Abstract:In this paper, we study the large $n$ asymptotics of the expected maximum of an $n$-step random walk/Lévy flight (characterized by a Lévy index $1<\mu\leq 2$) on a line, in the presence of a constant drift $c$. For $0<\mu\leq 1$, the expected maximum is infinite, even for finite values of $n$. For $1<\mu\leq 2$, we obtain all the non-vanishing terms in the asymptotic expansion of the expected maximum for large $n$. For $c<0$ and $\mu =2$, the expected maximum approaches a non-trivial constant as $n$ gets large, while for $1<\mu < 2$, it grows as a power law $\sim n^{2-\mu}$. For $c>0$, the asymptotic expansion of the expected maximum is simply related to the one for $c<0$ by adding to the latter the linear drift term $cn$, making the leading term grow linearly for large $n$, as expected. Finally, we derive a scaling form interpolating smoothly between the cases $c=0$ and $c\ne 0$. These results are borne out by numerical simulations in excellent agreement with our analytical predictions.

Abstract:Based on a martingale theory approach, we present a complete characterization of the asymptotic behaviour of a lazy reinforced random walk (LRRW) which shows three different regimes (diffusive, critical and superdiffusive). This allows us to prove versions of the law of large numbers, the quadratic strong law, the law of iterated logarithm, the almost sure central limit theorem and the functional central limit theorem in the diffusive and critical regimes. In the superdiffusive regime we obtain a strong convergence to a random variable, including a central limit theorem and a law of iterated logarithm for the fluctuations.

Abstract:We introduce asymptotic Rényi entropies as a parameterized family of invariants for random walks on groups. These invariants interpolate between various well-studied properties of the random walk, including the growth rate of the group, the Shannon entropy, and the spectral radius. They furthermore offer large deviation counterparts of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman Theorem. We prove some basic properties of asymptotic Rényi entropies that apply to all groups, and discuss their analyticity and positivity for the free group and lamplighter groups.

Abstract:The goal of this article is two-fold: in a first part, we prove Azuma-Hoeffding type concentration inequalities around the drift for the displacement of non-elementary random walks on hyperbolic spaces. For a proper hyperbolic space M, we obtain explicit bounds that depend only on M, the size of support of the measure as in the classical case of sums of independent random variables, and on the norm of the driving probability measure in the left regular representation of the group of isometries. We obtain uniform bounds in the case of hyperbolic groups and effective bounds for simple linear groups of rank-one. In a second part, using our concentration inequalities, we give quantitative finite-time estimates on the probability that two independent random walks on the isometry group of a hyperbolic space generate a free non-abelian subgroup. Our concentration results follow from a more general, but less explicit statement that we prove for cocycles which satisfy a certain cohomological equation. For example, this also allows us to obtain subgaussian concentration bounds around the top Lyapunov exponent of random matrix products in arbitrary dimension.

Abstract:Inspired by Benjamini et al. (2010) and Windisch (2010), we consider the entropy of the random walk ranges Rn formed by the first n steps of a random walk S on a discrete group. In this setting, we show the existence of $$h_R :={\lim}_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{H(R_n)}{n}$$ called the asymptotic entropy of the ranges. A sample version of the above statement in the sense of Shannon (1948) is also proved. This answers a question raised by Windisch (2010). We also present a systematic characterization of the vanishing asymptotic entropy of the ranges. Particularly, we show that hR = 0 if and only if the random walk either is recurrent or escapes to negative infinity without left jump. By introducing the weighted digraphs Гn formed by the underlying random walk, we can characterize the recurrence property of S as the vanishing property of the quantity $${\lim}_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{H(\Gamma_n)}{n}$$ which is an analogue of hR.

Abstract:Given a random walk on a free group, we study the random walks it induces on the group's quotients. We show that the spectrum of asymptotic entropies of the induced random walks has no isolated points, except perhaps its maximum.

