Abstract:A superconducting substrate is not able to shrink drastically domains in a ferromagnetic film, contrary to the prediction of Bulaevskii and Chudnovsky [Phys. Rev. B, 63, issue1 (2001)]. This is shown on the basis of the exact solution for the stripe domain structure.

Abstract:In a superconducting ferromagnet, the superconducting state appears in the ferromagnetic phase where usually a domain structure has already developed. We study the influence of the superconducting screening currents on a stripe structure with out-of-plane magnetization, in a film of arbitrary thickness. We find that superconductivity always induces a shrinkage of the domains, and there is a critical value of penetration depth below which a mono-domain structure is more stable than the periodic one. Furthermore we investigate the possible different effects of singlet and triplet superconductivity on the domain width, as well as the conditions for the existence of vortices in the domains. The obtained results are then discussed in light of the experimental data of superconducting ferromagnets URhGe, UGe2, and UCoGe.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic substrate influences the electromagnetic response of a type-II superconducting film to the applied magnetic field. We present a two-dimensional integrodifferential model for the magnetization of a flat superconductor/ferromagnet bilayer of an arbitrary shape using a thin shell quasistatic model for the ferromagnetic substrate and an infinitely thin approximation for the superconducting layer. An efficient numerical method is developed and used to investigate the effect of a ferromagnetic substrate. In particular, we simulate the thin bilayer magnetization in a parallel field and, for a high field, the critical-state distributions of the superconducting current density. These critical-state distributions are different from those known for a normal external field.

Abstract:Ultrathin freestanding bismuth film is theoretically predicted to be one kind of two-dimensional topological insulators. Experimentally, the topological nature of bismuth strongly depends on the situations of the Bi films. Film thickness and interaction with the substrate often change the topological properties of Bi films. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy or spectroscopy and first-principle calculation, the properties of Bi(111) ultrathin film grown on the NbSe2 superconducting substrate have been studied. We find the band structures of the ultrathin film is quasi-freestanding, and one-dimensional edge state exists on Bi(111) film as thin as three bilayers. Superconductivity is also detected on different layers of the film and the pairing potential exhibits an exponential decay with the layer thicknesses. Thus, the topological edge state can coexist with superconductivity, which makes the system a promising platform for exploring Majorana Fermions.

Abstract:The ferroelectric properties of disorder Pb (Zr 0.5 Ti 0.5) O 3 thin films are investigated with Monte Carlo simulations on the basis of a first-principles-derived Hamiltonian. It is found that there exists a critical thickness of about three unit cells (∼ 12 Å) below which the ferroelectricity disappears under the condition that the in-plane polarizations are suppressed by sufficient clamping effect. Above the critical thickness, periodic 180 stripe domains with out-of-plane polarizations are formed in the systems in order to minimize the energy of the depolarizing field. The stripe period increases with increasing film thickness. The microscopic mechanism responsible for these phenomena is discussed.

Abstract:While the electrodynamic treatment of a superconducting thin film by Yeh et al. [Phys. Rev. B 48, 9861 (1993)] ostensibly has application for the "thin-film limit," their work is shown to employ bulk-like instead of thin-film electrodynamics, and as such obtains an ostensible violation of the first law of thermodynamics and a surface resistance independent of the resistivity. Other theoretical and experimental difficulties are briefly noted.

Abstract:Transport properties have been measured for a superconducting Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+delta (x approximate to 0.4) thin film grown on a vicinal SrTiO3 single crystal substrate in magnetic field up to 23.5 T. The thin film was patterned into crossed bridges for studying the upper critical magnetic field H-c2(T). Numerical analyses of our data and previously published data lead to the conclusion that upward curvature of H-c2(T) does not imply a divergent H-c2(T) value at T= 0 K.

