Abstract:Three galaxy redshifts surveys and their analyses are discussed. (i) The recently completed Optical Redshift Survey (ORS) includes galaxies larger than 1.9 arcmin and/or brighter than $14.5^m$. It provides redshifts for $\sim 8300 $ galaxies at Galactic latitude $|b|>20^o$. A new analysis of the survey explores the existence and extent of the Supergalactic Plane (SGP). Its orientation is found to be in good agreement with the standard SGP coordinates, and suggests that the SGP is at least as large as the survey (16000 km/sec in diameter). (ii) The Dwingeloo Obscured Galaxy Survey is aimed at finding galaxies hidden behind the Milky-Way using a blind search in 21 cm. The discovery of Dwingeloo1 illustrates that the survey will allow us to systematically survey the region $30^o < l < 200^o$ out to 4000 km/sec. (iii) The Anglo-Australian 2-degree-Field (2dF) survey will yield 250,000 redshifts for APM-selected galaxies brighter than $19.5^m$ to map the large scale structure on scales larger than $\sim 30 \Mpc$. To study morphological segregation and biasing the spectra will be classified using Artificial Neural Networks.

Redshift clustering in the Hubble Deep Field

Abstract:We present initial results from a redshift survey carried out with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the 10~m W. M. Keck Telescope in the Hubble Deep Field. In the redshift distribution of the 140 extragalactic objects in this sample we find 6 strong peaks, with velocity dispersions of ${\sim}400${\kms}. The areal density of objects within a particular peak, while it may be non-uniform, does not show evidence for strong central concentration. These peaks have characteristics (velocity dispersions, density enhancements, spacing, and spatial extent) similar to those seen in a comparable redshift survey in a different high galactic latitude field (Cohen et al 1996), confirming that the structures are generic. They are probably the high redshift counterparts of huge galaxy structures (``walls'') observed locally.

Abstract:The number density and correlation function of galaxies are two key quantities to characterize the distribution of the observed galaxy population. High-z spectroscopic surveys, which usually involve complex target selection and are incomplete in redshift sampling, present both opportunities and challenges to measure these quantities reliably in the high-z Universe. Using realistic mock catalogs, we show that target selection and redshift incompleteness can lead to significantly biased results, especially due to the flux-limit selection criteria. We develop a new method to correct the flux-limit effect, using information provided by the parent photometric data from which the spectroscopic sample is constructed. Our tests using realistic mock samples show that the method is able to reproduce the true stellar mass function and correlation function reliably. Mock catalogs are constructed for the existing zCOSMOS and VIPERS surveys, as well as for the forthcoming Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) galaxy evolution survey. The same set of mock samples are used to quantify the total variance expected for different sample sizes. We find that the total variance decreases very slowly when the survey area reaches about 4 deg 2 for the abundance and about 8 deg 2 for the clustering, indicating that the cosmic variance is no longer the dominant source of error for PFS-like surveys. We also quantify the improvements expected in the PFS-like galaxy survey relative to zCOSMOS and VIPERS surveys.

Near-Infrared and Optical Luminosity Functions from the 6dF Galaxy Survey

Abstract:Luminosity functions and their integrated luminosity densities are presented for the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). This ongoing survey ultimately aims to measure around 150,000 redshifts and 15,000 peculiar velocities over almost the entire southern sky at |b|>10 deg. The main target samples are taken from the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog and the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey catalogue, and comprise 138,226 galaxies complete to (K, H, J, rF, bJ) = (12.75, 13.00, 13.75, 15.60, 16.75). These samples are comparable in size to the optically-selected Sloan Digital Sky Survey and 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey samples, and improve on recent near-infrared-selected redshift surveys by more than an order of magnitude in both number and sky coverage. The partial samples used in this paper contain a little over half of the total sample in each band and are ~90 percent complete. Luminosity distributions are derived using the 1/Vmax, STY and SWML estimators, and probe 1 to 2 absolute magnitudes fainter in the near-infrared than previous surveys. The effects of magnitude errors, redshift incompleteness and peculiar velocities have been taken into account and corrected throughout. Generally, the 6dFGS luminosity functions are in excellent agreement with those of similarly-sized surveys. Our data are of sufficient quality to demonstrate that a Schechter function is not an ideal fit to the true luminosity distribution, due to its inability to simultaneously match the faint end slope and rapid bright end decline. Integrated luminosity densities from the 6dFGS are consistent with an old stellar population and moderately declining star formation rate.

