Abstract:I propose a version of quantum mechanics featuring a discrete and finite number of states that is plausibly a model of the real world. The model is based on standard unitary quantum theory of a closed system with a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Given certain simple conditions on the spectrum of the Hamiltonian, Schrödinger evolution is periodic, and it is straightforward to replace continuous time with a discrete version, with the result that the system only visits a discrete and finite set of state vectors. The biggest challenges to the viability of such a model come from cosmological considerations. The theory may have implications for questions of mathematical realism and finitism.

The continuity equation and its applications in phase space quantum mechanics

Abstract:A quantum phase space version of the continuity equation for systems with internal degrees of freedom is derived. The $1$ -- D Dirac equation is introduced and its phase space counterpart is found. The phase space representation of free motion and of scattering in a nonrelativistic and relativistic case for setups with internal degrees of freedom is discussed and illustrated. Properties of Wigner functions of unbound states are analysed.

Abstract:Quantum discord is viewed as the measure of quantum correlation which can be nonzero even when entanglement in the system is zero. We study two properties of quantum discord: the upper bound and the continuity. We prove the upper bound of quantum discord in terms of the coherent information for any quantum state and discuss the condition for the reachable upper bound. If two states are close to each other, then we find that quantum discord has little change and provides a bound with respect to this small change.

Abstract:Most continuous mathematical formulations arising in science and engineering can only be solved numerically and therefore approximately. We shall always assume that we're dealing with a numerical approximation to the solution. There are two major motivations for studying quantum algorithms and complexity for continuous problems. 1. Are quantum computers more powerful than classical computers for important scientific problems? How much more powerful? 2. Many important scientific and engineering problems have continuous formulations. To answer the first question we must know the classical computational complexity of the problem. Knowing the classical complexity of a continuous problem we obtain the quantum computation speedup if we know the quantum complexity. If we know an upper bound on the quantum complexity through the cost of a particular quantum algorithm then we can obtain a lower bound on the quantum speedup. Regarding the second motivation, in this article we'll report on high-dimensional integration, path integration, Feynman path integration, the smallest eigenvalue of a differential equation, approximation, partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations and gradient estimation. We'll also briefly report on the simulation of quantum systems on a quantum computer.

Abstract:We consider the continuum limit for models of solids that arise in density functional theory and the QM-continuum approximation of such models. Two different versions of QM-continuum approximation are proposed, depending on the level at which the Cauchy-Born rule is used, one at the level of electron density and one at the level of energy. Consistency at the interface between the smooth and the non-smooth regions is analyzed. We show that if the Cauchy-Born rule is used at the level of electron density, then the resulting QM-continuum model is free of the so-called "ghost force" at the interface. We also present dynamic models that bridge naturally the Car-Parrinello method and the QM-continuum approximation.

Abstract:Contrary to the widespread belief, the problem of the emergence of classical mechanics from quantum mechanics is still open. In spite of many results on the $\h \to 0$ asymptotics, it is not yet clear how to explain within standard quantum mechanics the classical motion of macroscopic bodies. In this paper we shall analyze special cases of classical behavior in the framework of a precise formulation of quantum mechanics, Bohmian mechanics, which contains in its own structure the possibility of describing real objects in an observer-independent way.

Abstract:A recent concept in theoretical physics, motivated in string duality and M-theory, is the notion that not all quantum theories arise from quantising a classical system. Also, a given quantum model may possess more than just one classical limit. In view of these developments, we analyse some general properties that quantum mechanics must satisfy, if it is not to be formulated as a quantisation of a given classical mechanics. Instead, our approach to quantum mechanics is modelled on a statement that is close in spirit to the equivalence principle of general relativity, thus bearing a strong resemblance with the equivalence principle of quantum mechanics formulated by Faraggi-Matone.

Abstract:Quantum integrable systems and their classical counterparts are considered. We show that the symplectic structure and invariant tori of the classical system can be deformed by a quantization parameter $\hbar$ to produce a new (classical) integrable system. The new tori selected by the $\hbar$-equidistance rule represent the spectrum of the quantum system up to $O(\hbar^\infty)$ and are invariant under quantum dynamics in the long-time range $O(\hbar^{-\infty})$. The quantum diffusion over the deformed tori is described. The analytic apparatus uses quantum action-angle coordinates explicitly constructed by an $\hbar$-deformation of the classical action-angles.

It exhibits a discrete model for the free scalar field on the real line, adapting the treatment from the book of Costello--Gwilliam to the discrete setting.

