Abstract:Most researchers who have employed the job demands-resources (JD-R) model to investigate the factors influencing work engagement, have omitted the effects of personal characteristics. In this study, we discussed the moderating effects of proactive personality on the influence of social support and work-family conflict (WFC) on work engagement. Participants comprised 477 workers in several airports in eastern China. The results showed that social support had a positive effect on work engagement, and WFC had a negative effect on work engagement. These influences were moderated by the proactive personality of the individual. We have also discussed the role of personality in the JD-R model.

Abstract:Creativity of employees is a major focus of research in the organization sciences. In this study we examine the relationships between both micro (intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) and molar (team climate) variables with manager-rated creativity of R&D employees. Specifically, we hypothesize that (a) extrinsic motivation has a direct relationship with creativity, (b) intrinsic motivation is more strongly related to creativity when extrinsic motivation is low compared to when it is high, (c) team collaborative and competitive climates have direct effects on creativity as well as indirect effects through individual motivation, and (d) intrinsic motivation mediates relationships of the climate variables with creativity, which in turn is moderated by extrinsic motivation. Data were collected from R&D engineers and their managers at a large high-tech company headquartered in Taiwan. Results indicate that a collaborative team climate has a direct positive relationship with creativity as well as one that operates through intrinsic motivation, which in turn was moderated by employee’s extrinsic motivation level. A competitive team climate positively related to extrinsic motivation, but extrinsic motivation did not directly relate to creativity. However, extrinsic motivation did have strong relationships with creativity when intrinsic motivation was low. Results suggest that perhaps the different types of motivation relate to different types of creativity (incremental versus radical). Managerial and theoretical implications of results are discussed as are the study’s limitations.

Abstract:Employee creativity is fast becoming a part and parcel in the wake of the increasing volatility of the employment market and the complexity of job demands. Drawing from the actor-context interactionist theoretical approach and career construction theory, this paper adds to current research by exploring the serial mediating effect of job crafting (JC) and career adaptability (CA) in the impact of human resource management strength (HRMS) on employee creativity. Furthermore, we suggest that proactive personality interacts with HRMS to jointly influence creativity. Survey data from samples of 297 (Study 1) and 390 (Study 2) employees largely confirm our model. Our findings show that HRMS positively impacts employee creativity via serial mediation of job crafting and career adaptability, and proactive personality negatively moderates the process. The paper confirms and expands the interactionist theoretical perspective of creativity, highlights the significance of integration of contextual factors, individual characteristics, and career construction, and makes certain practical sense.

Abstract:Integrating the social perspective of creativity and the goal-regulatory process perspective of proactivity, this study investigates how proactive personality influences two forms of employee creativity-incremental creativity and radical creativity through multisource information exchange. Using a moderated mediation framework, this study suggests that leader-member exchange (LMX) moderates the positive association between proactive personality and those two forms of employee creativity. The results of this study, drawn from the sample of 500 employees and their immediate supervisors in a large state-owned company of China, support most of the hypotheses. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings, as well as the limitations of this study and the directions for future research, are discussed.

Abstract:Based on team composition theory and job crafting research, this study built and examined a comprehensive moderated mediation model in a sample of 88 construction management teams consisting of 88 team leaders and 429 subordinates, linking team proactivity personality with team performance via collaborative job crafting and the moderating effect of empowering leadership. The results show that team mean proactive personality is positively related to team performance. In addition, collaborative job crafting fully mediates the relationship between team mean proactive personality and team performance. Furthermore, the relationship between team mean proactive personality and collaborative job crafting is moderated by empowering leadership. Finally, empowering leadership moderates the mediation effect, in that the positive mediation effect of collaborative job crafting is stronger when empowering leadership is high than it is low.

