Abstract:The electrically insulating and volumetric deformation of sulfur and the shuttle effect of the intermediate lithium polysulfide (LiPSs) have severely hindered the development of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, a synergistic strategy of hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (PNCM) derived from low-cost biomass with surface-coated AlF3 nanolayer as a multifunctional sulfur host (denoted as PNCM@S@AlF3) was developed. The PNCM not only possesses an abundant pore structure, large surface area, and high electrical conductivity but also features an intrinsic N-doped and fluorinated framework, which effectively enhances the physical adsorption and chemical anchoring to LiPSs. In addition, the AlF3 nanolayer protects the open surface of the porous carbon to isolate sulfur species from the electrolyte to reduce irreversible losses while accelerating the redox kinetics of LiPSs through strong polar adsorption and bonding. Hence, the PNCM@S@AlF3 cathode exhibits an initial capacity as high as 1176.2 mAh/g at 0.2C, and the cycling stability and rate capability are superior to that of PNCM@S without AlF3 coating. Impressively, the PNCM@S@AlF3 cathode delivers stable long-term cycling performance at a high rate of 2C, with 95.6% capacity retention after 500 cycles. This work presents a facile, sustainable, and efficient synergistic strategy for developing advanced LSBs.

Abstract:The development of Li-S batteries is greatly hindered by the polysulfide shuttling and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, leading to low utilization of active materials and rapid capacity decay. Herein, a freestanding multifunctional interlayer, prepared by layer-by-layer assembling of the single-atom cobalt-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NC@SA-Co) and dual network of carbon nanotube-cellulose nanofiber (CNT-CNF) hybrid, is proposed to effectively enhance the polysulfide immobilization and sulfur redox kinetics. The conductive CNT network acts as the physical barrier to confine the polysulfide diffusion and to facilitate the reuse of polysulfides. The oxygen-group-terminated CNF network allows the hopping of Li+ ion and suppresses the polysulfide crossover due to the strong electrostatic repulsion. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the 2D NC@SA-Co with numerous well-defined single sites of Co-N-4 can effectively serve as an electrocatalyst to boost the reversible reaction of polysulfides. As a result, the assembled Li-S batteries with the multifunctional interlayer deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 1160 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and an ultralow capacity decay of 0.058% per cycle over 700 cycles. Even with a high sulfur loading of 7.2 mg cm(-2), a high areal capacity of 8.3 mAh cm(-2) can be achieved.
Selective Adsorption and Electrocatalysis of Polysulfides Through Hexatomic Nickel Clusters Embedded in N-Doped Graphene Toward High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Abstract:The shuttle effect hinders the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries due to the poor affinity between a substrate and Li polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish transition of soluble LiPSs to insoluble Li 2 S or elemental S. Here, we report that Ni hexatomic clusters embedded in a nitrogen-doped three-dimensional (3D) graphene framework (Ni-N/G) possess stronger interaction with soluble polysulfides than that with insoluble polysulfides. The synthetic electrocatalyst deployed in the sulfur cathode plays a multifunctional role: (i) selectively adsorbing the polysulfides dissolved in the electrolyte, (ii) expediting the sluggish liquid-solid phase transformations at the active sites as electrocatalysts, and (iii) accelerating the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction of multielectron sulfur, thereby inhibiting the dissolution of LiPSs. The constructed S@Ni-N/G cathode delivers an areal capacity of 9.43 mAh cm -2 at 0.1 C at S loading of 6.8 mg cm -2 , and it exhibits a gravimetric capacity of 1104 mAh g -1 with a capacity fading rate of 0.045% per cycle over 50 cycles at 0.2 C at S loading of 2.0 mg cm -2 . This work opens a rational approach to achieve the selective adsorption and expediting of polysulfide transition for the performance enhancement of Li-S batteries.
Multifunctional Catalytic Hierarchical Interfaces of Ni12 P5 -Ni2 P Porous Nanosheets Enabled Both Sulfides Reaction Promotion and Li-Dendrite Suppression for High-Performance Li-S Full Batteries

