Abstract:—Image inpainting is widely used in the applications of consumer electronics, such as image restoration and completion, object removal, image editing and enhancement. However, image inpainting for large or irregular holes is still a challenging task. Multi-grained features, understood as the combination of global structures and multi-scale local textures, should be synthesized in a way that considers the local and the global semantic context of image structures. In this work, we propose a novel Multi-Grained Dilation Network (MGD-Net) to capture multi-grained information and complete hole regions with semantically and visually plausible contents. Specifically, we design a Multi-Grained Residual (MGR) block considering hybrid parallel branches to extract hierarchical features. The branches with different dilation rates employ a co-prime principle to avoid gridding artifacts. The multi-grained features extracted by different branches are fused with adaptive weights to enforce “deeper semantic context” that is aware of multi-grain relationships. Further, we introduce a Channel Adaptive Shuffling (CAS) block to effectively decode high-level features back to image space, which shuffles the inner channels with learning-capable filters and adaptive channel weights. Experiments on three benchmark datasets (Paris StreetView, CelebA-HQ, and Places2) demonstrate that MGD-Net can synthesize globally consistent structures and refine well-structured textures, outperforming state-of-the-art methods.
