Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">We review detection methods that are currently in use or have been proposed to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. We consider both Bayesian and frequentist searches using ground-based and space-based laser interferometers, spacecraft Doppler tracking, and pulsar timing arrays; and we allow for anisotropy, non-Gaussianity, and non-standard polarization states. Our focus is on relevant data analysis issues, and not on the particular astrophysical or early Universe sources that might give rise to such backgrounds. We provide a unified treatment of these searches at the level of detector response functions, detection sensitivity curves, and, more generally, at the level of the likelihood function, since the choice of signal and noise models and prior probability distributions are actually what define the search. Pedagogical examples are given whenever possible to compare and contrast different approaches. We have tried to make the article as self-contained and comprehensive as possible, targeting graduate students and new researchers looking to enter this field.</p>

Detecting non-Gaussian gravitational wave backgrounds: a unified framework

Abstract:We describe a novel approach to the detection and parameter estimation of a non\textendash Gaussian stochastic background of gravitational waves. The method is based on the determination of relevant statistical parameters using importance sampling. We show that it is possible to improve the Gaussian detection statistics, by simulating realizations of the expected signal for a given model. While computationally expensive, our method improves the detection performance, leveraging the prior knowledge on the expected signal, and can be used in a natural way to extract physical information about the background. We present the basic principles of our approach, characterize the detection statistic performances in a simplified context and discuss possible applications to the detection of some astrophysical foregrounds. We argue that the proposed approach, complementarily to the ones available in literature might be used to detect suitable astrophysical foregrounds by currently operating and future gravitational wave detectors.

Abstract:Astrophysical sources emit gravitational waves in a large variety of processes occurred since the beginning of star and galaxy formation. These waves permeate our high redshift Universe, and form a background which is the result of the superposition of different components, each associated to a specific astrophysical process. Each component has different spectral properties and features that it is important to investigate in view of a possible, future detection. In this contribution, we will review recent theoretical predictions for backgrounds produced by extragalactic sources and discuss their detectability with current and future gravitational wave observatories.

Gravitational-Wave Geodesy: A New Tool for Validating Detection of the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background

Abstract:A valuable target for advanced gravitational-wave detectors is the stochastic gravitational-wave background. The stochastic background imparts a weak correlated signal into networks of gravitational-wave detectors, and so standard searches for the gravitational-wave background rely on measuring cross-correlations between pairs of widely-separated detectors. Stochastic searches, however, can be affected by any other correlated effects which may also be present, including correlated frequency combs and magnetic Schumann resonances. As stochastic searches become sensitive to ever-weaker signals, it is increasingly important to develop methods to separate a true astrophysical signal from other spurious and/or terrestrial signals. Here, we describe a novel method to achieve this goal -- gravitational-wave geodesy. Just as radio geodesy allows for the localization of radio telescopes, so too can observations of the gravitational-wave background be used to infer the positions and orientations of gravitational-wave detectors. By demanding that a true observation of the gravitational-wave background yield constraints consistent with the baseline's known geometry, we demonstrate that we can successfully validate true observations of the gravitational-wave background while rejecting spurious signals due to correlated terrestrial effects.

Abstract:A low frequency stochastic background of gravitational waves may be detected by pulsar timing experiments in the next five to ten years. Using methods developed to analyze interferometric gravitational wave data, in this paper we lay out the optimal techniques to detect a background of gravitational waves using a pulsar timing array. We show that for pulsar distances and gravitational wave frequencies typical of pulsar timing experiments, neglecting the effect of the metric perturbation at the pulsar does not result in a significant deviation from optimality. We discuss methods for setting upper limits using the optimal statistic, show how to construct skymaps using the pulsar timing array, and consider several issues associated with realistic analysis of pulsar timing data.

Abstract:Stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds can be of either cosmological or astrophysical origin. The detection of an astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background with ground-based interferometers is expected in the near future. Perhaps even more excitingly, the detection of stochastic backgrounds of cosmological origin by future ground-based interferometers could reveal invaluable information about the early Universe. From this perspective, the astrophysical background is a {\it foreground} that can prevent the extraction of this information from the data. In this paper, we revisit a time-frequency domain notching procedure previously proposed to remove the astrophysical foreground in the context of next-generation ground-based detectors, but we consider the more realistic scenario where we remove individually detectable signals by taking into account the uncertainty in the estimation of their parameters. We find that time-frequency domain masks can still efficiently remove the astrophysical foreground and suppress it to about $5\%$ of its original level. Further removal of the foreground formed by unresolvable events (in particular, unresolvable binary neutron stars), which is about $10$ times larger than the residual foreground from realistic notching, would require detector sensitivity improvements. Therefore, the main limitation in the search for a cosmological background is the unresolvable foreground itself, and not the residual of the notching procedure.

