Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.

Abstract:Mixed Tate motives are central objects in the study of cohomology groups of algebraic varieties and their arithmetic invariants. They also play a crucial role in a wide variety of questions related to multiple zeta values and polylogarithms, algebraic K-theory, hyperbolic geometry, and particle physics among others. This survey article is an introduction to mixed Tate motives and their many facets. It was written for the proceedings of the Summer School on Motives and Arithmetic Groups held in Strasbourg in June 2022.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{k}$ be a field of characteristic $p$. We introduce a formalism of mixed sheaves with coefficients in $\mathbb{k}$ and showcase its use in representation theory. More precisely, we construct for all quasi-projective schemes $X$ over an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_p$ a $\mathbb{k}$-linear triangulated category of motives on $X$. Using work of Ayoub (2007), Cisinski-Deglise (2012) and Geisser-Levine (2000), we show that this system of categories has a six functors formalism and computes higher Chow groups. Indeed, it behaves similarly to other categories of sheaves that one is used to. We attempt to make its construction also accessible to non-experts. We then consider the subcategory of stratified mixed Tate motives defined for affinely stratified varieties $X$, discuss perverse and parity motives and prove formality results. As an example, we combine these results and Soergel (2000) to construct a geometric and graded version of Soergel's modular category $\mathscr O(G)$, consisting of rational representations of a split semisimple group $G/\mathbb{k}$, and thereby equip it with a full six functor formalism (see Riche-Soergel-Williamson (2014) and Achar-Riche (2016) for other approaches). The main idea of using motives in geometric representation theory in this way as well as many results about stratified mixed Tate motives are directly borrowed from Soergel and Wendt, who tell the story in characteristic zero.

Abstract:In this article we further the study of noncommutative numerical motives. By exploring the change-of-coefficients mechanism, we start by improving some of our previous main results. Then, making use of the notion of Schur-finiteness, we prove that the category NNum(k)_F of noncommutative numerical motives is (neutral) super-Tannakian. As in the commutative world, NNum(k)_F is not Tannakian. In order to solve this problem we promote periodic cyclic homology to a well-defined symmetric monoidal functor HP on the category of noncommutative Chow motives. This allows us to introduce the correct noncommutative analogues C_NC and D_NC of Grothendieck's standard conjectures C and D. Assuming C_NC, we prove that NNum(k)_F can be made into a Tannakian category NNum'(k)_F by modifying its symmetry isomorphism constraints. By further assuming D_NC, we neutralize the Tannakian category NNum'(k)_F using HP. Via the (super-)Tannakian formalism, we then obtain well-defined noncommutative motivic (super-)Galois groups. Finally, making use of Deligne-Milne's theory of Tate triples, we construct explicit homomorphisms relating these new noncommutative motivic (super-)Galois groups with the classical ones.

Abstract:We study tropical friezes and cluster-additive functions associated to symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrices in the framework of Fock-Goncharov duality in cluster algebras. In particular, we generalize and prove a conjecture of C. M. Ringel on cluster-additive functions associated to arbitrary Cartan matrices of finite type. For a Fock-Goncharov dual pair of positive spaces of finite type, we use tropical friezes and cluster-additive functions to explicitly express the Fock-Goncharov pairing between their tropical points and the bijections between global monomials on one and tropical points of the other.

Abstract:Let $E/F$ be a finite field extension with every intermediate field being Galois over $F$. Given a reductive group $G$ over $F$ such that $G_E$ is of inner type, we define its A-upper motives. These motives are indecomposable and naturally related with the indecomposable summands in the motives of spectra of intermediate fields in $E/F$. We show that motives of projective homogeneous varieties under $G$ are isomorphic to direct sums of Tate shifts of A-upper motives. Based on that, we get a classification of the motives of projective homogeneous varieties under absolutely simple groups of type not $^6\!D_4$, by means of their higher Artin-Tate traces. We also show how Tits indexes over suitable field extensions determine motivic equivalence classes for these algebraic groups.

