Abstract:The target of this article is to discuss the concept of \textit{commuting probability} of finite groups which, in short, is a probabilistic measure of how abelian our group is. We shall compute the value of commuting probability for many special classes of non-abelian groups and also establish some local and global bounds. We will conclude with a few topics for further reading.

Abstract:This paper is an attempt to find out which properties of a finite group G can be expressed in terms of commutators of elements of coprime orders. A criterion of solubility of G in terms of such commutators is obtained. We also conjecture that every element of a nonabelian simple group is a commutator of elements of coprime orders and we confirm this conjecture for the alternating groups.

Abstract:For every number field and every Cartan Killing type, there is an associated split simple algebraic group. We examine whether the corresponding arithmetic subgroups are profinitely solitary so that the commensurability class of the profinite completion determines the commensurability class of the group among finitely generated residually finite groups. Assuming Grothendieck rigidity, we essentially solve the problem by Galois cohomological means.

Abstract:In this short note we show that the path-connected component of the identity of the derived subgroup of a compact Lie group consists just of commutators. We also discuss an application of our main result to the homotopy type of the classifying space for commutativity for a compact Lie group whose path-connected component of the identity is abelian.

Commuting matrices via commuting endomorphisms

Abstract:Evidences have suggested that counting representations are sometimes tractable even when the corresponding classification problem is almost impossible, or "wild" in a precise sense. Such counting problems are directly related to matrix counting problems, many of which are under active research. Using a general framework we formulate for such counting problems, we reduce some counting problems about commuting matries to problems about endomorphisms on all finite abelian $p$-groups. As an application, we count finite modules on some first examples of nonreduced curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We also relate some classical and hard problems regarding commuting triples of matrices to a conjecture of Onn on counting conjugacy classes of the automorphism group of an arbitrary finite abelian $p$-group.

Functions on the commuting stack via Langlands duality

Abstract:We calculate the dg algebra of global functions on commuting stacks of complex reductive groups using tools from Betti Geometric Langlands. In particular, we prove that the ring of invariant functions on the commuting scheme is reduced. Our main technical results include: a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the cocenter of the affine Hecke category; and the calculation of endomorphisms of a Whittaker sheaf in a diagram organizing parabolic induction of character sheaves.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a group. If the set [math] forms a subgroup of [math], then G is called [math]-group. Recently, it has been proven that the minimum coclass of a non-[math][math]-group is equal to [math]. In this paper, we deal with finite [math]-groups of coclass [math]. We prove that a finite [math]-group [math] of order [math], [math], of coclass [math] for an odd prime [math] is an [math]-group except when the nilpotency class of the second term of upper central series [math], [math], is equal to [math]. In particular, we show that in this case, center of [math], [math], and commutator subgroup [math], [math], are of order [math] and [math], respectively, and [math] is a group of order [math]. Also, we give some sufficient conditions on a finite 2-group [math] of coclass [math] implying that [math] is an [math]-group.

Abstract:Let $F$ be any field. We give a short and elementary proof that any finite subgroup $G$ of $PGL(2,F)$ occurs as a Galois group over the function field $F(x)$. We also develop a theory of descent to subfields of $F$. This enables us to realize the automorphism groups of finite subgroups of $PGL(2,F)$ as Galois groups.

Abstract:The Galois/monodromy group of a family of geometric problems or equations is a subtle invariant that encodes the structure of the solutions. We give numerical methods to compute the Galois group and study it when it is not the full symmetric group. One algorithm computes generators, while the other studies its structure as a permutation group. We illustrate these algorithms with examples using a Macaulay2 package we are developing that relies upon Bertini to perform monodromy computations.

Abstract:We extend the usual notion of fully commutative elements from the Coxeter groups to the complex reflection groups. Then we decompose the sets of fully commutative elements into natural subsets according to their combinatorial properties, and investigate the structure of these decompositions. As a consequence, we enumerate and describe the form of these elements in the complex reflection groups.

Abstract:We realize Frobenius conjugacy classes in Galois groups of certain $q$-polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ using specific degree 1 ideals. We combine this with methods from elementary linear algebra and group theory to realize transvections in some linear Galois groups. This enables the Galois group to be identified as a known classical group in several reasonably general cases.

Abstract:We study the irreducibility and Galois group of random polynomials over function fields. We prove that a random polynomial $f=y^n+\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}a_i(x)y^i\in\mathbb F_q[x][y]$ with i.i.d coefficients $a_i$ taking values in the set $\{a(x)\in\mathbb{F}_q[x]: \mathrm{deg}\, a\leq d\}$ with uniform probability, is irreducible with probability tending to $1-\frac{1}{q^d}$ as $n\to\infty$, where $d$ and $q$ are fixed. We also prove that with the same probability, the Galois group of this random polynomial contains the alternating group $A_n$. Moreover, we prove that if we assume a version of the polynomial Chowla conjecture over $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$, then the Galois group of this polynomial is actually equal to the symmetric group $S_n$ with probability tending to $1-\frac{1}{q^d}$. We also study the other possible Galois groups occurring with positive limit probability. Finally, we study the same problems with $n$ fixed and $d\to\infty$.

Kummer theory for function fields

Abstract:We develop Kummer theory for algebraic function fields in finitely many transcendental variables. We consider any finitely generated Kummer extension (possibly, over a cyclotomic extension) of an algebraic function field, and describe the structure of its Galois group. Our results show in a precise sense how the questions of computing the degrees of these extensions and of computing the group structures of their Galois groups reduce to the corresponding questions for the Kummer extensions of their constant fields.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group and $x, y \in G$ are involutions, then $|x^G \cap C_G(y)| \rightarrow \infty$ as $|G| \rightarrow \infty$. This extends results of Guralnick-Robinson and Skresanov. We also prove a related result about $C_{G}(t)/O(C_G(t))$ that does not require the classification of finite simple groups.

Abstract:In parallel to the classical theory of central extensions of groups, we develop a version for extensions that preserve commutativity. It is shown that the Bogomolov multiplier is a universal object parametrising such extensions of a given group. Maximal and minimal extensions are inspected, and a connection with commuting probability is explored. Such considerations produce bounds for the exponent and rank of the Bogomolov multiplier.

Abstract:Over a global field (number field or function field of a curve over a finite field), theorems for the Galois cohomology of algebraic groups have long been known. For $F$ the function field of a curve over the formal series field $\mathbb{C}((t))$, under an additional assumption on the curve, we establish an explicit description of the localization map in Galois cohomology.
