Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of finding closed hypersurfaces with prescribed Weingarten curvature in a large class of Riemannian manifolds. Under some sufficient conditions, we obtain an existence result by establishing a priori estimates and standard degree theory for the admissible solutions to the prescribed curvature equation. We mainly show that the primary technique developed in Urbas, Wang and the second author’s work in 2004 is flexible enough to be used in more general ambient geometry.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed kth order symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution set for the case k >= n/2, provided the conformal class admits a k-admissible metric. These results have been proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky, Trudinger and Wang for the manifolds without boundary, and by Jin et al. and S. Chen for the locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the centroaffine Minkowski problem, namely the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space R n + 1 \mathbb {R}^{n+1} with prescribed centroaffine curvature. This problem can be described as a variational problem with a functional resembling Kantorovich’s dual functional in optimal transportation. By using the Gauss curvature flow, we obtain new conditions for the existence of solutions to the problem.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form. We prove that if a(n, H) <= S <= alpha( n, H)+ CnH2, where n >= 4 and H not equal 0, then S = alpha( n, H) and M is a Clifford torus Sn-1(r(1)) x S-1(r(2)). Here alpha(n, H) = n + n(3)/2(n -1) H-2 - n(n - 2)/2(n - 1) root n(2)H(4) + 4(n - 1) H-2, and C-n is a positive constant explicitly depending on n. The emphasis is that our gap theorem imposes no restriction on the range of mean curvature. Moreover, we obtain gap theorems for complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in space forms.
Rational curves on Hermitian manifolds

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:Let N be a (n+1)-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold with a compact Cauchy hypersurface. We consider curvature flows in N with different curvature functions F (including the mean curvature, the gauss curvature and the second elementary symmetric polynomial) and a volume preserving term. Under suitable assumptions we prove the long time existence of the flow and the exponential convergence of the corresponding graphs in the $C^\infty$-topology to a hypersurface of constant F-curvature. Furthermore we examine stability properties and foliations of constant F-curvature hypersurfaces.

Abstract:The problem of existence of spacelike hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in asymptotically flat spacetimes is considered for a class of asymptotically Schwarzschild spacetimes satisfying an interior condition. Using a barrier construction, a proof is given of the existence of complete hypersurfaces with constant mean cuvature which intersect null infinity in a regular cut.

Abstract:In this paper, we can obtain curvature estimates for spacelike admissible graphic hypersurfaces in the $(n+1)$-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$, and through which the existence of spacelike admissible graphic hypersurfaces, with prescribed $2$-th Weingarten curvature and Dirichlet boundary data, defined over a strictly convex domain in the hyperbolic plane $\mathscr{H}^{n}(1)\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_{1}$ of center at origin and radius $1$, can be proven.

Abstract:Within the synthetic-geometric framework of Lorentzian (pre-)length spaces developed in Kunzinger and Sämann (Ann. Glob. Anal. Geom. 54 (2018), no. 3, 399-447) we introduce a notion of a hyperbolic angle, an angle between timelike curves and related concepts such as timelike tangent cone and exponential map. This provides valuable technical tools for the further development of the theory and paves the way for the main result of the article, which is the characterization of timelike curvature bounds (defined via triangle comparison) with an angle monotonicity condition. Further, we improve on a geodesic non-branching result for spaces with timelike curvature bounded below.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a complete three dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary $\partial M$. Given smooth functions $K(x)>0$ and $c(x)$ defined on $M$ and $\partial M$, respectively, it is natural to ask whether there exist metrics conformal to $g$ so that under these new metrics, $K$ is the scalar curvature and $c$ is the boundary mean curvature. All such metrics can be described by a prescribing curvature equation with a boundary condition. With suitable assumptions on $K$,$c$ and $(M,g)$ we show that all the solutions of the equation can only blow up at finite points over each compact subset of $\bar M$, some of them may appear on $\partial M$. We describe the asymptotic behavior of the blowup solutions around each blowup point and derive an energy estimate as a consequence.

Abstract:We study the set of curvature functions which a given compact manifold with boundary can possess. First, we prove that the sign demanded by the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem is a necessary and sufficient condition for a given function to be the geodesic curvature or the Gaussian curvature of some conformally equivalent metric. Our approach allows us to solve problems that are impossible to solve in the pointwise conformal case. Moreover, we obtain a deep and more delicate information on pointwise conformal deformations. We prove new existence and nonexistence results for metrics with prescribed curvature in the conformal setting, which depend on the Euler characteristic.

Abstract:In this paper we give the existence of prescribed mean curvature (PMC) hypersurfaces in conformal product manifolds with (possibly empty) $C^{1,\alpha}$ fixed graphical boundaries under a barrier condition. This generalizes Gerhardt's result in conformally flat spaces. It provides new examples of the Plateau problem of PMC hypersurfaces with clear topology under high dimensions. In addition, if a quasi-decreasing condition of PMC functions is satisfied, such PMC hypersurfaces are $C^1$ graphs.

Abstract:Among other things, we prove the following two topological statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positive integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. Second, every rationally null-homologous, pi(1)-injectively immersed oriented closed 1-submanifold in a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has an equidegree finite cover which bounds an oriented connected compact pi(1)-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In, we exploit techniques developed by Kahn and Markovic but we only distill geometric and topological ingredients from those papers, so no hard analysis is involved in this article.

Abstract:We prove a synthetic Bonnet-Myers rigidity theorem for globally hyperbolic Lorentzian length spaces with global curvature bounded below by $K<0$ and an open distance realizer of length $L=\frac{\pi}{\sqrt{|K|}}$. In the course of the proof, we show that the space necessarily is a warped product with warping function $\cos:(-\frac{\pi}{2},\frac{\pi}{2})\to\mathbb{R}_+$.

Abstract:In the conformal (Möbius) geometry of submanifolds, using algebraic invariants of the shape operator to construct conformal invariants is a frequently used method. But it does not apply to [Formula: see text]-dim Lorentzian hypersurfaces of the last type, the minimal polynomial of whose shape operator has a triple root. In this paper, using the obstruction of some distribution to be integrable, a new method to construct conformal invariants is introduced. Using this method, a complete conformal invariant system is constructed for generic conformally flat Lorentzian hypersurfaces of the last type. We find that such kind of hypersurfaces allows an infinite parameter family of non-equivalent deformations, which implies they are more abundant than the other three types. For non-generic conformally flat Lorentzian hypersurfaces of the last type, the isometric geometry is studied and a fundamental theorem is obtained in this paper.

Abstract:We study the geometry of a weak Riemannian metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of compact spacelike Cauchy hypersurfaces in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. We show that the geodesic distance (i.e. the infimum of lengths of paths between two given points) is positive, and that the sectional curvature is well defined and non-positive.

Abstract:We show the existence of a deformation process of hypersurfaces from a product space $M_1\times R$ into another product space $M_2\times R$ such that the relation of the principal curvatures of the deformed hypersurfaces can be controlled in terms of the sectional curvatures or Ricci curvatures of $M_1$ and $M_2$. In this way, we obtain barriers which are used for proving existence or non existence of hypersurfaces with prescribed curvatures in a general product space $M\times R$.
