Abstract:Soft robot is a novel category of robotics. Possessing the characteristics of high flexibility, high environmental adaptability, high compatibility and multi-functionality, soft robots are quite promising in research and practical appli-cations. The performances of soft robots are largely enhanced by the unique properties of smart materials, which play a crucial role in the design and application of soft robots. This paper summarizes existing soft robots by their actuat-ing mechanisms and functions into typical categories as worm-like peristaltic moving, caterpillar-like bending actuation, fish-swimming soft robotics. Furthermore, by their actuating mechanisms, soft robots are summarized as air pressure powered, shape memory alloy (SMA), ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC), dielectric elastomer (DE), responsive hydrogel, chemical combustion powered robotics. This paper reviews and discusses the fabricating method, the current challenges and future prospects of soft robots.

Abstract:Inspired from the natural invertebrates like worms and starfish, we propose a novel elastomeric smart structure. The smart structure can function as a soft robot. The soft robot is made from a flexible elastomer as the body and driven by dielectric elastomer as the muscle. Finite element simulations based on nonlinear field theory are conducted to investigate the working condition of the structure, and guide the design of the smart structure. The effects of the pre-stretch, structural stiffness and voltage on the performance of the smart structure are investigated. This work can guide the design of soft robot.

Abstract:Soft materials are inherently flexible and make suitable candidates for soft robots intended for specific tasks that would otherwise not be achievable (e.g., smart grips capable of picking up objects without prior knowledge of their stiffness). Moreover, soft robots exploit the mechanics of their fundamental building blocks and aim to provide targeted functionality without the use of electronics or wiring. Despite recent progress, locomotion in soft robotics applications has remained a relatively young field with open challenges yet to overcome. Justly, harnessing structural instabilities and utilizing bistable actuators have gained importance as a solution. This report focuses on substrate-free reconfigurable structures composed of multistable unit cells with a nonconvex strain energy potential, which can exhibit structural transitions and produce strongly nonlinear transition waves. The energy released during the transition, if sufficient, balances the dissipation and kinetic energy of the system and forms a wave front that travels through the structure to effect its permanent or reversible reconfiguration. We exploit a triangular unit cell’s design space and provide general guidelines for unit cell selection. Using a continuum description, we predict and map the resulting structure’s behavior for various geometric and material properties. The structural motion created by these strongly nonlinear metamaterials has potential applications in propulsion in soft robotics, morphing surfaces, reconfigurable devices, mechanical logic, and controlled energy absorption.

Abstract:Recently, significant progress has been made in the field of flexible bulk metamaterials composed of soft and elastic materials, unlocking the potential for achieving programmable non-linear mechanical responses, such as shape morphing, energy absorption, and information processing. However, the majority of these metamaterials utilize expensive hyperelastic materials and require complex fabrication processes. Additionally, constructing eco-friendly stiff constituents for these metamaterials remains challenging due to their limited elastic limit strains (<0.1). Here, we propose a systematic design strategy by combining curved beams with chiral metastructures to generate a family of three-dimensional programmable resilient mechanical metamaterials without relying on flexible or hyperelastic constituents. These tiled metamaterials demonstrate robust, anisotropic and non-linear resilience under large elastic compression strains (>0.75), while exhibiting a programmable effective modulus reduction of nearly 6 orders of magnitude compared to the native stiff components. Furthermore, leveraging their stable resilience under high-frequency stimuli, we successfully developed a meter-scale soft robot capable of traversing complex narrow scenarios on demand without the need for flexible materials or sophisticated pipelines. We anticipate that these mechanical metamaterials could serve as a universal platform for programmable active dampers, modular flexible robots, and medical rehabilitation equipment at various scales.
Advanced Artificial Muscle for Flexible Material-Based Reconfigurable Soft Robots.