Mapping the Cosmic Web with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

Abstract:Wide-angle, moderately deep redshift surveys such as that conducted as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) allow study of the relationship between the structural elements of the large-scale distribution of galaxies -- including groups, cluster, superclusters, and voids -- and the dependence of galaxy formation and evolution on these enviroments. We present a progress report on mapping efforts with the SDSS and discuss recently constructed catalogs of clusters, voids, and void galaxies, and evidence for a 420Mpc/h supercluster or ``Great Wall.'' Analysis of multi-band photometry and moderate-resolution spectroscopy from the SDSS reveals environmental dependence of the star formation history of galaxies that extends over more than a factor of 100 in density, from clusters all the way to the deep interiors of voids. On average, galaxies in the rarified environments of voids exhibit bluer colors, higher specific star formation rates, lower dust content, and more disk-like morphology than objects in denser regions. This trend persists in comparisons of samples in low vs. high-density regions with similar luminosity and morphology, thus this dependence is not simply an extension of the morphology-density relation. Large-scale modulation of the halo mass function and the temperature of the intergalactic medium might explain this dependence of galaxy evolution on the large-scale environment.

Abstract:AbstractWe present a brief update on the ACS Virgo and Fornax Cluster Surveys —Hubble Space Telescopeprograms to obtainACSimaging for 143 early-type galaxies in the two galaxy clusters nearest to the Milky Way. We summarize a selection of science highlights from the surveys as including new results on the central structure of early-type galaxies, the apparent continuity of photometric and structural parameters between dwarf and giant galaxies, and the properties of globular clusters, diffuse star clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies.

Abstract:Photometric redshifts have been determined for the galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. The resulting redshift distribution shows two peaks: one at z~0.6 and one at z~2.2. Luminosity functions derived from the redshifts show strong luminosity evolution as a function of redshift. This evolution is consistent with the Babul & Rees (1992) scenario wherein massive galaxies form stars at high redshift while star formation in dwarf galaxies is delayed until after z=1.

Abstract:We present reduced data and data products from the 3D-HST survey, a 248-orbit HST Treasury program. The survey obtained WFC3 G141 grism spectroscopy in four of the five CANDELS fields: AEGIS, COSMOS, GOODS-S, and UDS, along with WFC3 $H_{140}$ imaging, parallel ACS G800L spectroscopy, and parallel $I_{814}$ imaging. In a previous paper (Skelton et al. 2014) we presented photometric catalogs in these four fields and in GOODS-N, the fifth CANDELS field. Here we describe and present the WFC3 G141 spectroscopic data, again augmented with data from GO-1600 in GOODS-N. The data analysis is complicated by the fact that no slits are used: all objects in the WFC3 field are dispersed, and many spectra overlap. We developed software to automatically and optimally extract interlaced 2D and 1D spectra for all objects in the Skelton et al. (2014) photometric catalogs. The 2D spectra and the multi-band photometry were fit simultaneously to determine redshifts and emission line strengths, taking the morphology of the galaxies explicitly into account. The resulting catalog has 98,663 measured redshifts and line strengths down to $JH_{IR}\leq 26$ and 22,548 with $JH_{IR}\leq 24$, where we comfortably detect continuum emission. Of this sample 5,459 galaxies are at $z>1.5$ and 9,621 are at $0.7<z<1.5$, where H$\alpha$ falls in the G141 wavelength coverage. Based on comparisons with ground-based spectroscopic redshifts, and on analyses of paired galaxies and repeat observations, the typical redshift error for $JH_{IR}\leq 24$ galaxies in our catalog is $\sigma_z \approx 0.003 \times (1+z)$, i.e., one native WFC3 pixel. The $3\sigma$ limit for emission line fluxes of point sources is $1.5\times10^{-17}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. We show various representations of the full dataset, as well as individual examples that highlight the range of spectra that we find in the survey.

