Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected finite graph. Backman, Baker, and Yuen have constructed a family of explicit and easy-to-describe bijections $g_{\sigma,\sigma^*}$ between spanning trees of $G$ and $(\sigma,\sigma^*)$-compatible orientations, where the $(\sigma,\sigma^*)$-compatible orientations are the representatives of equivalence classes of orientations up to cycle-cocycle reversal which are determined by a cycle signature $\sigma$ and a cocycle signature $\sigma^*$. Their proof makes use of zonotopal subdivisions and the bijections $g_{\sigma,\sigma^*}$ are called \emph{geometric bijections}. In this paper, we extend the geometric bijections to subgraph-orientation correspondences. Moreover, we extend the geometric constructions accordingly. Our proofs are purely combinatorial, even for the geometric constructions. We also provide geometric proofs for partial results, which make use of zonotopal tiling, relate to Backman, Baker, and Yuen's method, and motivate our combinatorial constructions. Finally, we explain that the main results hold for \emph{regular matroids}.

Abstract:In 1976 Frank and Gy{á}rf{á}s gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an orientation in an arbitrary graph $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, the out-degree $d^+_G(v)$ of it satisfies $p(v)\le d^+_G(v)\le q(v)$, where $p$ and $q$ are two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $p\le q$. In this paper, we give a sufficient edge-connectivity condition for the existence of an orientation in $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d^+_G(v)\in \{p(v),q(v)\}$, provided that for each vertex $v$, $p(v)\le \frac{1}{2}d_G(v) \le q(v)$, $|q(v)-p(v)|\le k$, and there is $t(v)\in \{p(v),q(v)\}$ in which $|E(G)|=\sum_{v\in V(G)}t(v)$. This result is a generalization of a theorem due to Thomassen (2012) on the existence of modulo orientations in highly edge-connected graphs.

Abstract:We show that Lubin-Tate spectra at the prime $2$ are Real oriented and Real Landweber exact. The proof is by application of the Goerss-Hopkins-Miller theorem to algebras with involution. For each height $n$, we compute the entire homotopy fixed point spectral sequence for $E_n$ with its $C_2$-action given by the formal inverse. We study, as the height varies, the Hurewicz images of the stable homotopy groups of spheres in the homotopy of these $C_2$-fixed points.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple graph and let $p$ and $q$ be two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $p< q$ in which for each $v\in V(G)$, $q(v) \ge \frac{1}{2}d_G(v)$ and $p(v) \ge \frac{1}{2} q(v)-2$. In this note, we show that $G$ has an orientation such that for each vertex $v$, $d^+_G(v)\in\{p(v),p(v)+1,q(v)-1,q(v)\}$ if and only if it has an orientation such that for each vertex $v$, $p(v) \le d^+_G(v)\le q(v)$ where $d^+_G(v)$ denotes the out-degree of $v$ in $G$. From this result, we refine a result due to Addario-Berry, Dalal, and Reed (2008) in bipartite simple graphs on the existence of degree constrained factors.

A note on the invertibility of oriented graphs

Abstract:For an oriented graph $D$ and a set $X\subseteq V(D)$, the inversion of $X$ in $D$ is the graph obtained from $D$ by reversing the orientation of each edge that has both endpoints in $X$. Define the inversion number of $D$, denoted $inv(D)$, to be the minimum number of inversions required to obtain an acyclic oriented graph from $D$. We show that $inv({D_1 \rightarrow D_2}) > inv(D_1)$, for any oriented graphs $D_1$ and $D_2$ such that $inv(D_1) = inv(D_2) \ge 1$. This resolves a question of Aubian, Havet, Hörsch, Klingelhoefer, Nisse, Rambaud and Vermande. Our proof proceeds via a natural connection between the graph inversion number and the subgraph complementation number.

Hecke orbits and the Mordell-Lang conjecture in distinguished categories

Abstract:Inspired by recent work of Aslanyan and Daw, we introduce the notion of $\Sigma$-orbits in the general framework of distinguished categories. In the setting of connected Shimura varieties, this concept contains many instances of (generalized) Hecke orbits from the literature. In the setting of semiabelian varieties, a $\Sigma$-orbit is a subgroup of finite rank. We show that our $\Sigma$-orbits have useful functorial properties and we use them to formulate two general statements of Mordell-Lang type (a weak one and an apparently stronger one). We prove an analogue of a recent theorem of Aslanyan and Daw in this general setting, which we apply to deduce an unconditional result about unlikely intersections in a fibered power of the Legendre family.