Abstract:Flexible material-based soft robots are widely used in various areas. In many situations, the suitable soft robots should be rapidly fabricated to complete the urgent tasks (such as rescue), so the facile fabricating methods of the multifunctional soft robots are still in urgent needs. In this work, the origami structure is employed to design vacuum-powered silicone rubber artificial muscles, which can perform multiple motions, including contraction, bending, twisting, and radial motions. Artificial muscles can be used for rapid reconfiguration of different soft robots, just like the "building bricks". Based on these artificial muscles, four soft robots with different functions, including an omnidirectional quadruped robot, a flexible gripper, a flexible wrist, and a pipe-climbing robot, are reconfigured to complete different tasks. The proposed origami artificial muscles offer a facile and rapid fabricating method of flexible material-based soft robots, and also greatly improve the utilization rate of flexible materials.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials are artificial structures with structure-dependent properties. They often harness zero-energy deformation modes, e.g., a single shape change that limits their applications, resulting in the need for changeable mechanical responses. We address this limitation by using a flexible material, called light-responsive shape-memory polydimethylsiloxane (SM-PDMS), to introduce reprogrammability into flexible mechanical metamaterials. The SM-PDMS is a rubber-like functional material with shape-memory and photothermal effects. Specfically, we propose three different reprogrammable SM-PDMS metamaterials with different mechanical responses, namely, an auxetic SM-PDMS, a chiral SM-PDMS, and a buckling-induced SM-PDMS. Finally, a buckling-induced SM-PDMS was harnessed to make a soft actuator with a reprogrammable preferred locomotion direction. Despite focusing on reprogramming flexible metamaterials using the light-induced SM effect, our strategy can be easily extended to other structures and smart materials. More importantly, our strategy paves the way to change the mechanical responses for similar architectures. Furthermore, our designed flexible metamaterials have the potential for different applications, such as soft robots, actuation, adaptive safety, and sports equipment.

Abstract:Soft robotics has been receiving increasing attention due to its flexibility and adaptability offered by embodied intelligence. A soft robot may undergo complex motions including stretching, contraction, bending, twisting, and their intricate combinations. Among these basic motions, bending plays a central role when a robot accomplishes tasks such as locomotion, grasping and manipulation. Although a rich repertoire of bending mechanisms has been reported, a systematic and rational design framework is still lack. In this paper, we provide a novel design strategy for soft bending actuators which allows integral modeling and design optimization. Nowadays, metamaterials are emerging as a new tool for soft robots, by encoding the desired complex motions directly within the material architectures, leading to conformable monolithic systems. We combine pneumatic actuators and flexible metamaterials to provide an alternative solution to soft bending actuators, with advantages of compact design, large bending motion, and convenient fabrication. A regular pneumatic chamber is embedded inside auxetic and non-auxetic metamaterials, and bending is generated when inflated. We carry out dimensionless analysis to identify the key design variables. To provide insight into design optimization, we develop a computation framework by modeling metamaterial structures with beam elements and the inner chamber with shell elements as an integral part, allowing efficient simulation of the coupled system. We systematically investigate how the bending angle varies with the key design variables and find the optimal design parameters. The experimental results are well in line with the simulation, and a remarkable bending motion of 0.437mm is achieved.

Bridging Hard and Soft: Mechanical Metamaterials Enable Rigid Torque Transmission in Soft Robots

Abstract:Torque and continuous rotation are fundamental methods of actuation and manipulation in rigid robots. Soft robot arms use soft materials and structures to mimic the passive compliance of biological arms that bend and extend. This use of compliance prevents soft arms from continuously transmitting and exerting torques to interact with their environment. Here, we show how relying on patterning structures instead of inherent material properties allows soft robotic arms to remain compliant while continuously transmitting torque to their environment. We demonstrate a soft robotic arm made from a pair of mechanical metamaterials that act as compliant constant-velocity joints. The joints are up to 52 times stiffer in torsion than bending and can bend up to 45°. This robot arm can continuously transmit torque while deforming in all other directions. The arm's mechanical design achieves high motion repeatability (0.4 mm and 0.1°) when tracking trajectories. We then trained a neural network to learn the inverse kinematics, enabling us to program the arm to complete tasks that are challenging for existing soft robots such as installing light bulbs, fastening bolts, and turning valves. The arm's passive compliance makes it safe around humans and provides a source of mechanical intelligence, enabling it to adapt to misalignment when manipulating objects. This work will bridge the gap between hard and soft robotics with applications in human assistance, warehouse automation, and extreme environments.

Abstract:Conventionally, engineers have employed rigid materials to fabricate precise, predictable robotic systems, which are easily modelled as rigid members connected at discrete joints. Natural systems, however, often match or exceed the performance of robotic systems with deformable bodies. Cephalopods, for example, achieve amazing feats of manipulation and locomotion without a skeleton; even vertebrates such as humans achieve dynamic gaits by storing elastic energy in their compliant bones and soft tissues. Inspired by nature, engineers have begun to explore the design and control of soft-bodied robots composed of compliant materials. This Review discusses recent developments in the emerging field of soft robotics.

