Abstract:The interplay of electron-electron interaction and confining potential can lead to the reconstruction of fractional quantum Hall edges. We have performed exact diagonalization studies on microscopic models of fractional quantum Hall liquids, in finite-size systems with disk geometry, and found numerical evidence of edge reconstruction under rather general conditions. In the present work we have taken into account effects such as layer thickness and Landau-level mixing, which are found to be of quantitative importance in edge physics. Due to edge reconstruction, additional nonchiral edge modes arise for both incompressible and compressible states. These additional modes couple to electromagnetic fields and thus can be detected in microwave conductivity measurements. They are also expected to affect the exponent of electron Green's function, which has been measured in tunneling experiments. We have studied in this work the electric dipole spectral function that is directly related to the microwave conductivity measurement. Our results are consistent with the enhanced microwave conductivity observed in experiments performed on samples with an array of antidots at low temperatures, and its suppression at higher temperatures. We also discuss the effects of the edge reconstruction on the single-electron spectral function at the edge.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive numerical study of a microscopic model of the fractional quantum Hall system at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=5∕2$, based on the disk geometry. Our model includes Coulomb interaction and a semirealistic confining potential. We also mix in a three-body interaction in some cases to help elucidate the physics. We obtain a phase diagram, discuss the conditions under which the ground state can be described by the Moore-Read state, and study its competition with neighboring stripe phases. We also study quasihole excitations and edge excitations in the Moore-Read-like state. From the evolution of the edge spectrum, we obtain the velocities of the charge and neutral edge modes, which turn out to be very different. This separation of velocities is a source of decoherence for a non-Abelian quasihole and/or quasiparticle (with charge $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}e∕4$) when propagating at the edge; using numbers obtained from a specific set of parameters, we estimate the decoherence length to be around $4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. This sets an upper bound for the separation of the two point contacts in a double point-contact interferometer, designed to detect the non-Abelian nature of such quasiparticles. We also find a state that is a potential candidate for the recently proposed anti-Pfaffian state. We find the speculated anti-Pfaffian state is favored in weak confinement (smooth edge), while the Moore-Read Pfaffian state is favored in strong confinement (sharp edge).

Abstract:The branch conductance as well as the conductance sum rule for the hierarchical edge channel currents of a fractional-quantum-Hall-effect state are derived analytically within the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy scheme. The comparison of our result and those of previous works is discussed. We provide also an intuitive interpretation for the heirarchical drift velocities of the edge excitations which are different for different edge channels.

Abstract:We study the anisotropic effect of the Coulomb interaction on a 1/3-filling fractional quantum Hall system by using an exact diagonalization method on small systems in torus geometry. For weak anisotropy the system remains to be an incompressible quantum liquid, although anisotropy manifests itself in density correlation functions and excitation spectra. When the strength of anisotropy increases, we find the system develops a Hall-smectic-like phase with a one-dimensional charge density wave order and is unstable towards the one-dimensional crystal in the strong anisotropy limit. In all three phases of the Laughlin liquid, Hall-smectic-like, and crystal phases the ground state of the anisotropic Coulomb system can be well described by a family of model wave functions generated by an anisotropic projection Hamiltonian. We discuss the relevance of the results to the geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states proposed by Haldane [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 116801 (2011)].
The Universal Edge Physics in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Abstract:The chiral Luttinger liquid theory for fractional quantum Hall edge transport predicts universal power-law behavior in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for electrons tunneling into the edge. However, it has not been unambiguously observed in experiments in two-dimensional electron gases based on GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructures or quantum wells. One plausible cause is the fractional quantum Hall edge reconstruction, which introduces non-chiral edge modes. The coupling between counterpropagating edge modes can modify the exponent of the I-V characteristics. By comparing the v = 1/3 fractional quantum Hall states in modulation-doped semiconductor devices and in graphene devices, we show that the graphene-based systems have an experimental accessible parameter region to avoid the edge reconstruction, which is suitable for the exploration of the universal edge tunneling exponent predicted by the chiral Luttinger liquid theory.