The universal property of bordism of commuting involutions

Abstract:We propose a formalism to capture the structure of the equivariant bordism rings of smooth manifolds with commuting involutions. We introduce the concept of an oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra, an algebraic structure featuring representation graded rings for all elementary abelian 2-groups, connected by restriction homomorphisms, a pre-Euler class, and an inverse Thom class; this data is subject to one exactness property. Besides equivariant bordism, oriented global ring spectra also give rise to oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras, so examples abound. Inverting the inverse Thom classes yields a global 2-torsion group law. In this sense, our oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras are delocalized generalizations of global 2-torsion group laws. Our main result shows that equivariant bordism for elementary abelian 2-groups is an initial oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra. Several other interesting equivariant homology theories can also be characterized, on elementary abelian 2-groups, by similar universal properties. We prove that stable equivariant bordism is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an invertible orientation; that Bredon homology with constant mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an additive orientation; and that Borel equivariant homology with mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an orientation that is both additive and invertible.

Abstract:The family $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ consisting of graph-group pairs $(\Gamma, G)$, where $\Gamma$ is a finite, connected, 4-valent graph admitting a $G$-vertex-, and $G$-edge-transitive, but not $G$-arc-transitive action, has recently been examined using a normal quotient methodology. A subfamily of $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ has been identified as `basic', due to the fact that all members of $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ are normal covers of at least one basic pair. We provide an explicit classification of those basic pairs $(\Gamma, G)$ which have at least two independent cyclic $G$-normal quotients (these are $G$-normal quotients which are not extendable to a common cyclic normal quotient).

Abstract:Given a graph $G$, we say that an orientation $D$ of $G$ is a KT orientation if, for all $u, v \in V(D)$, there is at most one directed path (in any direction) between $u$ and $v$. Graphs that admit such orientations have been used by Kierstead and Trotter (1992), Carbonero, Hompe, Moore, and Spirkl (2023), Briański, Davies, and Walczak (2024), and Girão, Illingworth, Powierski, Savery, Scott, Tamitegami, and Tan (2024) to construct graphs with large chromatic number and small clique number that served as counterexamples to various conjectures. Motivated by this, we consider which graphs admit KT orientations (named after Kierstead and Trotter). In particular, we construct a graph family with small independence number (sublinear in the number of vertices) which admits a KT orientation. We show that the problem of determining whether a given graph admits a KT orientation is NP-complete, even if we restrict ourselves to planar graphs. Finally, we provide an algorithm to decide if a graph with maximum degree at most 3 admits a KT orientation, whereas, for graphs with maximum degree 4, the problem remains NP-complete.

Basic Tetravalent Oriented Graphs with Cyclic Normal Quotients

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ denote the family of all graph-group pairs $(\Gamma, G)$ where $\Gamma$ is finite, 4-valent, connected, and $G$-oriented ($G$-half-arc-transitive). A subfamily of $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ has recently been identified as `basic' in the sense that all graphs in this family are normal covers of at least one basic member. In this paper we provide a description of such basic pairs which have at least one $G$-normal quotient which is isomorphic to a cycle graph. In doing so, we produce many new infinite families of examples and solve several problems posed in the recent literature on this topic. This result completes a research project aiming to provide a description of all basic pairs in $\mathcal{OG}(4)$.

