Abstract: Through the Maximum principle we define the principal eigenvalue for a class of fully-nonlinear operators that are the non-variational equivalent of the p-Laplacian. We also obtain some a priori Holder estimates for non-negative solutions below that eigenvalue.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider equations involving a uniformly elliptic nonlocal operator where the function is uniformly bounded and radial decreasing. We establish some maximum principles for in bounded and unbounded domains. Since there is no decay condition in the unbounded domain, we make use of an approximate method to estimate the singular integral to get the maximum principle. As applications of these principles, by carrying out the method of moving planes, we give the monotonicity of solutions to the semilinear equation in the coercive epigraph, which extends the result of Dipierro‐Soave‐Valdinoci [Math. Ann.2017, 369(3‐4): 1283–1326]. Moreover, we obtain the radial symmetry and monotonicity of solutions to the generalized Schrödinger equation in a weaker condition, which is the improvement of the result of Tang [Math. Methods Appl. Sci. 2017, 40(7): 2596–2609]. In addition, the maximum principle also plays an important role in acquiring monotonicity of solutions and a Liouville theorem.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the proof of the existence of the principal eigenvalue and related eigenfunctions for fully nonlinear degenerate or singular uniformly elliptic equations posed in a punctured ball, in presence of a singular potential. More precisely, we analyze existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions (λ̄γ,uγ) of the equation |∇u|αF(D2uγ)+λ̄γuγ1+αrγ=0inB(0,1)∖{0},uγ=0on∂B(0,1) where uγ>0 in B(0,1) , α>−1 and γ>0 . We prove existence of radial solutions which are continuous on B(0,1) ̄ in the case γ<2+α , and a non existence result for γ>2+α . We also give the explicit value of λ̄2+α in the case of the Pucci's operators, which generalizes the Hardy–Sobolev constant for the Laplacian, and the previous results of Birindelli et al. [1] .

Abstract:In this paper, we study equations involving fully nonlinear nonlocal operators F-alpha (u(x)) = C-n,C-alpha P.V. integral(Rn) G(u(x) - u(z))/vertical bar x - z vertical bar(n+alpha) dz = f(u(x)), x is an element of R-n. We shall establish a maximum principle for anti-symmetric functions on any half space, and obtain key ingredients for proving the symmetry and monotonicity for positive solutions to the fully nonlinear nonlocal equations. Especially, a Liouville theorem is derived, which will be useful in carrying out the method of moving planes on unbounded domains for a variety of problems with fully nonlinear nonlocal operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider equations involving fully nonlinear non-local operators F_α(u(x)) ≡ C_n,α PV ∫ _ℝ^nG(u(x)-u(z))/|x-z|^n+α dz= f(x,u). We prove a maximum principle and obtain key ingredients for carrying on the method of moving planes, such as narrow region principle and decay at infinity . Then we establish radial symmetry and monotonicity for positive solutions to Dirichlet problems associated to such fully nonlinear fractional order equations in a unit ball and in the whole space, as well as non-existence of solutions on a half space. We believe that the methods developed here can be applied to a variety of problems involving fully nonlinear nonlocal operators. We also investigate the limit of this operator as α→2 and show that F_α(u(x)) →a(-△ u(x)) + b |▽u(x)|^2.

Abstract:Considerable work has gone into studying the properties of nonlocal diffusion equations. The existence of a principal eigenvalue has been a significant portion of this work. While there are good results for the existence of a principal eigenvalue equations on a bounded domain, few results exist for unbounded domains. On bounded domains, the Krein-Rutman theorem on Banach spaces is a common tool for showing existence. This article shows that generalized Krein-Rutman can be used on unbounded domains and that the theory of positive operators can serve as a powerful tool in the analysis of nonlocal diffusion equations. In particular, a useful sufficient condition for the existence of a principal eigenvalue is given.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the following fractional -Laplacian equations with the Hardy potential: where . Under some mild conditions on the nonlinearity , we establish the monotonicity and symmetry of positive solutions to the nonlinear equations involving the fractional -Laplacian with the Hardy potential in bounded domains. Moreover, we also prove a maximum principle along a sequence of approximate maximum points in unbounded domains. Our results are extensions of Chen and Li [4] and Dai, Liu and Wang [16].