Toward robust detections of nanohertz gravitational waves

Abstract:The recent observation of a common red-noise process in pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) suggests that the detection of nanohertz gravitational waves might be around the corner. However, in order to confidently attribute this red process to gravitational waves, one must observe the Hellings-Downs curve -- the telltale angular correlation function associated with a gravitational-wave background. This effort is complicated by the complex modelling of pulsar noise. Without proper care, mis-specified noise models can lead to false-positive detections. Background estimation using bootstrap methods such as sky scrambles and phase shifts, which use the data to characterize the noise, are therefore important tools for assessing significance. We investigate the ability of current PTA experiments to estimate their background with "quasi-independent" scrambles -- characterized by a statistical "match" below the fiducial value: $|M|<0.1$. We show that sky scrambling is affected by "saturation" after $O(10)$ quasi-independent realizations; subsequent scrambles are no longer quasi-independent. We show phase scrambling saturates after $O(100)$ quasi-independent realizations. With so few independent scrambles, it is difficult to make reliable statements about the $\gtrsim 5 \sigma$ tail of the null distribution of the detection statistic. We discuss various methods by which one may increase the number of independent scrambles. We also consider an alternative approach wherein one re-frames the background estimation problem so that the significance is calculated using statistically dependent scrambles. The resulting $p$-value is in principle well-defined but may be susceptible to failure if assumptions about the data are incorrect.

Abstract:The collection of individually resolvable gravitational wave (GW) events makes up a tiny fraction of all GW signals that reach our detectors, while most lie below the confusion limit and are undetected. Similarly to voices in a crowded room, the collection of unresolved signals gives rise to a background that is well-described via stochastic variables and, hence, referred to as the stochastic GW background (SGWB). In this review, we provide an overview of stochastic GW signals and characterise them based on features of interest such as generation processes and observational properties. We then review the current detection strategies for stochastic backgrounds, offering a ready-to-use manual for stochastic GW searches in real data. In the process, we distinguish between interferometric measurements of GWs, either by ground-based or space-based laser interferometers, and timing-residuals analyses with pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). These detection methods have been applied to real data both by large GW collaborations and smaller research groups, and the most recent and instructive results are reported here. We close this review with an outlook on future observations with third generation detectors, space-based interferometers, and potential noninterferometric detection methods proposed in the literature.
Systematic errors in estimation of gravitational-wave candidate significance

Abstract:We investigate the issue in determining the significance of candidate transient gravitational-wave events in a ground-based interferometer network. Given the presence of non-Gaussian noise artefacts in real data, the noise background must be estimated empirically from the data itself. However, the data also potentially contains signals, thus the background estimate may be overstated due to contributions from signals. It has been proposed to mitigate possible bias by removing single-detector data samples that pass a multi-detector consistency test from the background estimates. We conduct a high-statistics Mock Data Challenge to evaluate the effects of removing such samples, modelling a range of scenarios with plausible detector noise distributions and with a range of plausible foreground astrophysical signal rates. We consider the two different modes: one in which coincident samples are removed, and one in which all samples are retained and used. Three algorithms were operated in both modes, show good consistency with each other; however, discrepancies arise between the results obtained under the "coincidence removal" and "all samples" modes, for false alarm probabilities below a certain value. In most scenarios the median of the false alarm probability (FAP) estimator under the "all samples" mode is consistent with the exact FAP. On the other hand the "coincidence removal" mode is found to be unbiased for the mean of the estimated FAP. While the numerical values at which discrepancies become apparent are specific to the details of our experiment, we believe that the qualitative differences in the behaviour of the median and mean of the FAP estimator have more general validity. On the basis of our study we suggest that the FAP of candidates for the first detection of gravitational waves should be estimated without removing single-detector samples that form coincidences.

