Abstract:We investigate quantum kinetic theory for a massive fermion system under a rotational field. From the Dirac equation in curved space we derive the complete set of kinetic equations for the spin components of the covariant and equal-time Wigner functions. While the particles are no longer on a mass shell in general case due to the rotation-spin coupling, there are always only two independent components, which can be taken as the number and spin densities. With the help from the off-shell constraint we obtain the closed transport equations for the two independent components in classical limit and at quantum level. The classical rotation-orbital coupling controls the dynamical evolution of the number density, but the quantum rotation-spin coupling explicitly changes the spin density. Abstract:We derive the relativistic quantum kinetic equation for massless fermions with vector and axial vector interaction using the Wigner function formalism. The vector and axial vector currents are self-consistently treated with corresponding constraint equations. The kinetic equations are derived and the condition for equilibrium is discussed up to the first order of $\hbar$. In addition to the vorticity and shear contributions, the divergence of the local particle number density is also found to contribute to the kinetic equations.

Abstract:A neo-classical relativistic mechanics theory is presented where the spin of an electron is a natural part of its space-time path as a point particle. The fourth-order equation of motion corresponds to the same Lagrangian function in proper time as in special relativity except for an additional spin energy term. The total motion can be decomposed into a sum of a local spin motion about a point and a global motion of this point, called the spin center. The global motion is sub-luminal and obeys Newton's second law in proper time, the time for a clock fixed at the spin center, while the total motion occurs at the speed of light c, consistent with the eigenvalues of Dirac's velocity operators having magnitude c. The local spin motion corresponds to Schrödinger's zitterbewegung and is a perpetual motion, which for a free electron has a circular path in the spin-center frame. In an electro-magnetic field, this spin motion generates magnetic and electric dipole energies through the Lorentz force on the electron's point charge. The corresponding electric dipole energy is consistent with the spin-orbit coupling term in the corrected Pauli non-relativistic Hamiltonian but the magnetic dipole energy is one half of that in Dirac's theory. By defining a spin tensor as the angular momentum of the electron's total motion about its spin center, the fundamental equations of motion can be re-written in an identical form to those of the Barut-Zanghi electron theory. These equations of motion can then be expressed using operators applied to a state function of proper time satisfying a Dirac-Schrödinger spinor equation. The operators produce dynamic variables without any probability implications. For the free electron, the state function satisfies Dirac's relativistic wave equation when the Lorentz transformation is applied to express proper time in terms of an observer's space-time coordinates.

Abstract:In this work, we study the relativistic quantum kinetic equations in 2 + 1 dimensions from Wigner function formalism by carrying out a systematic semiclassical expansion up to h order. The derived equations allow us to explore interesting transport phenomena in 2 + 1 dimensions. Within this framework, the parity-odd transport current induced by the external electromagnetic field is self-consistently derived. We also examine the dynamical mass generation by implementing four-fermion interaction with mean-field approximation. In this case, a new kind of transport current is found to be induced by the gradient of the mean-field condensate. Finally, we also utilize this framework to study the dynamical mass generation in an external magnetic field for the (2 + 1)-dimensional system under equilibrium.

Abstract:We develop a covariant kinetic theory for massive fermions in a curved spacetime and an external electromagnetic field based on quantum field theory. We derive four coupled semi-classical kinetic equations accurate to O (h) over bar , which describe the transports of particle number and spin degrees of freedom. The relationship with chiral kinetic theory is discussed. As an application, we study spin polarization in the presence of finite Riemann curvature and an electromagnetic field in both local and global equilibrium states.

Abstract:We give a brief overview of the kinetic theory for spin-1/2 fermions in Wigner function formalism. The chiral and spin kinetic equations can be derived from equations for Wigner functions. A general Wigner function has 16 components which satisfy 32 coupled equations. For massless fermions, the number of independent equations can be significantly reduced due to the decoupling of left-handed and right-handed particles. It can be proved that out of many components of Wigner functions and their coupled equations, only one kinetic equation for the distribution function is independent. This is called the disentanglement theorem for Wigner functions of chiral fermions. For massive fermions, it turns out that one particle distribution function and three spin distribution functions are independent and satisfy four kinetic equations. Various chiral and spin effects such as chiral magnetic and vortical effects, the chiral separation effect, spin polarization effects can be consistently described in the formalism.

