Abstract:The Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equations (LAD) may be the most commonly accepted equation describing the motion of a classical charged particle in its electromagnetic field. However, it is well known that they bare several problems. In particular, almost all solutions are dynamically unstable, and therefore, highly questionable. The question remains whether better equations of motion than LAD can be found to describe the dynamics of charges in the electromagnetic fields. In this paper we present an approach to derive such equations of motions, taking as input the Maxwell equations and a particular charge model only, similar to the model suggested by Dirac in his original derivation of LAD in 1938. We present a candidate for new equations of motion for the case of a single charge. Our approach is motivated by the observation that Dirac's derivation relies on an unjustified application of Stokes' theorem and an equally unjustified Taylor expansion of terms in his evolution equations. For this purpose, Dirac's calculation is repeated using an extended charge model that does allow for the application of Stokes' theorem and enables us to find an explicit equation of motion by adapting Parrott's derivation, thus avoiding a Taylor expansion. The result are second order differential delay equations, which describe the radiation reaction force for the charge model at hand. Their informal Taylor expansion in the radius of the charge model used in the paper reveals again the famous triple dot term of LAD but provokes the mentioned dynamical instability by a mechanism we discuss and, as the derived equations of motion are explicit, is unnecessary.

Abstract:We consider the general problem of charged particle motion in a strong electromagnetic field of arbitrary configuration and find a universal behaviour: for sufficiently high field strengths, the radiation losses lead to a general tendency of the charge to move along the direction that locally yields zero lateral acceleration. The relativistic motion along such a direction results in no radiation losses, according to both classical and quantum descriptions of radiation reaction. We show that such a radiation-free direction (RFD) exists at each point of an arbitrary electromagnetic field, while the time-scale of approaching this direction decreases with the increase of field strength. Thus, in the case of a sufficiently strong electromagnetic field, at each point of space, the charges mainly move and form currents along local RFD, while the deviation of their motion from RFD can be calculated in order to account for their incoherent emission. This forms a general description of particle, and therefore plasma, dynamics in strong electromagnetic fields, the latter can be generated by state-of-the-art lasers or in astrophysical environments.

Abstract:A charged particle which is allowed to accelerate must have relativistic behavior because it is coupled to electromagnetic radiation which propagates at the speed of light. We treat the simple steady-state situation of a charged particle moving in a circular orbit with counter-propagating plane waves providing the power which balances the energy radiated away by the accelerating charge. It is emphasized that only an electromagnetic arrangement, such as a Coulomb potential or a constant magnetic field, can provide the relativistic central force for the particle motion.

Abstract:The angular momentum of radiation from an arbitrarily moving relativistic charge is studied. The angular momentum is presented as the sum of the angular momentum relative to the point where the charge is located at a retarded moment of time and the angular momentum relative to an arbitrary stationary center. In particular, the instantaneous center of curvature of the trajectory is considered as such a center. Explicit expressions for the angular distribution of these components of angular momentum fluxes are obtained and studied. It is shown that the angular momentum of the field relative to the position of the charge is determined only by the properties of the electromagnetic radiation field, and the angular momentum relative to an arbitrarily distant point is the vector product of the displacement of this point and the force corresponding to radiation pressure. It is shown that in the ultrarelativistic limit, the canonical angular momentum of the radiation coincides with the angular momentum following from the symmetrized energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field.

Abstract:We consider a bound system of charged particles moving in an external electromagnetic field, including leading relativistic corrections. The difference from the point particle with a magnetic moment comes from the presence of polarizabilities. Due to the lack of separation of the total momentum from the internal degrees of freedom, the notion of polarizability of the bound state immersed in the continuum spectrum of the global motion is nontrivial. We introduce a bound-continuum perturbation theory and obtain a complete formula for the equation of motion for a polarizable bound system, such as atom, ion, or the nucleus. This formula may find applications when high precision is sought and small effects due polarizabilities are important.

Abstract:The properties of radiation created by a classical ultrarelativistic scalar charged particle in a constant homogeneous crossed electromagnetic field are described both analytically and numerically with radiation reaction taken into account in the form of the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The total radiation naturally falls into two parts: the radiation formed at the entrance point of a particle into the crossed field (the synchrotron entrance radiation), and the radiation coming from the late-time asymptotics of a particle motion (the de-excited radiation). The synchrotron entrance radiation resembles, although does not coincide with, the ultrarelativistic limit of the synchrotron radiation: its distribution over energies and angles possesses almost the same properties. The de-excited radiation is soft, not concentrated in the plane of motion of a charged particle, and almost completely circularly polarized. The photon energy delivering the maximum to its spectral angular distribution decreases with increasing the initial energy of a charged particle, while the maximum value of this distribution remains the same at the fixed observation angle. The ultraviolet and infrared asymptotics of the total radiation are also described.

