Abstract:We measure magnetic quantum oscillations in the underdoped cuprates YBa2Cu3O6+x with x=0.61, 0.69, using fields of up to 85 T. The quantum-oscillation frequencies and effective masses obtained suggest that the Fermi energy in the cuprates has a maximum at hole doping p approximately 0.11-0.12. On either side, the effective mass may diverge, possibly due to phase transitions associated with the T=0 limit of the metal-insulator crossover (low-p side), and the postulated topological transition from small to large Fermi surface close to optimal doping (high p side).
Connecting high-field quantum oscillations to zero-field electron spectral functions in the underdoped cuprates

Abstract:The central puzzle of the cuprate superconductors at low hole density is the nature of the pseudogap regime. It has a number of seemingly distinct experimental signatures: a suppression of the paramagnetic spin susceptibility at high temperatures, low energy electronic excitations that extend over arcs in the Brillouin zone, X-ray detection of charge density wave order at intermediate temperatures, and quantum oscillations at high magnetic fields and low temperatures. We show that a model of competing charge density wave and superconducting orders provides a unified description of the intermediate and low temperature regimes. We treat quantum oscillations at high field beyond semiclassical approximations, and find clear and robust signatures of an electron pocket compatible with existing observations; we also predict oscillations due to additional hole pockets. In the zero field and intermediate temperature regime, we compute the electronic spectrum in the presence of thermally fluctuating charge density and superconducting orders. Our results are compatible with experimental trends.

Abstract:Despite twenty years of research, the phase diagram of high transition- temperature superconductors remains enigmatic. A central issue is the origin of the differences in the physical properties of these copper oxides doped to opposite sides of the superconducting region. In the overdoped regime, the material behaves as a reasonably conventional metal, with a large Fermi surface. The underdoped regime, however, is highly anomalous and appears to have no coherent Fermi surface, but only disconnected "Fermi arcs". The fundamental question, then, is whether underdoped copper oxides have a Fermi surface, and if so, whether it is topologically different from that seen in the overdoped regime. Here we report the observation of quantum oscillations in the electrical resistance of the oxygen-ordered copper oxide YBa2Cu3O6.5, establishing the existence of a well-defined Fermi surface in the ground state of underdoped copper oxides, once superconductivity is suppressed by a magnetic field. The low oscillation frequency reveals a Fermi surface made of small pockets, in contrast to the large cylinder characteristic of the overdoped regime. Two possible interpretations are discussed: either a small pocket is part of the band structure specific to YBa2Cu3O6.5 or small pockets arise from a topological change at a critical point in the phase diagram. Our understanding of high-transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors will depend critically on which of these two interpretations proves to be correct.

Abstract:The electrical resistivity rho_c of the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBCO was measured perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes on ultra-high quality single crystals in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The incoherent insulating-like behavior of rho_c at high temperature, characteristic of all underdoped cuprates, is found to cross over to a coherent regime of metallic behavior at low temperature. This crossover coincides with the emergence of the small electron pocket detected in the Fermi surface of YBCO via quantum oscillations, the Hall and Seebeck coefficients and with the detection of a unidirectional modulation of the charge density as seen by high-field NMR measurements. The low coherence temperature is quantitatively consistent with the small hopping integral t_perp inferred from the splitting of the quantum oscillation frequencies. We conclude that the Fermi-surface reconstruction in YBCO at dopings from p = 0.08 to at least p = 0.15, attributed to stripe order, produces a metallic state with 3D coherence deep in the underdoped regime.

