Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:The problem of finding the sum of a polynomial's values is considered. In particular, for any $n\geq 3$, the explicit formula for the sum of the $n$th powers of natural numbers $S_n=\sum_{x=1}^{m}x^{n}$ is proved: $$\sum_{x=1}^{m}x^{n}=(-1)^{n}m(m+1)(-\frac{1}{2}+\sum_{i=2}^{n}a_i(m+2)(m+3)...(m+i)),$$ here $a_i=\frac{1}{i+1}\sum_{k=1}^{i}\frac{(-1)^{k}k^{n}}{k!(i-k)!}$, $(i=2,3,...,n-1)$, $a_n=\frac{(-1)^n}{n+1}$. Note that this formula does not contain Bernoulli numbers.

On Power Sums and the Kummer Congruences

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the stabilizers of certain multisets $\mod p^k$ with respect to their natural multiplicative action, completely describing them for a certain family of polynomials whenever $p$ is an odd prime. This elucidates an underlying structure on the level of elements that yields a new proof of the classical Kummer Congruences. Hence the Kummer Congruences can be viewed as a consequence of putting together this local information, the interactions between which are understood. This gives a new perspective in that all known approaches are based directly on global considerations, namely either through global sum identities or $p$-adic integrals.

Abstract:We study the divisibility of the sums of the odd power of consecutive integers, $S(m,k)=1^{mk}+2^{mk}+\cdots+k^{mk}$ and $1^k+2^k+\cdots+n^k$ for odd integers $m$ and $k$, by using the Girard-Waring identity. Faulhaber's approach for the divisibilities is discussed. Some expressions of power sums in terms of Stirling numbers of the second kind are represented.

Abstract:We consider numerical semigroups $S_3 = \langle d_1,d_2,d_3 \rangle$, minimally generated by three positive integers. We revisit the Wilf question in $S_3$ and, making use of identities for degrees of syzygies of such semigroups, give a short proof of existence of an affirmative answer. We find also the lower bound for Frobenius numbers of $S_3$ and upper and lower bounds for higher genera.

Abstract:For integer $k \geq 0$, let $S_k$ denote the sum of the $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^k + 2^k + \cdots + n^k$. For any given $k$, the power sum $S_k$ can in principle be determined by differentiating $k$ times (with respect to $x$) the associated exponential generating function $\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}S_k x^k/k!$, and then taking the limit of the resulting differentiated function as $x$ approaches $0$. In this paper, we exploit this method to establish a couple of seemingly novel recurrence relations, one of them involving the even-indexed power sums $S_2, S_4,\ldots, S_{2k}$, and the other the odd-indexed power sums $S_{1}, S_3, \ldots, S_{2k-1}$, with both recurrence relations depending explicitly on the parameter $N = n + \frac{1}{2}$. From this, we obtain a determinantal formula of order $k$ which yields $S_{2k}$ [$S_{2k-1}$] in the Faulhaber form, that is, as an odd [even] polynomial in $N$. As a byproduct, we discover a new determinantal formula for the Bernoulli number $B_{2k}$. Furthermore, we show that $S_{2k}$ and $S_{2k-1}$ can be obtained by taking the corresponding higher order derivatives of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Abstract:For integer $k \geq 1$, let $S_k(n)$ denote the sum of the $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^k + 2^k + \cdots + n^k$. In this paper, we derive a new formula expressing $2^{2k}$ times $S_{2k}(n)$ as a sum of $k$ terms involving the numbers in the $k$th row of the integer sequence A304330, which is closely related to the central factorial numbers of the second kind with even indices. Furthermore, we provide an alternative proof of Knuth's formula for $S_{2k}(n)$ and show that it can equally be expressed in terms of A304330. We also deduce the corresponding formulas for the odd-indexed power sums $S_{2k-1}(n)$. Finally, we determine the Faulhaber form of $S_{2k}(n)$ and $S_{2k+1}(n)$ in terms of the sequence A304330 and the Legendre-Stirling numbers of the first kind.