Abstract:The universality of quantum mechanics — its applicability to physical systems of quite different nature and scales — indicates that quantum behavior can be a manifestation of general mathematical properties of systems containing indistinguishable elements, i.e., elements lying on the same orbit of some symmetry group. In this paper, we demonstrate that quantum behavior arises naturally in systems with finitely many elements connected by nontrivial symmetry groups. The “finite” approach allows one to see the peculiarities of a quantum description more distinctly without the need for concepts like “wave function collapse,” “Everett’s multiverses,” etc. In particular, under the finiteness assumption, any quantum dynamics is reduced to a simple permutation dynamics. The advantage of finite quantum models is that they can be studied constructively by means of computer algebra and computational group theory methods. Bibliography: 12 titles.

Abstract:This monograph introduces the basic concepts of the theory of causal fermion systems, a recent approach to the description of fundamental physics. The theory yields quantum mechanics, general relativity and quantum field theory as limiting cases and is therefore a candidate for a unified physical theory. From the mathematical perspective, causal fermion systems provide a general framework for describing and analyzing non-smooth geometries and "quantum geometries." The dynamics is described by a novel variational principle, called the causal action principle. In addition to the basics, the book provides all the necessary mathematical background and explains how the causal action principle gives rise to the interactions of the standard model plus gravity on the level of second-quantized fermionic fields coupled to classical bosonic fields. The focus is on getting a mathematically sound connection between causal fermion systems and physical systems in Minkowski space. The book is intended for graduate students entering the field, and is furthermore a valuable reference work for researchers in quantum field theory and quantum gravity.

Modular invariance as completeness

Abstract:We review the physical meaning of modular invariance for unitary conformal quantum field theories in d=2. For QFT models, while T invariance is necessary for locality, S invariance is not mandatory. S invariance is a form of completeness of the theory that has a precise meaning as Haag duality for arbitrary multi-interval regions. We present a mathematical proof as well as derive this result from a physical standpoint using Renyi entropies and the replica trick. For rational CFT's, the failure of modular invariance or Haag duality can be measured by an index, related to the quantum dimensions of the model. We show how to compute this index from the modular transformation matrices. The index also appears in a limit of the Renyi mutual informations. Cases of infinite index are briefly discussed. Part of the argument can be extended to higher dimensions, where the lack of completeness can also be diagnosed using the CFT data through the thermal partition function and measured by an index.

From Classical to Quantum: Uniform Continuity Bounds on Entropies in Infinite Dimensions

Abstract:We prove a variety of new and refined uniform continuity bounds for entropies of both classical random variables on an infinite state space and of quantum states of infinite-dimensional systems. We obtain the first tight continuity estimate on the Shannon entropy of random variables with a countably infinite alphabet. The proof relies on a new mean-constrained Fano-type inequality and the notion of maximal coupling of random variables. We then employ this classical result to derive the first tight energy-constrained continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy of states of infinite-dimensional quantum systems, when the Hamiltonian is the number operator, which is arguably the most relevant Hamiltonian in the study of infinite-dimensional quantum systems in the context of quantum information theory. The above scheme works only for Shannon- and von Neumann entropies. Hence, to deal with more general entropies, e.g. $\alpha$-Rényi and $\alpha$-Tsallis entropies, with $\alpha \in (0,1)$, for which continuity bounds are known only for finite-dimensional systems, we develop a novel approximation scheme which relies on recent results on operator Hölder continuous functions and the equivalence of all Schatten norms in special spectral subspaces of the Hamiltonian. This approach is, as we show, motivated by continuity bounds for $\alpha$-Rényi and $\alpha$-Tsallis entropies of random variables that follow from the Hölder continuity of the entropy functionals. Bounds for $\alpha>1$ are provided, too. Finally, we settle an open problem on related approximation questions posed in the recent works by Shirokov on the so-called Finite-dimensional Approximation (FA) property.

Abstract:We explore finite-field frameworks for quantum theory and quantum computation. The simplest theory, defined over unrestricted finite fields, is unnaturally strong. A second framework employs only finite fields with no solution to x^2+1=0, and thus permits an elegant complex representation of the extended field by adjoining i=\sqrt{-1}. Quantum theories over these fields recover much of the structure of conventional quantum theory except for the condition that vanishing inner products arise only from null states; unnaturally strong computational power may still occur. Finally, we are led to consider one more framework, with further restrictions on the finite fields, that recovers a local transitive order and a locally-consistent notion of inner product with a new notion of cardinal probability. In this framework, conventional quantum mechanics and quantum computation emerge locally (though not globally) as the size of the underlying field increases. Interestingly, the framework allows one to choose separate finite fields for system description and for measurement: the size of the first field quantifies the resources needed to describe the system and the size of the second quantifies the resources used by the observer. This resource-based perspective potentially provides insights into quantitative measures for actual computational power, the complexity of quantum system definition and evolution, and the independent question of the cost of the measurement process.

