Abstract:We give a higher-algebraic interpretation of complex orientations of ring spectra as "$\mathbb{E}_2$ strictifications" of the identity element. We show that higher strictifications do not exist for most ring spectra of interest in chromatic homotopy theory.

Abstract:We show that Lubin-Tate spectra at the prime $2$ are Real oriented and Real Landweber exact. The proof is by application of the Goerss-Hopkins-Miller theorem to algebras with involution. For each height $n$, we compute the entire homotopy fixed point spectral sequence for $E_n$ with its $C_2$-action given by the formal inverse. We study, as the height varies, the Hurewicz images of the stable homotopy groups of spheres in the homotopy of these $C_2$-fixed points.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of hyperbolic orientation of a motivic ring spectrum, which generalises the various existing notions of orientation (by the groups GL, SLc, SL, Sp). We show that hyperbolic orientations of eta-periodic ring spectra correspond to theories of Pontryagin classes, much in the same way that GL-orientations of arbitrary ring spectra correspond to theories of Chern classes. We prove that eta-periodic hyperbolically oriented cohomology theories do not admit further characteristic classes for vector bundles, by computing the cohomology of the etale classifying space BGLn. Finally we construct the universal hyperbolically oriented eta-periodic commutative motivic ring spectrum, an analog of Voevodsky's cobordism spectrum MGL.

Abstract:We construct a commutative orthogonal $C_2$-ring spectrum, $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$, along with a $C_2$-$E_{\infty}$-orientation $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$ of Atiyah's Real K-theory. Further, we define $E_{\infty}$-maps $\mathrm{MSpin} \to (\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}})^{C_2}$ and $\mathrm{MU}_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$, which are used to recover the three well-known orientations of topological $\mathrm{K}$-theory, $\mathrm{MSpin}^c \to \mathrm{KU}$, $\mathrm{MSpin} \to \mathrm{KO}$, and $\mathrm{MU}_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$, from the map $\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}} \to \mathrm{KU}_{\mathbb{R}}$. We also show that the integrality of the $\hat{A}$-genus on spin manifolds provides an obstruction for the fixed points $(\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}})^{C_2}$ to be equivalent to $\mathrm{MSpin}$, using the Mackey functor structure of $\underline{\pi}_*\mathrm{MSpin}^c_{\mathbb{R}}$. In particular, the usual map $\mathrm{MSpin} \to \mathrm{MSpin}^c$ does not arise as the inclusion of fixed points for any $C_2$-$E_{\infty}$-ring spectrum.

The universal property of bordism of commuting involutions

Abstract:We propose a formalism to capture the structure of the equivariant bordism rings of smooth manifolds with commuting involutions. We introduce the concept of an oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra, an algebraic structure featuring representation graded rings for all elementary abelian 2-groups, connected by restriction homomorphisms, a pre-Euler class, and an inverse Thom class; this data is subject to one exactness property. Besides equivariant bordism, oriented global ring spectra also give rise to oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras, so examples abound. Inverting the inverse Thom classes yields a global 2-torsion group law. In this sense, our oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebras are delocalized generalizations of global 2-torsion group laws. Our main result shows that equivariant bordism for elementary abelian 2-groups is an initial oriented el$_2^{RO}$-algebra. Several other interesting equivariant homology theories can also be characterized, on elementary abelian 2-groups, by similar universal properties. We prove that stable equivariant bordism is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an invertible orientation; that Bredon homology with constant mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an additive orientation; and that Borel equivariant homology with mod 2 coefficients is an initial el$_2^{RO}$-algebra with an orientation that is both additive and invertible.

Abstract:The character variety, which parametrizes reductive representations of finitely generated groups in $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$, has many compactifications. We construct a continuous surjection from the real spectrum compactification to the oriented Gromov--Hausdorff compactification of the character variety. For this purpose, we assign an orientation to the real trees appearing in the boundary of the real spectrum compactification using that the usual orientation on the circle is described by a semi-algebraic equation. Moreover, we show that the orientation on the real trees which appear in the boundary of both compactifications are well understood by the study of sequences within the character variety that converge toward the points in the boundary.

