Abstract:We present a Jordan algebraic formulation of the non-commutative Landau problem coupled to a harmonic potential. To achieve this, an alternative formulation of the Hilbert space version of quantum mechanics is presented. Using this construction, the Hilbert space corresponding to the non-commutative Landau problem is obtained. Non-commutative parameters are then described in terms of an associator in the Jordan algebraic setting. Pure states and density matrices arising from this problem are characterized. This in turn leads us to the Jordan-Schrödinger time-evolution equation for the state vectors for this specific problem.

Algebraic Approach to Relativistic Landau Levels in the Symmetric Gauge

Abstract:We use an algebraic approach to the calculation of Landau levels for a uniform magnetic field in the symmetric gauge with a vector potential A = (1/2) (B x r), where B is assumed to be constant. The magnetron quantum number constitutes the degeneracy index. An overall complex phase of the wave function, given in terms of Laguerre polynomials, is a consequence of the algebraic structure. The relativistic generalization of the treatment leads to fully relativistic bispinor Landau levels in the symmetric gauge, in a representation which writes the relativistic states in terms of their nonrelativistic limit, and an algebraically accessible lower bispinor component. Negative-energy states and the massless limit are discussed. The relativistic states can be used for a number of applications, including the calculation of higher-order quantum electrodynamic binding corrections to the energies of quantum cyclotron levels.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is threefold: First of all the topological aspects of the Landau Hamiltonian are reviewed in the light of (and with the jargon of) the theory of topological insulators. In particular it is shown that the Landau Hamiltonian has a generalized even time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Secondly, a new tool for the computation of the topological numbers associated with each Landau level is introduced by combining the Dixmier trace and the (resolvent of the) harmonic oscillator. Finally, these results are extended to models with non-Abelian magnetic fields. Two models are investigated in details: the Jaynes-Cummings model and the "Quaternionic" model.

Abstract:We revisit the conjectural method called Schubert analysis for generating the alphabet of symbol letters for Feynman integrals, which was based on geometries of intersecting lines associated with corresponding cut diagrams. We explain the effectiveness of this somewhat mysterious method by relating such geometries to the corresponding Landau singularities, which also amounts to ``uplifting" Landau singularities of a Feynman integral to its symbol letters. We illustrate this {\it Landau-based Schubert analysis} using various multi-loop Feynman integrals in four dimensions and present an automated {\ttfamily Mathematica} notebook for it. We then apply the method to a simplified problem of studying alphabets of physical quantities such as scattering amplitudes and form factors in planar ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills. By focusing on a small set of Landau diagrams (as opposed to all relevant Feynman integrals), we show how this method nicely produces the two-loop alphabet of $n$-point MHV amplitudes and that of the $n=4$ MHV form factors. A byproduct of our analysis is an explicit representation of any symbol alphabet obtained this way as the union of various type-$A$ cluster algebras.

Abstract:The Landau problem and harmonic oscillator in the plane share a Hilbert space that carries the structure of Dirac’s remarkable so(2,3) representation. We show that the orthosymplectic algebra osp(1|4) is the spectrum generating algebra for the Landau problem and, hence, for the 2D isotropic harmonic oscillator. The 2D harmonic oscillator is in duality with the 2D quantum Coulomb–Kepler systems, with the osp(1|4) symmetry broken down to the conformal symmetry so(2,3). The even so(2,3) submodule (coined Rac) generated from the ground state of zero angular momentum is identified with the Hilbert space of a 2D hydrogen atom. An odd element of the superalgebra osp(1|4) creates a pseudo-vacuum with intrinsic angular momentum 1/2 from the vacuum. The odd so(2,3)-submodule (coined Di) built upon the pseudo-vacuum is the Hilbert space of a magnetized 2D hydrogen atom: a quantum system of a dyon and an electron. Thus, the Hilbert space of the Landau problem is a direct sum of two massless unitary so(2,3) representations, namely, the Di and Rac singletons introduced by Flato and Fronsdal.