Congruences of Galois representations attached to effective $A$-motives over global function fields

Abstract:This article investigates congruences of $\mathfrak{p}$-adic representations arising from effective $A$-motives defined over a global function field $K$. We give a criterion for two congruent $\mathfrak{p}$-adic representations coming from strongly semi-stable effective $A$-motives to be isomorphic up to semi-simplification when restricted to decomposition groups of suitable places of $K$. This is a function field analog of Ozeki-Taguchi's criterion for $\ell$-adic representations of number fields. Motivated by a non-existence conjecture on abelian varieties over number fields stated by Rasmussen and Tamagawa, we also show that there exist no strongly semi-stable effective $A$-motives with some constrained.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a reductive complex algebraic group. We fix a pair of opposite Borel subgroups and consider the corresponding semiinfinite orbits in the affine Grassmannian $Gr_G$. We prove Simon Schieder's conjecture identifying his bialgebra formed by the top compactly supported cohomology of the intersections of opposite semiinfinite orbits with $U(\check{\mathfrak n})$ (the universal enveloping algebra of the positive nilpotent subalgebra of the Langlands dual Lie algebra $\check{\mathfrak g}$). To this end we construct an action of Schieder bialgebra on the geometric Satake fiber functor. We propose a conjectural construction of Schieder bialgebra for an arbitrary symmetric Kac-Moody Lie algebra in terms of Coulomb branch of the corresponding quiver gauge theory.

Abstract:We use a unified elementary approach to prove the second part of classical, mixed, super, and mixed super Schur-Weyl dualities for general linear groups and supergroups over an infinite ground field of arbitrary characteristic. These dualities describe the endomorphism algebras of the tensor space and mixed tensor space, respectively, over the group algebra of the symmetric group and the Brauer wall algebra, respectively. Our main new results are the second part of the mixed Schur-Weyl dualities and mixed super Schur-Weyl dualities over an infinite ground field of positive characteristic.

Abstract:Already in the 1960s Grothendieck understood that one could obtain an almost entirely satisfactory theory of motives over a finite field when one assumes the full Tate conjecture. In this note we prove a similar result for motivic complexes. In particular Beilinson's Q-algebra of "correspondences at the generic point" is then defined for all connected varieties. We compute this for all smooth projective varieties (hence also for varieties birational to such a variety).

Abstract:We prove, under suitable assumptions, that $p$-torsion Tate-Shafarevich classes for elliptic curves over the rationals are visible in quotients of Jacobians of modular curves, as predicted by a conjecture of Jetchev-Stein. The key ingredient is the non-triviality of the Bertolini-Darmon bipartite Kolyvagin system, which implies that suitable cohomology classes of the system form a basis of the Selmer group modulo $p$.

Eichler-Shimura theory for general congruence subgroups

Abstract:This article aims to extend the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism theorem for cusp forms on a congruence subgroup of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ to the whole space of modular forms. To regularize the Eichler-Shimura integral at infinity we reconstruct the standard formalism of the Eichler-Shimura theory starting from an abstract differential definition of the integral. The article also provides new proof of Hida's twisted Eichler-Shimura isomorphism for the modular forms with nebentypus using the isomorphism theorem mentioned above. We compute the Eichler-Shimura homomorphism for a family of Eisenstein series on $\Gamma(N)$ and prove algebraicity results for the cohomology classes attached to a basis of the space of Eisenstein series on a general congruence subgroup.

Brauer-Manin obstructions for homogeneous spaces of commutative affine algebraic groups over global fields

Abstract:Questions related to Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation for homogeneous spaces of tori over a number field are well-studied, generally using arithmetic duality theorems, starting with works of Sansuc and of Colliot-Thélène. In this article, we prove the analogous statements (and include obstructions to strong approximation over finite places) in the general case of a commutative affine group scheme $G$ of finite type over a global field in any characteristic. We also study finiteness of different variants of the second Tate-Shafarevich kernel (such as $S$-kernels and $\omega$-kernels) of the Cartier dual of $G$. All this is made possible by some recent theoretical advancements in positive characteristic, namely the finiteness theorems of B. Conrad and the generalized Tate duality of Z. Rosengarten.

