Abstract:We discuss minimally supersymmetric AdS$_3$ flux vacua of massive type IIA supergravity on G2-orientifolds. We find that configurations that are scale-separated can be within finite distance from non scale-separated ones, while both remain at large volume, weak coupling and have moduli stabilization. The transition is achieved with the use of a D4-brane modulus, which allows the $F_4$ flux to jump, and has an effective potential always accessible to the three-dimensional low-energy theory. Our analysis further allows us to check the distance conjecture quantitatively, as we can track explicitly the masses of the KK modes.

Type II orientifold flux vacua in 3D

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of type II orientifold flux vacua in three dimensions including gauge and metric fluxes, O-planes and D-branes. We derive simple flux models (we dub them RSTU-models) that admit a description in terms of gauged supergravities with half-maximal $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supersymmetry in three dimensions. As a landscape appetizer, we present various multi-parametric families of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric AdS$_{3}$ and Mkw$_{3}$ vacua. Remarkably, negative masses turn out to be always absent in the spectrum of scalar fluctuations, thus making all the vacua perturbatively stable within half-maximal supergravity. We provide examples of non-supersymmetric type IIB AdS$_{3}$ flux vacua which feature parametrically-controlled scale separation and come along with integer-valued conformal dimensions of the would-be dual CFT$_{2}$ operators. We also comment on the implications of our results in light of the Swampland Program.

Abstract:We show that the generalised geometry formalism provides a new approach to the description of higher-fermion terms in gauged $\mathcal N=1$ supergravity in ten dimensions, which does not appeal to supercovariantisation or superspace. We find expressions containing only five higher-fermion terms across the action and supersymmetry transformations, working in the second-order formalism.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Abstract:We perform a systematic analysis of generic string flux compactifications, making use of Exceptional Generalized Geometry (EGG) as an organizing principle. In particular, we establish the precise map between fluxes, gaugings of maximal 4d supergravity and EGG, identifying the complete set of gaugings that admit an uplift to 10d heterotic or type IIB supegravity backgrounds. Our results reveal a rich structure, involving new deformations of 10d supergravity backgrounds, such as the RR counterparts of the $\beta$-deformation. These new deformations are expected to provide the natural extension of the $\beta$-deformation to full-fledged F-theory backgrounds. Our analysis also provides some clues on the 10d origin of some of the particularly less understood gaugings of 4d supergravity. Finally, we derive the explicit expression for the effective superpotential in arbitrary N = 1 heterotic or type IIB orientifold compactifications, for all the allowed fluxes.

Abstract:We explore the postulates of string no-scale supergravity in the context of free-fermionic string models. The requirements of vanishing vacuum energy, flat directions of the scalar potential, and stable no-scale mechanism impose strong restrictions on possible string no-scale models, which must possess only two or three moduli, and a constrained massless spectrum. The soft-supersymmetry-breaking parameters involving all twisted and untwisted fields are given explicitly. This class of models contain no free parameters, \ie, in principle all supersymmetric particle masses and interactions are completely determined. A computerized search for free-fermionic models with the desired properties yields a candidate $SU(5)\times U(1)$ model containing extra (\r{10},\rb{10}) matter representations that allow gauge coupling unification at the string scale. Our candidate model possesses a bening non-universal assignment of supersymmetry breaking scalar masses, which may have interesting low-energy experimental consequences.

On scale-separated supersymmetric AdS$_2$ flux vacua

Abstract:We argue that scale-separated AdS$_2$ vacua with at least two preserved supercharges cannot arise from flux compactifications in a regime of computational control. We deduce this by showing that the AdS$_2$ scale is parametrically of the same order as the tension of a fundamental BPS domain wall, which provides an upper bound on the UV cutoff. Since the latter does not need to be associated to any geometric scale, the argument excludes scale separation in a broader sense than what commonly considered. Our claim is exemplified by a bottom-up 2D supergravity analysis as well as top-down models from Type II flux compactifications.