Abstract:We construct algebra with noncommutativity of coordinates and noncommutativity of momenta which is rotationally invariant and equivalent to noncommutative algebra of canonical type. Influence of noncommutativity on the energy levels of hydrogen atom is studied in rotationally invariant noncommutative phase space. We find corrections to the levels up to the second order in the parameters of noncommutativity and estimate the upper bounds of these parameters.

Scale Invariance in the Lowest Landau Level

Abstract:We show that the discrete set of pair amplitudes $A_m$ introduced by Haldane are an angular-momentum resolved generalization of the Tan two-body contact, which parametrizes universal short-range correlations in atomic quantum gases. The pair amplitudes provide a complete description of translation-invariant and rotation-invariant states in the lowest Landau level (LLL), both compressible and incompressible. To leading nontrivial order beyond the non-interacting high-temperature limit, they are determined analytically in terms of the Haldane pseudopotential parameters $V_m$, which provides a qualitative description of the crossover towards incompressible ground states for different filling factors. Moreover, we show that for contact interactions $\sim g_2 \delta^{(2)}({\bf x})$, which are scale invariant at the classical level, the non-commutativity of the guiding center coordinates gives rise to a quantum anomaly in the commutator $i [\hat{H}_{\rm LLL}, \hat{D}_R] = (2 + \ell \partial_\ell) \hat{H}_{\rm LLL}$ with the dilatation operator $\hat{D}_R$ in the LLL, which replaces the trace anomaly in the absence of a magnetic field. The interaction-induced breaking of scale invariance gives rise to a finite frequency shift of the breathing mode in a harmonic trap, which describes transitions between different Landau levels, the strength of which is estimated in terms of the relevant dimensionless coupling constant $\tilde{g}_2$.

Abstract:Even though its classical equations of motion are then left invariant, when an action is redefined by an additive total derivative or divergence term (in time, in the case of a mechanical system) such a transformation induces nontrivial consequences for the system's canonical phase space formulation. This is even more true and then in more subtle ways for the canonically quantised dynamics, with in particular an induced transformation in the unitary configuration space representation of the Heisenberg algebra being used for the quantum system. When coupled to a background gauge field, such considerations become crucial for a proper understanding of the consequences for the system's quantum dynamics of gauge transformations of that classical external background gauge field, while under such transformations the system's degrees of freedom, abstract quantum states and quantum dynamics are certainly strictly invariant. After a detailed analysis of these different points in a general context, these are then illustrated specifically in the case of the quantum Landau problem with its classical external background magnetic vector potential for which the most general possible parametrised gauge choice is implemented herein. The latter discussion aims as well to clarify some perplexing statements in the literature regarding the status of gauge choices to be made for the magnetic vector potential for that quantum system. The role of the global space-time symmetries of the Landau problem and their gauge invariant Noether charges is then also emphasized.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a modified Toda lattice hierarchy by resorting to the Lenard operator pairs. The hyper-elliptic curve and Abel–Jacobi coordinates are then introduced to linearize the associated flow, from which some algebraic-geometric solutions of the modified Toda lattice are explicitly constructed in terms of Riemann theta functions by using Jacobi inversion technique.

Abstract:Starting with the quantum Liouville equation, we write the density operator as the product of elements respectively in the left and right ideals of an operator algebra and find that the Schrodinger picture may be expressed through two representation independent algebraic forms in terms of the density and phase operators. These forms are respectively the continuity equation, which involves the commutator of the Hamiltonian with the density operator, and an equation for the time development of the phase operator that involves the anti-commutator of the Hamiltonian with this density operator. We show that this latter equation plays two important roles: (i) it expresses the conservation of energy in a system where energy is well defined and (ii) it provides a simple way to evaluate the gauge changes that occur in the Aharonov-Bohm, the Aharonov-Casher, and Berry phase effects. Both these operator (i.e. purely algebraic) equations also allow us to re-examine the Bohm interpretation, showing that it is in fact possible to construct Bohm interpretations in representations other than the x-representation. We discuss the meaning of the Bohm interpretation in the light of these new results in terms of non-commutative structures and this enables us to clarify its relation to standard quantum mechanics.