Abstract:We study the scaling behavior in the tunneling amplitude when quasiparticles tunnel along a straight path between the two edges of a fractional quantum Hall annulus. Such scaling behavior originates from the propagation and tunneling of charged quasielectrons and quasiholes in an effective field analysis. In the limit when the annulus deforms continuously into a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ring, we conjecture the exact functional form of the tunneling amplitude for several cases, which reproduces the numerical results in finite systems exactly. The results for Abelian quasiparticle tunneling is consistent with the scaling analysis; this allows for the extraction of the conformal dimensions of the quasiparticles. We analyze the scaling behavior of both Abelian and non-Abelian quasiparticles in the Read-Rezayi Z(k)-parafermion states. Interestingly, the non-Abelian quasiparticle tunneling amplitudes exhibit non-trivial k-dependent corrections to the scaling exponent.

Abstract:Edge reconstruction has been a well-known effect for integer quantum Hall liquids in the presence of both electron interactions and a confining potential generated by charged background. At more generic fractional fillings, we point out that confined two-dimensional interacting electrons can exhibit the similar reconstruction effect. Our exact diagonalization results show that, in a fractional quantum Hall system with a sharp cleaved edge potential, the electron density oscillation near the edge increases with the distance between the electron gas and the background charge layer. As a results, the outermost hump can detach from the bulk beyond certain point. We suggest that the edge reconstruction effect is relevant to the recent edge tunneling experiments,1 as well as the microwave absorption experiment on two-dimensional electrons in an antidot array.2 Calculating the finite-temperature density profiles, we estimate the temperature above which the edge reconstruction disappears to further discuss the relevance to the microwave absorption experiment.

Abstract:According to Wen's theory, a universal behavior of the fractional quantum Hall edge is expected at sufficiently low energies, where the dispersion of the elementary edge excitation is linear. A microscopic calculation shows that the actual dispersion is indeed linear at low energies, but deviates from linearity beyond certain energy, and also exhibits an "edge roton minimum." We determine the edge exponent from a microscopic approach, and find that the nonlinearity of the dispersion makes a surprisingly small correction to the edge exponent even at energies higher than the roton energy. We explain this insensitivity as arising from the fact that the energy at maximum spectral weight continues to show an almost linear behavior up to fairly high energies. We also formulate an effective field theory to describe the behavior of a reconstructed edge, taking into account multiple edge modes. Experimental consequences are discussed.

Abstract:We present a numerical study of fractional quantum Hall liquid at Landau-level filling factor nu=2/3 in a microscopic model including long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential based on the disk geometry. We find that the ground state is accurately described by the particle-hole conjugate of a nu=1/3 Laughlin state. We also find that there are two counterpropagating edge modes, and the velocity of the forward-propagating mode is larger than the backward-propagating mode. The velocities have opposite responses to the change in the background confinement potential. On the other hand changing the two-body Coulomb potential has qualitatively the same effect on the velocities; for example, we find that increasing layer thickness (which softens of the Coulomb interaction) reduces both the forward mode and the backward mode velocities.

Abstract:Based on a newly derived microscopic fractional quantum Hall edge model, we study its thermodynamics at finite temperature. For the dressed energy spectrum a critical energy scale set by the temperature exists, below which the refractive dispersion, which is essential to the model's bosonization to a Luttinger liquid, is smeared. According to this observation, a temperature-dependent crossover picture is proposed. It is applied to the analysis of a recent tunneling experiment compared with the standard Luttinger liquid theory, and a better fit to the features of the measured conductance-temperature curve is achieved. We also discuss the role of Coulomb interaction in the thermodynamics.
Bulk-edge Correspondence in Fractional Chern Insulators

Abstract:It has been recently realized that strong interactions in topological Bloch bands give rise to the appearance of novel states of matter. Here we study connections between these systems—fractional Chern insulators and the fractional quantum Hall states—via generalization of a gauge-fixed Wannier-Qi construction in the cylinder geometry. Our setup offers a number of important advantages compared to the earlier exact diagonalization studies on a torus. Most notably, it gives access to edge states and to a single-cut orbital entanglement spectrum, hence to the physics of bulk-edge correspondence. It is also readily implemented in the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group method that allows for numerical simulations of significantly larger systems. We demonstrate our general approach on examples of flat-band models on ruby and kagome lattices at bosonic filling fractions ν = 1/ 2a ndν = 1, which show the signatures of (non)-Abelian phases, and establish the correspondence between the physics of edge states and the entanglement in the bulk. Notably, we find that the non-Abelian ν = 1 phase can be stabilized by purely on-site interactions in the presence of a confining potential.