New families of scale separated vacua

Abstract:Massive type IIA flux compactifications of the form AdS$_4 \times X_6$, where $X_6$ admits a Calabi-Yau metric and O6-planes wrapping three-cycles, display families of vacua with parametric scale separation between the compactification scale and the AdS$_4$ radius, generated by an overall rescaling of internal four-form fluxes. For toroidal orbifolds one can perform two T-dualities and map this background to an orientifold of massless type IIA compactified on an SU(3)-structure manifold with fluxes. Via a 4d EFT analysis, we generalise this last construction and embed it into new branches of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua with similar features. We apply our results to propose new infinite families of vacua based on elliptic fibrations with metric fluxes. Parametric scale separation is achieved by an asymmetric flux rescaling which, however, in general is not a simple symmetry of the 4d equations of motion. At this level of approximation the vacua are stable but, unlike in the Calabi-Yau case, they display a non-universal mass spectrum of light fields.

Abstract:We examine whether any type II asymmetric orbifolds have the same massless spectrum as the dimensional reduction of D=5 simple supergravity, which, besides the eleven-dimensional supergravity, is the only known supergravity above four dimensions with no moduli. We attempt to construct such models by further twisting the orbifolds which yield D=4, N=4 pure supergravity to find that, unfortunately, none of the models have that spectrum. We provide supergravity arguments explaining why this is so. As a by-product, we list all possible momentum-winding lattices that give D=4, N=4 pure supergravity.

Abstract:We present a theory of N=2 chiral supergravity in (10+2)-dimensions. This formulation is similar to N=1 supergravity presented recently using null-vectors in 12D. In order to see the consistency of this theory, we perform a simple dimensional reduction to ten-dimensions, reproducing the type IIB chiral supergravity. We also show that our supergravity can be consistent background for super (2+2)-brane theory, satisfying fermionic invariance of the total action. Such supergravity theory without manifest Lorentz invariance had been predicted by the recent F-theory in twelve-dimensions.

Decoupling and de Sitter Vacua in Approximate No-Scale Supergravities

Abstract:We study ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with $N>1$ chiral superfields in which one of the fields has a Kähler potential of exact no-scale type. Such systems admit de Sitter (dS) solutions in which supersymmetry is predominantly broken by the no-scale field, with only a small contribution to the breaking coming from the other fields. Metastable dS vacua of this type were recently shown to be achievable by the finetuning of an $N\times N$ sub-matrix of the Hessian matrix at the critical point. We show that perturbatively small deformations of the no-scale Minkowski vacuum into dS are only possible when the spectrum of the no-scale vacuum, besides the no-scale field, contain an additional massless mode. The no-scale structure allows for a decoupling of $N-2$ fields, and metastability can be achieved by the tuning of ${\cal O}(N^0)$ parameters. We illustrate this scenario in several examples, and derive a geometric condition for its realisation in type IIB string theory. Supergravities in which the complex structure moduli space is a symmetric space, such as the string theory inspired STU-models, are non-generic and realise a modified version of the scenario. For the STU-model with a single non-perturbative correction we present an explicit analytic family of dS solutions that includes examples with quantised fluxes satisfying the O3-plane tadpole condition.

New non-supersymmetric flux vacua in string theory

Abstract:In this note we construct large ensembles of supersymmetry breaking solutions arising in the context of flux compactifications of type IIB string theory. This class of solutions was previously proposed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0402135" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0402135">arXiv:hep-th/0402135</a> for which we provide the first explicit examples in Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications with discrete fluxes below their respective tadpole constraint. As a proof of concept, we study the degree 18 hypersurface in weighted projective space $\mathbb{CP}_{1,1,1,6,9}$. Furthermore, we look at 10 additional orientifolds with $h^{1,2}=2,3$. We find several flux vacua with hierarchical suppression of the vacuum energy with respect to the gravitino mass. These solutions provide a crucial stepping stone for the construction of explicit de Sitter vacua in string theory. Lastly, we also report the difference in the distribution of $W_0$ between supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric minima.

Abstract:We present a pedagogical overview of flux compactifications in string theory, from the basic ideas to the most recent developments. We concentrate on closed string fluxes in type II theories. We start by reviewing the supersymmetric flux configurations with maximally symmetric four-dimensional spaces. We then discuss the no-go theorems (and their evasion) for compactifications with fluxes. We analyze the resulting four-dimensional effective theories, as well as some of its perturbative and non-perturbative corrections, focusing on moduli stabilization. Finally, we briefly review statistical studies of flux backgrounds.

