Abstract:This paper demonstrates a flexible implementation of rules to control the simulation of urban development of Sydney from 1971 to 1996 using a cellular automata model. Five key factors, including the self propensity for development and neighbourhood support, slope constraint, transportation support, terrain and coastal proximity attractions and urban planning support are introduced into the model in a spatially explicit format, which generated a realistic estimation of the extent and timing of Sydney’s urban development. With the flexibility of rule implementation within the model, more rules can be added as new ‘If-Then’ statements to fine-tune the model, provided that a good understanding of the rule is maintained and accurate data are collected.

Developing a web-based cellular automata model for urban growth simulation

Abstract:Cellular automata as an emerging technology have been adapted increasingly by geographers and planners to simulate the spatial and temporal processes of urban growth. While the literature reports many applications of cellular automata models for urban studies, in practice, the operation of the models as well as the configuration and calibration of relevant parameters used in the models were only known to the model builders. This is largely due to the constraint that most cellular automata models were developed based on desktop computer programs, either by incorporating the model within a desktop GIS environment, or developing the model independent of a desktop GIS. Consequently, there is little input from the user to test or visualise the actual operation or evaluate the applicability of the model under different conditions. This paper presents a methodology to implement a fuzzy constrained cellular automata model of urban growth within a web-based GIS environment, using the actual urban growth of Metropolitan Sydney, Australia from 1976 to 2006 as a case study. With the web-based cellular automata model, users can visualise and test the operation of the model; they can also modify or calibrate the model’s parameters to evaluate its simulation accuracies, or even feed the model with various ‘what-if’ conditions to generate alterative outcomes. Such a web-based modelling platform provides a useful and effective channel for government authority and stakeholders to evaluate different urban growth scenarios. It also provides an interactive environment that can foster public participation in urban planning and management.

Abstract:In this paper,a novel GIS-based geographic CA modelling framework,SimUrban,is proposed to simulate and project urban expansion and development.Based on object oriented programming technology,the framework is developed by using Visual Studio.NET in GIS environment,which enables the wide usage of RS images and GIS data.The proposed framework composes three parts:1)data acquisition,using SimUrban,ArcGIS,and Envi,the vector topographic maps and RS images are integrated;2)new transition rules of CA,such as partial least squares regression method,least square support vector machines,particle swarm optimization,kernel principal component analysis,and kernel logistic regression method,are allowed to imbedded;3)using this framework,urban expansion and land use/cover changes are simulated with assessment of the results by the error matrix method.The urban development and growth of Jiading District,Shanghai,from 1989 to 2006 was successfully simulated in SimUrban with the CA model based on principal component analysis(PCA).Simulation accuracy of non-urban category is 82.04%,urban category is 70.23%,the overall accuracy is 76.55%,and the Kappa coefficient is 52.58%.The implementation of Jiading District has demonstrated that the modelling framework can generates patterns match well with the actual urban morphology.
Developing a Cellular Automaton Model of Urban Growth Incorporating Fuzzy Set Approaches

Abstract:This is the first part of a two-paper series elaborating the development of a cellular automaton model of urban development using GIS and fuzzy set approaches. Under the paradigm of fuzzy set theory, this paper develops a cellular automaton model of urban development based on an understanding of the logistic trend of urban development processes. The model delimits urban areas as multiple states using a fuzzy membership function and applies transition rules with linguistic variables to represent the non-deterministic nature of urban development controls. By implementing the model in ARC/INFO using the Arc Macro Language (AML) in a GRID environment, experimental scenarios of development of a virtual city under various conditions are presented. Experimental application of the model to an artificial city showed realistic results and demonstrated the model is theoretically feasible and valid. Further work is needed to calibrate the model when applying it to simulate an actual urban development. In the second part of the two-paper series, application of the model in simulating the urban development of Sydney in space and over the last three decades will be demonstrated and discussed.