Abstract:The possibility of realizing lattice analogs of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, so-called fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), in nearly flat topological (Chern) bands has attracted a lot of recent interest. Here, we make the connection between Abelian as well as non-Abelian FQH states and FCIs more precise. Using a gauge-fixed version of Qi's Wannier basis representation of a Chern band, we demonstrate that the interpolation between several FCI states, obtained by short-range lattice interactions in a spin-orbit-coupled kagome lattice model, and the corresponding continuum FQH states is smooth: the gap remains approximately constant and extrapolates to a finite value in the thermodynamic limit, while the low-lying part of the orbital entanglement spectrum remains qualitatively unaltered. The orbital entanglement spectra also provide a first glimpse of the edge physics of FCIs via the bulk-boundary correspondence. Corroborating these results, we find that the squared overlaps between the FCI and FQH ground states are as large as 98.7% for the 8-electron Laughlin state at v = 1/3 (consistent with an earlier study) and 97.8% for the 10-electron Moore-Read state at v = 1/2. For the bosonic analogs of these states, the adiabatic continuity is also shown to hold, albeit with somewhat smaller associated overlaps, etc. Although going between the Chern bands to the Landau-level problem is often smooth, we show that this is not always the case by considering fermions at filling fraction v = 4/5, where the interpolation between Hamiltonians describing the two systems results in a phase transition. Abstract:For fractional quantum Hall states on a finite disk, we study the thermoelectric transport properties under the influence of the presence of an edge and its reconstruction. In a recent study on a torus [Phys. Rev. B 101, 241101(R) (2020)2469-995010.1103/PhysRevB.101.241101], Sheng and Fu found a universal non-Fermi liquid power-law scaling of the thermoelectric conductivity αxy∝Tη for the gapless composite Fermi liquid state. The exponent η∼0.5 appears an independence of the filling factors and the details of the interactions. In the presence of an edge, we find the properties of the edge spectrum dominants the low-temperature behaviors and a nonuniversal scaling behavior in low temperature is observed. To consider individually the effect of the edge states, the real space entanglement spectrum of the model wave function, which contains only the spectrum of edge excitation is employed. Its spectrum energies could be tuned by varying the radius of the subsystem. In the non-Abelian Moore-Read state, the Majorana neutral edge mode is found to have more significant effects than that of the charge mode in the low temperature.

Universal structure of the edge states of the fractional quantum Hall states

Abstract:We present an effective theory for the bulk fractional quantum Hall states on the Jain sequences on closed surfaces and show that it has a universal form whose structure does not change from fraction to fraction. The structure of this effective theory follows from the condition of global consistency of the flux attachment transformation on closed surfaces. We derive the theory of the edge states on a disk that follows naturally from this globally consistent theory on a torus. We find that, for a fully polarized two-dimensional electron gas, the edge states for all the Jain filling fractions $\nu=p/(2np+1)$ have only one propagating edge field that carries both energy and charge, and two non-propagating edge fields of topological origin that are responsible for the statistics of the excitations. Explicit results are derived for the electron and quasiparticle operators and for their propagators at the edge. We show that these operators create states with the correct charge and statistics. It is found that the tunneling density of states for all the Jain states scales with frequency as $|\omega|^{(1-\nu)/\nu}$.

Abstract:Disorder and electron-electron interaction play essential roles in the physics of electron systems in condensed matter. In two-dimensional, quantum Hall systems, extensive studies of disorder-induced localization have led to the emergence of a scaling picture with a single extended state, characterized by a power-law divergence of the localization length in the zero-temperature limit. Experimentally, scaling has been investigated via measuring the temperature dependence of plateau-to-plateau transitions between the integer quantum Hall states (IQHSs), yielding a critical exponent $\kappa\simeq 0.42$. Here we report scaling measurements in the fractional quantum Hall state (FQHS) regime where interaction plays a dominant role. Our study is partly motivated by recent calculations, based on the composite fermion theory, that suggest identical critical exponents in both IQHS and FQHS cases to the extent that the interaction between composite fermions is negligible. The samples used in our experiments are two-dimensional electron systems confined to GaAs quantum wells of exceptionally high quality. We find that $\kappa$ varies for transitions between different FQHSs observed on the flanks of Landau level filling factor $\nu=1/2$, and has a value close to that reported for the IQHS transitions only for a limited number of transitions between high-order FQHSs with intermediate strength. We discuss possible origins of the non-universal $\kappa$ observed in our experiments.