Abstract:Submitted for the MAR14 Meeting of The American Physical Society Quantum quenching an O(N) non linear sigma model (NLSM) and oscillation experiments of high Tc underdoped cuprate superconductor1 LING YAN HUNG, WENBO FU, SUBIR SACHDEV, Harvard Univ — Recent X-ray scattering experiments have provided strong evidence of the coexistence of a charge density wave order (CDW) and superconductivity (SC) in underdoped crystals of the prototypical high-Tc cuprate superconductor, YBa2Cu3O6+x. Sachdev et al have proposed a O(6) NLSM as an effective description of the competing orders, which finds excellent quantitative fit with the X-ray data. On the other hand, Hinton et al report coherent oscillations associated with CDW in these cuprates, whose phenomenology above and below Tc find qualitative match with the picture of the competing orders. Motivated by these recent results, we study the dynamical evolution of the O(6) NLSM model upon a quantum quench – a sudden disturbance of some parameters of the model to mimic the effect of the laser pulse in the oscillation experiment. As a first brush, we simplify the problem by taking the large-N limit of the O(6) NLSM. We observe a general exponentially decaying oscillations, which experiences phase shift as temperature is varied, at an extent determined by the specific choice of the parameter that is quenched. Absence of Fermi surface reconstruction in pressure-driven overdoped YBCO

Abstract:The evolution of the critical superconducting temperature and field, quantum oscillation frequencies and effective mass $m^{*}$ in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) crystals ($p$ = 0.11, with $p$ the hole concentration per Cu atom) points to a partial suppression of the charge orders with increasing pressure up to 7 GPa, mimicking doping. Application of pressures up to 25 GPa pushes the sample to the overdoped side of the superconducting dome. Contrary to other cuprates, or to doping studies on YBCO, the frequency of the quantum oscillations measured in that pressure range do not support the picture of a Fermi-surface reconstruction in the overdoped regime, but possibly point to the existence of a new charge order.

Abstract:We show that lightly doped YBa2Cu3O6+y has multiple holon pockets with different areas, which lead to multiple frequencies of magnetic quantum oscillations. Using neutron-scattering data on incommensurate spin ordering we determine these areas, which yields frequencies in good agreement with experiments. Divergence of the effective mass observed in magnetic quantum oscillations indicates a quantum phase transition at the oxygen content y approximate to 0.48. We argue that the transition is the onset of quasistatic incommensurate magnetic order predicted by theory and observed in neutron scattering.

Abstract:Despite more than two decades of intensive investigations, the true nature of high temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity observed in the cuprates remains elusive to the researchers. In particular, in the so-called `underdoped' region, the overall behavior of superconductivity deviates $qualitatively$ from the standard theoretical description pioneered by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS). Recently, the importance of phase fluctuation of the superconducting order parameter has gained significant support from various experiments. However, the microscopic mechanism responsible for the surprisingly soft phase remains one of the most important unsolved puzzles. Here, opposite to the standard BCS starting point, we propose a simple, solvable low-energy model in the strong coupling limit, which maps the superconductivity literally into a well-understood physics of superfluid in a special dilute bosonic system of local pairs of doped holes. In the prototypical material (La$_{1-\delta}$Sr$_\delta$)$_2$CuO$_4$, without use of any free parameter, a $d$-wave superconductivity is obtained for doping above $\sim 5.2\%$, below which unexpected incoherent $p$-wave pairs dominate. Throughout the whole underdoped region, very soft phases are found to originate from enormous mass enhancement of the pairs. Furthermore, a striking mass divergence is predicted that dictates the occurrence of the observed quantum critical point. Our model produces properties of the superfluid in good agreement with the experiments, and provides new insights into several current puzzles. Owing to its simplicity, this model offers a paradigm of great value in answering the long-standing challenges in underdoped cuprates.

Abstract:A long standing problem in the study of the under-hole-doped cuprates has been the description of the Fermi surfaces underlying the high magnetic field quantum oscillations, and their connection to the higher temperature pseudogap metal. Harrison and Sebastian (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1103.4181" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1103.4181">arXiv:1103.4181</a>) proposed that the pseudogap `Fermi arcs' are reconstructed into an electron pocket by field-induced charge density wave order. But computations on such a model (Zhang and Mei, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1411.2098" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1411.2098">arXiv:1411.2098</a>) show an unobserved additional oscillation frequency from a Fermi surface arising from the backsides of the hole pockets completing the Fermi arcs. We describe a transition from a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*) model of the pseudogap metal, to a metal with bi-directional charge density wave order without fractionalization. We show that the confinement of the fermionic spinon excitations of the FL* across this transition can eliminate the unobserved oscillation frequency.

