Abstract:A compact photoacoustic gas sensor based on a quartz tuning fork and fiber-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser for detection of trace gas at atmospheric pressure has been developed. The sensor performance was evaluated by detection of water vapor in ambient air at normal atmospheric pressure. A normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 1.68×10 −8 cm −1 W/Hz 1/2 was achieved. Influence of different acoustic microresonators and sample pressure on the sensor performance, and the characterization of the sensor response time were investigated. Approaches to improve the current sensor performance are discussed.

Abstract:A novel fiber-ring laser intra-cavity quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (FLI-QEPAS) gas sensor utilizing wavelength scanning Q-switched technique is reported for acetylene detection. The system uses erbium doped fiber as the gain medium for laser generation and a custom-made fiber Bragg grating attached to a piezoelectric transducer for wavelength scanning to cover the C2H2 absorption line at 1531.58 nm. A standard quartz tuning fork (QTF) operating at 32.76 kHz is placed inside the fiber-ring cavity to fully utilize intra-cavity optical power, realizing an ultra-short absorption path of 10 mm. Acousto-optic Q-switched working mode is employed to enable the fiber-ring laser working in high frequency enough for standard QTF excitation, up to similar or equal to 3 W intra-cavity peak power is achieved with 650 mW pump power at 980 nm. In acetylene detection experiments, the system realizes a noise equivalent concentration of 26 ppbv at 50 ms integration time, and Allan deviation shows the minimum detection limit can be improved to 2.8 ppbv at 51 s integration time. A linear dynamic range up to 10,000 ppmv is validated and the stability performance is also analyzed.

Abstract:We proposed a new method for gas detection in photoacoustic spectroscopy based on acousto-optic Q-switched fiber laser by merging a transmission PAS cell (resonant frequency f₀ = 5.3 kHz) inside the fiber laser cavity. The Q-switching was achieved by an acousto-optic modulator, achieving a peak pulse power of ~679 mW in the case of the acousto-optic modulation signal with an optimized duty ratio of 10%. We used a custom-made fiber Bragg grating with a central wavelength of 1530.37 nm (the absorption peak of C₂H₂) to select the laser wavelength. The system achieved a linear response (R² = 0.9941) in a concentration range from 400 to 7000 ppmv, and the minimum detection limit compared to that of a conventional intensity modulation system was enhanced by 94.2 times.

Abstract:We demonstrated a novel trace gas sensing method based on fiber-ring laser intracavity photoacoustic spectroscopy. This spectroscopic technique is a merging of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) with a fiber-ring cavity for sensitive and all-fiber gas detection. A transmission-type PAS gas cell (resonant frequency f0=2.68 kHz) was placed inside the fiber-ring laser to fully utilize the intracavity laser power. The PAS signal was excited by modulating the laser wavelength at f0/2 using a custom-made fiber Bragg grating-based modulator. We used this spectroscopic technique to detect acetylene (C2H2) at 1531.6 nm as a proof of principle. With a low Q-factor (4.9) of the PAS cell, our sensor achieved a good linear response (R2=0.996) to C2H2 concentration and a minimum detection limit of 390 ppbv at 2-s response time.

Abstract:Fiber laser intracavity gas sensor has advantages of high sensitivity and wide wavelength coverage. We present our recent research progress on intracavity gas sensor including the modular structure design and the general procedure of signal processing. The methods of wavelength-sweep-based multiline averaging and attenuator-based cavity loss increment are used to enhance the gas sensor's stability and sensitivity respectively. The standard deviation of acetylene concentration measurement is reduced by half using the proposed enhancement method and the improved intracavity concentration sensitivity is about 60 times larger than the single-pass external-cavity sensitivity.

Abstract:An ultra compact all-fiber quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor using quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a low resonance frequency of 30.72 kHz was demonstrated. Such a sensor architecture has the advantages of easier optical alignment, lower insertion loss, lower cost, and more compact compared with a conventional QEPAS sensor using discrete optical components for laser delivery and coupling to the QTF. A fiber beam splitter and three QTFs were employed to perform multi-point detection and demonstrated the potential of spatially resolved measurements.