Abstract:The effective equations of motion for a point charged particle taking account of radiation reaction are considered in various space-time dimensions. The divergencies steaming from the pointness of the particle are studied and the effective renormalization procedure is proposed encompassing uniformly the cases of all even dimensions. It is shown that in any dimension the classical electrodynamics is a renormalizable theory if not multiplicatively beyond d=4. For the cases of three and six dimensions the covariant analogs of the Lorentz-Dirac equation are explicitly derived.

Abstract:Newton described in his second law of motion the classical definition of mass (inertia). However, it is impossible to calculate with Newton’s second law of motion the (electromagnetic) mass of a beam of light. Because the speed of light is a universal constant which follows from Albert Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity, it is impossible to accelerate or to slow down a beam of light and for that reason it is impossible to determine the electromagnetic mass of a beam of light (free electromagnetic radiation) by Newton’s second law. To calculate the electromagnetic mass of free or confined electromagnetic radiation, the fundamental concept of the New Theory has been used that the Universe is in a perfect Equilibrium and that any electromagnetic field configuration is in a perfect equilibrium with itself and its surrounding. From this fundamental concept follows a different definition of (confined) electromagnetic mass. Electromagnetic mass (or inertia) has been determined by the relativistic Lorentz transformation of the radiation pressures in all different directions and the disturbance of a uniform motion (or position at rest) of confined electromagnetic radiation results in a relativistic effect which we measure (experience) as electromagnetic mass (inertia). The mass in [kg] of an object will be generally measured by acceleration (or deceleration) of the object according Newton’s second law of motion. Abstract:Previous studies from the astrophysics and laser physics communities have identified an interesting phenomenon wherein ultrarelativistic charged particles experiencing strong radiation reaction tend to move along special directions fixed by the local electromagnetic field. In the relativity literature these are known as the "principal null directions" (PNDs) of the Maxwell field. A particle in this regime has "Aristotelian" dynamics in the sense that its velocity (rather than acceleration) is determined by the local field. We study this Aristotelian equilibrium in detail, starting from the Landau-Lifshitz equation describing charged particle motion including radiation reaction. Using a Frenet-Serret frame adapted to the PNDs, we derive the Lorentz factor describing motion along the local PND, together with drift velocities reflecting slower passage from one PND to another. We derive conditions on the field configuration that are necessary for such an equilibrium to occur. We demonstrate agreement of our analytic formulas with full numerical solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation in the appropriate regime.

Abstract:We derive the force of the electromagnetic radiation on material objects by a direct application of the Lorentz law of classical electro-dynamics. The derivation is straightforward in the case of solid metals and solid dielectrics, where the mass density and the optical constants of the media are assumed to remain unchanged under internal and external pressures, and where material flow and deformation can be ignored. For metallic mirrors, we separate the contribution to the radiation pressure of the electrical charge density from that of the current density of the conduction electrons. In the case of dielectric media, we examine the forces experienced by bound charges and currents, and determine the contribution of each to the radiation pressure. These analyses reveal the existence of a lateral radiation pressure inside the dielectric media, one that is exerted at and around the edges of a finite-diameter light beam. The lateral pressure turns out to be compressive for s-polarized light and expansive for p-polarized light. Along the way, we derive an expression for the momentum density of the light field inside dielectric media, one that has equal contributions from the traditional Minkowski and Abraham forms. This new expression for the momentum density, which contains both electromagnetic and mechanical terms, is used to explain the behavior of light pulses and individual photons upon entering and exiting a dielectric slab. In all the cases considered, the net forces and torques experienced by material bodies are consistent with the relevant conservation laws. Our method of calculating the radiation pressure can be used in conjunction with numerical simulations to yield the distribution of fields and forces in diverse systems of practical interest.

Abstract:In this paper, the electromagnetic radiation from an oscillating particle placed in the vicinity of an object of size comparable to the wavelength is studied. Although this problem may seem academic at first sight, the details of the calculations are presented throughout without any detail left under the carpet. A polyharmonic decomposition of the radiation sources allows the diffraction problem to be fully characterised while satisfying energy conservation. Finally, the source expressions obtained are suitable for use in a numerical code. A 3D illustration using finite elements is provided.