Abstract:The standard notion of a classical limit, represented schematically by $\hbar\rightarrow 0$, provides a method for approximating a quantum system by a classical one. In this work we explain why the standard classical limit fails when applied to subsystems, and show how one may resolve this by explicitly modelling the decoherence of a subsystem by its environment. Denoting the decoherence time $\tau$, we demonstrate that a double scaling limit in which $\hbar \rightarrow 0$ and $\tau \rightarrow 0$ such that the ratio $E_f =\hbar /\tau$ remains fixed leads to an irreversible open-system evolution with well-defined classical and quantum subsystems. The main technical result is showing that, for arbitrary Hamiltonians, the generators of partial versions of the Wigner, Husimi and Glauber-Sudarshan quasiprobability distributions may all be mapped in the above double scaling limit to the same completely-positive classical-quantum generator. This provides a regime in which one can study effective and consistent classical-quantum dynamics.

Abstract:The question of whether given density operators for subsystems of a multipartite quantum system are compatible to one common total density operator is known as the quantum marginal problem. We briefly review the solution of a subclass of such problems found just recently. In particular, this provides the solution of the $1$-body $N$-representability problem. Its solution, the so-called generalized Pauli constraints, restrict the set of mathematically possible fermionic occupation numbers significantly, and strengthens Pauli's exclusion principle. Moreover, we review the study of a concrete physical model of interacting fermions confined to a harmonic trap. There, we found occupation numbers close, but not exactly on the boundary of the allowed region. This new effect of quasipinning is physically relevant since it corresponds to a simplified structure of the corresponding $N$-fermion quantum state.

Abstract:We suggest a somewhat non-standard view on a set of curious, paradoxical from the standpoint of simple classical physics and everyday experience phenomena. There are the quantisation (discrete set of values) of the observables (e.g., energy, momentum, angular momentum); forbidden simultaneous measurements of the observables in the most cases (e.g., of a coordinate and momentum, of angular momentum projections on difference axis); counter-intuitive relations on the simultaneously measurable quantities (e.g., the famous expression for the square momentum $l(l+1)$ with the maximal projection $l$). These and other paradoxes are traditionally related to "purely quantum" phenomenon, i.e., having no analogue in the "classical world" ones. However, there are deep analogies between classical and "quantum" worlds, as soon as the quantum technique is applied to the classical phenomenon. We follow these analogies with the examples of relatively simple and well known models of classical physics, such as a simplified model of light transition through the media, a system of electric charges close to each other and far from the observer; the specific of motion in the Coulomb/Newtonian field. This text can be considered as a mini-course addressed to higher school and undergraduate students who are interested in basics of quantum mechanics, but are not yet ready for systematic study of standard courses. The text may be also useful to those who supervise such students.

Abstract:The equivalence postulate approach to quantum mechanics aims to formulate quantum mechanics from a fundamental geometrical principle. Underlying the formulation there exists a basic cocycle condition which is invariant under $D$--dimensional Möbius transformations with respect to the Euclidean or Minkowski metrics. The invariance under global Möbius transformations implies that spatial space is compact. Furthermore, it implies energy quantisation and undefinability of quantum trajectories without assuming any prior interpretation of the wave function. The approach may be viewed as conventional quantum mechanics with the caveat that spatial space is compact, as dictated by the Möbius symmetry, with the classical limit corresponding to the decompactification limit. Correspondingly, there exists a finite length scale in the formalism and consequently an intrinsic regularisation scheme. Evidence for the compactness of space may exist in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Abstract:To simulate quantum systems on classical or quantum computers, the continuous observables (e.g., coordinate and momentum or energy and time) must be reduced to discrete ones. In this paper, we consider the continuous observables represented in the positional systems as power series in the radix multiplied over the summands ("digits"), which turn out to be Hermitian operators with discrete spectrum. We investigate the obtained quantum mechanical operators of digits, the commutation relations between them, and the effects of the choice of a numeral system on lattices and representations. Renormalizations of diverging sums naturally occur in constructing the digital representation.

Abstract:While ultimately they are described by quantum mechanics, macroscopic mechanical systems are nevertheless observed to follow the trajectories predicted by classical mechanics. Hence, in the regime defining macroscopic physics, the trajectories of the correct classical motion must emerge from quantum mechanics, a process referred to as the quantum to classical transition. Extending previous work [Bhattacharya, Habib, and Jacobs, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 4852 (2000)], here we elucidate this transition in some detail, showing that once the measurement processes that affect all macroscopic systems are taken into account, quantum mechanics indeed predicts the emergence of classical motion. We derive inequalities that describe the parameter regime in which classical motion is obtained, and provide numerical examples. We also demonstrate two further important properties of the classical limit: first, that multiple observers all agree on the motion of an object, and second, that classical statistical inference may be used to correctly track the classical motion.
