Abstract:After decades of development, stochastic dynamics has now become a relatively mature science field. The stochastic dynamics consists of two elements: the dynamical system which serves as a study object and whose input and output change over time; uncertainties that present in system properties, input and output which can be modeled as stochastic variables or stochastic process. Stochastic dynamics covers the following topics: modeling by characteristics of stochastic disturbance, methods, and procedures to obtain the stochastic response, stochastic stability, stochastic bifurcation, damage and reliability of the stochastic system. In brief, stochastic dynamics studies on qualitative and quantitative conditions of dynamical system under stochastic disturbances. This chapter introduces basic theories of stochastic dynamics.

Abstract:Stochastic approaches play a vital role in weather, climate, and, more in general, geophysics systems, addressing processes and scales beyond the resolution of deterministic models. Similar to equilibrium/non-equilibrium thermodynamics, intricate fast and local dynamics may not always be the primary focus. Practical applications often prioritize observables capturing phenomena at dominant temporal and spatial scales. Developing models for these "large-scale" observables, resulting from averaging fast and local contributions, can be simplified into Low Order Models (LOMs) with reduced degrees of freedom described by ordinary differential equations. Unresolved degrees of freedom are introduced as stochastic components, exhibiting either Markovian or non-Markovian characteristics. The challenge lies in deriving dependable stochastic differential equations representing the statistics of real large-scale, slow features in the climate/ocean system. While paralleling material physics, it is crucial to recognize that direct transfer of tools and outcomes is hindered by the non-Hamiltonian nature of climate/geophysical LOMs and the impracticality of a Markovian treatment of noise due to wide-ranging time scales. A critical examination of the conventional statistical mechanics approach, customized for such LOMs, becomes essential. To this end, we propose utilizing an approach based on the operator cumulant method, which has been recently revisited and generalized, along with the linear response method in a non-Hamiltonian setting. Formal results are then derived, and applications to some typical classes of examples are presented to clarify this approach.
Study on some partial differential equations in the atmospheric and oceanic dynamics

Abstract:We review some development of study on some partial differential equations in the atmospheric and oceanic dynamics. Firstly, we give some mathematical results of the surface quasi-geostrophic equations. Secondly, we recall some results on the global well-posedness and long-time dynamics for the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations describing the large-scale atmospheric and oceanic motions. At last, we review some results of stochastical partial differential equations in the atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, which include the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions to the initial boundary value problem for the stochastic primitive equations, and the existence of random attractors for the corresponding random dynamical system.
Multistability in a Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Reduced Order Model: Non-linear Temperature Equations

Abstract:Multistabilities were found in the ocean-atmosphere flow, in a reduced order ocean-atmosphere coupled model, when the non-linear temperature equations were solved numerically. In this paper we explain how the full non-linear Stefan-Bolzmann law was numerically implemented, and the resulting change to the system dynamics compared to the original model where these terms were linearised. Multiple stable solutions were found that display distinct ocean-atmosphere flows, as well as different Lyapunov stability properties. In addition, distinct Low Frequency Variability (LFV) behaviour was observed in stable attractors. We investigated the impact on these solutions of changing the magnitude of the ocean-atmospheric coupling, as well as the atmospheric emissivity to simulate an increasing green-house effect. Where multistabilities exist for fixed parameters, the possibility for tipping between solutions was investigated, but tipping did not occur in this version of the model where there is a constant solar forcing. This study was undertaken using a reduced-order quasi-geostrophic ocean-atmosphere model, consisting of two atmosphere layers, and one ocean layer, implemented in the Python programming language.

Abstract:Stochastic parametrisations of the interactions among disparate scales of motion in fluid convection are often used for estimating prediction uncertainty, which can arise due to inadequate model resolution, or incomplete observations, especially in dealing with atmosphere and ocean dynamics, where viscous and diffusive dissipation effects are negligible. This paper derives a family of three different types of stochastic parameterisations for the classical Euler-Boussinesq (EBC) equations for a buoyant incompressible fluid flowing under gravity in a vertical plane. These three stochastic models are inspired by earlier work on the effects of stochastic fluctuations on transport, see, e.g., Kraichnan (1968, 1994) and Doering et al.. (1994). They are derived here from variants of Hamilton's principle for the deterministic case when Stratonovich noise is introduced. The three models possess different variants of their corresponding Hamiltonian structures. One variant (SALT) introduces stochastic transport. Another variant (SFLT) introduces stochastic forcing , rather than stochastic transport . The third variant (LA SALT) introduces nonlocality in its stochastic transport, in the probabilistic sense of McKean (1966).
A Stochastic Conceptual Model for the Coupled ENSO and MJO