Abstract:The underlying physics of the magnetic-field-induced resistive state in high temperature cuprate superconductors remains a mystery. One interpretation is that the application of magnetic field destroys the d-wave superconducting gap to uncover a Fermi surface that behaves like a conventional (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://i.e.Fermi" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> Liquid) metal (1). Another view is that an applied magnetic field destroys long range superconducting phase coherence, but the superconducting gap amplitude survives (2, 3). By measuring the specific heat of ultra-clean YBa2Cu3O6.56 (YBCO 6.56), we obtain a measure of the quasi-particle density of states from the superconducting state well into the magnetic-field-induced resistive state. We have found that at very high magnetic fields the specific heat exhibits both the conventional temperature dependence and quantum oscillations expected for a Fermi Liquid. On the other hand, the magnetic field dependence of the quasi-particle density of states follows a \sqrt{H} behavior that persists right through the zero-resistance transition, evidencing the fully developed d-wave superconducting gap over the entire magnetic field range measured. The coexistence of these two phenomena pose a rigorous thermodynamic constraint on theories of high-magnetic-field resistive state in the cuprates.

4D-XY quantum criticality in a doped Mott insulator

Abstract:A new phenomenology is proposed for the superfluid density of strongly underdoped cuprate superconductors based on recent data for ultra-clean single crystals of YBCO. The data feature a puzzling departure from Uemura scaling and a decline of the slope as the T_c = 0 quantum critical point is approached. We show that this behavior can be understood in terms of the renormalization of quasiparticle effective charge by quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase as described by a (3+1)-dimensional XY model. We calculate the renormalization of the superfluid density and its slope, explain the new phenomenology, and predict its eventual demise close to the QCP.

Abstract:Recent studies show that quantum oscillations thought to be associated with a density wave reconstructed Fermi surface disappear at a critical value of the doping for YBa2Cu3O6+y and the cyclotron mass diverges as the critical value is approached from the high doping side. We argue that the phenomenon is due to a Lifshitz transition where the pockets giving rise to the quantum oscillations connect to form an open (quasi-one-dimensional) Fermi surface. The estimated critical doping is close to that found by experiment and the theory predicts a logarithmic divergence of the cyclotron mass with a coefficient comparable to that observed in experiment.

A theorem of Kohn applied to quantum oscillations in Cuprates

Abstract:In this note I apply a theorem of Kohn to quantum oscillations in cuprates. I show that when combined with Gell-Mann and Low theorem, there is rigorous justification of quantum oscillations as in a Fermi liquid for cuprates. The Gell-Man-Low theorem is not perturbative, and applies more generally as long as the adiabatic evolution from an isolated non-degenerate state is the case. Oscillation frequencies are identical to the non-interacting problem. Thus, quantum oscillations protect the Fermi liquid and is in turn protected by it. This is not to imply that other properties of the cuprates that do not have a gap in the spectrum could not exhibit non-Fermi liquid behavior, for example, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Quantum Oscillations in a Bilayer with Broken Mirror Symmetry: a Minimal Model for YBa_2Cu_3O_6 + Δ

Abstract:Using an exact numerical solution and semiclassical analysis, we investigate quantum oscillations (QOs) in a model of a bilayer system with an anisotropic (elliptical) electron pocket in each plane. Key features of QO experiments in the high temperature superconducting cuprate YBCO can be reproduced by such a model, in particular the pattern of oscillation frequencies (which reflect "magnetic breakdown" between the two pockets) and the polar and azimuthal angular dependence of the oscillation amplitudes. However, the requisite magnetic breakdown is possible only under the assumption that the horizontal mirror plane symmetry is spontaneously broken and that the bilayer tunneling t(perpendicular to) is substantially renormalized from its 'bare' value. Under the assumption that t(perpendicular to) = (Z) over tildet(perpendicular to)((0)), where (Z) over tilde is a measure of the quasiparticle weight, this suggests that (Z) over tilde less than or similar to 1/20. Detailed comparisons with new YBa2Cu3O6.58 QO data, taken over a very broad range of magnetic field, confirm specific predictions made by the breakdown scenario.

