Abstract:Tungsten (W) is an emerging contaminant because of its potential toxicity to humans, and biochar (BC) is widely used for soil heavy metal remediation. However, W-biochar-plant interactions remain unknown. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of rice-husk BC on W uptake by lettuce. Different levels of BC (0%, 1%, 2% and 5% w/w) were incorporated into the soil and incubated for 60 days. The result shows that BC application immobilized W in soil, and transformed acid extractable fraction and reducible fraction to residual fraction with unstudied mechanism. Meanwhile, BC application increased the shoot height, root length, biomass, and chlorophyll of lettuce compared with control treatment. As compared to control, the accumulation of W in shoot and root was decreased, and the lowest translocation factor (root to shoot) was observed in 5% BC treatment. The results suggested that the main profit of BC to reduce mobilizing of W to proximal water. Besides, the application of BC was effective in W immobilization and reducing uptake to lettuce.

Abstract:As the product of thermal degradation of organic materials, biochar is considered as a potential material for environmental pollution control and ecological remediation. It has been reported that with the properties of multi?pores, large specific surface area, and abundant functional groups, biochar can sequester carbon, immobilize soil contaminants, and improve soil texture, confirming the important role of biochar in soil pollution control and remediation from the physico?chemistry aspect. However, studies on the effects and long?time functions of biochar on soil microbe have just started. This paper offers the information on the effects of biochar on soil microorganisms in recent years both at home and abroad. The altered soil physico?chemical properties, either in terms of an altered resource store (e.g., available C, nutrients, water), or shifts in abiotic factors (e.g., pH, CEC) may result in changes to environmental soil, in terms of increased growth and reproduction of soil bacteria and fungi, causing the changes of the soil microbial community structure and function. Although the advantages of biochar application are obvious, in order to realize large?scale application research on biochar dosage, interaction mechanism between biochar?microorganisms? contaminants, long?term effects of biochar to soil microorganisms and the nutrient cycle need to be investigated systematically.

Abstract:The differing chemical properties of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) make co-remediation in soil systems a major challenge. This study aimed to gain a mechanistic understanding of how two contrasting biochars (poultry litter and sugar-gum wood) impacted the potential bioavailability of As and Cd in soil matrix varying in initial pH (4.6, 5.7, 6.4, 7.1 and 7.4). The application of poultry-litter biochar significantly increased potential bioavailability of As from 11 to 58 mg kg−1 across all soil pH while the potential bioavailability of Cd was decreased from 15 to 2 mg kg−1 at pH ≤ 6.4. Biochar derived from sugar-gum wood decreased bioavailable As from 11 to 8 mg kg−1 and 14 to 12 mg kg−1 in soils with pH 4.6 and 5.7, respectively, while increased it from 14 to 31 mg kg−1 at pH ≥ 6.4. Biochars transformed the residual fraction of As into the exchangeable fraction but the reverse was true for Cd. Biochar application changed the microbial respiration with contrasting dynamic patterns throughout the 30-d incubation. Soil respiration and microbial biomass C responded more quickly in low-pH than high-pH soils due to low As bioavailability at low pH. These new findings provide strong evidence regarding how contrasting biochars control the mobility of As and Cd over a wide range of soil pH within the same soil matrix.
Effects of Biochar on the Transformation and Earthworm Bioaccumulation of Organic Pollutants in Soil

Abstract:Little is known about the effects of biochar on the fate and behavior of micropollutants in soil, especially in the presence of soil macrofauna. Using a 14C-tracer, we studied the fate of 2,4-dichlorophenol and phenanthrene, after 30 days in soil in the presence of a biochar (0-5%, dry weight) produced from China fir at 400 °C and/or the earthworm Metaphire guillelmi. Application of the biochar significantly reduced the degradation and mineralization of both pollutants and strongly increased the accumulation of their metabolites in soil. The earthworm had no significant effects on the degradation of parent molecules of the pollutants but it significantly reduced the mineralization of the pollutants independent of the presence of the biochar. Although at an application rate of <1% the biochar strongly sorbed both pollutants, it did not significantly decrease the bioaccumulation of free dichlorophenol and phenanthrene and their metabolites by the earthworm. Our results demonstrate the complex effects of biochar on the fate, transformation, and earthworm bioaccumulation of organic pollutants in soil. They show that biochar application may not be an appropriate strategy for treating soil contaminated with hydrophobic organic pollutants and underline the importance of soil-feeding earthworms in risk assessments of biochar effects on soil remediation.