Abstract:The development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is very promising and yet faces the issues of hindered polysulfides conversion and Li dendrite growth. Different from using different materials strategies to overcome these two types of problems, here multifunctional catalytic hierarchical interfaces of Ni12 P5 -Ni2 P porous nanosheets formed by Ni2 P partially in situ converted from Ni12 P5 are proposed. The unique electronic structure in the interface endows Ni12 P5 -Ni2 P effective electrocatalysis effect toward both sulfides' reduction and oxidation through reducing Gibbs free energies, indicating a bidirectional conversion acceleration. Importantly, Ni12 P5 -Ni2 P porous nanosheets with hierarchical interfaces also reduced the Li nucleation energy barrier, and a dendrite-free Li deposition is realized during the overall Li deposition and stripping steps. To this end, Ni12 P5 -Ni2 P decorated carbon nanotube/S cathode showing a high capacity of over 1500 mAh g-1 , and a high rate capability of 8 C. Moreover, the coin full cell delivered a high capacity of 1345 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and the pouch full cell delivered a high capacity of 1114 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C with high electrochemical stability during 180° bending. This work inspires the exploration of hierarchical structures of 2D materials with catalytically active interfaces to improve the electrochemistry of Li-S full battery.
Elaborately converting hierarchical NiCo–LDH to rod–like LDH–decorated MOF as interlayer for high–performance lithium–sulfur battery

Abstract:Inserting an interlayer between sulfur cathode and separator is an effective strategy to suppress polysulfide shuttling for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery. Herein, we report a convenient solvothermal conversion of hierarchical NiCo–layered double hydroxide (NiCo–LDH) into the corresponding LDH–decorated metal–organic framework (NiCo–MOF/LDH) nanorods by tuning the ligand concentration. The Li–S batteries with the interlayer of NiCo–MOF/LDH nanorods exhibit a high specific capacity of 950 mAh g –1 after 200 cycles at 1 C with an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.033% per cycle as well as excellent rate capability, much superior to the counterparts with pure NiCo–MOF or NiCo–LDH interlayers or blank case. The excellent Li–S battery performance results from the strong chemical adsorption of NiCo–LDH to polysulfides and the superior electrocatalysis of NiCo–MOF to sulfur conversion chemistry, as confirmed by the combined experimental and theoretical simulations, which synergistically suppress the shuttle and polarization effects to improve the rate capability and cycling stability of Li–S batteries. This study provides an elaborate in situ conversion approach for hybridizing LDH and MOF with respective strong adsorption and electrocatalysis function to polysulfides, which leads to the advanced interlayer material of NiCo–MOF/LDH for high–performance Li–S battery with potential applications.

Abstract:Rational construction of sulfur electrodes is essential in pursuit of practically viable lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, bimetallic NiCo‐layered double hydroxide (NiCo‐LDH) with a unique hierarchical micro‐nano architecture is developed as an advanced sulfur reservoir for Li–S batteries. Compared with the monometallic Co‐layered double hydroxide (Co‐LDH) counterpart, the bimetallic configuration realizes much enriched, miniaturized, and vertically aligned LDH nanosheets assembled in hollow polyhedral nanoarchitecture, which geometrically benefits the interface exposure for host–guest interactions. Beyond that, the introduction of secondary metal intensifies the chemical interactions between layered double hydroxide (LDH) and sulfur species, which implements strong sulfur immobilization and catalyzation for rapid and durable sulfur electrochemistry. Furthermore, the favorable NiCo‐LDH is architecturally upgraded into closely packed micro‐nano clusters with facilitated long‐range electron/ion conduction and robust structural integrity. Due to these attributes, the corresponding Li–S cells realize excellent cyclability over 800 cycles with a minimum capacity fading of 0.04% per cycle and good rate capability up to 2 C. Moreover, highly reversible areal capacity of 4.3 mAh cm−2 can be achieved under a raised sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm−2. This work provides not only an effective architectural design but also a deepened understanding on bimetallic LDH sulfur reservoir for high‐performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been considered as a promising candidate for next-generation electrochemical energy-storage technologies because of their overwhelming advantages in energy density. Suppression of the polysulfide dissolution while maintaining a high sulfur utilization is the main challenge for Li-S batteries. Here, we have designed and synthesized double-shelled nanocages with two shells of cobalt hydroxide and layered double hydroxides (CH@LDH) as a conceptually new sulfur host for Li-S batteries. Specifically, the hollow CH@LDH polyhedra with complex shell structures not only maximize the advantages of hollow nanostructures for encapsulating a high content of sulfur (75 wt %), but also provide sufficient self-functionalized surfaces for chemically bonding with polysulfides to suppress their outward dissolution. When evaluated as cathode material for Li-S batteries, the CH@LDH/S composite shows a significantly improved electrochemical performance.
Yolk-Shell Nano ZnO@Co-Doped NiO with Efficient Polarization Adsorption and Catalysis Performance for Superior Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Abstract:Achieving strong adsorption and catalytic ability toward polar lithium polysulfide species (LiPSs) of the sulfur host in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is essential for their electrochemical cyclic stability. Herein, a strategy of "self-termination of ion exchange" is put forward to synthesize the novel yolk-shell sulfur host composed of ZnO nanoparticles confined in Co-doped NiO (CDN) polyhedron (ZCCDN). After sulfur infiltration, the obtained S/ZCCDN cathode achieves excellent performance of 738.56 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.5 C with a very low capacity decay rate of only 0.048% per cycle. Even at 1 C, 501.05 mAh g-1 could be retained after 500 cycles, suggesting a capacity decay ratio of only 0.076% per cycle. The good cycle performance is attributed to the improved LiPSs' conversion kinetics, which originates from ZCCDN's sturdy chemical affinity and strong catalytic ability to polar LiPSs. For the first time, by electron holography, the local interfacial polarization electric field is clarified to be existed in the material which is conducive to the capture of LiPSs and the migration of electrons and Li+ from the mesopores. This work provides a rational way for the use of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and development of cathode materials for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Li-S batteries have been recognized as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems, however, their practically commercialized applications are severely hindered by the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSS), retarded conversion kinetics and the growth of lithium dendrites. Herein, a vertically growing layered NiFe-LDH derived Ni4N-Fe2N heterostructure cross-like nanoarrays on a carbon cloth (CC) (denoted as CC@Ni4N-Fe2N@C) was constructed by a pot of hydrothermal method followed by the subsequent carbon coating and nitridation processes to synchronously tackle the above challenges related to Li-S batteries. This heterostructure presents good sulfiphilic and lithiophilic properties and can be directly used as the host materials both for S and Li. As-expected, this heterostructure exhibits the significantly improved discharge specific capacity, rate performance and cycle stability compared with the single-metal nitrides (CC@Ni4N@C and CC@Fe2N@C). The study of the symmetric cells certifies that this heterostructure can expose the abundant lithiophilic active sites to achieve the homogeneous Li deposition and effectively suppress the growth of Li dendrites.