Abstract:Astrometry, the precise measurement of star motions, offers an alternative avenue to investigate low-frequency gravitational waves through the spatial deflection of photons, complementing pulsar timing arrays reliant on timing residuals. Upcoming data from Gaia and Roman can not only cross-check pulsar timing array findings but also explore the uncharted frequency range bridging pulsar timing arrays and LISA. We present an analytical framework to evaluate the feasibility of detecting a gravitational wave background, considering measurement noise and the intrinsic variability of the stochastic background. Furthermore, we highlight astrometry's crucial role in uncovering key properties of the gravitational wave background, such as spectral index and chirality, employing information-matrix analysis. Finally, we simulate the emergence of quadrupolar correlations, commonly referred to as the generalized Hellings-Downs curves.

Searches for stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds

Abstract:These lecture notes provide a brief introduction to methods used to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation -- a superposition of gravitational-wave signals that are either too weak or too numerous to individually detect. The focus of these notes is on relevant data analysis techniques, not on the particular astrophysical or cosmological sources that are responsible for producing the background. The lecture notes are divided into two main parts: (i) an overview, consisting of a description of different types of gravitational-wave backgrounds and an introduction to the method of cross-correlating data from multiple detectors, which can be used to extract the signal from the noise; (ii) details, extending the previous discussion to non-trivial detector response, non-trivial overlap functions, and a recently proposed Bayesian method to search for the gravitational-wave background produced by stellar-mass binary black hole mergers throughout the universe. Suggested exercises for the reader are given throughout the text, and compiled in an appendix.

Abstract:We investigate how a stochastic gravitational wave background, produced from a discrete set of astrophysical sources, differs from an idealised model consisting of an isotropic, unpolarised, and Gaussian background. We focus, in particular, on the different signatures produced from these two cases, as observed in a cross-correlation search. We show that averaged over many realisations of an astrophysical background, the cross-correlation measurement of an astrophysical background is identical to that of an idealised background. However, any one realisation of an astrophysical background can produce a different signature. Using a model consisting of an ensemble of binary neutron star coalescences, we quantify the typical difference between the signal from individual realisations of the astrophysical background and the idealised case. For advanced detectors, we find that, using a cross-correlation analysis, astrophysical backgrounds from many discrete sources are probably indistinguishable from an idealised background.

Abstract:Analysis of pulsar timing data have provided evidence for a stochastic gravitational wave background in the nHz frequency band. The most plausible source of such a background is the superposition of signals from millions of supermassive black hole binaries. The standard statistical techniques used to search for such a background and assess its significance make several simplifying assumptions, namely: i) Gaussianity; ii) isotropy; and most often iii) a power-law spectrum. However, a stochastic background from a finite collection of binaries does not exactly satisfy any of these assumptions. To understand the effect of these assumptions, we test standard analysis techniques on a large collection of realistic simulated datasets. The dataset length, observing schedule, and noise levels were chosen to emulate the NANOGrav 15-year dataset. Simulated signals from millions of binaries drawn from models based on the Illustris cosmological hydrodynamical simulation were added to the data. We find that the standard statistical methods perform remarkably well on these simulated datasets, despite their fundamental assumptions not being strictly met. They are able to achieve a confident detection of the background. However, even for a fixed set of astrophysical parameters, different realizations of the universe result in a large variance in the significance and recovered parameters of the background. We also find that the presence of loud individual binaries can bias the spectral recovery of the background if we do not account for them.

Abstract:We propose a non-Gaussianity test for gravitational wave backgrounds by combining data streams of multiple detectors. This simple method allows us to check whether a detected background is "smooth" enough to be consistent with an inflation-type background, or is contaminated by individually undetectable weak burst signals. The proposed test would be quite useful for the Big Bang Observer or DECIGO whose primary target is a background from inflation at 0.1-1Hz where gravitational wave bursts from supernovae of population III stars might become a troublesome foreground.

