Abstract:We study the topological dynamics of the action of an acylindrically hyperbolic group on the space of its infinite index convex cocompact subgroups by conjugation. We show that, for any suitable probability measure $\mu$, random walks with respect to $\mu$ will produce elements with strong mixing properties for this action asymptotically almost surely. In particular, when the group has no finite normal subgroups this implies that the action is highly topologically transitive. Along the way, we prove technical results about convex cocompact subgroups which allow us to extend some results on random walks of Abbott and the first author.

Abstract:Let $(g_n)_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random elements with law $\mu$ on the general linear group $\textrm{GL}(V)$, where $V=\mathbb R^d$. Consider the random walk $G_n : = g_n \ldots g_1$, $n \geq 1$, and the coefficients $\langle f, G_n v \rangle$, where $v \in V$ and $f \in V^*$. Under suitable moment assumptions on $\mu$, we prove the strong and weak laws of large numbers and the central limit theorem for $\langle f, G_n v \rangle$, which improve the previous results established under the exponential moment condition on $\mu$. We further demonstrate the Berry-Esseen bound, the Edgeworth expansion, the Cramér type moderate deviation expansion and the local limit theorem with moderate deviations for $\langle f, G_n v \rangle$ under the exponential moment condition. Under a subexponential moment condition on $\mu$, we also show a Berry-Esseen type bound and the moderate deviation principle for $\langle f, G_n v \rangle$. Our approach is based on various versions of the Hölder regularity of the invariant measure of the Markov chain $G_n \!\cdot \! x = \mathbb R G_n v$ on the projective space of $V$ with the starting point $x = \mathbb R v$.

Entropies and Poisson boundaries of random walks on groups with rapid decay

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable group and $\mu$ a probability measure on $G$. We build a new framework to compute asymptotic quantities associated with the $\mu$-random walk on $G$, using methods from harmonic analysis on groups and Banach space theory, most notably the complex interpolation. It is shown that under mild conditions, the Lyapunov exponent of the $\mu$-random walk with respect to a weight $\omega$ on $G$ can be computed in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the spectral radius of $\mu$ in an ascending class of weighted group algebras, and we prove that for natural choices of $\omega$ and $\mu$, the Lyapunov exponent vanishes. Also, we show that the Avez entropy of the $\mu$-random walk can be realized as the Lyapunov exponent of $\mu$ with respect to a suitable weight. Next, by considering the spectral radius in the algebras of $p$-pseudofunctions on $G$, we introduce a new asymptotic quantity, which we call convolution entropy. We show that for groups with the property of rapid decay, the convolution entropy coincides with the Avez entropy. Subsequently, we apply our results to stationary dynamical systems consisting of an action of a group with the property of rapid decay on a probability space. We prove that whenever the associated Koopman representation is weakly contained in the left-regular representation of the group, then the Avez entropy coincides with the Furstenberg entropy of the stationary space. This gives a characterization of (Zimmer) amenability for actions of rapid decay groups on stationary spaces.

Multislicing and effective equidistribution for random walks on some homogeneous spaces