Abstract:There are shuttle effects and slow kinetic transformation processes of polysulfides that must be overcome to attain excellent lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Recently, developing catalysts to facilitate lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) conversion has attracted a large amount of attention. In this paper, a novel layered double hydroxides-derived (LDHs-derived) Co-Ni 3 N heterostructure anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is developed. The Co-Ni 3 N heterostructure with high catalytic activity and strong adsorption is capable of adsorbing long-chain polysulfides and significantly promotes LiPSs redox kinetics. Moreover, the Co-Ni 3 N-CNFs (450 °C/2 h) interlayer with hemp rope-like network structure accelerates the Li 2 S nucleation and provides high-conductivity channels. LSBs with the Co-Ni 3 N-CNFs (450 °C/2 h) interlayer exhibit remarkable initial discharge specific capacity (1359.9 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C), exceptional rate performance (775.2 mAh g −1 at 2 C), impressive cycling stability (with a capacity decay rate of 0.042 % over 1000 cycles at 2 C), and high Coulombic efficiency (CE exceeding 99.5 %).

Abstract:The practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is severely impeded by the sluggish redox kinetics and polysulfides shuttling. Herein, hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers (HPCNF) embedded with ultrafine Nb2O5 nanocrystals (denoted as Nb2O5-HPCNF) are designed and served as a duplex-functional separator for polysulfide trapping and kinetic enhanced Li-S batteries. The hierarchical porous structure serves as a reservoir for polysulfide trapping, and HPCNF network provides channels for fast electron/ion transport. More importantly, the built-in Nb2O5 nanocrystals enhance the chemical affinity of polysulfides, and simultaneously promote the liquid-solid conversions of polysulfides. As a result, the Li-S batteries with Nb2O5-HPCNF separator delivered a high initial capacity of 1393 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and a high capacity of 741 mAh g-1 even at 4.0 C. Moreover, the modified cell can remain 574 mAh g-1 after 600 cycles at 1.0 C, corresponding to an ultralow decay rate of 0.066% per cycle. This work provides a rational design for achieving high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is a promising cathode material for Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries, but poor conductivity and electrochemical reactivity seriously hinders its applications. Herein, Ti3C2 nanosheet (TNS) supported core-shell nano-Li2S@Li3PS4 composite (NLi2S@LPS) is comprehensively designed to tackle these challenges. It displays fast Li+/e− transport kinetics, low energy barrier and high catalytic activity for the electrochemical redox reactions, which are derived from the synergistic effect of nano-sized Li2S, Li3PS4 coating and catalytic MXene (Ti3C2) components. The NLi2S@LPS/TNS composite electrode exhibits high utilization ratio of the active materials with low polarization and robust rate capability for charge/discharge, resulting in improved cycling stability for Li–S batteries. The Li–S batteries with NLi2S@LPS/TNS electrode have a capacity retention rate of 77% after 300 cycles of charge and discharge at 0.5C rate, corresponding to an average decay rate of 0.08% per cycle.