Abstract:Understanding the interactions between the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is essential to studying climate variabilities and predicting extreme weather events. Here, we develop a stochastic conceptual model for describing the coupled ENSO-MJO phenomenon. The model adopts a three-box representation of the interannual ocean component to characterize the ENSO diversity. For the intraseasonal atmospheric component, a low-order Fourier representation is used to describe the eastward propagation of the MJO. We incorporate decadal variability to account for modulations in the background state that influence the predominant types of El Nino events. In addition to dynamical coupling through wind forcing and latent heat, state-dependent noise is introduced to characterize the statistical interactions among these multiscale processes, improving the simulation of extreme events. The model successfully reproduces the observed non-Gaussian statistics of ENSO diversity and MJO spectra. It also captures the interactions between wind, MJO, and ENSO.

Abstract:The dynamical features of air-sea coupling waves and their stabilities in a simple coupled air-sea model in the tropics have been studied with respect to interaction occurring among different types of the free waves in the o-cean and in the atmosphere. It is pointed out that there exist a stable and an unstable air-sea interaction modes in the tropical coupled system , respectively. The propagation of the unstable mode relies greatly on the zonal space scale, i. e. only for wave length ranging from 5 000 km to 10 000 km can the disturbance unstably move slowly eastward. The waves that slowly propagate unstably eastward agree well with the observational facts. Finally,it is also proposed that the interaction between Kelvin wave in one medium and Rossby wave in another medium is a necessary condition for the occurrence of destabilization of the coupled air-sea system in the tropics.

Abstract:Stochastic methods are a crucial area in contemporary climate research and are increasingly being used in comprehensive weather and climate prediction models as well as reduced order climate models. Stochastic methods are used as subgrid-scale parameterizations as well as for model error representation, uncertainty quantification, data assimilation and ensemble prediction. The need to use stochastic approaches in weather and climate models arises because we still cannot resolve all necessary processes and scales in comprehensive numerical weather and climate prediction models. In many practical applications one is mainly interested in the largest and potentially predictable scales and not necessarily in the small and fast scales. For instance, reduced order models can simulate and predict large scale modes. Statistical mechanics and dynamical systems theory suggest that in reduced order models the impact of unresolved degrees of freedom can be represented by suitable combinations of deterministic and stochastic components and non-Markovian (memory) terms. Stochastic approaches in numerical weather and climate prediction models also lead to the reduction of model biases. Hence, there is a clear need for systematic stochastic approaches in weather and climate modelling. In this review we present evidence for stochastic effects in laboratory experiments. Then we provide an overview of stochastic climate theory from an applied mathematics perspectives. We also survey the current use of stochastic methods in comprehensive weather and climate prediction models and show that stochastic parameterizations have the potential to remedy many of the current biases in these comprehensive models.

Abstract:The primitive equations (PEs) are a basic model in the study of large scale oceanic and atmospheric dynamics. These systems form the analytical core of the most advanced general circulation models. For this reason and due to their challenging nonlinear and anisotropic structure, the PEs have recently received considerable attention from the mathematical community. On the other hand, in view of the complex multi-scale nature of the earth's climate system, many uncertainties appear that should be accounted for in the basic dynamical models of atmospheric and oceanic processes. In the climate community stochastic methods have come into extensive use in this connection. For this reason there has appeared a need to further develop the foundations of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations in connection with the PEs and more generally. In this work we study a stochastic version of the PEs. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong, pathwise solutions for these equations in dimension 3 for the case of a nonlinear multiplicative noise. The proof makes use of anisotropic estimates, estimates on the pressure and stopping time arguments.

Abstract:The possibility of interactions between oceanic and atmospheric oscillations with different temporal and spatial scales is examined with analytical solutions to idealized linear governing equations. With a reasonable choice for relevant parameters, the mesoscale oceanic features and the large-scale atmospheric oscillations can interact with each other and lead to unstable waves in the intraseasonal band in the specific coupled model presented in this study. This mechanism is different from the resonance mechanism, which requires similar temporal or spatial scales in the two media. Instead, this mechanism indicates that even in the cases in which the temporal and spatial scales are different but the dispersion relations (i.e., functions of frequency and wavenumber) of the oceanic and atmospheric oscillations are proximal, instabilities can still be generated due to the ocean-atmosphere coupling.