Abstract:We consider a random walk on a homogeneous space $G/\Lambda$ where $G$ is $\mathrm{SO}(2,1)$ or $\mathrm{SO}(3,1)$ and $\Lambda$ is a lattice. The walk is driven by a probability measure $\mu$ on $G$ whose support generates a Zariski-dense subgroup. We show that for every starting point $x \in G/\Lambda$ which is not trapped in a finite $\mu$-invariant set, the $n$-step distribution $\mu^{*n}*\delta_{x}$ of the walk equidistributes toward the Haar measure. Moreover, under arithmetic assumptions on the pair $(\Lambda, \mu)$, we show the convergence occurs at an exponential rate, tempered by the obstructions that $x$ may be high in a cusp or close to a finite orbit. Our approach is substantially different from that of Benoist-Quint, whose equidistribution statements only hold in Cesàro average and are not quantitative, that of Bourgain-Furman-Lindenstrauss-Mozes concerning the torus case, and that of Lindenstrauss-Mohammadi-Wang and Yang about the analogous problem for unipotent flows. A key new feature of our proof is the use of a new phenomenon which we call multislicing. The latter is a generalization of the discretized projection theorems à la Bourgain and we believe it presents independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper we study random walks on dynamical random environments in $1 + 1$ dimensions. Assuming that the environment is invariant under space-time shifts and fulfills a mild mixing hypothesis, we establish a law of large numbers and a concentration inequality around the asymptotic speed. The mixing hypothesis imposes a polynomial decay rate of covariances on the environment with sufficiently high exponent but does not impose uniform mixing. Examples of environments for which our methods apply include the contact process and Markovian environments with a positive spectral gap, such as the East model. For the East model we also obtain that the distinguished zero satisfies a Law of Large Numbers with strictly positive speed.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an application to the random distance-$t$ walk in finite planes and derive asymptotic formulas (as $q \to \infty$) for the probability of return to start point after $\ell$ steps based on the "vertical" equidistribution of Kloosterman sums established by N. Katz. The application of these deep results from number theory allow a determination of the second order terms in the answers that simpler spectral gap/mixing rate methods do not. This work relies on a "Euclidean" association scheme studied in prior work of W.M.Kwok, E. Bannai, O. Shimabukuro and H. Tanaka. We also provide a self-contained discussion of the P-matrix and intersection numbers of this scheme for convenience in our application as well as a more explicit form for the intersection numbers in the planar case.

Abstract:We introduce a multidimensional walk with memory and random tendency. The asymptotic behaviour is characterized, proving a law of large numbers and showing a phase transition from diffusive to superdiffusive regimes. In first case, we obtain a functional limit theorem to Gaussian vectors. In superdiffusive, we obtain strong convergence to a non-Gaussian random vector and characterize its moments.

Abstract:Consider the dynamic environment governed by a Poissonian field of independent particles evolving as simple random walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The random walk on random walks model refers to a particular stochastic process on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ whose evolution at time $t$ depends on the number of such particles at its location. We derive classical limit theorems for this instrumental model of a random walk in a dynamic random environment, applicable in sufficiently high dimensions. More precisely, for $d \geq 5$, we prove a strong law of large numbers and large deviation estimates. Further, for $d\geq 9$, we obtain a functional central limit theorem under the annealed law. These results are non-perturbative in the sense that they hold for any positive density of the Poissonian field. Under the aforementioned assumptions on the dimension they therefore improve on previous work on the model. Moreover, they stand in contrast to the anomalous behaviour predicted in low dimensions.

Abstract:Consider a closed surface $S$ with negative Euler characteristic, and an admissible probability measure on the fundamental group of $S$ with finite first moment with respect to some hyperbolic metric on $S$. Corresponding to each point in Teichmüller space there is an associated random walk on the hyperbolic plane. Azemar--Gadre--Gouëzel--Haettel--Lessa--Uyanik prove that the drift of this random walk is a proper function on Teichmüller space, and that this drift grows at least linearly with respect to the Teichmüller distance. In this paper we refine the result. On the one hand, by considering Jenkins-Strebel directions we show that the linear lower bound is sharp. On the other hand, we show that for Lebesgue typical Teichmüller geodesics, the drift grows exponentially. We also exhibit Teichmüller geodesics for which the growth oscillates between almost linear and exponential. Furthermore, we show that the drift is a quasiconvex function up to a multiplicative constant.