The Gap at nu = 5/2 and the Role of Disorder in Fractional Quantum Hall States

Abstract:Theoretical results for the gaps of fractional quantum Hall states are substantially larger than experimental values determined from the activated behaviour of charge transport. The disparity in the case of the enigmatic nu = 5/2 state is worrying as it amounts to a factor 20 to 30. We argue that disorder effects are responsible for this disparity and show how intrinsic gaps can be extracted from the measured transport gaps of particle-hole symmetric states within the same Landau level. We present new theoretical results for gaps at nu = 5/2 and 7/2, as well as at nu = 1/3, 2/5, 3/7 and 4/9, based on exact diagonalizations, taking account of the finite thickness of the two-dimensional electron layer and Landau level mixing effects. We find these to be consistent with the intrinsic gaps inferred from measured transport gaps. While earlier analyses (Du et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 2944 (1993)) assumed constant broadening for each sample, our results for the disorder broadening depend on the filling fraction, and appear to scale with the charge of the elementary excitations of the corresponding fractional state. This result is consistent with quasiparticle mediated dissipative transport.

Abstract:Generalizing from previous work on the integer quantum Hall effect, we construct the effective action for the analog of Laughlin states for the fractional quantum Hall effect in higher dimensions. The formalism is a generalization of the parton picture used in two spatial dimensions, the crucial ingredient being the cancellation of anomalies for the gauge fields binding the partons together. Some subtleties which exist even in two dimensions are pointed out. The effective action is obtained from a combination of the Dolbeault and Dirac index theorems. We also present expressions for some transport coefficients such as Hall conductivity and Hall viscosity for the fractional states.

Abstract:The fractional quantum Hall effect was experimentally discovered in 1982. It was observed that the Hall conductivity σyx of a two-dimensional electron system is quantized, σyx=e2/3h, in the vicinity of the Landau level filling factor ν=1/3. In 1983, Laughlin proposed a trial many-body wave function, which he claimed described a “new state of matter”—a homogeneous incompressible liquid with fractionally charged quasiparticles. Here, I develop an exact diagonalization theory that allows one to calculate the energy and other physical properties of the ground and excited states of a system of N two-dimensional Coulomb interacting electrons in a strong magnetic field. I analyze the energies, electron densities, and other physical properties of the systems with N≤7 electrons continuously as a function of magnetic field in the range 1/4≲ν<1. The results show that both the ground and excited states of the system resemble a sliding Wigner crystal whose parameters are influenced by the magnetic field. Energy gaps in the many-particle spectra appear and disappear as the magnetic field changes. I also calculate the physical properties of the ν=1/3 Laughlin state for N≤8 and compare the results with the exact ones. This comparison, as well as an analysis of some other statements published in the literature, show that the Laughlin state and its fractionally charged excitations do not describe the physical reality, neither at small N nor in the thermodynamic limit. The results obtained shed new light on the nature of the ground and excited states in the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Toward a new theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect: The many-body spectra and energy gaps at $ν<1$

Abstract:In a recent paper (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.05152v4" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.05152v4">arXiv:2206.05152v4</a>), using the exact diagonalization technique, I calculated the energy and other physical properties (electron density, pair correlation function) of a system of $N\le 7$ two-dimensional electrons at the Landau level filling factor $\nu=1/3$, and showed that the variational many-body wave function proposed for this filling factor by Laughlin is far from the true ground state. In this paper I continue to study exact properties of a small ($N\le 7$) system of two-dimensional electrons lying on the lowest Landau level. I analyze the energies and electron densities of the systems with $N\le 7$ electrons continuously as a function of the magnetic field in the range $1/4\lesssim\nu<1$. The physical mechanisms of the appearance of energy gaps in many-particle electron spectra are elucidated. The results obtained clarify the true nature of the ground and excited states of the considered systems.