Abstract:In analogy with similar effects in adiabatic compressible fluid dynamics, the effects of buoyancy gradients on incompressible stratified flows are said to be "thermal." The thermal rotating shallow water (TRSW) model equations contain three small nondimensional parameters. These are the Rossby number, the Froude number, and the buoyancy parameter. Asymptotic expansion of the TRSW model equations in these three small parameters leads to the deterministic thermal versions of the Salmon's L1 (TL1) model and the thermal quasi-geostrophic (TQG) model, upon expanding in the neighborhood of thermal quasi-geostrophic balance among the flow velocity and the gradients of free surface elevation and buoyancy. The linear instability of TQG at high wavenumber tends to create circulation at small scales. Such a high-wavenumber instability could be unresolvable in many computational simulations, but its presence at small scales may contribute significantly to fluid transport at resolvable scales. Sometimes, such effects are modeled via "stochastic backscatter of kinetic energy." Here, we try another approach. Namely, we model "stochastic transport" in the hierarchy of models TRSW/TL1/TQG. The models are derived via the approach of <i>stochastic advection by Lie transport</i> (SALT) as obtained from a recently introduced stochastic version of the Euler–Poincaré variational principle. We also indicate the potential next steps for applying these models in uncertainty quantification and data assimilation of the rapid, high-wavenumber effects of buoyancy fronts at these three levels of description by using the data-driven stochastic parametrization algorithms derived previously using the SALT approach.

A sustained oscillation in a toy-model of the coupled atmosphere-ocean system

Abstract:Interaction between atmospheric mid-latitude flow and wind-driven ocean circulation is studied coupling two idealized low-order spectral models. The barotropic Charney-DeVore model with three components simulates a bimodal mid-latitude atmospheric circulation in a channel with two stable flow patterns induced by topography. The wind-driven ocean double gyre circulation in a square basin (of half the channel length) is modeled by an equivalent barotropic formulation of the Veronis model with 21 components, which captures Rossby-wave dynamics and nonlinear decadal variability. When coupled, the atmosphere forces the ocean by wind-stress while, simultaneously, the ocean affects the atmosphere by thermal forcing in terms of a vorticity source. Coupled atmosphere-ocean simulations show two stable flow patterns associated with the topographically induced atmospheric bimodality and a sustained oscillation due to interaction between atmospheric bimodality and oceanic Rossby dynamics. The oscillation is of inter-annual to inter-decadal periodicity and occurs in a reasonably wide parameter domain.

Coastal Tropical Convection in a Stochastic Modeling Framework

Abstract:Recent research has suggested that the overall dependence of convection near coasts on large-scale atmospheric conditions is weaker than over the open ocean or inland areas. This is due to the fact that in coastal regions convection is often supported by meso-scale land-sea interactions and the topography of coastal areas. As these effects are not resolved and not included in standard cumulus parametrization schemes, coastal convection is among the most poorly simulated phenomena in global models. To outline a possible parametrization framework for coastal convection we develop an idealized modeling approach and test its ability to capture the main characteristics of coastal convection. The new approach first develops a decision algorithm, or trigger function, for the existence of coastal convection. The function is then applied in a stochastic cloud model to increase the occurrence probability of deep convection when land-sea interactions are diagnosed to be important. The results suggest that the combination of the trigger function with a stochastic model is able to capture the occurrence of deep convection in atmospheric conditions often found for coastal convection. When coastal effects are deemed to be present the spatial and temporal organization of clouds that has been documented form observations is well captured by the model. The presented modeling approach has therefore potential to improve the representation of clouds and convection in global numerical weather forecasting and climate models.