Abstract:Maxwell's equations and the Dirac equation are the first-order differential relativistic wave equation for electromagnetic waves and electronic waves respectively. Hence, there is a notable similarity between these two wave equations, which has been widely researched since the Dirac equation was proposed. In this paper, we show that the Maxwell equations can be written in an exact form of the Dirac equation by representing the four Dirac operators with $8\times8$ matrices. Unlike the ordinary $4\times4$ Dirac equation, both spin--1/2 and spin--1 operators can be derived from the $8\times8$ Dirac equation, manifesting that the $8\times8$ Dirac equation is able to describe both electrons and photons. As a result of the restrictions that the electromagnetic wave is a transverse wave, the photon is a spin--1 particle. The four--current in the Maxwell equations and the mass in the electronic Dirac equation also force the electromagnetic field to transform differently to the electronic field. We use this $8\times8$ representation to find that the Zitterbewegung of the photon is actually the oscillatory part of the Poynting vector, often neglected upon time averaging.

Abstract:For relativistic spinless particles, the standard equation with Lorentz covariance is the Klein-Gordon equation, while the square-root Klein-Gordon equation, which is usually referred to be semirelativistic since it lacks Lorentz covariance, is another frequently used equation. We numerically solve these two equations coupled with time-dependent electromagnetic fields using the non-Hermitian Arnoldi and the Hermitian Lanczos propagator, respectively, in the three-dimensional real space. The non-Hermitian Arnoldi method is shown to be ideally suited for the Klein-Gordon equation. A different method to treat the nonlocal operator in the square-root Klein-Gordon equation is developed, allowing the calculation of the propagator to be more efficient. Furthermore, some strong-field problems such as the photoionization, high harmonic generation, and the pair production are studied using our methods. The results of both equations are compared with those of the nonrelativistic Schrodinger equation, which demonstrates the relativistic effects in various regimes. We show that observables of the Klein-Gordon equation and the square-root Klein-Gordon equation are identical up to the first order of relativistic corrections and confirm it numerically.

Abstract:The relativistic two body problem is considered in terms of the action integral in the case of two interacting spinless particles and spin-$1/2$ fermions, interacting by means of vector and scalar fields. The Lagrangians governing the dynamics of such particles are derived in the momentum representation. In the Breit frame, when the two-body system is at rest as whole, the obtained Lagrangians generate the Klein-Gordon-like and Dirac-like equations in the (3+1) phase space. The derived equations are examined by studying a para-positronium in a strong magnetic field. It is shown that a strong magnetic fields result in essential decreasing the para-positronium life-time.

Abstract:A bstract We derive the Wigner functions of polarized photons in the Coulomb gauge with the ħ expansion applied to quantum field theory, and identify side-jump effects for massless photons. We also discuss the photonic chiral vortical effect for the Chern-Simons current and zilch vortical effect for the zilch current in local thermal equilibrium as a consistency check for our formalism. The results are found to be in agreement with those obtained from different approaches. Moreover, using the real-time formalism, we construct the quantum kinetic theory (QKT) for polarized photons. By further adopting a specific power counting scheme for the distribution functions, we provide a more succinct form of an effective QKT. This photonic QKT involves quantum corrections associated with self-energy gradients in the collision term, which are analogous to the side-jump corrections pertinent to spin-orbit interactions in the chiral kinetic theory for massless fermions. The same theoretical framework can also be directly applied to weakly coupled gluons in the absence of background color fields.

Abstract:We study the evolutions of selected quasi-(1+1) dimensional wavepacket solutions to the Klein-Gordon equation for a relativistic charged particle in uniform motion or accelerated by a uniform electric field in Minkowski space. We explore how good the charge density of a Klein-Gordon wavepacket can be approximated by a Gaussian state with the single-particle interpretation. We find that the minimal initial width of a wavepacket for a good Gaussian approximation in position space is about the Compton wavelength of the particle divided by its Lorentz factor at the initial moment. Relativistic length contraction also manifests in the spreading of the wavepacket's charge density.

Abstract:In this paper we provide using the Clifford and spin-Clifford formalism and some few results of the extensor calculus a derivation of the conservation laws that follow directly from the Dirac-Hestenes equation (DHE) describing a Dirac-Hestenes spinor field (DHSF) in interaction with an external electromagnetic field without using the Lagrangian formalism. In particular, we show that the energy-momentum and total angular momentum extensors of a DHSF is not conserved in spacetime regions permitting the existence of a null electromagnetic field F but a non null electromagnetic potential A. These results have been used together with some others recently obtained (e.g., that the classical relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi equation is equivalent to a DHE satisfied by a particular class of DHSF) to obtain the correct relativistic quantum potential when the Dirac theory is interpreted as a de Broglie-Bohm theory. Some results appearing in the literature on this issue are criticized and the origin of some misconceptions is detailed with a rigorous mathematical analysis.