Abstract:Denote by LnL_n the perimeter length of the convex hull of an nn-step planar random walk whose increments have finite second moment and non-zero mean. Snyder and Steele showed that n−1Lnn^{-1} L_n converges almost surely to a deterministic limit and proved an upper bound on the variance Var[Ln]=O(n)\mathbb {V}\mathrm {ar} [ L_n] = O(n). We show that n−1Var[Ln]n^{-1} \mathbb {V}\mathrm {ar} [L_n] converges and give a simple expression for the limit, which is non-zero for walks outside a certain degenerate class. This answers a question of Snyder and Steele. Furthermore, we prove a central limit theorem for LnL_n in the non-degenerate case.

Abstract:Consider the dynamic environment governed by a Poissonian field of independent particles evolving as simple random walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The random walk on random walks model refers to a particular stochastic process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ whose evolution at time $t$ depends on the number of such particles at its location. We derive classical limit theorems for this instrumental model of a random walk in a dynamic random environment, applicable in sufficiently high dimensions. More precisely, for $d \geq 5$, we prove a strong law of large numbers and large deviation estimates. Further, for $d\geq 9$, we obtain a functional central limit theorem under the annealed law. These results are non-perturbative in the sense that they hold for any positive density of the Poissonian field. Under the aforementioned assumptions on the dimension they therefore improve on previous work on the model. Moreover, they stand in contrast to the anomalous behaviour predicted in low dimensions.

Abstract:Consider a closed surface $S$ with negative Euler characteristic, and an admissible probability measure on the fundamental group of $S$ with finite first moment with respect to some hyperbolic metric on $S$. Corresponding to each point in Teichmüller space there is an associated random walk on the hyperbolic plane. Azemar--Gadre--Gouëzel--Haettel--Lessa--Uyanik prove that the drift of this random walk is a proper function on Teichmüller space, and that this drift grows at least linearly with respect to the Teichmüller distance. In this paper we refine the result. On the one hand, by considering Jenkins-Strebel directions we show that the linear lower bound is sharp. On the other hand, we show that for Lebesgue typical Teichmüller geodesics, the drift grows exponentially. We also exhibit Teichmüller geodesics for which the growth oscillates between almost linear and exponential. Furthermore, we show that the drift is a quasiconvex function up to a multiplicative constant.

Abstract:We study distributions $F$ on $[0,\infty)$ such that for some $T\le\infty$, $F^{*2}(x,x+T]\sim 2 F(x,x+T]$. The case $T=\infty$ corresponds to $F$ being subexponential, and our analysis shows that the properties for $T<\infty$ are, in fact, very similar to this classical case. A parallel theory is developed in the presence of densities. Applications are given to random walks, the key renewal theorem, compound Poisson process and Bellman-Harris branching processes.

Abstract:In this paper, we study random walks evolving on Z in a dynamic random environment that we assume to have time correlations that decrease polynomially fast. We show a law of large numbers by generalizing methods already used for the nearest-neighbor framework to the finite-range one. This requires some new ideas to get around the absence of a monotonicity property that was crucial in the proof for the nearest-neighbour case. Our proof works both in discrete and continuous time.

Abstract:Let ${Z_n}_{n\ge 0}$ be a random walk with a negative drift and i.i.d. increments with heavy-tailed distribution and let $M=\sup_{n\ge 0}Z_n$ be its supremum. Asmussen & Kl{ü}ppelberg (1996) considered the behavior of the random walk given that $M>x$, for $x$ large, and obtained a limit theorem, as $x\to\infty$, for the distribution of the quadruple that includes the time $\rtreg=\rtreg(x)$ to exceed level $x$, position $Z_{\rtreg}$ at this time, position $Z_{\rtreg-1}$ at the prior time, and the trajectory up to it (similar results were obtained for the Cramér-Lundberg insurance risk process). We obtain here several extensions of this result to various regenerative-type models and, in particular, to the case of a random walk with dependent increments. Particular attention is given to describing the limiting conditional behavior of $\tau$. The class of models include Markov-modulated models as particular cases. We also study fluid models, the Bj{ö}rk-Grandell risk process, give examples where the order of $\tau$ is genuinely different from the random walk case, and discuss which growth rates are possible. Our proofs are purely probabilistic and are based on results and ideas from Asmussen, Schmidli & Schmidt (1999), Foss & Zachary (2002), and Foss, Konstantopoulos & Zachary (2007).

