Abstract:We propose that the experimentally observed resistivity upturn of cuprates at low temperatures may be explained by properly accounting for the effects of disorder in a strongly correlated metallic host. Within a calculation of the dc conductivity using real-space diagonalization of a Hubbard model treated in an inhomogeneous unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, we find that correlations induce magnetic droplets around impurities, and give rise to additional magnetic scattering which causes the resistivity upturn. A pseudogap in the density of states is shown to enhance both the disorder-induced magnetic state and the resistivity upturns.

Abstract:The last 15 years have witnessed important progresses in our understanding of the mechanism of superconductivity in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates. There is now strong evidence that the strange metal behavior is induced by the quantum critical fluctuation at the pseudogap end point, where the Fermi surface changes its topology from hole-like to electron-like. However, experiments show that the quantum critical behavior in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates is qualitatively different from that observed in the heavy Fermion systems and the iron-based superconductors, in both of which the quantum critical behavior can be attributed to the quantum phase transition toward a symmetry breaking phase. The fact that the pseudogap exists as a spectral gap without a corresponding symmetry breaking order, together with the fact that the strange metal behavior occurs as a quantum critical behavior without a corresponding symmetry breaking phase transition, exposes the central difficulty of the field: the lack of a universal low energy effective theory description of the high-$T_{c}$ phenomenology beyond the Landau paradigm. Recent experiments imply that the dualism between the local moment and the itinerant quasiparticle character of the electron in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprates may serve as an organizing principle to go beyond the Landau paradigm and may hold the key to the mystery of the pseudogap phenomena and the strange metal behavior.

Abstract:Gradual evolution of two phase coexistence between dynamical and static regimes in cuprates is first investigated in the real space by making use of available neutron scattering, NMR and μSR data. Analyses of the Hall effect and the ARPES spectra reveals the presence of two groups of charge carriers in LSCO. The T-dependent component is due to the thermal activation of bound electron-hole structures seen near antinodal points in the Brillouin zone, thus introducing the two component physics also for the momentum representation. Interpretation of so-called 'van Hove bands' undergoes drastic changes. Importance of the findings for pseudo-gap physics is stressed. Relation to some recent STM and STS results is discussed.

Abstract:In cuprates, as doping $p$ is reduced from the overdoped side through the quantum critical point $p^*$, a transition in Hall number density of carriers is observed, in which this number of carriers reduces from $1+p$ holes per copper site to $p$ holes per copper site. The connection of this $1+p$ to $p$ transition with pseudogap and with superconductivity is discussed. A "panoramic" view or a "broad-brush" discussion is presented in which Anderson's "unhappy" electrons take on a central stage.

Abstract:This paper seeks to synthesize much recent work on the HTSC materials around the latest STM results from Davis and coworkers. The conductance diffuse scattering results in particular are used as point of entry to discuss bosonic modes, both of condensed and uncondensed form. The bosonic mode picture is essential to understanding an ever growing range of observations within the HTSC field. The work is expounded within the context of the negative-U, boson-fermion modelling long advocated by the author. This general approach is presently seeing much theoretical development, into which I have looked to couple many of the experimental advances. While the formal theory is not yet sufficiently detailed to cover adequately all the experimental complexities presented by the real cuprate systems, it is clear that it affords very appreciable support to the line taken. An attempt is made throughout to say why and how it is that these events are tied so very closely to this particular set of materials.

Thermodynamic evidence for electron correlation-driven flattening of the quasiparticle bands in the high-Tc cuprates

Abstract:A flattened electronic band is one of several possible routes for increasing the strength of the pairing interactions in a superconductor. With this in mind, we show here that thermodynamic measurements of the high-Tc cuprates reveal an appreciably stronger electron correlation-driven flattening of the quasiparticle bands than has previously been indicated. Specifically, we find that thermodynamic measurements indicate an electronic entropy in excess of that that can be accounted for by the value of the universal Fermi velocity inferred from photoemission experiments. The observed band flattening implies that the Van Hove singularity features prominently in calorimetry measurements, causing it undermine prior arguments for a divergence in the renormalization of the effective mass near a critical doping $p^\ast$ based on calorimetry measurements. The band flattening is also sufficient to drive the cuprates into a strong pairing regime where the maximum transition temperature becomes constrained by phase fluctuations.

