Abstract:In this article, we study rational matrix representations of VZ $p$-groups ($p$ is any prime). Utilizing our findings on VZ $p$-groups, we explicitly obtain all inequivalent irreducible rational matrix representations of all $p$-groups of order $\leq p^4$. Furthermore, we establish combinatorial formulas to determine the Wedderburn decompositions of rational group algebras for VZ $p$-groups and all $p$-groups of order $\leq p^4$, ensuring simplicity in the process.

Abstract:When can two strongly rational vertex operator algebras or 1+1d rational conformal field theories (RCFTs) be related by topological manipulations? For vertex operator algebras, the term "topological manipulations" refers to operations like passing to a conformal extension or restricting to a conformal subalgebra; for RCFTs, topological manipulations include operations like gauging (or orbifolding) a finite subpart of a generalized global symmetry or interpolating to a new theory via a topological line interface of finite quantum dimension. Inspired by results in the theory of even lattices, and also the theory of tensor categories, we say that two strongly rational vertex operator algebras are Witt equivalent if their central charges agree and if their representation categories are Witt equivalent as modular tensor categories. Two RCFTs are said to be Witt equivalent if their central charges agree and if their associated 2+1d topological field theories can be separated by a topological surface. We argue that Witt equivalence is necessary for two theories to be related by topological manipulations. We conjecture that it is also sufficient, and give proofs in various special cases. We relate this circle of ideas to the problem of classifying RCFTs, and to lore concerning deformation classes of quantum field theories. We use the notion of Witt equivalence to argue, assuming the conjectural classification of unitary, $c=1$ RCFTs, that all of the finite global symmetries of the $\mathrm{SU}(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model are invertible. Finally, we sketch a "quantum Galois theory" for chiral CFTs, which generalizes prior mathematical literature by incorporating non-invertible symmetries; we illustrate this non-invertible Galois theory in the context of the monster CFT, for which we produce a Fibonacci symmetry.

Abstract:Let $\gg$ be a simple, finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra, and let $V^k(\gg)$ denote the universal affine vertex algebra associated to $\gg$ at level $k$. The Cartan involution on $\gg$ lifts to an involution on $V^k(\gg)$, and we denote by $V^k(\gg)^{\mathbb{Z}_2}$ the orbifold, or fixed-point subalgebra, under this involution. Our main result is an explicit minimal strong finite generating set for $V^k(\gg)^{\mathbb{Z}_2}$ for generic values of $k$. In the case $\gg = \gs\gl_2$, we also determine the set of nongeneric values of $k$, where this set does not work.

Rationality of the K-theoretical capped vertex function for Nakajima quiver varieties

Abstract:In this paper we prove the rationality of the capped vertex function with descendents for arbitrary Nakajima quiver varieties with generic stability conditions. We generalise the proof given by Smirnov to the general case, which requires to use techniques of tautological classes rather than the fixed-point basis. This result confirms that the "monodromy" of the capped vertex function is trivial, which gives a strong constraint for the monodromy of the capping operators.

Abstract:We determine the level two Zhu algebra for the Heisenberg vertex operator algebra V for any choice of conformal element. We do this using only the following information for V : the internal structure of V ; the level one Zhu algebra of V already determined by the second author, along with Vander Werf and Yang; and the information the lower level Zhu algebras give regarding irreducible modules. We are able to carry out this calculation of the level two Zhu algebra for V with this minimal information by employing the general results and techniques for determining generators and relations for higher level Zhu algebras for a vertex operator algebra, as developed previously by the authors in On generators and relations for higher level Zhu algebras and applications , by Addabbo and Barron, J. Algebra , 2023. In particular, we show that the level n Zhu algebras for the Heisenberg vertex operator algebra become noncommutative at level n = 2. We also give a conjecture for the structure of the level n Zhu algebra for the Heisenberg vertex operator algebra, for any n > 2.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a freely generated pregraded vertex superalgebra, $H$ a Hamiltonian operator of $V$, and $g$ a diagonalizable automorphism of V commuting with $H$ with modulus $1$ eigenvalues. We prove that the $(g, H)$-twisted Zhu algebra of $V$ has a PBW basis, is isomorphic to the universal enveloping algebra of some non-linear Lie superalgebra, and satisfies the commutativity of BRST cohomology functors, which generalizes results of De Sole and Kac. As applications, we compute the twisted Zhu algebras of affine vertex superalgebras and affine $W$-algebras.

On the irrationality of certain $2$-adic zeta values

Abstract:Let $\zeta_2(\cdot)$ be the Kubota-Leopoldt $2$-adic zeta function. We prove that, for every nonnegative integer $s$, there exists an odd integer $j$ in the interval $[s+3,3s+5]$ such that $\zeta_2(j)$ is irrational. In particular, at least one of $\zeta_2(7),\zeta_2(9),\zeta_2(11),\zeta_2(13)$ is irrational. Our approach is inspired by the recent work of Sprang. We construct explicit rational functions. The Volkenborn integrals of these rational functions' (higher-order) derivatives produce good linear combinations of $1$ and $2$-adic Hurwitz zeta values. The most difficult step is proving that certain Volkenborn integrals are nonzero, which is resolved by carefully manipulating the binomial coefficients.