Abstract:We present an all-fiber-based laser gas analyzer (LGA) employing quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and a side-polished fiber (SPF). The LGA comprises a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with 0.8 mm prong spacing, two acoustic micro-resonators (mR) located on either side of the prong spacing, and a single-mode fiber containing a 17 mm polished section passing through both mRs and QTF. The SPF polished face is positioned to enable the evanescent wave (EW) to create a photoacoustic wave and excite the fundamental flexural mode of the QTF. Sensor performance was demonstrated using methane in nitrogen gas mixtures, with CH 4 mixing ratios ranging from 75 ppmv to 1% (by volume), measured with an accumulation time of 300 ms, and a minimum detection limit of 34 ppmv subsequently determined. The EW-QEPAS sensor is ideal for miniaturization, as it does not contain any free-space optics and is suitable for gas sensing in harsh environments and where mobility is required.

Abstract:A quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor, employing an erbium-doped fiber amplified laser source and a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with its two prongs spaced similar to 800 mu m apart, is reported. The sensor employs an acoustic micro-resonator (AmR) which is assembled in an "on-beam" QEPAS configuration. Both length and vertical position of the AmR are optimized in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, significantly improving the QEPAS detection sensitivity by a factor of similar to 40, compared to the case of a sensor using a bare custom QTF. The fiber-amplifier-enhanced QEPAS sensor is applied to H2S trace gas detection, reaching a sensitivity of similar to 890 ppb at 1 s integration time, similar to those obtained with a power-enhanced QEPAS sensor equipped with a standard QTF, but with the advantages of easy optical alignment, simple installation, and long-term stability. Abstract:An optical gas sensing technique based on in-plane quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (IP-QEPAS) is reported. In IP-QEPAS, the laser beam is aligned in the plane of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) to increase the interaction area between the acoustic wavefront and the QTF. A custom T-shaped QTF with a prong length of 9.4 mm and a resonance frequency of 9.38 kHz was designed and employed in the IP-QEPAS sensor. For comparison, the traditional QEPAS sensor in which the laser beam is perpendicular to the QTF plane (PP-QEPAS) is investigated with the same operating conditions. Theoretical calculations of strain and displacement of the QTF prong were performed to support the advantage of using the IP-QEPAS technique. By selecting water vapor as the gas target, the IP-QEPAS sensor results in a signal more than 40 times higher than that measured with the PP-QEPAS configuration, confirming the potential of this approach.

Abstract:A novel quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) trace gas detection scheme is reported in this paper. A cylindrical lens was employed for near-infrared laser focusing. The laser beam was shaped as a planar line laser between the gap of the quartz tuning fork (QTF) prongs. Compared with a spherical lens-based QEPAS sensor, the cylindrical lens-based QEPAS sensor has the advantages of easier laser beam alignment and a reduction of stringent stability requirements. Therefore, the reported approach is useful in long-term and continuous sensor operation.

Abstract:In a conventional system of quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS), the size of block-like optical collimation focusing lens group is difficult to reduce, and the structural stability is poor, which makes it hard to adapt itself to some special conditions, such as narrow space and vibrating circumstance. Based on this situation, in this research the fiber evanescent wave technique is combined with QEPAS. Therefore, trace gas detection for acetylene (C2H2) based on an all-fiber structural QEPAS system is developed. To obtain the characteristics of fiber evanescent wave, the optical distribution of micro structural fiber is simulated and the evanescent wave power ratio is calculated based on the COMSOL Multiphysics software. In order to increase the QEPAS 2f signal amplitude, the optical path between fiber taper and quartz tuning fork (QTF) and the laser wavelength modulation depth are optimized. In addition, two kinds of QTFs with different resonant frequencies are optimized. Finally, a QTF with a lower resonant frequency of 30.720 kHz is adopted as the acoustic wave transducer, and a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 6.2510-4 (volume fraction) is obtained with a laser wavelength modulation depth of 0.24 cm-1. To investigate the evanescent wave power of micro structural fiber, the fiber taper diameter is measured by a scanning electron microscope. Subsequently, by combining the diameter of fiber taper with the theoretical calculation results, we determine an evanescent wave power of 455.9 W, and the normalization of noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) which indicates the sensor sensitivity is 4.1810-7 cm-1WHz-1/2.