Abstract:Future searches for a gravitational-wave background using Earth-based gravitational-wave detectors might be impacted by correlated noise sources. A well-known example are the Schumann resonances, which are extensively studied in the context of searches for a gravitational-wave background. Earlier work has shown that a technique termed "gravitational-wave geodesy" can be used to generically differentiate observations of a gravitational-wave background from signals due to correlated terrestrial effects, requiring true observations to be consistent with the known geometry of our detector network. The key result of this test is a Bayes factor between the hypotheses that a candidate signal is astrophysical or terrestrial in origin. Here, we further formalize the geodesy test, mapping distributions of false-alarm and false-acceptance probabilities to quantify the degree with which a given Bayes factor will boost or diminish our confidence in an apparent detection of the gravitational-wave background. To define the false alarm probability of a given Bayes factor, we must have knowledge of our null hypothesis: the space of all possible correlated terrestrial signals. Since we do not have this knowledge, we instead construct a generic space of smooth functions in the frequency domain using Gaussian processes, which we tailor to be conservative. This enables us to use draws from our Gaussian processes as a proxy for all possible nonastrophysical signals. During the O2 observing run, the LIGO and Virgo collaborations observed an SNR=1.25 excess in their search for an isotropic gravitational-wave background. The unresolved stochastic background from compact binary mergers detectable by next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave observatories

Abstract:The next generation of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors will look much deeper into the Universe and have unprecedented sensitivities and low-frequency capabilities. Especially alluring is the possibility of detecting an early-Universe cosmological stochastic background that could provide important insights into the beginnings of our Universe and fundamental physics at extremely high energies. However, even if next-generation detectors are sensitive to cosmological stochastic backgrounds, they will be masked by more dominant astrophysical backgrounds, namely the residual background from the imperfect subtraction of resolvable compact binary coalescences (CBCs) as well as the CBC background from individually unresolvable CBCs. Using our latest knowledge of masses, rates, and delay time distributions, we present a data-driven estimate of the unresolvable CBC background that will be seen by next-generation detectors. Accounting for statistical and systematic errors, this estimate quantifies an important piece in the CBC noise budget for next-generation detectors and can help inform detector design and subtraction algorithms. We compare our results with predictions for backgrounds from several cosmological sources in the literature, finding that the unresolvable background will likely be a significant impediment for many models. This motivates the need for simultaneous inference methods or other statistical techniques to detect early-Universe cosmological backgrounds.

Force distributions in three dimensional compressible granular packs

Abstract:We present an experimental investigation of the probability distribution of normal contact forces, $P(F)$, at the bottom boundary of static three dimensional packings of compressible granular materials. We find that the degree of deformation of individual grains plays a large role in determining the form of this distribution. For small amounts of deformation we find a small peak in $P(F)$ below the mean force with an exponential tail for forces larger than the mean force. As the degree of deformation is increased the peak at the mean force grows in height and the slope of the exponential tail increases.

Abstract:Convincing evidence of a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background has been found by the NANOGrav Collaboration in the 15-year data set. From this signal, we can evaluate the possibility of its source being from the early Universe through the tensor perturbations induced by a massive spin-2 graviton field. We consider a time-dependent model of the minimal theory of massive gravity and find values of the graviton mass, mass cutoff time, and Hubble rate of inflation that amplify the energy spectra of primordial GWs sufficiently to reproduce the signal from the NANOGrav data within 1-3 standard deviation. However, a suppression mechanism for high-frequency modes must be introduced to conservatively obey the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) bound. While there are regions of the parameter space that reproduce the signal, it remains a challenge to simultaneously respect the BBN and cosmic microwave background bounds without making the graviton mass cutoff time too deep into the matter-dominated era. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.063525 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:It is thought that a stochastic background of gravitational waves was produced during the formation of the universe. A great deal could be learned by measuring this Cosmic Gravitational-wave Background (CGB), but detecting the CGB presents a significant technological challenge. The signal strength is expected to be extremely weak, and there will be competition from unresolved astrophysical foregrounds such as white dwarf binaries. Our goal is to identify the most promising approach to detect the CGB. We study the sensitivities that can be reached using both individual, and cross-correlated pairs of space based interferometers. Our main result is a general, coordinate free formalism for calculating the detector response that applies to arbitrary detector configurations. We use this general formalism to identify some promising designs for a GrAvitational Background Interferometer (GABI) mission. Our conclusion is that detecting the CGB is not out of reach.

Abstract:Detecting gravitational wave bursts (characterised by short durations and poorly modelled waveforms) requires to have coincidences between several interferometric detectors in order to reject non-stationary noise events. As the wave amplitude seen in a detector depends on its location with respect to the source direction and as the signal to noise ratio of these bursts are expected to be low, coincidences between antennas may not be so likely. This paper investigates this question from a statistical point of view by using a simple model of a network of detectors; it also estimates the timing precision of a detection in an interferometer which is an important issue for the reconstruction of the source location, based on time delays.