Abstract:This is the second paper of a series that develops a bordism-theoretic point of view on orientations in enumerative geometry. The first paper is <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.06818" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.06818">arXiv:2312.06818</a>. This paper focuses on those applications to gauge theory that can be established purely using formal arguments and calculations from algebraic topology. We prove that the orientability of moduli spaces of connections in gauge theory for all principal $G$-bundles $P\to X$ over compact spin $n$-manifolds at once is equivalent to the vanishing of a certain morphism $\Omega_n^{\rm Spin}(\mathcal L BG)\to{\mathbb Z}_2$ on the $n$-dimensional spin bordism group of the free loop space of the classifying space of $G,$ and we give a complete list of all compact, connected Lie groups $G$ for which this holds. Moreover, we apply bordism techniques to prove that mod-$8$ Floer gradings exist for moduli spaces of $G_2$-instantons for all principal SU(2)-bundles. We also prove that there are canonical orientations for all principal U$(m)$-bundles $P\to X$ over compact spin $8$-manifolds satisfying $c_2(P)-c_1(P)^2=0.$ The proof is based on an interesting relationship to principal $E_8$-bundles. These canonical orientations play an important role in many conjectures about Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on Calabi-Yau $4$-folds, and resolve an apparent paradox in these conjectures.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a $d$-regular graph and let $F\subseteq\{0, 1, 2, \ldots, d\}$ be a list of forbidden out-degrees. Akbari, Dalirrooyfard, Ehsani, Ozeki, and Sherkati conjectured that if $|F|<\tfrac{1}{2}d$, then $G$ should admit an $F$-avoiding orientation, i.e., an orientation where no out-degrees are in the forbidden list $F$. The conjecture is known for $d\leq 4$ due to work of Ma and Lu, and here we extend this to $d\leq 6$. The conjecture has also been studied in a generalized version, where $d, F$ are changed from constant values to functions $d(v), F(v)$ that vary over all $v\in V(G)$. We provide support for this generalized version by verifying it for some new cases, including when $G$ is 2-degenerate and when every $F(v)$ has some specific structure.

Signature, slicing foams, and crossing changes of Klein graphs

Abstract:A totally oriented Klein graph is a trivalent spatial graph in the 3-sphere with a 3-coloring of its edges and an orientation on each bicolored link. A totally oriented Klein foam is a 3-colored 2-complex in the 4-ball whose boundary is a Klein foam and whose bicolored surfaces are oriented. We extend Gille-Robert's signature for 3-Hamiltonian Klein graphs to all totally oriented Klein graphs and develop an analogy of Murasugi's bounds relating the signature, slice genus and unknotting number of knots. In particular, we show that the signature of a totally oriented Klein graph produces a lower bound on the negative orbifold Euler characteristic of certain totally oriented Klein foams bounded by $\Gamma$. When $\Gamma$ is abstractly planar, these negative Euler characteristics, in turn, produce a lower bound on a certain natural unknotting number for $\Gamma$. Mutatis mutandi, we produce lower bounds on the corresponding Gordian distance between two totally oriented Klein graphs that can be related by a sequence of crossing changes. We also give examples of theta-curves for which our lower bounds on unknotting number improve on previously known bounds.

In this paper we make some progress to show, that for origamis in the stratum $\mathcal{H}(2)$ the index of the Kontsevich-Zorich monodromy in $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ is either 1 or 3.

Abstract:Let $n\le 5$ be an integer, and let $\Gamma$ be a finite group. We prove that if $\rho , \rho': \Gamma \to O(n)$ are two representations that are conjugate by an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism, then they are conjugate by an element of $SO(n)$. In the process, we prove that if $G \subset O(4)$ is a finite group, then exactly one of the following is true: the elements of $G$ have a common invariant $1$-dimensional subspace in $\mathbb{R}^4$; some element of $G$ has no invariant $1$-dimensional subspace; or $G$ is conjugate to a specific group $K \subset O(4)$ of order $16$.

Partial Graph Orientations and the Tutte Polynomial

Abstract:Gessel and Sagan investigated the Tutte polynomial, $T(x,y)$ using depth first search, and applied their techniques to show that the number of acyclic partial orientations of a graph is $2^gT(3,1/2)$. We provide a short deletion-contraction proof of this result and demonstrate that dually, the number of strongly connected partial orientations is $2^{n-1}T(1/2,3)$. We then prove that the number of partial orientations modulo cycle reversals is $2^gT(3,1)$ and the number of partial orientations modulo cut reversals is $2^{n-1}T(1,3)$. To prove these results, we introduce cut and cycle minimal partial orientations which provide distinguished representatives for partial orientations modulo cut and cycle reversals. These extend classes of total orientations introduced by Gioan, and Greene and Zaslavksy, and we highlight a close connection with graphic and cographic Lawrence ideals. We conclude with edge chromatic generalizations of the quantities presented, which allow for a new interpretation of the reliability polynomial for all probabilities, $p$ with $0 < p <1/2$.