Abstract:Let $X_1, X_2, \dots$ be independent, identically distributed random variables taking values from a compact metrizable group $G$. We prove that the random walk $S_k=X_1 X_2 \cdots X_k$, $k=1,2,\dots$ equidistributes in any given Borel subset of $G$ with probability $1$ if and only if $X_1$ is not supported on any proper closed subgroup of $G$, and $S_k$ has an absolutely continuous component for some $k \ge 1$. More generally, the sum $\sum_{k=1}^N f(S_k)$, where $f:G \to \mathbb{R}$ is Borel measurable, is shown to satisfy the strong law of large numbers and the law of the iterated logarithm. We also prove the central limit theorem with remainder term for the same sum, and construct an almost sure approximation of the process $\sum_{k \le t} f(S_k)$ by a Wiener process provided $S_k$ converges to the Haar measure in the total variation metric.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group with a non-elementary action on a proper CAT(0) space $X$, and let $\mu$ be a measure on $G$ such that the random walk $(Z_n)_n$ generated by $\mu$ has finite second moment on $X$. Let $o$ be a basepoint in $X$, and assume that there exists a rank one isometry in $G$. We prove that in this context, $(Z_n o )_n$ satisfies a Central Limit Theorem, namely that the random variables $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}(d(Z_n o, o) - n \lambda) $ converge in law to a non-degenerate Gaussian distribution $N_\mu$, for $\lambda$ the (positive) drift of the random walk. The strategy relies on the use of hyperbolic models introduced by H. Petyt, A. Zalloum and D. Spriano, which are analogues of curve graphs and cubical hyperplanes for the class of CAT(0) spaces. As a side result, we prove that the probability that the nth-step $Z_n$ acts on $X$ as a contracting isometry goes to 1 as $n$ goes to infinity.

Abstract:We study the relationship between tournaments and random walks. This connection was first observed by Erdős and Moser. Winston and Kleitman came close to showing that $S_n=\Theta(4^n/n^{5/2})$. Building on this, and works by Takács, these asymptotic bounds were confirmed by Kim and Pittel. In this work, we verify Moser's conjecture that $S_n\sim C4^n/n^{5/2}$, using limit theory for integrated random walk bridges. Moreover, we show that $C$ can be described in terms of random walks. Combining this with a recent proof and number-theoretic description of $C$ by the second author, we obtain an analogue of Louchard's formula, for the Laplace transform of the squared Brownian excursion/Airy area measure. Finally, we describe the scaling limit of random score sequences, in terms of the Kolmogorov excursions, studied recently by Bär, Duraj and Wachtel. Our results can also be interpreted as answering questions related to a class of random polymers, which began with influential work of Sinaĭ. From this point of view, our methods yield the precise asymptotics of a persistence probability, related to the pinning/wetting models from statistical physics, that was estimated up to constants by Aurzada, Dereich and Lifshits, as conjectured by Caravenna and Deuschel.

Abstract:Given suitable functions $V, \Psi:[0,\infty) \to [0,\infty)$, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on $V,\Psi$ for the existence of a metric measure space and a symmetric diffusion process that satisfies sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates with volume growth profile $V$ and escape time profile $\Psi$. We prove sufficiency by constructing a new family of diffusions. Special cases of this construction also leads to a new family of infinite graphs whose simple random walks satisfy sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates with prescribed volume growth and escape time profiles. In particular, these random walks on graphs generalizes earlier results of Barlow who considered the case $V(r)=r^\alpha$ and $\Psi(r)=r^\beta$ (Rev Mat Iberoam 2004). The family of diffusions we construct have martingale dimension one but can have arbitrarily high spectral dimension. Therefore our construction shows the impossibility of obtaining non-trivial lower bounds on martingale dimension in terms of spectral dimension which is in contrast with upper bounds on martingale dimension using spectral dimension obtained by Hino (Probab Theory Relat Fields 2013).

Abstract:We explore some of the connections between the local picture left by the trace of simple random walk on a discrete cylinder with base a d-dimensional torus, d at least 2, of side-length N running for times of order N^{2d} and the model of random interlacements recently introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0704.2560" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0704.2560">arXiv:0704.2560</a>. In particular we show that when the base becomes large, in the neighborhood of a point of the cylinder with a vertical component of order N^d, the complement of the set of points visited by the walk up to times of order N^{2d}, is close in distribution to the law of the vacant set of random interlacements at a level which is determined by an independent Brownian local time. The limit of the local pictures in the neighborhood of finitely many points is also derived.