Abstract:Lattice metamaterials exhibit diverse functions and complex spatial deformations by rational structural design. Here, lattice metamaterials are exploited to design pneumatic soft robots with programmable bending, twisting, and elongation deformations. The system comprises an elastomeric tube reinforced by lattice metamaterials. We develop an analytical framework to model the twisting, bending, and elongation finite deformation taking into account the geometric orthotropy and nonlinear elasticity. We experimentally validate our modeling approach and investigate the effects of geometric patterns and input loading on the soft actuators' deformation. Theoretical guided design of lateral-climbing soft robots and exploration soft manipulators are demonstrated. The soft actuator could exhibit a combined twisting–bending–elongation deformation by lattice superimposition. The proposed structural design method paves the way for designing soft robots with complex and dexterous deformations.

Abstract:Inspired by the adaptive features exhibited by biological organisms like the octopus, soft machines that can tune their shape and mechanical properties have shown great potential in applications involving unstructured and continuously changing environments. However, current soft machines are far from achieving the same level of adaptability as their biological counterparts, hampered by limited real-time tunability and severely deficient reprogrammable space of properties and functionalities. As a steppingstone toward fully adaptive soft robots and smart interactive machines, an encodable multifunctional material that uses graphical stiffness patterns is introduced here to in situ program versatile mechanical capabilities without requiring additional infrastructure. Through independently switching the digital binary stiffness states (soft or rigid) of individual constituent units of a simple auxetic structure with elliptical voids, in situ and gradational tunability is demonstrated here in various mechanical qualities such as shape-shifting and -memory, stress-strain response, and Poisson's ratio under compressive load as well as application-oriented functionalities such as tunable and reusable energy absorption and pressure delivery. This digitally programmable material is expected to pave the way toward multienvironment soft robots and interactive machines.

Abstract:Metamaterials have been a hot topic over the past 2 decades, involving scientific research directions in materials, engineering, and physics. Among them, programmable mechanical metamaterials are an emerging class of metamaterials that offer intelligent programming and control of diverse mechanical properties, such as stiffness, damping, thermal expansion, and shape memory behavior. Meanwhile, it can be rationally designed to have specific geometric architectures and programming strategies in response to different types of external stimuli, such as temperature, electric and magnetic fields, and mechanical loads. These intelligent mechanical properties have a wide range of potential applications due to their uniqueness and controllability, including soft robotics, adaptive structures, and wearable devices. Thus, the programming strategies to achieve them are particularly critical. Combined with related programmable thinking concepts, this paper briefly reviews programming strategies for programmable mechanical metamaterials, including geometric, structural, and external driving force programming. Meanwhile, this paper presents the principles of programming strategies classified according to different programmable mechanical properties (e.g., programmable stiffness, deformation, multistability) and looks ahead to the challenges and opportunities for future research.

Abstract:Soft robots have revolutionized machine interactions with humans and the environment to enable safe operations. The fixed morphology of these soft robots dictates their mechanical performance, including strength and stiffness, which limits their task range and applications. Proposed here are modular, reconfigurable soft robots with the capabilities of changing their morphology and adjusting their stiffness to perform versatile object handling and planar or spatial operational tasks. The reconfiguration and tunable interconnectivity between the elemental soft, pneumatically driven actuation units is made possible through integrated permanent magnets with coils (PMC). The proposed concept of attaching/detaching actuators enables these robots to be easily rearranged in various configurations to change the morphology of the system. While the potential for these actuators allows for arbitrary reconfiguration through parallel or serial connection on their four sides, we demonstrate here a configuration called ManusBot. ManusBot is a hand-like structure with digits and palm capable of individual actuation. The capabilities of this system are demonstrated through specific examples of stiffness modulation, variable payload capacity, and structure forming for enhanced and versatile object manipulation and operations. The proposed modular, soft robotic system with interconnecting capabilities significantly expands the versatility of operational tasks as well as the adaptability of handling objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights using a single system.