Abstract:We present a numerical method for learning the dynamics of slow components of unknown multiscale stochastic dynamical systems. While the governing equations of the systems are unknown, bursts of observation data of the slow variables are available. By utilizing the observation data, our proposed method is capable of constructing a generative stochastic model that can accurately capture the effective dynamics of the slow variables in distribution. We present a comprehensive set of numerical examples to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:As a first step towards the numerical analysis of the stochastic primitive equations of the atmosphere and oceans, we study their time discretization by an implicit Euler scheme. From deterministic viewpoint the 3D Primitive Equations are studied with physically realistic boundary conditions. From probabilistic viewpoint we consider a wide class of nonlinear, state dependent, white noise forcings. The proof of convergence of the Euler scheme covers the equations for the oceans, atmosphere, coupled oceanic-atmospheric system and other geophysical equations. We obtain the existence of solutions weak in PDE and probabilistic sense, a result which is new by itself to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:We develop a stochastic parametrization, based on a `simple' deterministic model for the dynamics of steady longshore currents, that produces ensembles that are statistically consistent with field observations of these currents. Unlike deterministic models, stochastic parameterization incorporates randomness and hence can only match the observations in a statistical sense. Unlike statistical emulators, in which the model is tuned to the statistical structure of the observation, stochastic parametrization are not directly tuned to match the statistics of the observations. Rather, stochastic parameterization combines deterministic, i.e physics based models with stochastic models for the "missing physics" to create hybrid models, that are stochastic, but yet can be used for making predictions, especially in the context of data assimilation. We introduce a novel measure of the utility of stochastic models of complex processes, that we call {\em consistency of sensitivity}. We show, in the context of data assimilation, the stochastic parametrization of longshore currents achieves good results in capturing the statistics of observation {\em that were not used} in tuning the model.

Stochastic schemes for the perturbation of the atmospheric boundary conditions in ocean general circulation models

Abstract:Advancing the representation of uncertainties in ocean general circulation numerical models is required for several applications, ranging from data assimilation to climate monitoring and extended-range prediction systems. The atmospheric forcing represents one of the main uncertainty sources in numerical ocean models. Here, we formulate and revise different approaches to perturb the air-sea fluxes used within the atmospheric boundary conditions. In particular, perturbation of the fluxes is performed either through i) stochastic modulation of the air-sea transfer coefficients; ii) stochastic modulation of the air-sea flux tendencies; iii) coarse-graining of stochastic sub-grid computation of the fluxes; or iv) multiple bulk formulas. The schemes are implemented and tested in the NEMO4 ocean model, implemented at an eddy-permitting resolution on a domain covering the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. A series of 22-year 4-member ensemble experiments with different stochastic schemes are performed and analyzed for the period 2000-2021, and results are compared in terms of the ensemble mean and, when applicable, ensemble spread of the principal oceanic diagnostics. Results indicate that the schemes, in general, can significantly improve some verification skill scores (e.g. against drifter current speed, SST analyses, and hydrographic profiles) and, in some cases, enhance the mesoscale activity and weaken the large-scale circulation. The response, however, is different depending on the specific scheme, whose choice thus depends on the target application, as detailed in the paper. These findings foster the adoption of these schemes in both extended-range operational ocean forecasts and coupled long-range climate prediction systems, where the boundary conditions perturbations may contribute to performance increases.

Abstract:The stability of synchronized states (including equilibrium point, periodic orbit or chaotic attractor) in stochastic coupled dynamical systems (ordinary differential equations) is considered. A general approach is presented, based on the master stability function, Gershgorin disc theory and the extreme value theory in statistics, to yield constraints on the distribution of coupling to ensure the stability of synchronized dynamics. Three types of different behaviour: global-stable, exponential-stable and power-stable, are found, depending on the nature of the distribution of the interactions between units. Systems with specific coupling schemes are used as examples to illustrate our general method.
A global hybrid coupled model based on Atmosphere-SST feedbacks

Abstract:A global hybrid coupled model is developed, with the aim of studying the effects of ocean-atmosphere feedbacks on the stability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. The model includes a global ocean general circulation model and a statistical atmosphere model. The statistical atmosphere model is based on linear regressions of data from a fully coupled climate model on sea surface temperature both locally and hemispherically averaged, being the footprint of Atlantic meridional overturning variability. It provides dynamic boundary conditions to the ocean model for heat, freshwater and wind-stress. A basic but consistent representation of ocean-atmosphere feedbacks is captured in the hybrid coupled model and it is more than ten times faster than the fully coupled climate model. The hybrid coupled model reaches a steady state with a climate close to the one of the fully coupled climate model, and the two models also have a similar response (collapse) of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation to a freshwater hosing applied in the northern North Atlantic.