Abstract:A Cellular Automata model based on Partial Least Squares Approaches is proposed for simulating complex urban systems. The core part of Geo-CA model is the transition rules and a mass of independent spatial variables are involved in the process of creating CA model. Studies have focused on eliminating correlation using Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), but there is no a thoroughly solution with a reasonable result for the issue. Using Partial Least Squares Regression integrated with Geo-CA and GIS, a novel CA model is created for better urban expansion simulation. Abstract:Based on partial least squares regression,a novel geographical cellular automata model (PLS - CA) is proposed for simulating urban growth and expansion.In definition of cellular automata(CA) transition rules,numerous highly correlated independent spatial variables are utilized for obtaining more actual simulation results.Conventional methods,such as multi-criteria evaluation(MCE) and principal component analysis (PCA),have difficulties in removing the harmful effects of correlation.Using partial least squares regression (PLS) integrated with CA and geographical information system(GIS),a new CA model is created for optimizing the simulation of urban growth and expansion. The PLS - CA model has been successfully applied to simulating urban growth of Jiading district,Shanghai from 1989 to 2006. And the simulation results show that the accuracy of PLS - CA is higher than that of conventional CA models.

Abstract:Cellular Automata (CA) have attracted growing attention in urban simulation because their capability in spatial modelling is not fully developed in GIS. This paper discusses how cellular automata (CA) can be extended and integrated with GIS to help planners to search for better urban forms for sustainable development. The cellular automata model is built within a grid-GIS system to facilitate easy access to GIS databases for constructing the constraints. The essence of the model is that constraint space is used to regulate cellular space. Local, regional and global constraints play important roles in affecting modelling results. In addition, 'grey' cells are defined to represent the degrees or percentages of urban land development during the iterations of modelling for more accurate results. The model can be easily controlled by the parameter k using a power transformation function for calculating the constraint scores. It can be used as a useful planning tool to test the effects of different urban development scenarios.

Abstract:We develop a new geographical cellular automata (CA) modeling framework, named UrbanCA, through reconstructing the essential CA structure and incorporating nonspatial, spatial, and heuristic approaches. The new UrbanCA is featured by 1) the improvement of the CA modeling framework by reformulating relationships among CA components, 2) the development of two scaling parameters to adjust the effects of transition probability and neighborhood, 3) the incorporation of a variety of statistical and heuristic methods to construct transition rules, and 4) the inclusion of urban planning regulations and spatial heterogeneities to project future urban scenarios. To illustrate the effectiveness of UrbanCA, we calibrate a CA model using artificial bee colony (ABC) to simulate the past urban patterns and predict future scenarios in Shanghai of China. The results show that UrbanCA under different scaling parameters is comparable to CA-Markov (as a reference model) concerning the accuracy of the end-state and change simulations, and is better than CA-Markov regarding the driving factor's ability to explain the modeling outcomes. UrbanCA provides more choices compared to existing CA software packages, and the models are readily calibrated elsewhere to simulate the dynamic urban growth and assess the resulting natural and socioeconomic impacts.

Abstract:The study of land use change in urban and regional systems has been dramatically transformed in the last four decades by the emergence and application of cellular automata (CA) models. CA models simulate urban land use changes which evolve from the bottom-up. Despite notable achievements in this field, there remain significant gaps between urban processes simulated in CA models and the actual dynamics of evolving urban systems. This article identifies contemporary issues faced in developing urban CA models and draws on this evidence to map out four interrelated thematic areas that require concerted attention by the wider CA urban modelling community. These are: (1) to build models that comprehensively capture the multi-dimensional processes of urban change, including urban regeneration, densification and gentrification, in-fill development, as well as urban shrinkage and vertical urban growth; (2) to establish models that incorporate individual human decision behaviours into the CA analytic framework; (3) to draw on emergent sources of ‘big data’ to calibrate and validate urban CA models and to capture the role of human actors and their impact on urban change dynamics; and (4) to strengthen theory-based CA models that comprehensively explain urban change mechanisms and dynamics. We conclude by advocating cellular automata that embed agent-based models and big data input as the most promising analytical framework through which we can enhance our understanding and planning of the contemporary urban change dynamics.