In general, to ensure the validity of these kind of principles one has to consider some additional assumptions on the ambient manifold or on the differential operator. The present work aims to address, using both of these approaches, the problem of proving Maximum Principles for second order, elliptic operators acting on unbounded Riemannian domains under Dirichlet boundary conditions. Hence there is a natural division of this article in two distinct and standalone sections.

Abstract:This paper studies nonlinear eigenvalues problems with a double non homogeneity governed by the $p(x)$-Laplacian operator, under the Dirichlet boundary condition on a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N(N\geq2)$. According to the type of the nonlinear part (sublinear, superlinear) we use the Lagrange multiplier's method, the Ekeland's variational principle and the Mountain-Pass theorem to show that the spectrum includes a continuous set of eigenvalues, which can in some contexts be all the set $\mathbb{R_+^{*}}$. Moreover, we show that the smallest eigenvalue obtained from the Lagrange multipliers is exactly the first eigenvalue in the Ljusternik-Schnirelman eigenvalues sequence. On the maximum principle for general linear elliptic equations

Abstract:We consider maximum principles and related estimates for linear second order elliptic partial differential operators in n-dimensional Euclidean space, which improve previous results, with H-J Kuo, through sharp Lp dependence on the drift coefficient b. As in our previous work, the ellipticity is determined through the principal coefficient matrix A lying in sub-cones of the positive cone, which are dual cones of the Garding k-cones. Our main results are maximum principles for bounded domains, which extend those of Aleksandrov in the case k = n, together with extensions to unbounded domains, depending on appropriate integral norms of A, and corresponding local maximum principles. We also consider applications to local estimates in the uniformly elliptic case, including extensions of the Krylov-Safonov Holder and Harnack estimates.

Abstract:We consider eigenvalue problems for general elliptic operators of arbitrary order subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on open subsets of the euclidean N-dimensional space. We prove stability results for the dependence of the eigenvalues upon variation of the mass density and we prove a maximum principle for extremum problems related to mass density perturbations which preserve the total mass.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximum principles for Laplacian and fractional Laplacian with critical integrability. We first consider the critical cases for Laplacian with zero-order term and first-order term. It is well known that for the Laplacian with zero-order term -Δ +c(x) in B_1 , c(x)∈ L^p(B_1) ( B_1⊂R^n ), the critical case for the maximum principle is p=n/2 . We show that the critical condition c(x)∈L^n/2(B_1) is not enough to guarantee the strong maximum principle. For the Laplacian with first-order term -Δ +b⃗(x) ( b⃗(x)∈ L^p(B_1) ), the critical case is p=n . In this case, we establish the maximum principle and strong maximum principle for Laplacian with first-order term. We also extend some of the maximum principles above to the fractional Laplacian. We replace the classical lower semi-continuous condition on solutions for the fractional Laplacian with some integrability condition. Then we establish a series of maximum principles for fractional Laplacian under some integrability condition on the coefficients. These conditions are weaker than the previous regularity conditions. The weakened conditions on the coefficients and the non-locality of the fractional Laplacian bring in some new difficulties. Some new techniques are developed.

Abstract:We study an {\it indefinite weighted eigenvalue problem} for an operator of {\it mixed-type} (that includes both the classical {\it $p$-Laplacian} and the {\it fractional $p$-Laplacian}) in a bounded open subset $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N \,(N\geq2)$ with {\it Lipschitz boundary} $\partial \Omega$, which is given by \begin{align*} -\Delta_p u + (-\Delta_p)^su+V(x)|u|^{p-2}u&=\lambda g(x)|u|^{p-2}u~\text{in}~\Omega, u&=0~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N\setminus\Omega, \end{align*} where $\lambda >0$ is a parameter, exponents $0<s<1<p<N$, and $V, g\in L^q(\Omega)$ for $q\in \left(\frac{N}{sp}, \infty\right)$ with $V\geq 0, g > 0$ a.e. in $\Omega$. Using the variational tools together with a {\it weak comparison} and {\it strong maximum principles}, we investigate the existence and uniqueness of {\it principal eigenvalue} and discuss its qualitative properties. Moreover, with the help of {\it Ljusternik-Schnirelman category theory}, it is proved that there exists a {\it nondecreasing sequence of positive eigenvalues} which goes to infinity. Further, we show that {\it the set of all positive eigenvalues is closed}, and {\it eigenfunctions} associated with every {\it positive eigenvalue} are bounded.