Abstract:Livestock and poultry manure containing high levels of copper and zinc have led to contamination of farmland and products which could have an impact on human health. Biochar is an inexpensive and efficient heavy metal absorbent. In the present study, we have used biochar to mitigate the effects of heavy metals on the growth of wheat seedlings. The study showed that the effects of heavy metals on wheat seedlings growth were mitigated by increasing exposure to biochar. Compared to the control group, the germination potential, germination rate, germination index and vigor index of wheat seedlings with supplemented biochar increased significantly. Moreover, the specific activity of catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase decreased and chlorophyll contents increased, which promote wheat growth and suggests that the addition of biochar could reduce the effects of heavy metals on wheat seedlings.

Abstract:The potential effects of combining biochar with hyperaccumulator plants on heavy metal stabilization and uptake in Cd and Pb-contaminated soils have received limited attention. This study used biochar (BC) at levels ranging from 0 to 40 t ha-1 as soil amendments in Cd and Pb contaminated rice paddy soil. Biochar significantly decreased soil bioavailable Cd and Pb concentrations 6.7 to 16.6% and 10.6 to 39.7%, respectively, compared to the control. The shoot and root Cd concentrations in Arabidopsis helleri increased significantly by 33.5% and 133.1%, respectively, in the C3 treatment compared to the control. Similarly, shoot Pb concentrations showed a 57.5% increase compared to the control, but no significant changes were observed in root Pb concentrations. The Arabidopsis helleri bioconcentration factor (BCF) saw an increase of up to 40.5% for Cd and 57.8% for Pb with the C3 treatment. Conversely, the Cd translocation factor (TF) decreased 42.8 to 49.1%, while the Pb TF increased 32.8 to 96.6% with biochar application. The majority of Arabidopsis helleri-biochar Cd and Pb was found in the B3 fraction (organic fraction), constituting over 50%, and even over 80% for Cd. The Arabidopsis helleri-biochar primarily contained organic char binding Cd and exhibited slow-release characteristics.
Influence of Biochar and Soil Properties on Soil and Plant Tissue Concentrations of Cd and Pb: A Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:The application of biochar to soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) has received particular attention due to its ability to reduce PTE uptake by the plants. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to identify Cd and Pb concentrations in plant shoots and roots in response to biochar application and soil properties. We collected data from 65 peer-reviewed journal articles published from 2009 to 2020 in which 66% of manuscripts were published from 2015 to 2020. The data were processed using OpenMEE software. The results pinpointed that addition of biochar to soil caused a significant decrease in shoot and root Cd and Pb concentrations as compared to untreated soils with biochar (control), and the reduction rate was affected by plant types and both biochar and soil properties. The biochar size less than 2 mm, biochar pH higher than 10, pyrolysis temperature of 401-600 degrees C, and the application rate higher than 2% appeared to be effective in reducing shoot and root Cd and Pb concentration. Soil properties such as pH, SOC, and texture influenced the efficiency of biochar for reducing plant Cd and Pb uptake. Biochar application increased SOC (54.3%), CEC (48.0%), pH (0.08), and EC (59.4%), and reduced soil extractable Cd (42.1%) and Pb (47.1%) concentration in comparison to control. A detailed study on the rhizosphere chemistry and uptake mechanism will help to underpin the biochar application rates and their efficiency reducing PTE mobility and plant uptake. Abstract:A 6 weeks pot culture experiment was carried out to investigate the stabilization effects of a modified biochar (BCM) on metals in contaminated soil and the uptake of these metals by wheat seedlings. The results showed that the application of BCM significantly increased the soil fertility, the biomass of wheat seedling roots increased by more than 50%, and soil dehydrogenase (DHA) and catalase (CAT) activities increased by 369.23% and 12.61%, respectively. In addition, with the application of BCM, the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extractable (DTPA-extractable) Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in soil were reduced from 2.34 to 0.38 mg/kg, from 49.27 to 25.65 mg/kg, from 3.55 mg/kg to below the detection limit and from 4.05 to 3.55 mg/kg, respectively. Correspondingly, the uptake of these metals in wheat roots and shoots decreased by 62.43% and 79.83% for Cd, 73.21% and 66.32% for Pb, 57.98% and 68.92% for Cu, and 40.42% and 43.66% for Zn. Furthermore, BCM application decreased the abundance and alpha diversity of soil bacteria and changed the soil bacterial community structure dramatically. Overall, BCM has great potential for the remediation of metal-contaminated soils, but its long-term impact on soil metals and biota need further research.