This article presents an application of a fuzzy-constrained cellular automata model to simulate the spatio-temporal processes of urban growth in the rapidly growing Gold Coast City in Southeast Queensland, Australia. Urban growth has been captured in the model as a continuous process in space and over time, which has been affected by a set of primary and secondary transition rules. The primary transition rules deal with the propensity of a local area for development and the impact of its neighbouring cells on such development, while the secondary transition rules reflect the influences of environmental and institutional factors on urban growth. Application of the model demonstrates its re-applicability to different regions and the effectiveness of the cellular automata technique in studying urban dynamics. It also provides tools to explore sustainable urban growth options under different socio-environmental and planning control factors. Abstract:This paper presents an improved cellular automata (CA) model of urban growth based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach with inertia weight. An innovative feature of this cellular model is the incorporation of swarm intelligence to stochastically optimize the transition rules to reduce the simulation uncertainties and improve its locational accuracy in urban modeling. The similarity between the nature of self-organization of particle swarm optimizers and the bottom-up approach of cellular automata makes PSO particularly suitable to search for the global optimum parameters of CA transition rules. The CA parameters retrieved by the PSO technique are able to express precisely the contributions of various driving forces to urban growth; hence an effective cellular model can be realized for modeling urban dynamics. The PSO based CA model was applied in Fengxian District of Shanghai Municipality, eastern China, to simulate the spatio-temporal process of urban growth from 1992 to 2008 at 30 m spatial resolution. The simulation outcomes, evaluated with error matrix and simulation accuracies, demonstrate that the PSO-CA model outperforms other spatial statistical based CA models. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Integration of remote sensing and CA has been the frontier edge of the urban research. This paper presents an application of remote sensing and cellular automata in modelling the impacts of different policy scenarios on urban growth in Lanzhou, China. SLEUTH urban growth model, was introduced and coupled with remote sensing loosely. SLEUTH was an extended cellular automata model, developed with predefined growth rules applied spatially to grid maps of cities, and designed to be both scaleable and universally applicable. SLEUTH is an acronym for the input layers that the model uses in gridded map form: Slope, Land Use, Exclusion, Urban Extent, Transportation and Hillshade. In this paper, the main built-up area of Lanzhou is chose as the study area, which is a typical valley-basin city. Historical data sets derive from aerial photos of 1980 (1:10000) and 2001(1:4000), and Landsat TM images collected in 1986 and 1993.And three different policy scenarios were designed to explore its different impacts on urban growth, respective to calibration and prediction of the model. The first scenario was without any consideration given to urban planning or policy; the second scenario considered urban planning and policies, but only 50% implementation of the overall plan or policies; the third scenario considered full implementation of the urban plan and polices. The calibrations of the three scenarios all reflect the restrictive land use for development in Lanzhou, and the intentions to control the sprawl strictly. The progressive urban developments are projected into the future 20 years under three different scenarios. Compared with statistic and spatial distribution under different scenarios, it can be concluded the impacts of policies on urban growth in Lanzhou are profound, and the government plays a very important role in urban growth. And the second scenario is more close to the reality, the implementation of urban planning and policies in the reality is not very good and th- - ere are still many problems about urban planning and decision-making in urban growth of Lanzhou, such as arbitrary and scientific.
Visualizing the Urban Development of Sydney ( 1971-1996 ) in GIS

Abstract:This paper investigates ways of recording and visualizing the spatio-temporal trends of urban development in the Sydney metropolitan area from 1971 to 1996, which is an important component in modelling the urban development of metropolitan Sydney. Using GIS as a visualization tool, the paper first analyses the problems and quality of spatial data from different data providers. ABS census data are therefore selected to be used in this research. A fuzzy boundary criterion is defined to illustrate the physical urban extent of Sydney. Animations in both 2-D and 3-D are created for the visualization of Sydney’s urban development. Visualization shows that the urban area of Sydney had been developing largely in accordance with what was planned in the Sydney Region Outline Plan. West, southwest and south parts were major directions for this development. It also shows that this development had been supported by the transportation network and the relief. It is concluded that GIS is an important and useful technique both for the visualization of spatial data quality and consistency and for the visualization of urban development in space and over time.