Abstract:The performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries is largely hindered by the shuttle effect caused by the dissolution of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish reaction kinetics of LiPSs. Here, it is demonstrated that the nickel–cobalt double hydroxide (NiCo‐DH) shells that encapsulate sulfur nanoparticles can play multiple roles in suppressing the shuttle effect and accelerating the redox kinetics of LiPSs by combining with graphene and carbon nanotubes to construct the conductive networks. The NiCo‐DH shell that intimately contacts with sulfur physically confines the loss of sulfur and promotes the charge transfer and ion diffusion. More importantly, it can react with LiPSs to produce the surface‐bound intermediates, which are able to anchor the soluble LiPSs and accelerate the redox kinetics. Such composite electrodes can load high contents of sulfur (>85 wt%) and the resulting Li–S battery exhibits a superior capacity (1348.1 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C), ultrahigh rate performance (697.7 mAh g−1 at 5 C), and ultralong cycle life (1500 cycles) with a decay rate of 0.015% per cycle.

Abstract:The development of lithium‐sulfur batteries was hindered due to the shuttling of lithium polysulfides in electrolytes and sluggish electrochemical kinetics of polysulfides transformation. Herein, multi heteroatoms (nitrogen and phosphorus) co-doped carbon nanofibers (NP-CF) is elaborately designed, which acted as the current collector and binder free membrane electrode containing Li 2 S 6 catholyte for lithium/polysulfides batteries. The conductivity of mesoporous NP-CF provide fast electronic transport and polarity of substrate possess a strong affinity to sulfur species, which could effectively anchor lithium polysulfides, boost their redox reaction catalytically-accelerate the reversible soluble/insolube phases conversion process, and greatly improve the utilization of active material. On the basis of density functional theory calculations on the bonding energies between NP-CF and lithium polysulfides (Li 2 S n , n = 4, 6), it is found the NP-CF possesses higher binding energies toward polysulfides than N-CF. As a result, the cell with NP-CF membrane electrode with 4.6 mg cm −2 sulfur loading exhibits stability cycling capacity, which delivers a high intial capacity of 1023.3 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and sustains a capacity of 709.2 mAh g −1 over 300 cycles. NP-CF/Li 2 S 6 electrode also performs well in cyclic performance with a sulfur loading of 8.4 mg cm −2 , delivers a high specific capacity of 7.8 mAh and still maintains 6.4 mAh after 100 cycles.

Herein, hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers (HPCNF) embedded with ultrafine Nb 2 O 5 nanocrystals (denoted as Nb 2 O 5 -HPCNF) are designed and served as a duplex-functional separator for polysulfide trapping and kinetic enhanced Li–S batteries. The hierarchical porous structure serves as a reservoir for polysulfide trapping, and HPCNF network provides channels for fast electron/ion transport. More importantly, the built-in Nb 2 O 5 nanocrystals enhance the chemical affinity of polysulfides, and simultaneously promote the liquid-solid conversions of polysulfides. As a result, the Li–S batteries with Nb 2 O 5 -HPCNF separator delivered a high initial capacity of 1393 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and a high capacity of 741 mAh g −1 even at 4.0 C. Moreover, the modified cell can remain 574 mAh g −1 after 600 cycles at 1.0 C, corresponding to an ultralow decay rate of 0.066% per cycle. This work provides a rational design for achieving high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:There are still many challenges including low conductivity of cathodes, shuttle effect of polysulfides, and significant volume change of sulfur during cycling to be solved before practical applications of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. In this work, (FeO) 2 FeBO 3 nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on interconnected nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NCNs) were synthesized, serving as sulfur carriers for Li–S batteries to solve such issues. NCNs have the cross-linked network structure, which possess good electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, and abundant micropores and mesopores, enabling the cathode to be well infiltrated and permeated by the electrolyte, ensuring the rapid electron/ion transfer, and alleviating the volume expansion during the electrochemical reaction. In addition, polar (FeO) 2 FeBO 3 can enhance the adsorption of polysulfides, effectively alleviating the polysulfide shuttle effect. Under a current density of 1.0 A·g −1 , the initial discharging and charging specific capacities of the (FeO) 2 FeBO 3 @NCNs-2/S electrode were obtained to be 1113.2 and 1098.3 mA·h·g −1 , respectively. After 1000 cycles, its capacity maintained at 436.8 mA·h·g −1 , displaying a decay rate of 0.08% per cycle. Therefore, combining NCNs with (FeO) 2 FeBO 3 NPs is conducive to the performance improvement of Li–S batteries.