A Combinatorial Model of Numerical Semigroup

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $F(A)$ is the largest integer not belonging to the numerical semigroup $\langle A\rangle$ generated by $A$. The genus $g(A)$ is the number of positive integer elements that are not in $\langle A\rangle$. The Frobenius problem is to find $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ for a given sequence $A$. In this paper, we study the Frobenius problem of $A=\left(a,h_1a+b_1d,h_2a+b_2d,...,h_ka+b_kd\right)$ with some restrictions. An innovation is that $d$ can be a negative integer. In particular, when $A=\left(a,ba+d,b^2a+\frac{b^2-1}{b-1}d,...,b^ka+\frac{b^k-1}{b-1}d\right)$, we obtain formulas for $F(A)$ and $g(A)$ when $a\geq k-1-\frac{d-1}{b-1}$. Our formulas simplifies further for some special cases, such as Mersenne, Thabit and repunit numerical semigroups. We obtain explicit closed formulas for generalized Mersenne, Thabit and repunit numerical semigroups and some more general numerical semigroups. Finally, we partially solve an open problem for the Porth numerical semigroup.

Abstract:Using combinatorial techniques, we derive a recurrence identity that expresses an exponential power sum with negative powers in terms of another exponential power sum with positive powers. Consequently, we derive a formula for the power sum of the first $k$ natural numbers when the power is odd, which when used in combination with Faulhaber's formula for computing power sums helps us to retrieve the Bernoulli numbers in certain cases.

Abstract:For a positive integer $d$, let $p_d(n) := 0^d + 1^d + 2^d + \cdots + n^d$; i.e., $p_d(n)$ is the sum of the first $d^{\mathrm{th}}$-powers up to $n$. It's well known that $p_d(n)$ is a polynomial of degree $d+1$ in $n$. While this is usually proved by induction, once $d$ is not small it's a challenge as one needs to know the polynomial for the inductive step. We show how this difficulty can be bypassed by giving a simple proof that $p_d(n)$ is a polynomial of degree $d+1$ in $n$ by using L'Hopital's rule, and show how we can then determine the coefficients by Cramer's rule. This illustrates a general principle and the point of our paper: there's more than one path to a goal, different approaches have their advantages and disadvantages, and the more techniques one knows, the more likely one can successfully attack a problem.

Dedekind sums: a combinatorial-geometric viewpoint

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Abstract:Finite sums of powers of cosecants appear in a wide range of physical problems. We, through a unified approach which uses contour integrals and residues, establish the summation formulas for two general families of such sums. One of them is the family which was first studied and summed in closed form by Dowker [Phys. Rev. D 36, 3095 (1987)], while the other is related to it and has not been studied before. Our summation formulas of the Dowker sums involve only the Stirling numbers of the first kind and the (ordinary) Bernoulli polynomials and numbers, unlike the earlier summation formulas in which either the higher-order Bernoulli numbers and polynomials or the multiple sums involving the Bernoulli numbers and their products, were used. A great deal of other (known or presumably new) closed-form summations follows as straightforward corollaries to these formulas. Among them are two special cases of the celebrated Verlinde’s formula and numerous sums encountered in various physical problems by McCoy and Orrick [J. Stat. Phys. 83, 839 (1996)], Gervois and Mehta [J. Math. Phys. 36, 5098 (1995)], and Henkel and Lacki [Phys. Lett. A 138, 105 (1989)].

Abstract:Let $S$ be a fixed set of primes and let $(X_{l})_{l\geq 1}$ be the $X$-coordinates of the positive integer solutions $(X, Y)$ of the Pell equation $X^2-dY^2 = 1$ corresponding to a non-square integer $d>1$. We show that there are only a finite number of non-square integers $d>1$ such that there are at least two different elements of the sequence $(X_{l})_{l\geq 1}$ that can be represented as a sum of $S$-units with a fixed number of terms. Furthermore, we solve explicitly a particular case in which two of the $X$-coordinates are product of power of two and power of three.

Abstract:Our aim in this paper is to initiate the study of exponent semigroups for rational matrices. We prove that every numerical semigroup is the exponent semigroup of some rational matrix. We also obtain lower bounds on the size of such matrices and discuss the related class of power-integral matrices.