Abstract:This experiment explored the side effect of biochar application on the availability and distribution of the soil microelement copper (Cu) in cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil and its uptake in rice tissues. Biochar was added at 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 t ha−1 on topsoil. Results observed that both the concentration of available Cu in the topsoil and subsoil layer decreased by 16.3%–28.9% and 7.5%–59.3%, respectively, after biochar application. The Cu concentration in the < 0.053 mm and 1–2 mm soil aggregates increased as biochar application rate increased. Increasing application rate of biochar reduced the proportion of exchangeable Cu, carbonate bound Cu, and Fe/Mn oxide Cu fraction in the soil profile. However, the fraction of organic bound and residual Cu increased by 5.0%–178.4% and 7.0%–15.6%, respectively. Biochar could immobilize microelement Cu in the soil profile and limit Cu uptake by rice.
Apricot shell- and apple tree-derived biochar affect the fractionation and bioavailability of Zn and Cd as well as the microbial activity in smelter contaminated soil

Abstract:The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of apricot shell-derived biochar (ASB) and apple tree-derived biochar (ATB) on soil properties, plant growth, microbial communities, enzymatic activities, and Zn and Cd fractionation and phytoavailability in mining soils. Smelter soil contaminated by Zn (1860.0 mg kg-1) and Cd (39.9 mg kg-1) was collected from Fengxian, China, treated with different doses (0 (control), 1, 2.5, 5, and 10% w/w) of both biochars and cultivated by Brassica juncea in a greenhouse pot experiment. The acid-soluble, reducible, oxidizable, and residual fraction and plant tissue concentrations of Zn and Cd were determined. Biochar addition improved plant growth (22.6-29.4%), soil pH (up to 0.94 units), and soil organic matter (up to 4-fold) compared to the control. The ASB and ATB, particularly ATB, reduced the acid-soluble (21-26% for Zn and 15-35% for Cd) and the reducible (9-36% for Zn and 11-19% for Cd) fractions of Zn and Cd and altered these fractions in the organic and residual fractions. Therefore, the biochars decreased the metal concentrations in the roots (36-41% for Zn and 33-37% for Cd) and shoots (25-31% for Zn and 20-29% for Cd), which might be due to the increase in pH, biochar liming effects, and metal sorption by the biochar. The biochars impact on the bacterial community composition was selective. The ASB and ATB decreased the activities of soil β-glucosidase, dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase while increasing the urease activity. The biochars, particularly ATB, can be considered as effective soil amendments for reducing the phytotoxicity of Zn and Cd in contaminated soils, improving plant growth, enhancing the abundance of specific bacterial groups and increasing urease activity; however, more attention should be paid to their negative effects on the activities of β-glucosidase, dehydrogenase, and alkaline phosphatase.
Effects of biochars combined with ferrous sulfate and pig manure on the bioavailability of Cd and potential phytotoxicity for wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil

Abstract:Reducing the content of Cd in wheat grains is necessary for human health, especially in alkaline farmland in northern China where a large area of soils is heavily polluted with Cd. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of wheat straw biochar (WB) and maize straw biochar (MB) combined solely with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) or combined with FeSO4 and pig manure (PFWB and PFMB) on Cd bioavailability in soil and the phytotoxicity of Cd in wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil. The results showed that the application of these treatments decreased the concentrations of CaCl2-extractable Cd by 32.8-60.5% and increased the soil organic matter by 36.8-106.7% compared with those of the control treatment. The acid-soluble fraction of Cd was decreased by 3.7-16.8% but the residual fraction was increased by 1.7-13.7%. Furthermore, the addition of WB and MB increased the soil pH by 0.29 and 0.16 units, respectively, while the other treatments decreased the soil pH by 0.16-0.37 units. The concentrations of Cd in different wheat tissues were decreased in amended soils, and these decreases were positively correlated with CaCl2-extractable Cd and the acid-soluble fraction of Cd. The ability to accumulate Cd was in the order of root>straw>grain. In addition, there was a downward trend in the bio-concentration and translocation factors under different amendments. The amendments of PFWB and PFMB had better efficiency in the immobilization of Cd in soil and the inhibition of Cd uptake of wheat than WB and MB. In addition, the treatments of PFWB and PFMB increased the wheat yield by 14.3-16.2%, and thus have a great application prospect based on the cost-benefit analysis.
Impact of Sugarcane Bagasse-Derived Biochar on Heavy Metal Availability and Microbial Activity: A Field Study.

Abstract:In the current study, we conducted a field experiment using the test plant, Brassica chinesis L. (pak choi), to investigate the effect of sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar on the bioavailability of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb), and the health of soil microbiota in a contaminated soil. Biochar application significantly (P < 0.05) increased pak choi yield. Bioavailability of heavy metals to plant shoots and roots decreased with increasing biochar application rates (at 0, 1.5, 2.25 and 3.0 t ha−1). Sequential extraction of the biochar-treated and -untreated soil revealed that exchangeable Cd reduced whereas organically-bound fraction increased with increasing biochar rate. The labile fractions of Cu and Pb decreased, but the residual fraction increased in biochar-treated soils compared to the control. Urease, catalase and invertase activities, and the populations of bacteria and actinomycetes were significantly enhanced, whereas fungi population declined in biochar-treated soils. This study highlights that sugarcane bagasse biochar has the potential to support the remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals, and as such can improve the yield and quality of agricultural crops.
Bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soil as affected by different mass ratios of biochars

Abstract:The biochars are efficient adsorbent of heavy metals. However, the type of biochar species determines the effectiveness of biochars for immobilization of heavy metals. In this experiment, we mixed different biochars in variable mass ratios and evaluated their effects on plant growth and bioavailability of heavy metals. The results revealed that amendment of single and mixed biochars has increased pH, EC, available P and K of soil. The straw block biochar with maize straw biochar at a mass ratio of 1:2 (SDM) has significantly decreased Pb and Cu concentration in soil. The straw block biochar with maize straw biochar at a mass ratio of 2:1 (DSM) has highly increased the dry biomass of Chinese cabbage than single biochar or control, whereas plant physiological properties were mostly not affected. It is concluded that peanut shell biochar with maize straw biochar at a mass ratio of 2:1 (DPS) and DSM have significantly decreased Pb, Zn and Cu concentration in plants. The single peanut shell biochar has significantly decreased the plant Cd concentration. The ability of transport of heavy metals in Chinese cabbage was in the sequence of Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb. The mixing of different biochars has decreased the concentration of heavy metals in plants more effectively than single biochar.
Impacts of biochar materials on copper speciation, bioavailability, and toxicity in chromated copper arsenate polluted soil

Abstract:Trace element polluted soils pose risks to human and environmental health. Biochar can decrease trace element bioavailability in soils, but their resulting ability to reduce soil toxicity may vary significantly depending on feedstocks used, pyrolysis conditions, and the target pollutants. Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) polluted sites are common, but only very few types of biochar have been tested for these sites. Hence, we tested fourteen well-characterized biochar materials for their ability to bind Cu and reduce toxicity in a CCA polluted soil in a 56-day experiment. Biochar (1%, wt/wt) increased plant (wheat, Triticum aestivum L.) shoot and root growth by 6-58% and 0-73%, reduced soil toxicity to Arthrobacter globiformis by 7-55%, decreased bioavailable Cu (Pseudomonas fluorescens bioreporter) by 5-65%, and decreased free Cu2+ ion activities by 27-89%. The A. globiformis solid-contact test constituted a sensitive ecotoxicological endpoint and deserves further attention for assessment of soil quality. Oil seed rape straw biochar generally performed better than other tested biochar materials. Biochar performance was positively correlated with its high cation exchange capacity, multiple surface functional groups, and high nitrogen and phosphorus content. Our results pave the way for future selection of feedstocks for creation of modified biochar materials with optimal performance in CCA polluted soil.