Abstract:Proactive personality is an individual difference factor capturing the behavioral tendency toward displaying proactive behaviors to enact positive situational changes. Drawing from the Job Demands – Resources framework and trait activation theory, we conducted two studies to extend the proactive personality literature by responding to calls to explore how and under which circumstances proactive personality affects work outcomes. We found that work proactive personality related to performance (i.e., task performance and counterproductive work behaviors) through its relationship with engagement in a field study of 340 employee-supervisor dyads (study 1). In order to explore what organizational factors can be targeted to intervene or support employees who lack proactive personality, we explored the boundary conditions and organizational circumstances of the proactive personality-engagement relationship. We conducted a multilevel study of 52 teams (study 2) and showed that perceived organizational support and team proactive personality composition (mean) moderated the relationship between individual proactive personality and work engagement. Specifically, this positive relationship was found to be stronger among employees who had low perceived organizational support, and who worked in teams with high team proactive personality means.

Abstract:This research built a theoretical model and tested psychological process and boundary condition linking proactive personality to employees' ambidextrous creativity by introducing role breadth self-efficacy as the mediator and support for creativity as the moderator. Using survey data from 400 executives of start-up companies in China, we found that, as anticipated, proactive personality positively affected ambidextrous creativity. Role breadth self-efficacy fully mediated the effects of proactive personality on ambidextrous creativity. Support for creativity moderated the link between proactive personality and ambidextrous creativity: ambidextrous creativity was higher in response to high proactive personality when support for creativity was high. These results yielded important implications regarding how to improve managers' creative performance at work.

Abstract:Based on the antecedent variable (playfulness personality) and the outcome variable (creative deviance) on the individual level, we introduce mediating variables (positive impression management motivation and harmonious innovation passion), integrate moderating variables (employee growth need strength and professional mission sense) to construct the conceptual model and theoretical framework of the influence mechanism of playfulness personality on creative deviance of employees. Based on the questionnaire survey data of employees in high-tech enterprises, this study adopts the nonparametric percentile Bootstrap method based on deviation correction to empirically discuss the influence mechanism of employee playfulness personality on employee creative deviance. The empirical analysis results show that employee playfulness personality has a significant positive influence on employee creative deviance. Positive impression management motivation and harmonious innovation passion partially mediate the relationships between employee playfulness personality and creative deviance. Employee growth need strength negatively moderates the relationships between positive impression management motivation and employee creative deviance. The stronger the employee growth need strength, the weaker the mediating effect of employees' playfulness personality on employee creative deviance through positive impression management motivation, and there is a moderated mediating effect.

Abstract:Based on the social perspective on creativity, which highlights the importance of social network parameters for individual creativity, this study examines the relationship between employees’ proactive personality and their individual creativity in the context of visionary leadership behaviour. Using survey data from 247 employees and their direct supervisors from 54 work teams in China, we find that informal leadership status mediates the relationship between an employee's proactive personality and his/her creativity. We also demonstrate that the link between an employee's informal leadership status and his/her individual creativity is moderated by formal leaders’ visionary behaviour. Overall, a moderated‐mediation model is established such that, when a formal leader shows a high level of visionary behaviour, the relationship between an employee's proactive personality and his/her creativity via informal leadership status is stronger than with a low level of visionary leader behaviour.Practitioner points Employees with more proactive personalities should be aware of and take advantage of their potential informal leadership status in work teams for increased individual creativity. We suggest that managers recognize informal leaders and provide visionary guidance to promote the informal leaders’ creativity.

Abstract:This study investigated how different dimensions of social capital influenced employee creativity and when the effects were stronger with a heterogeneous sample of teams in the PRC. Considering knowledge as the foundation of employee creativity, we integrated the mediating role of knowledge sharing and the moderating role of knowledge characteristics in the relationship between social capital and employee creativity. The results demonstrated that (1) knowledge sharing mediated the relationship between social capital and employee creativity, but different dimensions of social capital exerted dissimilar effects on employee creativity via influencing knowledge sharing. (2) knowledge tacitness moderated the relationship between one dimension of social capital (shared vision) and employee creativity, but not the relationship between other dimensions (relation strength and trust) and employee creativity. Implications of these results were discussed.