Abstract:One of the most puzzling features of high-temperature cuprate superconductors is the pseudogap state, which appears above the temperature at which superconductivity is destroyed. There remain fundamental questions regarding its nature and its relation to superconductivity. But to address these questions, we must first determine whether the pseudogap and superconducting states share a common property: particle-hole symmetry. We introduce a new technique to test particle-hole symmetry by using laser pulses to manipulate and measure the chemical potential on picosecond time scales. The results strongly suggest that the asymmetry in the density of states is inverted in the pseudogap state, implying a particle-hole asymmetric gap. Independent of interpretation, these results can test theoretical predictions of the density of states in cuprates.

Abstract:While closing their famous paper entitled "Pseudogap: friend or foe of high-Tc?" Norman, Pines, and Kallin underlined that before we have a microscopic theory, we must have a consistent phenomenology. This was in 2005. As it turns out in 2006 a phenomenological theory of the pseudogap state was proposed by Gor'kov and Teitel'baum. This originated from their careful analysis of the Hall effect data, and it has been very successful model as numerous investigations over the years has shown. In this mini-review the essence of the idea of Gor'kov and Teitel'baum is presented. The pseudogap obtained by them from the Hall effect data agrees very well with that obtained from the ARPES data. This famous Gor'kov-Teitel'baum Thermal Activation model (in short GTTA model) not only presents a consistent phenomenology of the pseudogap state but also it rationalizes the Hall angle data and it presents a strong case against the famous "two-relaxation times" idea of Anderson and collaborators.

Abstract:I review some of the experimental evidence and theoretical arguments that suggest that pseudogap matter is a new form of matter that coexists with coherent electron matter in the normal state and with superconducting matter below the superconducting transition temperature. I describe work in progress on a phenomenological two-fluid description of the evolution of pseudogap behavior that offers an explanation for the unexpectedly simple scaling behavior for the uniform magnetic susceptibility found in the underdoped cuprates and use this to propose a physical picture of the underdoped cuprates and to estimate the fraction of quasiparticles that become superconducting in underdoped superconductors.

Interpretation of Scanning Tunneling Quasiparticle Interference and Impurity States in Cuprates

Abstract:We apply a recently developed method combining first principles based Wannier functions with solutions to the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to the problem of interpreting STM data in cuprate superconductors. We show that the observed images of Zn on the surface of Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8} can only be understood by accounting for the tails of the Cu Wannier functions, which include significant weight on apical O sites in neighboring unit cells. This calculation thus puts earlier crude "filter" theories on a microscopic foundation and solves a long-standing puzzle. We then study quasiparticle interference phenomena induced by out-of-plane weak potential scatterers, and show how patterns long observed in cuprates can be understood in terms of the interference of Wannier functions above the surface. Our results show excellent agreement with experiment and enable a better understanding of novel phenomena in the cuprates via STM imaging.
Charge order and emergent symmetries in cuprate superconductors

Abstract:In this paper, we present our studies of the phase diagram of the cuprate superconductors performed in recent years. We describe how a few field-theoretical concepts can be used to account for the puzzling properties of these compounds. Starting with a short exposition of recent experimental developments, we then introduce the concept of an emergent SU(2) symmetry, which rotates between the superconducting and charge order parameters. We describe a solvable model for which this symmetry turns out to be exact and derive the corresponding effective field theory in terms of a non-linear {\sigma} model. We then turn to the experimental consequences of our model with the presence of skyrmions inside the vortex core and an elegant account of the B-T phase diagram. Next, we move on to the second concept, which is the one of an emergent U(1) gauge field in the theory. Within this more general framework, the pseudogap transition can be viewed as a confining/deconfining transition. Experimental consequences for a few spectroscopic probes like inelastic neutron scattering, Raman spectroscopy, phonon line in x-ray scattering and angle-resolved photoemission experiments are studied. This theory suggests the presence of incoherent bosons at moderate temperatures in the phase diagram of the cuprates, which would undergo a jamming transition at optimal doping [1]. Consequences of the presence of such bosons on the transport properties of these materials are examined.

