Abstract:The Jacobian conjecture is a well-known open problem in affine algebraic geometry that asks if any polynomial endomorphism of the affine space $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{C}}^{n}$ ($n\geq2$) with jacobian $1$ is an automorphism. We present a survey about some results around this conjecture and we discuss an arithmetic aspect of this conjecture due to Essen-Lipton. We investigate some cases of this arithmetic approach showing the close relationship between the Jacobian Conjecture and the problem of counting $\mathbb{F}_p$-points of an affine scheme.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a one-way horseshoe for topological dynamical systems and show that, quite surprisingly, it plays the same role in the theory of polynomial entropy as the notion of a horseshoe plays in the theory of topological entropy. Indeed, we show that the existence of a one-way horseshoe gives a lower bound for polynomial entropy and for maps of the interval also conversely, polynomial entropy is given by one-way horseshoes of iterates of the map, analogously to Misiurewicz's theorem on topological entropy and standard ‘two-way’ horseshoes. As a consequence we get a rigidity result that if the polynomial entropy of an interval map is finite, then it is an integer. Furthermore, for interval maps of Sharkovskii type 1 the polynomial entropy can also be computed by what we call chains of essential intervals. We further describe the possible values of polynomial entropy of maps of all Sharkovskii types. We then apply our tools to the classic logistic family, showing that the polynomial entropy increases weakly monotonically with the parameter, making discrete jumps up at bifurcation points along the period-doubling cascade. On the other hand, we show that in the class of all continua the polynomial entropy of continuous maps is very flexible. For every value α ∈ [ 0 , ∞ ] there is a homeomorphism on a continuum with polynomial entropy α. We discuss also possible values of the polynomial entropy of continuous maps on dendrites.

Strong probabilistic stability in holomorphic families of endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^k(\mathbb{C})$ and polynomial-like maps

Abstract:We prove that, in stable families of endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^k(\mathbb{C})$, all invariant measures whose measure-theoretic entropy is strictly larger than $(k-1)\log d$ at a given parameter can be followed holomorphically with the parameter in all the parameter space. As a consequence, almost all points (with respect to any such measure at any parameter) in the Julia set can be followed holomorphically without intersections. This generalizes previous results by Berteloot, Dupont, and the first author for the measure of maximal entropy, and provides a parallel in this setting to the probabilistic stability of Hénon maps by Berger-Dujardin-Lyubich. Our proof relies both on techniques from the theory of stability/bifurcation in any dimension and on an explicit lower bound for the Lyapunov exponents for an ergodic measure in terms of its measure-theoretic entropy, due to de Thélin and Dupont. A local version of our result holds also for all measures supported on the Julia set with just strictly positive Lyapunov exponents and not charging the post-critical set. Analogous results hold in families of polynomial-like maps of large topological degree. In this case, as part of our proof, we also give a sufficient condition for the positivity of the Lyapunov exponents of an ergodic measure for a polynomial-like map in any dimension in term of its measure-theoretic entropy, generalizing to this setting the analogous result by de Thélin and Dupont valid on $\mathbb{P}^k(\mathbb{C})$.

Abstract:A class of planar diffeomorphims is formulated, with infinitely many coexisting Smale horseshoes, where the Lebesgue measure of the parameters with such strange dynamics is infinite. On each horseshoe, there exists a uniformly hyperbolic invariant set, on which the map is topologically conjugate to the two-sided full-shift on two symbols. Moreover, the topological entropy is infinite in certain parameter regions.

Abstract:The main result of this paper is to prove the strong real Jacobian conjecture under the symmetric assumption and reveals the link between it and the Jacobian conjecture. Precisely, we assume that $F: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n$ is of $C^1$ map, $n\geqslant 2$, if for some $\varepsilon >0$, $ 0\notin Spec(F)~~\mbox{and}~ Spec(F+F^T) \subseteq (-\infty,-\varepsilon)~\mbox{or} ~(\varepsilon,+\infty),$ where $Spec (F)$ denotes all eigenvalues of $JF$ and $Spec (F+F^T)$ denotes all eigenvalues of $JF+JF^T$, then we show that $F$ is injective. It is proved by using a minimax argument.

Abstract:We consider partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms $f$ with a one-dimensional central direction such that the unstable entropy exceeds the stable entropy. Our main result proves that such maps have a finite number of ergodic measures of maximal entropy. Moreover, any $C^{1+}$ diffeomorphism near $f$ in the $C^1$ topology possesses at most the same number of ergodic measures of maximal entropy. Our contribution is in extending the findings in [4] to arbitrary dimensions. We believe our technique, essentially distinct from the one in that paper, is robust and may find applications in further contexts.

Holonomy of parabolic geometries near isolated higher-order fixed points

Abstract:For Cartan geometries admitting automorphisms with isotropies satisfying a particular, loosely dynamical property on their model geometries, we demonstrate the existence of an open subset of the geometry with trivial holonomy. This property, which generalizes characteristics of isotropies corresponding to isolated higher-order fixed points in parabolic geometries that are known to require a nearby open subset to have vanishing curvature, only relies upon the behavior of the isotropy in the model geometry, and therefore applies regardless of initial curvature assumptions, such as regularity or normality. Along the way to proving our main results, we also derive a couple of results for working with holonomy, relating to limits of sequences of developments and the existence of antidevelopments, that are useful in their own right. To showcase the effectiveness of the techniques developed, we use them to completely characterize all almost c-projective and almost quaternionic structures that admit a nontrivial automorphism with a higher-order fixed point, as well as all nondegenerate partially integrable almost CR structures that admit a higher-order fixed point with non-null isotropy.