Abstract:It is shown that the correct expressions for momentum and kinetic energy of a particle moving at high speed were already implicit in physics going back to Maxwell. The demonstration begins with a thought experiment of Einstein by which he derived the inertial equivalence of energy, independently of the relativity postulates. A simple modification of the same experiment does the rest.

Abstract:We derive a massive analog of the ALD (Abraham, Lorentz and Dirac) equation, i.e., the equation of motion of a relativistic charged particle with a radiation reaction term induced by emissions of massive fields. We show that the radiation reaction term has a non-analytic behavior as a function of the mass M of the radiation field and both expansions with respect of M and 1/M are generally invalid. Hence the massive ALD equation cannot be written as a local equation with derivative expansions. We especially investigate the radiation reaction in three specific motions, uniform acceleration, a circular motion and a scattering process.

Abstract:We analyze the classical and quantized center-of-mass motion of a polarizable particle interacting with the fluctuations of the electromagnetic (EM) field in the presence of a medium. As a polarizable particle is immersed in a thermal environment, the momentum impulses imparted by the field fluctuations lead to momentum diffusion and drag for the particle's classical center of mass. When considering the quantized center-of-mass motion of the particle, these very fluctuations gain information about its position, leading to decoherence in the position basis. We derive a position localization master equation for the particle's quantized center of mass, and examine its classical center-of-mass momentum diffusion, elucidating correspondences between classical and quantum Brownian motion of polarizable particles near media.

Considerations on electromagnetic radiation in Podolsky electrodynamics within a Lorentz-symmetry violating framework

Abstract:We explore how higher-order derivative terms impact a physical observable within a Lorentz-Symmetry Violating (LSV) framework. We specifically examine Podolsky electrodynamics coupled with the Carroll-Field-Jackiw model (CFJ). Our analysis shows how vacuum and wave propagation are affected by the interaction of LSV parameters with properties of Podolsky electrodynamics. In this scenario, our results indicate that the new electromagnetic vacuum is birefringent, dichroic, and dispersive. We also point out that the higher-derivative term in the presence of the CFJ space-time anisotropy induces an oscillation mechanism between the photon, which acquires a non-vanishing mass, and the massive vector mode carried by the higher derivative. We then investigate the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a moving charged particle interacting with this new medium. Our analysis reveals that the refractive vacuum through which the charged particle travels influences the electromagnetic radiation, leading to a profile similar to the Cherenkov effect.

Scalar QED Model for Polarizable Particles in Thermal Equilibrium or in Hyperbolic Motion in Vacuum

Abstract:We consider a scalar QED model for the frictional force and the momentum fluctuations of a polarizable particle in thermal equilibrium with radiation or in hyperbolic motion in a vacuum. In the former case the loss of particle kinetic energy due to the frictional force is compensated by the increase in kinetic energy associated with the momentum diffusion, resulting in the Planck distribution when it is assumed that the average kinetic energy satisfies the equipartition theorem. For hyperbolic motion in vacuum the frictional force and the momentum diffusion are similarly consistent with a thermal equilibrium at the Davies-Unruh temperature. The quantum fluctuations of the momentum imply that it is only the average acceleration that is constant when the particle is subject to a constant applied force.

Abstract:As first proposed by Gruzinov, a charged particle moving in strong electromagnetic fields can enter an equilibrium state where the power input from the electric field is balanced by radiative losses. When this occurs, the particle moves at nearly light speed along special directions called the principal null directions (PNDs) of the electromagnetic field. This equilibrium is "Aristotelian" in that the particle velocity, rather than acceleration, is determined by the local electromagnetic field. In paper I of this series, we analytically derived the complete formula for the particle velocity at leading order in its deviation from the PND, starting from the fundamental Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation governing charged particle motion, and demonstrated agreement with numerical solutions of the LL equation. We also identified five necessary conditions on the field configuration for the equilibrium to occur. In this paper we study the entry into equilibrium using a similar combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We simplify the necessary conditions and provide strong numerical evidence that they are also sufficient for equilibrium to occur. Based on exact and approximate solutions to the LL equation, we identify key timescales and properties of entry into equilibrium and show quantitative agreement with numerical simulations. Part of this analysis shows analytically that the equilibrium is linearly stable and identifies the presence of oscillations during entry, which may have distinctive radiative signatures. Our results provide a solid foundation for using the Aristotelian approximation when modeling relativistic plasmas with strong electromagnetic fields.