Abstract: We provide an alternative approach to relativistic dynamics based on the Feshbach projection technique. Instead of directly studying the Dirac equation, we derive a two-component equation for the upper spinor. This approach allows one to investigate the underlying physics in a different perspective. For particles with small mass such as the neutrino, the leading order equation has a Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, implying there is no leakage between the upper and lower spinors. In the weak relativistic regime, the leading order corresponds to a non-Hermitian correction to the Pauli equation, which takes into account the non-zero possibility of finding the lower-spinor state and offers a more precise description.
Wigner function properties for electromagnetic systems

Abstract:Using the Wigner-Vlasov formalism, an exact 3D solution of the Schrödinger equation for a scalar particle in an electromagnetic field is constructed. Electric and magnetic fields are non-uniform. According to the exact expression for the wave function, the search for two types of the Wigner functions is conducted. The first function is the usual Wigner function with a modified momentum. The second Wigner function is constructed on the basis of the Weyl-Stratonovich transform in papers [Phys. Rev. A 35 2791 (1987)] or [Phys. Rev. B 99 014423 (2019)]. It turns out that the second function, unlike the first one, has areas of negative values for wave functions with the Gaussian distribution (Hudson's theorem). An example of electromagnetic quantum system described by a non-Gaussian wave function has successfully been found. The second Wigner function is positive over the whole phase space for the non-Gaussian wave function. This result is analogous to the Hudson theorem for the gage-invariant Wigner function. On the one hand, knowing the Wigner functions allows one to find the distribution of the mean momentum vector field and the energy spectrum of the quantum system. On the other hand, within the framework of the Wigner-Vlasov formalism, the mean momentum distribution and the magnitude of the energy are initially known. Consequently, the mean momentum distributions and energy values obtained according to the Wigner functions can be compared with the exact momentum distribution and energy values. This paper presents this comparison and describes the differences. The Vlasov-Moyal approximation of average acceleration flow has been built in phase space for a quantum system with electromagnetic field. The obtained approximation makes it possible to cut the Vlasov chain off at the second equation and also to analyze the Boltzmann H-function evolution.

Abstract:We present a derivation of quantum kinetic theory for massive spin-1 particles from the Wigner-function formalism up to first order in an $\hbar$-expansion, including a general interaction term. Both local and nonlocal contributions are computed in a covariant fashion. It is shown that, up to first order in $\hbar$, the collision term takes the same form as in the case of spin-1/2 particles.

Abstract:We show that the Schrödinger equation can be derived assuming the Galilean covariance of a generic wave equation and the validity of the de Broglie's wave-particle duality hypothesis. We also obtain from this set of assumptions the transformation law for the wave function under a Galilean boost and prove that complex wave functions are unavoidable for a consistent description of a physical system. The extension to the relativistic domain of the above analysis is also provided. We show that Lorentz covariance and wave-particle duality are consistent with two different transformation laws for the wave function under a Lorentz boost. This leads to two different wave equations, namely, the Klein-Gordon equation and the Lorentz covariant Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:We propose a relativistic theory for spin density matrices of vector mesons based on Kadanoff-Baym equations in the closed-time-path formalism. The theory puts the calculation of spin observables such as the spin density matrix element ρ00 for vector mesons on a solid ground. Within the theory we formulate ρ00 for φ mesons into a factorization form in separation of momentum and spacetime variables. We argue that the main contribution to ρ00 at lower energies should be from the φ fields that can polarize the strange quark and antiquark in the same way as electromagnetic fields. The key observation is that there is correlation inside the φ meson wave function between the φ field that polarizes the strange quark and that polarizes the strange antiquark. This is reflected by the fact that the contributions to ρ00 are all in squares of fields that are nonvanishing even if the fields may strongly fluctuate in spacetime. Abstract:We investigate in the equal-time formalism the derivation and truncation of infinite hierarchies of equations of motion for the energy moments of the covariant Wigner function. From these hierarchies we then extract kinetic equations for the physical distribution functions which are related to low-order energy moments, and show how to determine the higher order moments in terms of these lowest order ones. We apply the general formalism to scalar and spinor QED with classical background fields and compare with the results derived from the three-dimensional Wigner transformation method.