Abstract:Purpose– By integrating proactive perspective and person-environment fit (P-E fit) perspective, this study intends to examine a moderated mediation model of proactive personality to investigate its effects on employee creativity. The current study proposes felt responsibility for change mediates the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. The purpose of this paper is to identify core self-evaluation (CSE) and developmental feedback received as personal and situational moderators on the relationship between proactive personality and felt responsibility for change.Design/methodology/approach– A matched sample from 232 employees and their supervisors of software companies in China was used to test the hypotheses. Hierarchical regression analyses and moderated mediation approach were conducted to examine the proposed model.Findings– The results indicate that felt responsibility for change mediates the positive relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. CSE and developmental feedback received positively moderate the relationship between proactive personality and felt responsibility for change. In addition, CSE and developmental feedback received are two moderators in the path from proactive personality to employee creativity via felt responsibility for change such as the indirect relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity through felt responsibility for change is more pronounced when CSE and developmental feedback received are higher rather than lower, respectively.Research limitations/implications– The paper contributes to creativity literature by identifying felt responsibility for change as the mediator on the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. The current study also contributes to proactive perspective and P-E fit theory by investigating the moderating roles of CSE and developmental feedback received on the relationship between proactive personality and felt responsibility for change. Although data were collected from multiple sources to avoid common method variance, the cross-sectional design cannot unequivocally examine the direction of causality in this study.Originality/value– By examining both mediating and moderating effects, the paper contributes to uncovering the black box in which employees with proactive personality exhibit felt responsibility for change and creativity.
Domain knowledge and role clarity moderate the relationship between proactive personality and employee radical creativity

Abstract:This study explored the influence of proactive personality on employee radical creativity along with the role of teams' domain knowledge and employees' role clarity as moderators of this relationship. We distributed a survey to obtain data from 290 supervisor–employee dyads in China, and tested our hypotheses via a conditional process analysis. The results show that the moderating effect of domain knowledge on the positive relationship between proactive personality and employee radical creativity was nonsignificant. However, role clarity had a significant moderating effect on the moderating role of domain knowledge in the relationship between proactive personality and employee radical creativity; that is to say, the relationship between proactive personality and radical creativity was most strongly positive when both teams' domain knowledge and employees' role clarity were at a high level. These findings are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract:This study investigates the interplay among proactive personality, leader creativity expectations, and role clarity in stimulating employee creativity based on the theoretical frameworks of role theory. Questionnaires were distributed to obtain 290 leader-employee dyads from China to examine hypotheses via conditional process analysis. The results show that proactive personality has a positive effect on employee creativity, leader creativity expectations did not play a significant moderating role on the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. The interaction between leader creativity expectations and role clarity has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. These findings are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract:When working alongside proactive colleagues, do you elevate yourself through benign envy or resort to malicious envy? To address this intriguing question, we constructed a model based on social comparison theory to measure the double-edged sword effects of proactive personality on employee outcomes. We hypothesized that proactive employees would induce two distinct tendencies in their peers-workplace ostracism and employee creativity-due to peer envy. The study analyzed 389 valid responses from full-time employees in Chinese organizations using structural equation modeling. Results indicate that proactive personality positively influences benign envy among peers, which in turn positively affects employee creativity. Moreover, benign envy mediates the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. On the other hand, proactive personality positively influences malicious envy among peers, which in turn positively affects workplace ostracism. Additionally, malicious envy mediates the relationship between proactive personality and workplace ostracism. This study intertwines personality, emotions, and workplace outcomes, thereby advancing the existing literature on social comparison theory. Additionally, it furnishes valuable insights for organizational human resource management, particularly in the realms of employee recruitment and workplace relationship management.