Flux vacua in type IIB compactifications on orbifolds: their finiteness and minimal string coupling

Abstract:We perform a detailed study of (supersymmetric) moduli stabilisation in type IIB toroidal orientifolds with fluxes. We provide strong evidence towards exhaustion of the finite number of inequivalent vacua for a given total 3-form flux charge $N_{\rm flux}$. We also find that the minimal value of the string coupling $g_s$ is given in terms of $N_{\rm flux}$ and present strong evidence for the asymptotic relation $g_{s,\,\rm{min}}\sim c/N_{\rm flux}^\alpha$, with $\alpha=1,2$, valid for not too small $N_{\rm flux}$, where $c$ is an order 1 coefficient and $\alpha$ depends on the orbifold. Imposing tadpole cancellation, $N_{\rm flux}$ is bounded from the number of orientifold O3-planes. Combined with the flux quantisation, this forbids orientifold vacua without anti-brane charge. On the other hand, the presence of negative D3-brane charge induced by magnetised D7-branes breaks supersymmetry and relaxes the bound, allowing significantly smaller values for $g_s$.

Abstract:The four-dimensional N=1 supergravity theories arising in compactifications of type IIA and type IIB on generalized orientifold backgrounds with background fluxes are discussed. The Kahler potentials are derived for reductions on SU(3) structure orientifolds and shown to consist of the logarithm of the two Hitchin functionals. These are functions of even and odd forms parameterizing the geometry of the internal manifold, the B-field and the dilaton. The superpotentials induced by background fluxes and the non-Calabi-Yau geometry are determined by a reduction of the type IIA and type IIB fermionic actions on SU(3) and generalized SU(3) x SU(3) manifolds. Mirror spaces of Calabi-Yau orientifolds with electric and part of the magnetic NS-NS fluxes are conjectured to be certain SU(3) x SU(3) structure manifolds. Evidence for this identification is provided by comparing the generalized type IIA and type IIB superpotentials.

Adding fluxes to consistent truncations: IIB supergravity on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$

Abstract:We use $E_{8(8)}$ Exceptional Field Theory to construct the consistent truncation of IIB supergravity on $S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$ to maximal 3-dimensional ${\cal N}=16$ gauged supergravity containing the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ AdS$_3$ vacuum. We explain how to achieve this by adding a 7-form flux to the $S^1$ reduction of the dyonic $E_{7(7)}$ truncation on $S^3 \times S^3$ previously constructed in the literature. Our truncation Ansatz includes, in addition to the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ vacuum, a host of moduli breaking some or all of the supersymmetries. We explicitly construct the uplift of a subset of these to construct new supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric AdS$_3$ vacua of IIB string theory, which include a range of perturbatively stable non-supersymmetric 10-d vacua. Moreover, we show how the supersymmetric direction of the moduli space of AdS$_3$ vacua of six-dimensional gauged supergravity studied in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.01167" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.01167">arXiv:2111.01167</a> is compactified upon lifting to 10 dimensions, and find evidence of T-duality playing a role in global aspects of the moduli space. Along the way, we also derive the form of 3-dimensional ${\cal N}=16$ gauged supergravity in terms of the embedding tensor and rule out a 10-/11-dimensional origin of some 3-dimensional gauged supergravities.

N=1 SCFTs from F-theory on Orbifolds

Abstract:We study four-dimensional superconformal field theories living on the worldvolume of $D3$ branes probing minimally-supersymmetric F-theory backgrounds, focusing on the case of orbi-orientifold setups with and without 7-branes. We observe that these theories are closely related to compactifications of six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories on a torus with flux, where the flux quanta is mapped in Type IIB to the defining data of the orbifold group. We analyze the cases of class $\mathcal{S}_k$ theories as well as of compactifications of the E-string and of orbi-instanton theories. We also classify $\mathcal{S}$-fold configurations in F-theory preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions and their mass deformations.