Maximum principles for weakly $1$-coercive operators with applications to capillary and prescribed mean curvature graphs

Abstract:In this paper we establish maximum principles for weakly 1-coercive operators $L$ on complete, non-compact Riemannian manifolds $M$. In particular, we search for conditions under which one can guarantee that solutions $u$ of differential equations of the form $L(u)\geq f(u)$ satisfy $f(u)\leq 0$ on $M$. The case of weakly $p$-coercive operators with $p>1$, including the $p$-Laplacian and in particular the Laplace-Beltrami operator for $p=2$, has been considered in a recent paper of ours. As a consequence of the main results we infer comparison principles for that kind of operators. Furthermore we apply them to geometric situations dealing with the mean curvature operator, which is a typical weakly 1-coercive operator. We first consider the case of $\mathcal C^1$ operators $L$ acting on functions $u$ of class $\mathcal C^2$ and, in the last section of the paper, we show how our results can be extended to the case of less regular operators $L$ acting on functions $u$ which are just continuous and locally $W^{1,1}$ regular.

Abstract:This paper deals with explicit upper and lower bounds for principal eigenvalues and the maximum principle associated to generalized Lane-Emden systems (GLE systems, for short). Regarding the bounds, we generalize the upper estimate of Berestycki, Nirenberg and Varadhan [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1994), 47-92] for the first eigenvalue of linear scalar problems on general domains to the case of strongly coupled GLE systems with $m \geqslant 2$ equations on smooth domains. The explicit lower estimate we obtain is also used to derive a maximum principle to GLE systems relying in terms of quantitative ingredients. Furthermore, as applications of the previous results, upper and lower estimates for the first eigenvalue of weighted poly-Laplacian eigenvalue problems with $L^p$ weights $(p>n)$ and Navier boundary condition are obtained. Moreover, a strong maximum principle depending on the domain and the weight function for scalar problems involving the poly-Laplacian operator is also established.

Positive solutions to nonlinear elliptic problems involving Sobolev exponent

Abstract:In this paper we consider nonlinear elliptic PDEs of the type $$-\Delta_p u+a(x)|u|^{p-2}u=|u|^{p^*-2}u \qquad \mbox{ in }\Omega,$$ where $1<p<N$ and $p^*=Np/(N-p)$ is the critical Sobolev exponent, and allowing the asymptotic behavior of the weight function $a$ to be sensitive to the direction. We provide a unified variational approach to obtain existence of distinct solutions in either the unbounded case $\Omega=\mathbb{R}^N$ or when $\Omega$ is a smooth bounded domain. A key point is a precise description of the compactness properties of certain sequences of approximating solutions (Palais-Smale sequences), for which we use novel observations on nonexistence in certain regimes. Most of our main results are new in the case of the classical Laplace operator, $p=2$.

Abstract:We prove the existence of the first eigenvalue and an associated eigenfunction with Dirichlet condition for the complex Monge-Ampère operator on a bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain in $\C^n$. We show that the eigenfunction is plurisubharmonic, smooth with bounded Laplacian in $\Omega$ and boundary values $0$. Moreover it is unique up to a positive multiplicative constant. To this end, we follow the strategy used by P.L. Lions in the real case. However, we have to prove a new theorem on the existence of solutions for some special complex degenerate Monge-Ampère equations. This requires establishing new a priori estimates of the gradient and Laplacian of such solutions using methods and results of L. Caffarelli, J.J. Kohn, L. Nirenberg and J. Spruck \cite{CKNS85} and B. Guan \cite{GuanB98}. Finally we provide a Pluripotential variational approach to the problem and using our new existence theorem, we prove a Rayleigh quotient type formula for the first eigenvalue of the complex Monge-Ampère operator.

Abstract:In this paper we present a Neumann type maximum principle for the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds. A key point is the simple geometric nature of the constant in the a priori estimate of this maximum principle. In particular, this maximum principle can be applied to manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and diameter bounded from above to yield a maximum estimate without dependence on a positive lower bound for the volume.