The dual complex of a $G$-variety

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of $G$-varieties, the dual complex, which roughly measures how divisors in the complement of the free locus intersect. We show that the top homology group of this complex is an equivariant birational invariant of $G$-varieties. As an application, we demonstrate the non-linearizability of certain large abelian group actions on smooth hypersurfaces in projective space of any dimension and degree at least $3$.

Abstract:We show that Iacob-Iyengar's answer to a question of Avromov-Foxby extends from Noetherian to coherent rings. In particular, a coherent ring R is regular if and only if the injective (resp. projective) dimension of each complex X of R-modules agrees with its graded-injective (resp. graded-projective) dimension. The same is shown for the analogous dimensions based on FP-injective R-modules, and on flat R-modules.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected and simply-connected semisimple group over $\mathbf{C}$, let $G_c$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G(\mathbf{C})$, and let $T$ be a maximal torus. The derived geometric Satake equivalence of Bezrukavnikov-Finkelberg localizes to an equivalence between a full subcategory of $\mathrm{Loc}_{G_c}(\Omega G_c; \mathbf{C})$ and $\mathrm{QCoh}(\check{\mathfrak{g}}^{\mathrm{reg}}[2]/\check{G})$, which can be thought of as a version of the geometric Satake equivalence "over the regular locus". In this article, we study the story when $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; \mathbf{C})$ is replaced by the $\infty$-category of $T$-equivariant local systems of $A$-modules over $\mathrm{Gr}_G(\mathbf{C})$, where $A$ is a complex-oriented even-periodic $\mathbf{E}_\infty$-ring equipped with an oriented group scheme $\mathbf{G}$. We show that upon rationalization, $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; A)$, which was studied variously by Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg and Yun-Zhu when $A = \mathbf{C}[\beta^{\pm 1}]$, can be described in terms of the spectral geometry of various Langlands-dual stacks associated to $A$ and $\mathbf{G}$. For example, this implies that if $A$ is an elliptic cohomology theory with elliptic curve $E$, then $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; A) \otimes \mathbf{Q}$ can be described via the moduli stack of $\check{B}$-bundles of degree $0$ on $E^\vee$.

Abstract:We categorify the inclusion–exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In characteristic zero this conjecture was previously established by Aumonier via topological methods.

Formal groups over non-commutative rings

Abstract:We develop an extension of the usual theory of formal group laws where the base ring is not required to be commutative and where the formal variables need neither be central nor have to commute with each other. We show that this is the natural kind of formal group law for the needs of algebraic topology in the sense that a (possibly non-commutative) complex oriented ring spectrum is canonically equipped with just such a formal group law. The universal formal group law is carried by the Baker-Richter spectrum M{\xi} which plays a role analogous to MU in this non-commutative context. As suggested by previous work of Morava the Hopf algebra B of "formal diffeomorphisms of the non-commutative line" of Brouder, Frabetti and Krattenthaler is central to the theory developed here. In particular, we verify Morava's conjecture that there is a representation of the Drinfeld quantum-double D(B) through cohomology operations in M{\xi}.

Rigid Dualizing Complexes over Commutative Rings and their Functorial Properties

Abstract:In this paper we treat Grothendieck Duality for noetherian rings via rigid dualizing complexes. In particular, we prove that every ring, essentially finite type over a regular base ring, has a unique rigid dualizing complex. The rigid dualizing complexes have strong functorial properties, allowing us to construct the twisted induction pseudofunctor, which is our ring-theoretic version of the twisted inverse pseudofunctor $f^{!}$. This is the first article of a bigger project, whose final goal is establishing Grothendieck Duality, including global duality for proper maps, for Deligne-Mumford stacks.

Braiding on complex oriented Soergel bimodules

Abstract:In this note, we study U(n) Soergel bimodules in the context of stable homotopy theory. We define the $(\infty, 1)$-category $\mathrm{SBim}_E(n)$ of $E$-valued U(n) Soergel bimodules, where $E$ is a connective $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring spectrum, and assemble them into a monoidal locally additive $(\infty, 2)$-category $\mathrm{SBim}_E$. When $E$ has a complex orientation, we then construct a braiding, i.e. an $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra structure, on the universal locally stable $(\infty, 2)$-category $\mathrm{K}^b_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathrm{SBim}_E)$ associated to $\mathrm{SBim}_E$. Along the way, we also prove spectral analogs of standard splittings of Soergel bimodules. This is a topological generalization of the type $A$ Soergel bimodule theory developed in a previous paper.