Abstract:Interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling is generic in two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can induce very low-energy phonon modes. Using high-resolution inelastic hard x-ray scattering, we uncover the ultralow energy phonon mode along the Cu-O bond direction in the high- Tc cuprate (Bi, Pb)2 (Sr, La)2CuO6+δ (Bi2201). The energy and full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of these modes are independent of temperature, while their intensity decreases with doping in accordance with an increasing c -axis lattice parameter. We compare the experimental results to first-principles density functional theory simulations and identify the observed mode as a van der Waals phonon, which arises from the shear motion of the adjacent Bi-O layers. This shows that Bi-based cuprate has vibrational properties similar to graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, which can be exploited to engineer novel heterostructures. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.8.024804 ©2024 American Physical Society

Observing periodic gap variations in cuprates

Abstract:Central to the enigma of the cuprates is ubiquitous electronic inhomogeneity arising from a variety of electronic orders that coexist with superconductivity, the individual signatures of which have been impossible to disentangle despite four decades of intense research. This strong nanoscale inhomogeneity complicates interpretation of measurements both by probes which average over this inhomogeneity and those, like scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), which should be able to spatially resolve variations driven by both order and inhomogeneity. Here, we develop a novel technique that directly acknowledges this electronic inhomogeneity and extracts statistically significant features from scanning tunneling spectroscopic data. Applying our novel technique to single and bilayer Bi-based cuprates spanning a large doping range, we peer through local inhomogeneities and find that the gap breaks translational and rotational symmetries and varies periodically in a four-fold pattern. Our direct observation of a symmetry breaking gap in the single particle tunneling spectra adds strong credence to the pair density wave hypotheses supposed to exist in these materials. We also discuss various implications of our observations and, in particular, how they can explain the origin of the low energy checkerboard pattern.

Abstract:Fluctuating superconductivity—vestigial Cooper pairing in the resistive state of a material—is usually associated with low dimensionality, strong disorder, or low carrier density. Here, we report single-particle spectroscopic, thermodynamic and magnetic evidence for persistent superconducting fluctuations in the heavily hole-doped cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Tc=66 K) despite the high carrier density. With a sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo calculation, we show how a partially flat band at (π,0) can help enhance superconducting phase fluctuations. Abstract:Quantum oscillations and negative Hall and Seebeck coefficients at low temperature and high magnetic field have shown the Fermi surface of underdoped cuprates to contain a small closed electron pocket. It is thought to result from a reconstruction by charge order, but whether it is the order seen by NMR and ultrasound above a threshold field or the short-range modulations seen by X-ray diffraction in zero field is unclear. Here we use measurements of the thermal Hall conductivity in YBCO to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction occurs only above a sharply defined onset field, equal to the transition field seen in ultrasound. This reveals that electrons do not experience long-range broken translational symmetry in the zero-field ground state, and hence in zero field there is no quantum critical point for the onset of charge order as a function of doping.

Abstract:Low-temperature heat transport was used to investigate the ground state of high-purity single crystals of the lightly doped cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.33. Samples were measured with doping concentrations on either side of the superconducting phase boundary. We report the observation of delocalized fermionic excitations at zero energy in the nonsuperconducting state, which shows that the ground state of underdoped cuprates is a thermal metal. Its low-energy spectrum appears to be similar to that of the d-wave superconductor, i.e., nodal. The insulating ground state observed in underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 is attributed to the competing spin-density-wave order.