Weak Phase Stiffness and Nature of the Quantum Critical Point in Underdoped Cuprates

Abstract:Despite more than two decades of intensive investigations, the true nature of high temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity observed in the cuprates remains elusive to the researchers. In particular, in the so-called `underdoped' region, the overall behavior of superconductivity deviates $qualitatively$ from the standard theoretical description pioneered by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS). Recently, the importance of phase fluctuation of the superconducting order parameter has gained significant support from various experiments. However, the microscopic mechanism responsible for the surprisingly soft phase remains one of the most important unsolved puzzles. Here, opposite to the standard BCS starting point, we propose a simple, solvable low-energy model in the strong coupling limit, which maps the superconductivity literally into a well-understood physics of superfluid in a special dilute bosonic system of local pairs of doped holes. In the prototypical material (La$_{1-\delta}$Sr$_\delta$)$_2$CuO$_4$, without use of any free parameter, a $d$-wave superconductivity is obtained for doping above $\sim 5.2\%$, below which unexpected incoherent $p$-wave pairs dominate. Throughout the whole underdoped region, very soft phases are found to originate from enormous mass enhancement of the pairs. Furthermore, a striking mass divergence is predicted that dictates the occurrence of the observed quantum critical point. Our model produces properties of the superfluid in good agreement with the experiments, and provides new insights into several current puzzles. Owing to its simplicity, this model offers a paradigm of great value in answering the long-standing challenges in underdoped cuprates.

Abstract:We use angle-resolved photoemission to unravel the quasiparticle decoherence process in the high-T_c cuprates. The coherent band is highly renormalized, and the incoherent part manifests itself as a nearly vertical “dive” in the E-k intensity plot that approaches the bare band bottom. We find that the coherence-incoherence crossover energies in the hole- and electron-doped cuprates are quite different, but scale to their corresponding bare bandwidth. This rules out antiferromagnetic fluctuations as the main source for decoherence. We also observe the coherent band bottom at the zone center, whose intensity is strongly suppressed by the decoherence process. Consequently, the coherent band dispersion for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates is obtained, and is qualitatively consistent with the framework of Gutzwiller projection.

Abstract:The low-energy quasiparticle excitations in hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors are investigated via both experimental and theoretical means. It is found that the doping and momentum dependence of the empirical low-energy quasiparticle excitations is consistent with a scenario of coexisting competing orders and superconductivity in the ground state of the cuprates. This finding, based on zero-field quasiparticle spectra, is further corrobarated by the patially resolved vortex-state scanning tunneling spectroscopy, which reveals pseudogap-like features consistent with a remaining competing order inside the vortex core upon the suppression of superconductivity. The competing orders compatible with empirical observations include the charge-density wave and spin-density wave. In contrast, spectral characteristics derived from incorporating the $d$-density wave as a competing order appear unfavorable in comparison with experiments.

Abstract:Zha, Cooper, and Pines [Phys. Rev. B 53, 8253 (1996)] proposed a model which attempted to describe the c axis resistivity behavior. They ascribed all the temperature dependence of rho(c) at low temperatures to the in-plane density of states N(0), neglecting that the c-axis scattering rate tau(c) is temperature dependent. It is also noted that the determination procedure of T* in their paper is incorrect, which resulted in an improper fit. [S0163-1829(98)03841-7].

Abstract:Abstract Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful quantum probe, but the early conclusions on the physics of the cuprates, based on a limited set of data, have to be revised in view of recent findings and results from extensive literature analyses of most NMR data. These show two coupled electronic spin components that influence the nuclei, most easily seen with the planar Cu shift anisotropy. One component is spin from the recently identified ubiquitous metallic excitations, the other likely due to the intrinsic, antiferromagnetically coupled electronic Cu spin. Both components and its intricate interaction leave their imprint on nuclear shifts and relaxation. They also show a family dependence seen in the charge sharing between planar Cu and O. The main phenomena of the doping and temperature dependences of the interplay between both spins components are discussed in terms of an apparent phenomenology that awaits explanation from theory.

Abstract:A review of the phenomenology and microscopy of cuprate superconductors is presented, with particular attention to universal conductance features, which reveal the existence of two electronic subsystems. The overall electronic system consists of $1+p$ charges, where $p$ is the doping. At low dopings exactly one hole is localized per planar copper-oxygen unit, while upon increasing doping and temperature, the hole is gradually delocalized and becomes itinerant. Remarkably, the itinerant holes exhibit identical Fermi-liquid character across the cuprate phase diagram. This universality enables a simple count of carrier density and yields comprehensive understanding of the key features in the normal and superconducting state. A possible superconducting mechanism is presented, compatible with the key experimental facts. The base of this mechanism is the interaction of fast Fermi-liquid carriers with localized holes. A change in the microscopic nature of chemical bonding in the copper-oxide planes, from ionic to covalent, is invoked to explain the phase diagram of these fascinating compounds.