Abstract:By leveraging the physics of the Higgs branch, we argue that the conformal central charges $a$ and $c$ of an arbitrary 4d $N=2$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) are rational numbers. Our proof of the rationality of $c$ is conditioned on a well-supported conjecture about how the Higgs branch of an SCFT is encoded in its protected chiral algebra. To establish the rationality of $a$, we further rely on a widely-believed technical assumption on the high-temperature limit of the superconformal index.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a limiting procedure in which, starting from the q-lifted version (or K-theoretic five dimensional version) of the (W)AGT conjecture to be assumed in this paper, the Virasoro/W block is generated in the r-th root of unity limit in q in the 2d side, while the same limit automatically generates the projection of the five dimensional instanton partition function onto that on the ALE space R^4/Z_r. This circumvents case-by-case conjectures to be made in a wealth of examples found so far. In the 2d side, we successfully generate the super-Virasoro algebra and the proper screening charge in the q -> -1, t -> -1 limit, from the defining relation of the q-Virasoro algebra and the q-deformed Heisenberg algebra. The central charge obtained coincides with that of the minimal series carrying odd integers of the N=1 superconformal algebra. In the r-th root of unity limit in q in the 2d side, we give some evidence of the appearance of the parafermion-like currents. Exploiting the q-analysis literatures, q-deformed su(n) block is readily generated both at generic q, t and the r-th root of unity limit. In the 4d side, we derive the proper normalization function for general (n, r) that accomplishes the automatic projection through the limit.

Abstract:Conformal blocks, physical quantities of chiral 2d conformal field theory, are sheaves on the configuration spaces of the complex plane, which are mathematically formulated in terms of a vertex operator algebra, its modules and associated D-modules. We show that the operad of fundamental groupoids of the configuration spaces, the parenthesized braid operad, acts on the conformal blocks by the monodromy representation. More precisely, let $V$ be a vertex operator algebra with $V=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0} V_n$, $\dim V_n <\infty$, $V_0=\mathbb{C}\bf{1}$ and $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$ the category of $V$-modules $M$ such that $M$ is $C_1$-cofinite and the dual module $M^\vee$ is a finitely generated $V$-module. We show that the parenthesized braid operad weakly 2-categorically acts on $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$, and consequently $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$ has a structure of the (unital) pseudo-braided category. Moreover, if $V$ is rational and $C_2$-cofinite, then $V\text{-mod}_{\mathrm{f.g}}$ is a balanced braided tensor category, which gives an alternative proof of a result of Huang and Lepowsky.

Abstract:We give a complete answer to the rationality problem (up to stable $k$-equivalence) for norm one tori $T=R^{(1)}_{K/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ of $K/k$ whose Galois closures $L/k$ are $A_5\simeq {\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_4)$ and ${\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_8)$ extensions. In particular, we prove that $T$ is stably $k$-rational for $G={\rm Gal}(L/k)\simeq {\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_{8})$, $H={\rm Gal}(L/K)\simeq (C_2)^3$ and $H\simeq (C_2)^3\rtimes C_7$ where $C_n$ is the cyclic group of order $n$. Based on the result, we conjecture that $T$ is stably $k$-rational for $G\simeq {\rm PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_{2^d})$, $H\simeq (C_2)^d$ and $H\simeq (C_2)^d\rtimes C_{2^d-1}$. Some other cases $G\simeq A_n$, $S_n$, ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_{p^d})$, ${\rm SL}_n(\mathbb{F}_{p^d})$, ${\rm PGL}_n(\mathbb{F}_{p^d})$, ${\rm PSL}_n(\mathbb{F}_{p^d})$ and $H\lneq G$ are also investigated for small $n$ and $p^d$.

Abstract:Zassenhaus Conjecture for torsion units states that every augmentation one torsion unit of the integral group ring of a finite group G is conjugate to an element of G in the units of rational group algebra QG. This conjecture has been proved for nilpotent groups, metacyclic groups and some other families of groups. We prove the conjecture for cyclic-by-abelian groups.

Abstract:Consider a renormalization group flow preserving a pre-modular fusion category $\mathcal S_1$. If it flows to a rational conformal field theory, the surviving symmetry $\mathcal S_1$ flows to a pre-modular fusion category $\mathcal S_2$ with monoidal functor $F:\mathcal S_1\to\mathcal S_2$. By clarifying mathematical (especially category theoretical) meaning of renormalization group domain wall/interface or boundary condition, we find the hidden extended vertex operator (super)algebra gives a unique (up to braided equivalence) completely $(\mathcal S_1\boxtimes\mathcal S_2)'$-anisotropic representative of the Witt equivalence class $[\mathcal S_1\boxtimes\mathcal S_2]$. The mathematical conjecture is supported physically, and passes various tests in concrete examples including non/unitary minimal models, and Wess-Zumino-Witten models. In particular, the conjecture holds beyond diagonal cosets. The picture also establishes the conjectured half-integer condition, which fixes infrared conformal dimensions mod $\frac12$. It further leads to the double braiding relation, namely braiding structures jump at conformal fixed points. As an application, we solve the flow from the $E$-type minimal model $(A_{10},E_6)\to M(4,3)$.