The hidden Lorentz Covariance of Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:This paper introduces a systematic algorithm for deriving a new unitary representation of the Lorentz algebra ($so(1,3)$) and an irreducible unitary representation of the extended (anti) de-Sitter algebra ($so(2,4)$) on $\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mathcal{R}^{3},\frac{1}{r})$. This representation is equivalent to a representation on $\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mathcal{R}^{3})$, and the corresponding similarity transformation is identified. An explicit representation in terms of differential operators is given, and it is shown that the inner product is Lorentz invariant. Ensuring Lorentz covariance demands a modification of the Heisenberg algebra, recognized as a phase space algebra at the interface of gravitational and quantum realms (IGQR), which we consider subordinate to Lorentz covariance. It is also demonstrated that time evolution can be cast in a manifestly covariant form. Each mass sector of the Hilbert space carries a representation of the Lorentz algebra, and the (anti) de-Sitter algebra on each mass sector contracts to the Poincare algebra in the flat configuration and momentum space limits. Finally, we show that three-dimensional fuzzy space also carries a unitary representation of these algebras, algebraically equivalent to the $\mathcal{L}^{2}(\mathcal{R}^{3},\frac{1}{r})$ representation but not necessarily equivalent as representations. Several outstanding issues are identified for future exploration.

Abstract:The Heisenberg Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field F of characteristic p > 0 always admit a family of restricted Lie algebras. We use the ordinary 1- and 2-cohomology spaces with adjoint coefficients to compute the restricted 1- and 2-cohomology spaces of these restricted Heisenberg Lie algebras. We describe the infinitesimal restricted deformations of the restricted Lie algebras.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we found an extension of the N-dimensional Lorentz generators that partially restores the closed operator algebra in the presence of a Maxwell field, and is conserved under system evolution. Generalizing the construction found by Berard, Grandati, Lages and Mohrbach for the angular momentum operators in the O(3)-invariant nonrelativistic case, we showed that the construction can be maximally satisfied in a three dimensional subspace of the full Minkowski space; this subspace can be chosen to describe either the O(3)-invariant space sector, or an O(2,1)-invariant restriction of spacetime. When the O(3)-invariant subspace is selected, the field solution reduces to the Dirac monopole field found in the nonrelativistic case. For the O(2,1)-invariant subspace, the Maxwell field can be associated with a Coulomb-like potential on spacetime, similar to that used by Horwitz and Arshansky to obtain a covariant generalization of the hydrogen-like bound state. In this paper we elaborate on the generalization of the Dirac monopole to N-dimensions.

Abstract:This work deals with the Landau equation in a bounded domain with the Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary for any (possibly smoothly position dependent) accommodation coefficient and for the full range of interaction potentials, including the Coulomb case. We establish the global existence and a constructive asymptotic decay of solutions in a close-to-equilibrium regime. This is the first existence result for a Maxwell reflection condition on the boundary and that generalizes the similar results established for the Landau equation for other geometries in \cite{GuoLandau1,GS1,GS2,MR3625186,MR4076068}. We also answer to Villani's program \cite{MR2116276,MR2407976} about constructive accurate rate of convergence to the equilibrium {(quantitative H-Theorem)} for solutions to collisional kinetic equations satisfying a priori uniform bounds. The proofs rely on the study of a suitably linear problem for which we prove that the associated operator is hypocoercive, the associated semigroup is ultracontractive, and finally that it is asymptotically stable in many weighted $L^\infty$ spaces.