Abstract:We prove the geometric Satake equivalence for mixed Tate motives over the integral motivic cohomology spectrum. This refines previous versions of the geometric Satake equivalence for split groups and power series affine Grassmannians. Our new geometric results include Whitney-Tate stratifications of Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannians and cellular decompositions of semi-infinite orbits. With future global applications in mind, we also achieve an equivalence relative to a power of the affine line. Finally, we use our equivalence to give Tannakian constructions of Deligne's modification of the dual group and a modified form of Vinberg's monoid over the integers.

Abstract:We define a congruence module $\Psi_A(M)$ associated to a surjective $\mathcal O$-algebra morphism $\lambda\colon A \to \mathcal{O}$, with $\mathcal{O}$ a discrete valuation ring, $A$ a complete noetherian local $\mathcal{O}$-algebra regular at $\mathfrak{p}$, the kernel of $\lambda$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. We establish a numerical criterion for $M$ to have a free direct summand over $A$ of positive rank. It is in terms of the lengths of $\Psi_A(M)$ and the torsion part of $\mathfrak{p}/\mathfrak{p}^2$. It generalizes results of Wiles, Lenstra, and Diamond, that deal with the case when the codimension of $\mathfrak{p}$ is zero. Number theoretic applications include integral (non-minimal) $R=\mathbb T$ theorems in situations of positive defect conditional on certain standard conjectures. Here $R$ is a deformation ring parametrizing certain Galois representations and $\mathbb T$ is a Hecke algebra. An example is a modularity lifting for 2-dimensional $\ell$-adic Galois representations over an imaginary quadratic field. The proofs combine our commutative algebra results with a generalization due to Calegari and Geraghty of the patching method of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles and level raising arguments that go back to Ribet. The results provide new evidence in favor of the intriguing, and as yet fledgling, torsion analog of the classical Langlands correspondence. We also prove unconditional integral $R=\mathbb T$ results for Hecke algebras $\mathbb T$ acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves over $\mathbb Q$. This leads to a torsion Jacquet--Langlands correspondence comparing integral Hecke algebras acting on weight one cohomology of Shimura curves and modular curves. In this case the cohomology has abundant torsion and so our correspondence cannot be deduced by means of the classical Jacquet--Langlands correspondence.

On $12$-congruences of elliptic curves

Abstract:We construct infinite families of pairs of (geometrically non-isogenous) elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $12$-torsion subgroups that are isomorphic as Galois modules. This extends previous work of Chen and Fisher where it is assumed that the underlying isomorphism of $12$-torsion subgroups respects the Weil pairing. Our approach is to compute explicit birational models for the modular diagonal quotient surfaces which parametrise such pairs of elliptic curves. A key ingredient in the proof is to construct simple (algebraic) conditions for the $2$, $3$, or $4$-torsion subgroups of a pair of elliptic curves to be isomorphic as Galois modules. These conditions are given in terms of the $j$-invariants of the pair of elliptic curves.

We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme over $K_0$ via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K_0$ coming from a codimension 1 point of $\text{Spec}\; k[[x,y]]$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes and for tori. We apply these results to the study of the obstruction to the local-global principle for $K_0$-torsors under a connected linear algebraic group, answering in that way a question of Colliot-Thélène, Parimala and Suresh, and to the weak approximation for tori over $K_0$. On the observability of Galois representations and the Tate conjecture

Abstract:The Tate conjecture has two parts: i) Tate classes are linear combination of algebraic classes, ii) semisimplicity of Galois representations (for smooth projective varieties). B. Moonen proved that i) implies ii) in characteristic 0, using $p$-adic Hodge theory. We show that an unconditional result lies behind this implication: the {\it observability} of arithmetic monodromy groups of geometric origin (in any characteristic) - which leads to a sharpening of Moonen's result. We also discuss another aspect of the Tate conjecture related to the transcendence of $p$-adic periods.