The Galaxy Luminosity Function at z~1 in the HUDF: Probing the Dwarf Population

Abstract:We present a catalog of spectro-photometric redshifts for 1308 galaxies from the GRism ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. These low-resolution spectra between 6000 A and 9500 A are supplemented with U, J, H, and Ks from various facilities, resulting in redshifts computed with ~40 spectral bins per galaxy. For 81 galaxies between 0.5<z<1.5 with spectroscopic redshifts, the standard deviation in the fractional error in (1+z) is 0.046. With this catalog, we compute the B-band luminosity function in this redshift range from 72 galaxies. Owing to the depth of the GRAPES survey, we are able to accurately constrain the faint-end slope by going to M_B~-18 mag at 0.8<z<1.2, nearly two magnitudes fainter than previous studies. The faint-end slope is alpha=-1.32+-0.07. When compared to numerous published values at various redshifts, we find strong evidence for a steepening of the faint-end slope with redshift which is expected in the hierarchical formation scenario of galaxies.

Abstract:We present a statistical study of the redshift evolution of the cluster galaxy population over a wide redshift range from 0.1 to 1.1, using similar to 1900 optically-selected CAMIRA clusters from similar to 232 deg(2) of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Wide S16A data. Our stacking technique with a statistical background subtraction reveals color-magnitude diagrams of red-sequence and blue cluster galaxies down to faint magnitudes of m(z) similar to 24. We find that the linear relation of red-sequence galaxies in the color-magnitude diagram extends down to the faintest magnitudes we explore with a small intrinsic scatter sigma(int)(g - r) < 0.1. The scatter does not evolve significantly with redshift. The stacked color-magnitude diagrams are used to define red and blue galaxies in clusters in order to study their radial number density profiles without resorting to photometric redshifts of individual galaxies. We find that red galaxies are significantly more concentrated toward cluster centers and blue galaxies dominate the outskirts of clusters. We explore the fraction of red galaxies in clusters as a function of redshift, and find that the red fraction decreases with increasing distances from cluster centers. The red fraction exhibits a moderate decrease with increasing redshift. The radial number density profiles of cluster member galaxies are also used to infer the location of the steepest slope in the three-dimensional galaxy density profiles. For a fixed threshold in richness, we find little redshift evolution in this location.

Abstract:We present the spectrophotometric properties of a sample of 141 emission-line galaxies at redshifts in the range $0.2<z<1.0$ with a peak around $z\in[0.2,0.4]$. The analysis is based on medium resolution ($R\_{\mathrm{s}}=500-600$), optical spectra obtained at VLT and Keck. The targets are mostly {} "Canada-France Redshift Survey" emission-line galaxies, with the addition of field galaxies randomly selected behind lensing clusters. We complement this sample with galaxy spectra from the {} "Gemini Deep Deep Survey" public data release. We have computed absolute magnitudes of the galaxies and measured the line fluxes and equivalent widths of the main emission/absorption lines. The last two have been measured after careful subtraction of the fitted stellar continuum using the \texttt{platefit} software originally developed for the SDSS and adapted to our data. We present a careful comparison of this software with the results of manual measurements. The pipeline has also been tested on lower resolution spectra, typical of the {} "VIMOS/VLT Deep Survey" ($R\_{\mathrm{s}}=250$), by resampling our medium resolution spectra. We show that we can successfully deblend the most important strong emission lines. These data are primarily used to perform a spectral classification of the galaxies in order to distinguish star-forming galaxies from AGNs. Among the initial sample of 141 emission-line galaxies, we find 7 Seyfert 2 (narrow-line AGN), 115 star-forming galaxies and 16 {} "candidate" star-forming galaxies. Scientific analysis of these data, in terms of chemical abundances, stellar populations, etc, will be presented in subsequent papers of this serie.