Investigation of Phase Transitions in Ferromagnetic Nanofilms on a Non-Magnetic Substrate by Computer Simulation

Abstract:Magnetic properties of ferromagnetic nanofilms on non-magnetic substrate are examined by computer simulation. The substrate influence is modeled using the two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova potential. The film has a cubic crystal lattice. Cases of different ratio for substrate period and ferromagnetic film period are considered. The difference in film and substrate periods results in film deformations. These deformations result in a change in the magnetic properties of the film. The Ising model and the Metropolis algorithm are used for the study of magnetic properties. The dependence of Curie temperature on film thickness and substrate potential parameters is calculated. Cases of different values for the coverage factor are considered. The deformation of the film layers is reduced away from the substrate when it is compressed or stretched. The Curie temperature increases when the substrate is compressed and decreases when the substrate is stretched. This pattern is performed for films with different thicknesses. If the coating coefficient for the film is different from one, periodic structures with an increased or reduced concentration of atoms are formed in the film first layer. These structures are absent in higher layers.

Abstract:The local flux profile and the critical current are studied using an array of Hall sensors in a ferromagnetic-superconducting bilayer which consists of niobium film covering ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The results indicate about threefold enhancement of the flux pinning in niobium layer caused by the isolated magnetic domains which are created during the magnetization reversal of the Co/Pt multilayer. The geometrical barrier is absent, and the critical current is strongly peaked in close vicinity to the sample center, suggesting that the critical state differs from that predicted by the Bean model.

Abstract:A quantitative theory of the superconductivity of materials confined at the nanoscale in parameter-free agreement with experimental data has been missing so far. We present a generalization, in the Eliashberg framework, of a BCS theory of superconductivity in good metals which are confined along one of the three spatial directions, such as thin films. In this formulation of the Eliashberg equations the approximation of taking the normal density of states (DOS) as its value at the Fermi level has been removed. By numerically solving these new Eliashberg-type equations, we find the dependence of the superconducting critical temperature on the confinement size , in quantitative agreement with experimental data of Pb and Al thin films with no adjustable parameters. This quantitative agreement provides an indirect confirmation that, upon increasing the confinement, a crossover from a spherical-like Fermi surface, which contains two growing hole pockets caused by the confinement, to a strongly deformed Fermi surface, occurs. This topology of the Fermi sea is implemented in the new Eliashberg-type equations to reproduce the experimentally observed maximum in the critical superconducting temperature vs film thickness of ultra-thin Pb films.

Realizing a Superconducting Square-Lattice Bismuth Monolayer

Abstract:Interplay of crystal symmetry, strong spin$-$orbit coupling (SOC), and many-body interactions in low dimensional materials provides a fertile ground for the discovery of unconventional electronic and magnetic properties and versatile functionalities. Two-dimensional (2D) allotropes of group 15 elements are appealing due to their structures and controllability over symmetries and topology under strong SOC. Here, we report the heteroepitaxial growth of a proximity-induced superconducting 2D square-lattice bismuth monolayer on superconducting Pb films. The square lattice of monolayer bismuth films in a $C_4$ symmetry together with a stripey moiré structure is clearly resolved by our scanning tunneling microscopy and its atomic structure is revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A Rashba-type spin-split Dirac band is predicted by DFT calculations to exist at the Fermi level and becomes superconducting through the proximity effect from the Pb substrate. We suggest the possibility of a topological superconducting state in this system with magnetic dopants/field. This work introduces an intriguing material platform with 2D Dirac bands, strong SOC, topological superconductivity, and the moiré superstructure.

Abstract:CrSb films with various thickness were deposited on KCl (100) substrates by magnetron sputtering. Strong ferromagnetism was observed in the CrSb films, which can be attributed to the ferromagnetic zinc blende-CrSb (ZB-CrSb) phase. The ZB-CrSb film with critical thickness about 5 nm is sufficiently thicker to be investigated the half-metallic nature of ZB-CrSb and to be practically applied in spintronics devices.

Abstract:We report a systematic study of ferromagnetic domains in both single-crystal and thin-film specimens of magnetic topological insulators Cr doped (Bi0.1Sb0.9)2Te3 using magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The temperature and field dependences of MFM and in situ resistance data are consistent with previous bulk transport and magnetic characterization. Bubble-like ferromagnetic domains were observed in both single crystals and thin films. Significantly, smaller domain size (∼500 nm) with narrower domain wall (∼150 − 300 nm) was observed in thin films of magnetic topological insulators, likely due to vertical confinement effect. These results suggest that thin films are more promising for visualization of chiral edge states.

