Abstract:Objective To study fungal infections among AIDS patients in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region and predominant strains isolated from them and test their in vitro sensitivity to antifungal agents so as to provide scientific evidence for early clinical diagnosis and rational use of drugs and to indentify drug resistance in the region. Methods Fungi were cultivated conventionally by taking oral, respiratory and uro-genital samples from AIDS patients and the fungal cultures were identified with a chromogenic medium ( CHROM agar) ; in vitro sensitivity of 50 isolated strains to antifungal agents, including 5-flucytosine, fluconazole, amphotericin, itraoconazole and vorioconazole was tested using yeast-like fungi ATBTM FUNGUS 3 Test Kit. Results Among 100 isolated strains,97 were Candida spp,of which 85 were Candida albicans,6 were Candida krusei, 2 were Candida tropicalis,1 was Candida glabrata , 2 were Aspergillus and 1 was Rhizopus. Conclusion Candida albicans remains the dominant fungal strain among AIDS patients in the Xinjiang Region. Among the antifungal agents 5-fluorocytosine and amphotericin B are relatively sensitive and conazole agents are resistant to various degrees.