Abstract:The eigen-states of the Landau Hamiltonian in the symmetric gauge are characterized by two integers $n$ and $m$. Here, $n$ denotes the familiar Landau quantum number, while $m$ represents the eigen-value of the canonical orbital angular momentum (OAM) operator $\hat{L}^{can}_z$. On the other hand, the eigen-states in the 1st Landau gauge are characterized by two integers $n$ and $k_x$, here $n$ is the Landau quantum number, while $k_x$ is the eigen-value of the canonical momentum operator $\hat{p}^{can}_x$. Since the canonical momentum and the canonical OAM are both gauge-variant quantities, their eigenvalues $k_x$ and $m$ are standardly believed not to correspond to observables. However, this wide-spread view was suspected in a recent paper based on the logical development of the gauge-potential-independent formulation of the Landau problem, which predicts the existence of two conserved momenta $\hat{p}^{cons}_x$ and $\hat{p}^{cons}_y$ and one conserved OAM $\hat{L}^{cons}_z$. They are regarded as Noether charges of the Landau Hamiltonian, the conservation of which is guaranteed {\it independently} of the choice of the {\it auge potential}. In particular, on the basis of novel covariant gauge transformation properties of these conserved operators, the eigen-values of which are characterized by the quantum numbers $k_x$, $k_y$, and $m$, it was claimed that these quantum numbers correspond to observables at least in principle. The purpose of the present paper is to show that this claim is not justified, regardless of the differences in the two theoretical formulations of the Landau problem, i.e. the traditional formulation and the gauge-potential-independent formulation.

Abstract:The time evolution is studied for the Landau problem with a general time dependent electric field ${\bf E}(t)$ in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. A general and explicit factorization of the time evolution operator is derived with each factor having a clear physical interpretation. The factorization consists of a geometric operator (path-ordered magnetic translation), a dynamical operator generated by the usual time-independent Landau Hamiltonian, and a nonadiabatic operator that determines the transition probabilities among the Landau levels. Since the path-ordered magnetic translation and the nonadiabatic operators are, up to completely determined numerical phase factors, just ordinary exponentials whose exponents are explicitly expressible in terms of the canonical variables, all of the factors in the factorization are explicitly constructed. The numerical phase factors are quantum mechanical in nature and could be of significance in interference experiments. The factorization is unique from the point of view of the quantum adiabatic theorem and provides a demonstration of how the quantum adiabatic theorem (incorporating the Berry phase phenomenon) is realized when infinitely degenerate energy levels are involved. Since the factorization separates the effect caused by the electric field into a geometric factor and a nonadiabatic factor, it makes possible to calculate the nonadiabatic transition probabilities near the adiabatic limit. A formula for matrix elements that determines the mixing of the Landau levels for a general, non-adiabatic evolution is also provided by the factorization.
A note on GMP algebra, dipole symmetry, and Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem in the lowest Landau level

Abstract:After projection to the lowest Landau level translational invariance and particle conservation combine into dipole symmetry. We show that the new symmetry forbids spontaneous $U(1)$ symmetry breaking at zero temperature. In the case of the spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field, where the translational invariance is absent, we show that the dipole symmetry disappears and the constraint on the symmetry breaking is lifted. We pay special attention to the fate of the Girvin-Macdonald-Platzman algebra in the inhomogeneous magnetic field and show that a natural generalization of it is still present even though the dipole symmetry is not.

Abstract:In the paper it will be shown that Reichenbach's Weak Common Cause Principle is not valid in algebraic quantum field theory with locally finite degrees of freedom in general. Namely, for any pair of projections A and B supported in spacelike separated double cones O(a) and O(b), respectively, a correlating state can be given for which there is no nontrivial common cause (system) located in the union of the backward light cones of O(a) and O(b) and commuting with the both A and B. Since noncommuting common cause solutions are presented in these states the abandonment of commutativity can modulate this result: noncommutative Common Cause Principles might survive in these models.

Abstract:This document presents an elementary approach using $\varepsilon$-Poincaré inequality to prove generation of $L^{p}$-bounds, $p\in(1,\infty)$, for the homogeneous Landau equation with moderate soft potentials $\gamma\in[-2,0)$. The critical case $\gamma=-2$ uses an interpolation approach in the realm of Lorentz spaces and entropy. Alternatively, a direct approach using the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev (HLS) inequality and entropy is also presented. On this basis, the generation of pointwise bounds $p=\infty$ is deduced from a De Giorgi argument.