Abstract:We used self-determination theory to investigate the effects of proactive personality on employees' work engagement and helping behavior, as well as the moderating role of team autonomy in this relationship. Twowave data were collected from 75 sales teams (75 team leaders and 464 team members) from a large private company in South China. Multilevel path model analysis was used to test our hypotheses. The impact of proactive personality was amplified in teams with a higher level of team autonomy. Our findings not only provide empirical support for self-determination theory, but also contribute to the proactive personality literature by revealing the critical boundary condition of the effectiveness of proactive personality. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:Studies linking proactive personality to creativity have primarily taken a future-oriented perspective, describing a process where individuals assess future opportunities and risks of creative endeavors. Complementing this approach, we draw on an attribution theory perspective to delineate how proactive personality relates to employee creativity through the serial mediating effects of job reflective learning-a backward-looking cognitive process-and activated positive affective states. Job reflective learning captures backward-looking self-assessments and the underlying internal causal attributions, and it is differentiated into two valences: job reflective learning from successes and from failures. Based on two separate multi-wave, multi-source field studies, our findings consistently show a serial mediation process linking proactive personality to creativity through both valences of job reflective learning and activated positive affective states. Job reflective learning from successes breeds joviality, whereas job reflective learning from failures arouses attentiveness. Joviality and attentiveness-both types of activated positive affective states-in turn promote creativity. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of how proactive employees manifest their proactivity trait into actual creativity through backward-looking cognitive and affective processes.

Abstract:Purpose Adopting a person–situation interactionist framework, this study examined the joint effects of employee personality (i.e., extraversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness) and social exchange relationships with peers (i.e., team–member exchange; TMX) in predicting work engagement. Methodology This study is based on survey responses from 235 Chinese employees collected at two time points with 3 months in between. We conducted moderated regression analyses to test the hypotheses that employees higher in extraversion or conscientiousness or lower in neuroticism would demonstrate a stronger TMX–work engagement relation. Findings Results from this study showed that the three focal personality traits moderated the TMX–engagement relation simultaneously. Specifically, the positive TMX–engagement relation was stronger for employees with higher extraversion or lower neuroticism than that for their counterparts. Interestingly, the TMX–engagement relation was positive for employees lower in conscientiousness but negative for those higher in conscientiousness. Implications These findings support the notion that lateral social exchange relationships in the workplace (i.e., TMX) are an important antecedent of work engagement and, more importantly, their beneficial effects on work engagement are contingent on certain types and/or levels of personality traits. Originality/Value This study not only advances our understanding of presumed antecedents of work engagement but also opens a new door for future research on work engagement by highlighting the importance of a person–situation interactionist framework.
Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Translation of the Proactive Personality Scale

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese translation of the Proactive Personality Scale. Four samples were surveyed. In Sample 1 and Sample 2, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis results confirmed the unidimensional structure of the 10-item abbreviated version of the scale. In Sample 2, Proactive Personality scores were found to be positively correlated with the personality factors of Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Openness, and Agreeableness, and negatively correlated with Neuroticism. In Sample 3, Proactive Personality was found to be positively related to self-efficacy and political skill. In Sample 4, demographics controlled, Proactive Personality explained significant incremental variance in the employees' self-rated career satisfaction and job performance as rated by immediate supervisors.

Abstract:In the present study, we explored the relationship between proactive personality and career adaptability to construct a cross-level moderated mediation model based on the conservation of resources (COR) theory. By conducting a time-lagged study involving three data collection points from 587 employees across 104 teams in China, we examined how and when proactive personality predicts employees' career adaptability using strengths use as a mediator and managerial coaching as boundary conditions. The results revealed that proactive personality predicted strengths use, which, in turn, influenced career adaptability, with managerial coaching moderating the indirect relationship between proactive personality and career adaptability. Consequently, our findings suggest that, in contexts where managerial coaching lacks guidance, facilitation, and inspiration, a proactive personality encourages employees to leverage their strengths, subsequently enhancing their career adaptability. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our findings, address limitations, and propose directions for future research.
