surrounding medium, the radius of particle and laser power.

Abstract:The self-force of classical electrodynamics on a charged "rigid" body of radius R is evaluated analytically for the body undergoing a slow (i.e., with a speed v<<c), slight (i.e., small compared to R), and temporary displacement from an initial position of rest. The results are relevant to the Bohr-Rosenfeld analysis of the measurability of the electromagnetic field, which has been the subject of a recent controversy.

Abstract:We formally state the connection between the relativistic part of the radiation reaction and the Poynting Robertson force term, $-Rv/c^2$, where $R$ is power radiated. Then we address the question, does $[x,p]=i \hb$ for an accelerating charge ? The full radiation reaction term is used, which includes the relativistic term (von Laue vector.). We show that the full relativistic radiation reaction term must be taken into account if a commutation relation between $x$ and $p$ is to hold for an electron under uniform acceleration, consistent with the expectation values of $x^2$ and $p^2$.

Abstract:The force of electromagnetic radiation on a dielectric medium may be derived by a direct application of the Lorentz law of classical electrodynamics. While the light's electric field acts upon the (induced) bound charges in the medium, its magnetic field exerts a force on the bound currents. We use the example of a wedge-shaped solid dielectric, immersed in a transparent liquid and illuminated at Brewster's angle, to demonstrate that the linear momentum of the electromagnetic field within dielectrics has neither the Minkowski nor the Abraham form; rather, the correct expression for momentum density has equal contributions from both. The time rate of change of the incident momentum thus expressed is equal to the force exerted on the wedge plus that experienced by the surrounding liquid.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to highlight a recently proposed method for the treatment of classical radiative effects, in particular radiation reaction, via effective field theory methods. We emphasize important features of the method, and in particular the doubling of fields. We apply the method to two simple systems: for the mass-rope system in 1+1 dimensions we derive an effective action for the mass which describes a damped harmonic oscillator, while for the electromagnetic charge-field system, i.e. the system of an accelerating electric charge in 3+1 d, we derive the leading Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac force.

Abstract:Based on analysis of the specific features inherent in the trajectory of a charged particle moving in an inhomogeneous electromagnetic wave, the physical processes determining the nature of ponderomotive forces are specified. In particular, the reason for switching the accelerated motion of a particle passing through an electrical field with zero amplitude in the direction perpendicular to the electrical field to deceleration with an increase in the electrical field amplitude is detailed. The effect of the inertial mass on the trajectory of a charged particle moving in an inhomogeneous electromagnetic wave is determined.

Abstract:The electromagnetic (EM) radiation force-per-length exerted on a pair of electrically-conducting cylindrical particles of circular and non-circular cross-sections is examined using a formal semi-analytical method based on boundary matching in cylindrical coordinates. Initially, the scattering coefficients of the particle pair are determined by imposing suitable boundary conditions leading linear systems of equations computed via matrix inversion and numerical integration procedures. Standard cylindrical (Bessel and Hankel) wave functions are used and closed-form expressions for the dimensionless longitudinal and transverse radiation force functions are evaluated assuming either magnetic (TE) or electric (TM) plane wave incidences. Particle pairs with smooth and corrugated surfaces are considered and numerical computations are performed with emphasis on the distance separating their centers of mass, the angle of incidence of the incident illuminating field and the surface roughness. Adequate convergence plots confirm the validity of the method to evaluate the radiation force functions, and the model is adaptable to any frequency range (i.e. Rayleigh, Mie or geometrical optics regimes). The results can find potential applications in optical tweezers and other related applications in fluid dynamics. In addition, the acoustical analogue is discussed.

Electromagnetic Force and Momentum in Classical Macroscopic Dipolar Media

Abstract:Using realistic classical models of microscopic electric-charge electric dipoles and electric-current (Amperian) magnetic dipoles, it is proven that the Einstein-Laub macroscopic electromagnetic force on a macroscopic-continuum volume of these classical dipoles equals the sum of the microscopic electromagnetic forces on the discrete classical dipoles in that volume. The internal (hidden) momentum of the discrete Amperian magnetic dipoles is rigorously derived and properly included in the determination of the macroscopic force from the spatial averaging of the microscopic forces. Consequently, the Abraham/Einstein-Laub rather than the Minkowski macroscopic electromagnetic-field momentum density gives the total microscopic electromagnetic-field momentum in that volume. The kinetic momentum is found for the volume of the macroscopic continuum from Newton's relativistic equation of motion. It is shown that the difference between the kinetic and canonical momenta in a volume of the macroscopic continuum is equal to the sum of the "hidden electromagnetic momenta" within the electric-current magnetic dipoles and within hypothetical magnetic-current electric dipoles replacing the electric-charge electric dipoles in the classical macroscopic continuum. To obtain the correct unambiguous value of the force on a volume inside the continuum from the force-momentum expression, it is mandatory that the surface of that volume be hypothetically separated from the rest of the continuum by a thin free-space shell. Two definitive experiments performed in the past with time varying fields and forces are shown to conclusively confirm the Einstein-Laub/Abraham formulation over the Minkowski formulation.