Abstract:We report the development of swept cavity-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy using a quartz tuning fork for ultra-sensitive and high-resolution molecular spectroscopy. By using a quantum cascade laser (QCL) as the mid-infrared light source, a dual-feedback Pound–Drever–Hall locking method is proposed to lock the QCL frequency to a continuously swept optical cavity. By placing an off-beam quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy module in a 48-mm Fabry–Pérot cavity, we are able to achieve ultra-sensitive gas detection based on the doubly resonant photoacoustic effect. As a proof-of-concept, we use a distributed feedback QCL to exploit the CO line at 2190.02 cm−1, where the cavity-locked QCL is scanned over a spectral range of 10 GHz with a spectral resolution of ∼3 MHz. With the incident laser power of 7.3 mW, the optical cavity (finesse 1931) builds up the intracavity power beyond 3 W. Our photoacoustic spectrometer achieves the minimum detection limit of 375 part-per-trillion (ppt) at the averaging time of 150 s and the normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 1.27 × 10−9 Wcm−1 Hz−1/2.
Intra-cavity spectroscopy using amplified spontaneous emission in fiber lasers

Abstract:Fiber laser sources offer interesting possibilities for gas sensors since they can operate over an extended wavelength range, encompassing the near-IR absorption lines of a number of important gases but a major problem is that overtone absorption lines of gases in the near-IR are relatively weak. In order to enhance sensitivity, we present here a simple method of intra-cavity absorption spectroscopy (ICAS) which makes use of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) already present within a fiber laser cavity. The ASE also provides a convenient broadband source for the simultaneous interrogation of several gases within the gain-bandwidth of the fiber laser. The key principle is based on adjusting the cavity attenuation to select an appropriate inversion level where the fiber gain curve is flat. Under this condition, the ASE undergoes multiple circulations within the fiber laser cavity, enhancing the effective path-length of a gas cell placed within the laser cavity. A theoretical model of system operation is given and we have experimentally demonstrated the principle of operation with acetylene and carbon dioxide using a simple erbium fiber laser system containing a 6 cm path-length, fiber coupled, intra-cavity, micro-optic gas cell. We have experimentally simultaneously observed 16 absorption lines for 1% acetylene gas in the 1530 nm region and detected the very weak carbon dioxide lines in this same wavelength region. A path length enhancement of ∼500 in the linear regime has been demonstrated transforming the 6 cm micro-optic cell into an effective path length of ∼30 m. We also demonstrate how the enhancement factor may be calibrated by use of a simple fiber-optic interferometer. Apart from the OSA, all components are inexpensive and the system is very simple to construct and operate. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) system based on acousto-optic Q-switched fiber laser for C2H2 detection was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The gas sensor system coupled an erbium-doped fiber laser with a custom-made transmission quartz tuning fork structure. An acousto-optic modulator was used to perform amplitude modulation at a modulation frequency of 32.76 kHz and the system achieved a maximum intra-cavity peak pulse power of 6 W. The system response relationship between the peak pulse power and QEPAS signals confirms that saturation does not occur with the laser power less than 6 W. Preliminary measurements of the sensor response to C2H2 concentrations have been made with pure N-2 as a carrier gas, and the experimental results showed the relationship between QEPAS signal amplitude and the C2H2 concentrations have a good linearity (R-square = 0.99918). Finally, trace gas measurements have been assessed and a minimum detection limit of 101 pptv within 20 ms integration time for C2H2 has been achieved. This paper provides a valuable gas sensor for practical project application.