Abstract:In recent decades, cellular automata (CA) have become popular for evaluating and forecasting urban transformation over time and space, especially in rapidly developing countries. These models enhance the understanding of urban dynamics and the complex interplay between land-use changes and urban sustainability. CA help governments, planners, and stakeholders to predict and evaluate the potential outcomes of future policy alternatives before making decisions. Thus, CA are frequently used to create what-if scenarios for policy implementation. This chapter includes an overview of the basic and state-of-the-art concepts and methods in urban CA modeling, as well as the latest studies, applications, and current problems. First, we conduct a systematic review of urban CA modeling to provide critical comments on previous and recent studies. The basic techniques, including the components of a basic CA model, modifications for urban modeling, and collection of data sources, are then provided, along with a classification of different types of urban CA. Finally, the applications of CA in urban studies and planning practices are presented, as well as discussions of further research. We also point out the major problems in recent studies and applications for further research.
Calibrating cellular automata for urban development modelling using principal component analysis

Abstract:Principal component analysis (PCA) is a powerful technique for extracting structure from high-dimensional datasets. In this paper, a PCA based cellular automata (CA) model for modelling urban development is presented. Compared to the conventional method of retrieving CA transition rules, the PCA model needs a small number of principal components to account for most of the structure in the datasets due to the noise reduction. The PCA-CA model is successfully applied in a fast growing area of Shanghai, eastern China. The results produced by the PCA-CA model shows that it matches well with the actual development of the case study area with relatively high accuracy. ©2009 IEEE.
A Particle Swarm Intelligence Based Cellular Model for Urban Morphology Evolution Modelling——A Case Study in Jiading District of Shanghai

Abstract:As a complex non-linear and dynamic process, full understanding of the urban morphology and evolution mechanism requires modelling. Due to its abilities of simulating and predicting a complex system,cellular automata (CA) have been increasingly used to capture the nature of urban evolution since the pioneering work of Tobler. More recently, intelligence methods were widely adopted to optimize geographical CA models. The similarity be-tween the nature of self-organization of particle swarm optimizers (PSO) and the "bottom-up" approach of cellular models makes it particularly suitable for optimizing transition rules. Based on automatically searching the minimum differences between the simulation results produced by a CA model based on conventional logistic regression meth-od and the actual pattern of urban morphology, this research integrates the PSO method and a CA model to stochas-tically optimize combination of parameters of CA rules and construct the PSO based CA model for urban expansion and evolution modelling. Based on Matlah, Visual Studio. Net and GIS, the PSO algorithm and the PSO-CA model were successfully implemented. By using the 17 years (from 1989 to 2006) historical remotely sensed images, the PSO-CA model was calibrated to simulate the urban expansion of Jiading District, Shanghai Municipality. Besides the urban pattern of Jiading District at 2010 was projected with the PSO-CA model. Evaluated with a confusion ma-trix,the simulation results of the PSO-CA model obtained accuracies of 87.42% for the non-urban category, 76. 51% for the urban category,82. 35% for overall,and 64. 31% for the Kappa coefficient,which outperforms the logistic regression based CA model ,with accuracies of 84. 36% for the non-urban category,71.58% for the urban category ,78. 42% for overall,and 56. 32% for the Kappa coefficient. This research have demonstrated that conven-tional transition rules were substantially improved by the PSO technique, which also can optimize a wide range of traditional CA models for urban evolution modelling.

Abstract:This paper presents an urban land-use simulation model using cellular automata (CA). In the model urban growth is regarded as the result of a global process underpinned by local actions and land-use change as the joint action of three different effects: attribute, heterogeneity, and gravity. The attribute and heterogeneity effects are regarded as different aspects of a local driving force for change constituted by changing accessibility and other attributes resulting from the interaction of land use and transport at the neighborhood level. The gravity effect is a universal resistance to change as a result of inertia and agglomeration of compatible land uses in the vicinity. To ensure that local actions would lead to global behavior, a multipass, in addition to a single-pass, land-use-allocation algorithm is designed to mimic land-use changes. With metropolitan Melbourne in Australia as a case study, the performance of the model in replicating land-use changes is compared with that of an alternative model developed by using only a distance function. The results of the comparison show that the proposed CA model outperforms the alternative model with only a distance function, confirming the importance of incorporating local attributes in modeling land-use changes.

Abstract:A novel prototype, SimUrban, is developed to simulate urban development through the integrated GIS and cellular automata (CA) with hybrid transition rules. This new framework consists of three tiers: data, operation and display for different purposes. Based on Object-Oriented Technology (OOP), we built the SimUrban framework using ArcGIS Engine and VS.Net. The open framework has favorable extensibility and userdefined functions, and more applied functions and new transition rules can be integrated with the system.