Abstract:The effect and mechanistic evidence of biochar on the (im)mobilization of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in multi-contaminated soils, with respect to the role of surface-functional groups and organic/inorganic compounds of biochar, are poorly understood. Herein, biochars produced from grass residues, rice straw, and wood were applied to a mining-soil contaminated with As, Cd, Pb, and Zn for 473-d. Biochars did not reduce the mobilization of Cd and Zn, whereas they simultaneously exhibited disparate effects on As and Pb mobilization. The phenolic hydroxyl and carboxylic groups on the wood biochar's surfaces promoted the conversion of Pb2+ into PbCO3/Pb(OH)2 and/or PbO, minimally by the rice and grass biochars. Rice and grass biochars led to the dissolution of scorodite and the formation of less stable forms of Fe-oxide-bound As (i.e., goethite and ferrihydrite); furthermore, it resulted in the reduction of As(V) to As(III). The PTEs mobilization and phytoavailability was mainly governed by the release of dissolved aliphatic- and aromatic-carbon, chloride, sulfur chemistry, phosphate competition, and the electrostatic repulsion in biochar-treated soils. In conclusion, pristine-biochar has a limited impact on the remediation of multi-contaminated soils, and the use of modified-biochar, possessing higher surface areas and functionality and active exchange sites, are preferred under such conditions.

Abstract:Abstract The current study investigated the effect of biochars derived from cinnamomum woodchip, garden waste and mulberry woodchip on soil phytoavailable lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) pools, and their uptake by Chinese cabbage ( Brassica chinensis L.). The biochars were produced at 450 °C of pyrolysis temperature. The contaminated soils were collected from Yunfu (classified as Udept), Jiyuan (Ustalf) and Shaoguan (Udult) cities in China at the depth of 0–20 cm and amended with biochars at the rate of 3% w/w. After mixing the soil with biochar for 14 days, the Chinese cabbage was planted in the amended soils. Then, it was harvested on the 48th day after sowing period. In Udult soil, Chinese cabbage died 18 days after sowing period in control and soils amended with cinnamomum and mulberry biochars. Although only plants grown with the garden waste biochar treatment survived in Udult soil, amendment of garden waste or mulberry biochars at 3% w/w (450 °C) to Udult soil significantly increased (4.95–6.25) soil pH compared to other biochar treatments. In Udept and Ustalf soils, the application of garden waste and mulberry biochars significantly improved plant biomass compared to control, albeit it was dependent on both biochar and soil properties. Garden waste biochar significantly decreased soil Cd phytoavailable concentration by 26% in the Udult soil, while a decrease of soil Cd phytoavailable concentration by 16% and 9% was observed in Ustalf and Udept soils, respectively. The available phosphorus in biochar and soil pH were important factors controlling toxic metal phytouptake by the plant. Thus, the amendment of soil with biochar at 3% can effectively reduce the mobility of Cd and Pb in soil and plant uptake. However, biochar and soil properties should be well-known before being used for soil toxic metal immobilization.

Abstract:Due to the increase of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated land area worldwide, effective measures should be taken to minimize the Cd bioavailability in crops. A study was performed to explore the effectiveness of biochar pyrolyzed from rice straw at 400 °C alone or combined with AM fungi (Funneliformis mosseae) on the corn growth and Cd uptake in corn in Cd-contaminated soil with different levels of phosphorus supplies. The results showed that biochar significantly reduced 66% and 38% of Cd uptake in shoot and root respectively (P < 0.001) attributed to the increase of soil pH and dissolved organic matter. In contrast, AM fungi inoculation of corn plants had little effect on Cd bioavailability due to the AM was suppressed by the highly contaminated acid soil (31.76 mg/kg), and had neither synergistic effect with biochar on decreasing the Cd bioavailability with high or low phosphorus supplies. This study demonstrated that biochar application could be a promising method to immobilize Cd in the contaminated soil to ensure the safety of agro-product while high Cd-contaminated soil would suppress the growth of mycorrhizae, so this remains an open question to be further studied.