Abstract:Constant development of soft robots, stretchable electronics, or flexible medical devices forces the research to look for new flexible structures that can change their shapes under external physical stimuli. This study presents a soft robotic structure that can change its shape into different three-dimensional (3D) configurations in response to electric current flown through the embedded liquid-metal conductors enabling electromagnetic actuation. The proposed structure is composed of volumetric pixels (voxels) connected in series where each can be independently controlled by the inputs of electrical current and vacuum pressure. A single voxel is made up of a granular core (GC) with an outer shell made of silicone rubber. The shell has embedded channels filled with liquid metal. The structure changes its shape under the Lorentz force produced by the liquid metal channel under applied electrical current. The GC allows the structure to maintain its shape after deformation even when the current is shut off. This is possible due to the granular jamming effect. In this study, we show the concept, the results of multiphysics simulation, and experimental characterization, including among other techniques, such as 3D digital image correlation or 3D magnetic field scanning, to study the different properties of the structure. We prove that the proposed structure can morph into many different shapes with the amplitude higher than 10 mm, and this process can be both fully reversible and repeatable.

Abstract:Soft robots complement the existing efforts of miniaturizing conventional, rigid robots, and have the potential to revolutionize areas such as military equipment and biomedical devices. This type of system can accomplish tasks in complex and time-varying environments through geometric reconfiguration induced by diverse external stimuli, such as heat, solvent, light, electric field, magnetic field, and mechanical field. Approaches to achieve reconfigurable mesostructures are essential to the design and fabrication of soft robots. Existing studies mainly focus on four key aspects: reconfiguration mechanisms, fabrication schemes, deformation control principles, and practical applications. This review presents a detailed survey of methodologies for morphable mesostructures triggered by a wide range of stimuli, with a number of impressive examples, demonstrating high degrees of deformation complexities and varied multi-functionalities. The latest progress based on the development of new materials and unique design concepts is highlighted. An outlook on the remaining challenges and open opportunities is provided.

Abstract:We create mechanical metamaterials whose response to uniaxial compression can be programmed by lateral confinement, allowing monotonic, nonmonotonic, and hysteretic behavior. These functionalities arise from a broken rotational symmetry which causes highly nonlinear coupling of deformations along the two primary axes of these metamaterials. We introduce a soft mechanism model which captures the programmable mechanics, and outline a general design strategy for confined mechanical metamaterials. Finally, we show how inhomogeneous confinement can be explored to create multistability and giant hysteresis.

Abstract:Versatile programmable materials have long been envisioned that can reconfigure themselves to adapt to changing use cases in adaptive infrastructure, space exploration, disaster response, and more. We introduce a robotic structural system as an implementation of programmable matter, with mechanical performance and scale on par with conventional high-performance materials and truss systems. Fiber-reinforced composite truss-like building blocks form strong, stiff, and lightweight lattice structures as mechanical metamaterials. Two types of mobile robots operate over the exterior surface and through the interior of the system, performing transport, placement, and reversible fastening using the intrinsic lattice periodicity for indexing and metrology. Leveraging programmable matter algorithms to achieve scalability in size and complexity, this system design enables robust collective automated assembly and reconfiguration of large structures with simple robots. We describe the system design and experimental results from a 256–unit cell assembly demonstration and lattice mechanical testing, as well as a demonstration of disassembly and reconfiguration. The assembled structural lattice material exhibits ultralight mass density (0.0103 grams per cubic centimeter) with high strength and stiffness for its weight ( 11.38 kilopascals and 1.1129 megapascals, respectively), a material performance realm appropriate for applications like space structures. With simple robots and structure, high mass-specific structural performance, and competitive throughput, this system demonstrates the potential for self-reconfiguring autonomous metamaterials for diverse applications.

Abstract:Abstract Metamaterials have attracted wide scientific interest to break fundamental bounds on materials properties. Recently, the field has been extending to coupled physical phenomena where one physics acts as the driving force for another. Stimuli-responsive or 4D metamaterials have been demonstrated for thermo-elasticity, magneto-optics or piezo-electricity. Herein, a soft, ultra-compact and accurate microrobot is described which can achieve controlled motion under thermal stimuli. The system consists of an organized assembly of two functional structures: a rotational and a translational element. Both elements are designed basing upon the principle of the thermoelastic bilayer plate that bends as temperature changes. Samples are fabricated using gray-tone lithography from a single polymer but with two different laser writing powers, making each part different in its thermal and mechanical behaviors. Excellent motion-controllable, reversible and stable features in a dry environment are verified by simulations and experiments, revealing broad application prospects for the designed soft micro actuators.