Formal lifting of dualizing complexes and consequences

Abstract:We show that for a Noetherian ring $A$ that is $I$-adically complete for an ideal $I$, if $A/I$ admits a dualizing complex, so does $A$. This gives an alternative proof of the fact that a Noetherian complete local ring admits a dualizing complex. We discuss several consequences of this result. We also consider a generalization of the notion of dualizing complexes to infinite-dimensional rings and prove the results in this generality. In addition, we give an alternative proof of the fact that every excellent Henselian local ring admits a dualizing complex, using ultrapower.

Complexes of stable $\infty$-categories

Abstract:We study complexes of stable $\infty$-categories, referred to as categorical complexes. As we demonstrate, examples of such complexes arise in a variety of subjects including representation theory, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, and differential topology. One of the key techniques we introduce is a totalization construction for categorical cubes which is particularly well-behaved in the presence of Beck-Chevalley conditions. As a direct application we establish a categorical Koszul duality result which generalizes previously known derived Morita equivalences among higher Auslander algebras and puts them into a conceptual context. We explain how spherical categorical complexes can be interpreted as higher-dimensional perverse schobers, and introduce Calabi-Yau structures on categorical complexes to capture noncommutative orientation data. A variant of homological mirror symmetry for categorical complexes is proposed and verified for $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^2$.

Equivariant orientation of vector bundles over disconnected base spaces

Abstract:In this paper, we view the equivariant orientation theory of equivariant vector bundles from the lenses of equivariant Picard spectra. This viewpoint allows us to identify, for a finite group $\mathrm{G}$, a precise condition under which an $\mathrm{R}$-orientation of a $\mathrm{G}$-equivariant vector bundle is encoded by a Thom class. Consequently, we are able to construct a generalization of the first Stiefel$-$Whitney class of a "homogeneous" $\mathrm{G}$-equivariant bundle with respect to an $\mathbb{E}_\infty^{\mathrm{G}}$-ring spectrum $\mathrm{R}$. As an application, we show that the $2$-fold direct sum of any homogeneous bundle is $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathcal{A}}_{\mathrm{G}}$-orientable, where $\underline{\mathcal{A}}_{\mathrm{G}}$ is the Burnside Mackey functor. We notice that $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathcal{A}}_{\mathrm{G}}$-orientability is equivalent to $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$-orientability when the order of $\mathrm{G}$ is odd. When the order of $\mathrm{G}$ is even, we show that a $\mathrm{G}$-equivariant analog of the tautological line bundle over $\mathbb{RP}^\infty$ is $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathbb{Z}}$-orientable but not $\mathrm{H}\underline{\mathcal{A}}_{\mathrm{G}}$-orientable.

Abstract:In the derived category of a commutative noetherian ring, we explicitly construct a silting object associated with each sp-filtration of the Zariski spectrum satisfying the "slice" condition. Our new construction is based on local cohomology and it allows us to study when the silting object is tilting. For a ring admitting a dualizing complex, this occurs precisely when the sp-filtration arises from a codimension function on the spectrum. In the absence of a dualizing complex, the situation is more delicate and the tilting property is closely related to the condition that the ring is a homomorphic image of a Cohen-Macaulay ring. We also provide dual versions of our results in the cosilting case.

Abstract:In a previous paper, one of us interpreted mod 2 Dyer-Lashof operations as explicit A-module extensions between Brown-Gitler modules, and showed these A-modules can be topologically realized by finite spectra occurring as fibers of maps between 2-local dual Brown-Gitler spectra. Starting from these constructions, in this paper, we show that infinite families of these finite spectra are of chromatic type 2, with mod 2 cohomology that is free over A(1). Applications include classifying the dual Brown-Gitler spectra after localization with respect to K-theory.