Abstract:Biochar can be effective in immobilizing soil cadmium (Cd), but the difference in its immobilization mechanisms for different levels of Cd-contaminated soils was overlooked. In this study, rice straw biochar (BC) was added to three Cd-contaminated soils following 180 days of incubation, in the process of which the dynamic changes of Cd speciation, soil properties and microbial community diversity were determined. BC could significantly reduce the ratio of acid-soluble in the three soils, especially in light and medium Cd-contaminated soils by more than 20%. The addition of biochar could significantly increase the soil pH, soil organic matter, cation exchange capacity, and the activities of catalase, but decrease the richness and diversity of bacterial communities in all soils. The associations between microbial communities were inhibited in light and medium Cd-contaminated soils, but promoted in heavy Cd-contaminated soils. Furthermore, the main pathway of BC effect on soil Cd availability was also analyzed by partial least squares model (PLS-PM), which indicated that BC indirectly reduced Cd availability mainly by regulating the microbial community in light Cd-contaminated soil, whereas BC directly reduced Cd availability primarily by its own adsorption in medium and heavy Cd-contaminated soils. This research deepened understanding of the mechanisms of stabilization of Cd by biochar for agricultural soils.

Abstract:Biochar application emerges as a promising and sustainable solution for the remediation of soils contaminated with potentially toxic metal (loid)s (PTMs), yet its potential to reduce PTM accumulation in crops remains to be fully elucidated. In our study, a hierarchical meta-analysis based on 276 research articles was conducted to quantify the effects of biochar application on crop growth and PTM accumulation. Meanwhile, a machine learning approach was developed to identify the major contributing features. Our findings revealed that biochar application significantly enhanced crop growth, and reduced PTM concentrations in crop tissues, showing a decrease trend of grains (36.1%, 33.6-38.6%) > shoots (31.1%, 29.3-32.8%) > roots (27.5%, 25.7-29.2%). Furthermore, biochar modifications were found to amplify its remediation potential in PTM-contaminated soils. Biochar application was observed to provide favorable conditions for reducing PTM uptake by crops, primarily through decreasing available PTM concentrations and improving overall soil quality. Employing machine learning techniques, we identified biochar properties, such as surface area and C content as a key factor in decreasing PTM bioavailability in soil-crop systems. Furthermore, our study indicated that biochar application could reduce probabilistic health risks associated with of the presence of PTMs in crop grains, thereby contributing to human health protection. These findings highlighted the essential role of biochar in remediating PTM-contaminated lands and offered guidelines for enhancing safe crop production.
Biochar Decreased the Bioavailability of Zn to Rice and Wheat Grains: Insights from Microscopic to Macroscopic Scales.

Abstract:Zn deficiency is a critical problem for many crops and human populations worldwide. Soil biochar amendment has recently been promoted as a sustainable agricultural practice. However, its effect on the bioavailability of micronutrients (especially Zn) to crops has not been fully addressed. This study investigated the impact of long-term biochar application in soils on Zn bioavailability to rice and wheat, using field experiments, and batch sorption/desorption experiments, in combination with extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). In field soils biochar amendment increased total Zn content, but significantly decreased CaCl2-extractable Zn concentrations. Intriguingly, the uptake of Zn to wheat and rice grains was decreased. At high biochar application rates of 124 and 270t/ha the Zn concentrations in wheat grains (36.6 and 37.5mg/kg) reached a deficient level, lower than the recommended concentration of 45mg/kg. The batch experiments showed that biochar application at a cumulative rate of 10.5, 15.8, 31.5, 124, and 270t/ha significantly increased soil pH and soil organic matter (SOM) content, resulting in greater sorption and lower desorption of Zn. The EXAFS results demonstrated that the main forms of sorbed Zn were outer-sphere Zn complexes, Zn-illite, Zn-kaolinite and Zn-OM. The proportion of Zn-OM increased with increasing biochar application rates, suggesting that higher SOM might be more effective in immobilizing Zn and thus decreasing the Zn bioavailability. These results on the microscopic and macroscopic scales improved our understanding of the Zn bioavailability to crops, and raised potential concerns on the Zn deficiency in agricultural soils with long-term biochar application.