Some rigidity results for polynomial automorphisms of C^2

Abstract:We prove several new rigidity results for polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb C^2$ with positive entropy. A first result is that a complex slice of the (forward or backward) Julia set is never a smooth, or even rectifiable, curve. We also show that such an automorphism cannot preserve a global holomorphic foliation, nor a real-analytic foliation with complex leaves. These results are used to show that under mild assumptions, two real-analytically conjugate automorphisms are polynomially conjugate. For mappings defined over a number field, we also study the fields of definition of multipliers of saddle periodic orbits.

Geometric aspects of the Jacobian of a hyperplane arrangement

Abstract:An embedding of the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,3}$ in $\mathbb{P}^2$ gives rise to both a line arrangement and a bar-and-joint framework. For a generic placement of the six vertices, the graded Betti numbers of the logarithmic module of derivations of the line arrangement are constant, but an example due to Ziegler shows that the graded Betti numbers are different when the points lie on a conic. Similarly, in rigidity theory a generic embedding of $K_{3,3}$ in the plane is an infinitesimally rigid bar-and-joint framework, but the framework is infinitesimally flexible when the points lie on a conic. In this paper we develop the theory of weak perspective representations of hyperplane arrangements to formalize and generalize the striking connection between hyperplane arrangements and rigidity theory that this example suggests. In particular, we seek to understand how the interplay of combinatorics and geometry influence algebraic structures associated to an arrangement, such as the saturation of the Jacobian ideal of the arrangement. We make connections between examples and constructions from rigidity theory and interesting phenomena in the study of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:We study geometrically finite one-dimensional mappings. These are a subspace of $C^{1+\alpha}$ one-dimensional mappings with finitely many, critically finite critical points. We study some geometric properties of a mapping in this subspace. We prove that this subspace is closed under quasisymmetrical conjugacy. We also prove that if two mappings in this subspace are topologically conjugate, they are then quasisymmetrically conjugate. We show some examples of geometrically finite one-dimensional mappings.

An appendix presents features of the semiring of Newton polygons, because the product of Jacobian Newton polygons corresponds to the Thom-Sebastiani sum of hypersurfaces. Abstract:Let $(F,G)$ be a Jacobian pair with $d=w\text{-deg}(F)$ and $e=w\text{-deg}(G)$ for some direction $w$. A generalized Magnus' formula approximates $G$ as $\sum_{\gamma\ge 0} c_\gamma F^{\frac{e-\gamma}{d}}$ for some complex numbers $c_\gamma$. We develop an approach to the two-dimensional Jacobian conjecture, aiming to minimize the use of terms corresponding to $\gamma>0$. As an initial step in this approach, we define and study the inner polynomials of $F$ and $G$. The main result of this paper shows that the northeastern vertex of the Newton polygon of each inner polynomial is located within a specific region. As applications of this result, we introduce several conjectures and prove some of them for special cases.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a polynomial-like map with dominant topological degree $d_t\geq 2$ and let $d_{k-1}<d_t$ be its dynamical degree of order $k-1$. We show that the support of every ergodic measure whose measure-theoretic entropy is strictly larger than $\log \sqrt{d_{k-1} d_t}$ is supported on the Julia set, i.e., the support of the unique measure of maximal entropy $\mu$. The proof is based on the exponential speed of convergence of the measures $d_t^{-n}(f^n)^*\delta_a$ towards $\mu$, which is valid for a generic point $a$ and with a controlled error bound depending on $a$. Our proof also gives a new proof of the same statement in the setting of endomorphisms of $\mathbb P^k(\mathbb C)$ - a result due to de Thélin and Dinh - which does not rely on the existence of a Green current.

Abstract:Let T be the nilpotent group of 4 x 4 real upper triangular matrices. In this note we show that the Euler equations of certain left-invariant riemannian metrics on T have a horseshoe. We also show, with the aid of a numerical computation of a Melnikov-type integral, that the Euler equations of the sub-riemannian Carnot metric on T has a horseshoe. This sharpens an earlier result of Montgomery, Shapiro and Stolin who had shown that the equations are algebraically non-integrable.

Abstract:Let $(u_j)_j$ be a sequence of maps in $W^{1,2}(\Omega;\mathbb R^3)$, where $\Omega$ is a domain in $\mathbb R^3$. When can we conclude that its weak limit $u$ has non-negative Jacobian a.e.? Hencl and Onninen shows that it is sufficient that each $u_j$ is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism, using an ingenious analysis of a topological invariant called the linking number. Following their approach, we show that if each $u_j$ is a generalised axisymmetric map that has positive Jacobian a.e. and is one-to-one a.e., then $\det Du \ge 0$ a.e. Our proof is based on using the divergence identities to control the sign of the linking numbers of the images of links in $\Omega$ under $u_j$.

Abstract:We study an explicit $(2g-1)$-dimensional family of Jacobian varieties of dimension $\frac{d-1}2(g-1)$, arising from quotient curves of unramified cyclic coverings of prime degree $d$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge 2$. By using a deformation argument, we prove that the generic element of the family is simple. Furthermore, we completely describe their endomorphism algebra, and we show that they admit a rank $\frac{d-1}2-1$ group of non-polarized automorphisms. As an application of these results, we prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map for étale cyclic coverings of hyperelliptic curves of odd prime degree under some slight numerical restrictions. This result generalizes in several directions previous results on genus 2.