Abstract:The main goal of this text is comprehensive study of time homogeneous Markov chains on the real line whose drift tends to zero at infinity, we call such processes Markov chains with asymptotically zero drift. Traditionally this topic is referred to as Lamperti's problem. Time homogeneous Markov chains with asymptotically zero drift may be viewed as a subclass of perturbed in space random walks. The latter are of basic importance in the study of various applied stochastic models, among them branching and risk processes, queueing systems etc. Random walks generated by sums of independent identically distributed random variables are well studied, see e.g. classical textbooks by W. Feller (1971), V.V. Petrov (1975), or F. Spitzer (1964); for the recent development of the theory of random walks we refer to A.A. Borovkov and K.A. Borovkov (2008). There are many monographs devoted to various applications where random walks play a crucial role, let us just mention books on ruin and queueing processes by S. Asmussen (2000, 2003); on insurance and finance by P. Embrechts, C. Kluppelberg, and T. Mikosch (1997), and T. Rolski, H. Schmidli, V. Schmidt, and J. Teugels (1998); and on stochastic difference equations by D. Buraczewski, E. Damek and T. Mikosch (2016). In the same applied stochastic models, if one allows the process considered to be dependent on the current state of the process, we often get a Markov chain which has asymptotically zero drift, we demonstrate that in the last chapter, where we particularly discuss branching and risk processes, stochastic difference equations and ALOHA network.

Abstract:We consider a random walk in dimension $d\geq 1$ in a dynamic random environment evolving as an interchange process with rate $\gamma>0$. We only assume that the annealed drift is non-zero. We prove that the empirical velocity of the walker $X_t/t$ eventually lies in an arbitrary small ball around the annealed drift if we choose $\gamma$ large enough. This statement is thus a perturbation of the case $\gamma =+\infty$ where the environment is refreshed between each step of the walker. We extend three-way part of the results of HS15, where the environment was given by the $1$ dimensional exclusion process: $(i)$ We deal with any dimension $d\geq 1$; $(ii)$ Each particle of the interchange process carries a transition vector chosen according to an arbitrary law $\mu$; $(iii)$ We show that $X_t/t$ is not only in the same direction of the annealed drift, but that it is also close to it.

Abstract:Random walk has wide applications in many fields, such as machine learning, biology, physics, and chemistry. Random walk can be discrete or continuous in time and space. Asymmetric random walk could be described by drift-diffusion equation. The discrete asymmetric random walk provides a basis for understanding biased drift-diffusion. However, the current reported theoretical results for discrete random walks do not give a general theoretical treatment for the asymmetry due to unequal jump times. In this paper, the theoretical expressions for asymmetric random walks with unequal jump probabilities, times, and lengths are derived. The obtained theoretical results can be reduced to reported results when jump times are equal. Additionally, discrete random walk simulations are performed to verify the obtained theoretical results. There are good agreements between the theoretical predictions and simulation results.

Abstract:We consider random walk on a finite group $G$ as follows. We can consider $G$ as a group of substitutions. Randomly (i.e. with probability $U(g)=|G|^{-1}$ ) we choose a substitution $g \in G$ and execute it twice in a row, i.e. execute a substitution $g^2 \in G$ . Then the set of squares of elements of the group $G$ be a carrier of a probability $P(g)=\frac{r(g)}{|G|}\ (g \in G)$ , where $r(g)$ is a number of elements $h \in G$ such that $h^2 = g$ . Using well-known Frobenius-Schur theorem we find speed of convergence of $n$-fold convolution of $P$ to the uniform probability $U$ and conditions for the convergence.

Abstract:We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties and concentration inequalities for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, i.e the environment process. We also obtain ergodicity of the uniquely ergodic measure of the environment process as well as continuity as a function of the jump rates of the walker. As a consequence we obtain several limit theorems, such as law of large numbers, Einstein relation, central limit theorem and concentration properties for the position of the walker.