Abstract:Laser spectroscopy based techniques have the advantages of high sensitivities, high selectivities, non-invasiveness and in situ, real-time observations. They are widely used in numerous fields, such as environmental monitoring, life science, medical diagnostics, manned space flight, and planetary exploration. Owing to the merits of low cost, compact volume and strong environment adaptability, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based sensing is an important laser spectroscopy-based method of detecting the trace gas, which was invented in 2002. Detection sensitivity is a key parameter for gas sensors because it determines their real applications. In this paper, focusing on the detection sensitivity, the common methods for QEPAS are summarized. High power laser including amplified diode laser by erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and quantum cascade laser are used to improve the excitation intensity of acoustic wave. The absorption line of gas molecules located at the fundamental bands of mid-infrared region is adopted to increase the laser absorption strength. Micro-resonator is employed to enhance the generated acoustic pressure by forming a standing wave cavity. Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with low resonant frequency are used to increase the accumulation time of acoustic energy in itself. Multi-pass strategy is utilized to amplify the action length between laser beam and target gas in the prongs of QTF. The advantages and disadvantages of the above methods are discussed respectively. For the issues in real applications, the all-fiber strucure in near-infared region and mid-infrared region and miniaturization using three-dimensional(3D) printing technique for QEPAS sensor are summarized. A QEPAS technique based multi-gas sensor is used to quantify the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) for post-fire cleanup aboard spacecraft, which is taken for example for the real application.Finally, the methods of further improving the sensitivity of QEPAS sensor are proposed.

Abstract:Detection of dissolved gases in oceans is critically needed for global carbon cycle investigation. However, most in situ optical detection techniques, as far as we know, have restricted measurement efficiency due to large gas consumption. Herein, we develop a sub-mL photoacoustic gas sensor with a simple configuration. A single-mode fiber directly guides the incident laser into the photoacoustic cell without any other free-space optics. Thus, a reduced inner size of 12 mm × 6 mm × 4 mm enables the effective detection of limited dissolved gas. We employ methane (CH4) as an example to demonstrate its sensing performance. The sensor achieves a good linear response with an R-square value of 0.9989 and a minimum detection limit of 1.1 ppmv, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 7.75 × 10−8 W·cm−1·Hz−1/2.

Abstract:A sensitive trace gas sensor platform based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) is reported. A 1.395 μm continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback pigtailed diode laser was used as the excitation source and H2O was selected as the target analyte. Two kinds of quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a resonant frequency (f0) of 30.72 kHz and 38 kHz were employed for the first time as an acoustic wave transducer, respectively for QEPAS instead of a standard QTF with a f0 of 32.768 kHz. The QEPAS sensor performance using the three different QTFs was experimentally investigated and theoretically analyzed. A minimum detection limit of 5.9 ppmv and 4.3 ppmv was achieved for f0 of 32.768 kHz and 30.72 kHz, respectively.

Abstract:An innovative trace gas-sensing technique utilizing a single quartz crystal tuning fork (QCTF) based on a photoelectric detector and dual-frequency modulation technique was demonstrated for the first time for simultaneous multi-species detection. Instead of traditional semiconductor detectors and lock-in amplifier, we utilized the piezoelectric effect and resonant effect of the QCTF to measure the light intensity. A fast signal analysis method based on fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm is proposed for overlapping signal extraction. To explore the capabilities of this technique, a gas-sensing system based on two lasers having center emission wavelength of 1.653 µm (a DFB laser diode in the near-IR) and 7.66 µm (an EC QCL in the mid-IR) is successfully demonstrated for simultaneous CH4 spectroscopy measurements. The results indicate a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficients of 1.33×10−9 cm−1W·Hz−1/2 at 1.653 µm and 2.20×10−10 cm−1W·Hz−1/2 at 7.66 µm, were achieved. This proposed sensor architecture has the advantages of easier optical alignment, lower cost, and a compactness compared to the design of a conventional TDLAS sensor using multiple semiconductor detectors for laser signal collection. The proposed technique can also be expanded to common QEPAS technique with multi-frequency modulation for multiple species detection simultaneously.