Abstract:As an anode material of lithium-ion batteries, transition metal sulfides have high theoretical capacity, and the structure design is an effective strategy to gain better electrochemical performance. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have significant preponderances in the field of energy storage on account of their exchangeable anions and biggish specific surface area. Nevertheless, its defects such as poor conductivity, easy agglomeration of nanosheets and biggish volume change during the cycle result in poor cycling durability and rate performance, which gravely constrain its further application. In this study, hollow yolk-shell NiS 2 /FeS 2 @ LDH/FeO(OH) nanoflower microspheres are prepared successfully by solvothermal and hydrothermal methods. Firstly, introducing N-doped carbon layer can availably heighten the electro-conductivity of the materials and stop the metallic particles from falling off to boost the structural stability. The design of hollow yolk-shell and nanoflower structure can effectively inhibit cubical expansion. In addition, the unique layered structure of the nanosheets can provide more active sites, shorten the ion transport path, and enhance the lithium storage performance. As a result, the NiS 2 /FeS 2 @ LDH/FeO(OH) electrode has splendid cycling performance (709.9 mAh g -1 at 0.2 A g -1 after 200 cycles). These prominent electrochemical properties demonstrate convincingly that the NiS 2 /FeS 2 @ LDH/FeO(OH) is a viable anode material.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been acknowledged as outstanding substitutes for energy storage systems due to their superiority in energy density. To satisfy the commercial applications, it's necessary to establish the highly efficient and long-life Li-S batteries by synchronously restraining the shuttle effect and enhancing the polysulfides redox. Here, we prepared hierarchical mesoporous SnO2 nanosheets on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) namely C@SnO2 with the novel topological method. The obtained C@SnO2 materials not only show the strong chemisorption to trap polysulfides but also can more effectively decrease the electrochemical polarization to enhance the polysulfides redox. With the 3D conductive framework CNFs as the current collector, the hierarchical C@SnO2/S nanosheets material electrode delivered a specific capacity of 1228 mA h g(-1) at 0.2C and retained a stable cycling performance at 2C over 1000 cycles with the decay as low as approximate to 0.024% per cycle.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have shown great potential as next generation energy storage systems. However, the practical application is limited by the low electronic/ionic conductivity of sulfur, polysulfide dissolution and sluggish conversion. To solve the above-mentioned problems, a well-designed hollow carbon sphere framework with embedded Fe3O4 nanoparticles (S/Fe3O4-NC) is reported here as an efficient sulfur host for Li-S batteries. In consequence, S/Fe3O4-NC exhibited a high initial discharge capacity of 1264 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), a decent rate performance of 654 mA h g(-1) at 2 A g(-1) and a cycling stability of 61.1% capacity retention after 500 cycles, which are much better than those of a bowl-like hemisphere carbon structure without metal salt (S/NC). The decent performances are not only attributed to physical confinement that prevent polysulfide dissolving. Moreover, we prove that the embedded Fe3O4 nanoparticles can effectively function as polysulfide capture center due to the strong dipolar interactions, so that the polysulfide can largely be fixed and confined in the porous carbon layer. In addition, the high conductivity and catalytic activity of Fe3O4 can accelerate the redox conversion of polysulfide, thus facilitating the reaction kinetics. Benefiting from the structural and chemical optimization, a favorable performance was obtained with a capacity decay of each cycle being only 0.08% for over 500 cycles at 1 A g(-1), showing great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:The serious shuttle effect, sluggish reduction kinetics of polysulfides and the difficult oxidation reaction of Li2S have hindered LiS battery practical application. Herein, a 3D hierarchical structure composed of NiMoO4 nanosheets in situ anchored on NS doped carbon clothes (NiMoO4@NSCC) as the free-standing host is creatively designed and constructed for LiS battery. Dual transitional metal oxide (NiMoO4) increases the electrons density near the Fermi level due to the contribution of the incorporating molybdenum (Mo), leading to the smaller bandgap, and thus stronger metallic properties compared with NiO. Furthermore, as a bidirectional catalyst, NiMoO4 is proposed to facilitate reductions of polysulfides through lengthening the SS bond distance of Li2S4 and reducing the free energy of polysulfides conversion, meanwhile promote critical oxidation of insulative discharge product (Li2S) via lengthening LiS bond distance of Li2S and decreasing Li2S decomposition barrier. Therefore, after loading sulfur (2 mg cm−2), NiMoO4@NSCC/S as the self-supporting cathode for the LiS battery exhibits impressive long cycle stability. This study proposes a concept of a bidirectional catalyst with dual metal oxides, which would supply a novel vision to construct the high-performance LiS battery.