Abstract:We studied the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) like state establishing due to the proximity effect in superconducting Nb/Cu41Ni59 bilayers. Using a special wedge-type deposition technique, series of 20-35 samples could be fabricated by magnetron sputtering during one run. The layer thickness of only a few nanometers, the composition of the alloy, and the quality of interfaces were controlled by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Auger spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic alloy layer were characterized with superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. These studies yield precise information about the thickness, and demonstrate the homogeneity of the alloy composition and magnetic properties along the sample series. The dependencies of the critical temperature on the Nb and Cu41Ni59 layer thickness, Tc(dS) and Tc(dF), were investigated for constant thickness dF of the magnetic alloy layer and dS of the superconducting layer, respectively. All types of non-monotonic behaviors of Tc versus dF predicted by the theory could be realized experimentally: from reentrant superconducting behavior with a broad extinction region to a slight suppression of superconductivity with a shallow minimum. Even a double extinction of superconductivity was observed, giving evidence for the multiple reentrant behavior predicted by theory. All critical temperature curves were fitted with suitable sets of parameters. Then, Tc(dF) diagrams of a hypothetical F/S/F spin-switch core structure were calculated using these parameters. Finally, superconducting spin-switch fabrication issues are discussed in detail in view of the achieved results.

Effect of the depolarizing field on the domain structure of an improper ferroelectric

Abstract:We show that, contrary to common belief, the depolarizing electric field generated by bound charges at thin-film surfaces can have a substantial impact on the domain structure of an improper ferroelectric with topological defects. In hexagonal-manganite thin films, we observe in phase-field simulations that through the action of the depolarizing field, (i) the average magnitude of the polarization decreases, (ii) the local magnitude of the polarization decreases with increasing distance from the domain walls, and (iii) there is a significant alteration of the domain-size distribution and average domain size, which is visualized with the pair-correlation function. We conclude that, in general, it is not appropriate to ignore the effects of the depolarizing field for thin film ferroelectrics.

Abstract:The study of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state has been of considerable recent interest. Below the temperature $T^*$ which is believed to be the transition temperature ($T$) to the FFLO phase in CeCoIn$_5$, K. Kakuyanagi et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 047602 (2005)) reported a composite NMR spectrum with a tiny component observed at frequencies corresponding to the normal state signal. The results were interpreted as evidence for the emergence of an FFLO state. This result is inconsistent with two other NMR studies of V. F. Mitrovi{ć} et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 117002 (2006)) and B.-L. Young et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 036402 (2007)). In this comment we show that the findings of K. Kakuyanagi et al. do not reflect the true nature of the FFLO state but result from excess RF excitation power used in that experiment.

Abstract:The symmetry of the superconducting states arising directly from ferromagnetic states in the crystals with cubic and orthorombic symmetries is described. The symmetry nodes in the quasiparticle spectra of such the states are pointed out if they exist. The superconducting phase transition in the ferromagnet is accompanied by the formation of superconducting domain structure consisting of complex conjugate states imposed on the ferromagnet domain structure with the opposite direction of the magnetization in the adjacent domains. The interplay between stimulation of a nonunitary superconducting state by the ferromagnetic moment and supression of the superconductivity by the diamagnetic orbital currents is established.

Abstract:Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements are performed on the ferromagnetic superconductor EuFe2(As0.8P0.2)2 (Tsc = 22.5 K) to probe the delicate interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity. A clear signature of large ferromagnetic domains is found below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature TC = 18.5 K. In a small temperature interval of -1.5 K below TC, additional SANS signal is observed, of which the indirect Fourier transform reveals characteristic length scales in between -80 nm and -160 nm. These nanometer-scaled domain structures are identified to result from an intermediate inhomogeneous Meissner effect denoted the domain Meissner state, which was recently observed on the surface of EuFe2(As0.79P0.21)2 crystals by means of magnetic force microscopy [V. S. Stolyarov et al., Sci. Adv. 4, 1061 (2018)], ascribed to the competition between ferromagnetism and superconductivity. Our measurements clearly render the domain Meissner state as a bulk phenomenon and provide a key solution to the mystery regarding the intriguing coexistence of strong ferromagnetism and bulk superconductivity in these compounds.