Abstract:Galaxy redshift surveys are outstanding tools for observational cosmology. Mapping the universe as outlined by galaxies leads to fundamental measurements which refine our knowledge of its structure and evolution. Redshift acquisition has undergone tremendous progress thanks to advances in technology, and redshift surveys appear nowadays as routine. Even though they may look simple at face-value, the strategy of a survey and the galaxy-selection criteria have crucial impacts on the interpretation of results. In this lecture, I concentrate on the galaxy luminosity function and its evolution. In particular I consider the luminosity function derived from optically magnitude-selected field galaxy redshift surveys. The aim is to describe the approach to designing state-of-the-art of galaxy surveys and their impact on measurements on luminosity functions. I start by discussing survey strategies, (Section 2). I continue by describing the data required (Section 3), and then review the different estimators to measure luminosity funtions (Section 4). I discuss the luminosity function evolution (Section 5) and I follow by summarizing the status of luminosity measurements (Section 6).

Abstract:Photometric redshifts have been calculated for the Hubble Deep Fields. The redshift distributions of the fields differ; there is a large excess of galaxies in the HDF-North in the redshift range 0.4<z<1.2. The difference is consistent with the presence of a weak cluster in the HDFN and is only slightly larger than the cosmic variance in other fields of similar depths and with models of large scale structure.

Abstract:We show that soft supersymmetry breaking terms involving the heavy sneutrinos can lead to sneutrino-antisneutrino mixing and to new sources of CP violation, which are present even if a single generation is considered. These terms are naturally present in supersymmetric versions of leptogenesis scenarios, and they induce indirect CP violation in the decays of the heavy sneutrinos, eventually generating a baryon asymmetry. This new contribution can be comparable to or even dominate over the asymmetry produced in traditional leptogenesis scenarios.

Highlights of Astronomy

Abstract:This IAU Joint Discussion proposes to address the subject of redshift surveys in the 21st century. This paper, however, deals with two major new redshift surveys that those involved sincerely hope will be completed in the 20th century. Nonetheless, these surveys are relevant to the topic of the meeting, as they clearly foreshadow the scope and style of redshift surveys, if not in the coming millennium, at least in the coming decade. The surveys are being carried out with the new Two Degree Field (2dF) facility on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), a 400-fibre multi-object spectrograph with the capability, as described in Section 2, to increase the size of redshift surveys by an order of magnitude over current best efforts. The main scientific goals, survey strategy and some preliminary results from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey are outlined in Section 3, while Section 4 similarly describes the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey. Abstract:Although early observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) pointed to a sharp dichotomy among early-type galaxies in terms of the logarithmic slope gamma' of their central surface brightness profiles, several studies in the past few years have called this finding into question. In particular, recent imaging surveys of 143 early-type galaxies belonging to the Virgo and Fornax Clusters using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on board HST have not found a dichotomy in gamma', but instead a systematic progression from central luminosity deficit to excess relative to the inward extrapolation of the best-fitting global Sersic model. Given that earlier studies also found that the dichotomy persisted when analyzing the deprojected density profile slopes, we investigate the distribution of the three-dimensional luminosity density profiles of the ACS Virgo and Fornax Cluster Survey galaxies. Having fitted the surface brightness profiles with modified Sersic models, we then deproject the galaxies using an Abel integral and measure the inner slopes gamma(3D) of the resulting luminosity density profiles at various fractions of the effective radius R-e. We find no evidence of a dichotomy, but rather, a continuous variation in the central luminosity profiles as a function of galaxy magnitude. We introduce a parameter, Delta(3D), that measures the central deviation of the deprojected luminosity profiles from the global Sersic fit, showing that this parameter varies smoothly and systematically along the luminosity function.
