Abstract:Recently evidence has emerged for enormous features in the gamma-ray sky observed by the Fermi-LAT instrument: bilateral `bubbles' of emission centered on the core of the Galaxy and extending to around 10 kpc above and below the Galactic plane. These structures are coincident with a non-thermal microwave `haze' found in WMAP data and an extended region of X-ray emission detected by ROSAT. The bubbles' gamma-ray emission is characterised by a hard and relatively uniform spectrum, relatively uniform intensity, and an overall luminosity ~4 x 10^37 erg/s, around one order of magnitude larger than their microwave luminosity while more than order of magnitude less than their X-ray luminosity. Here we show that the bubbles are naturally explained as due to a population of relic cosmic ray protons and heavier ions injected by processes associated with extremely long timescale (>~8 Gyr) and high areal density star-formation in the Galactic center.

Abstract: We report the detection of a $\gamma$-ray bubble spanning at least 100$\rm deg^2$ in ultra high energy (UHE) up to a few PeV in the direction of the star-forming region Cygnus X, implying the presence Super PeVatron(s) accelerating protons to at least 10 PeV. A log-parabola form with the photon index $\Gamma (E) = (2.71 \pm 0.02) + (0.11 \pm 0.02) \times \log_{10} (E/10 \ {\rm TeV})$ is found fitting the gamma-ray energy spectrum of the bubble well. UHE sources, `hot spots' correlated with very massive molecular clouds, and a quasi-spherical amorphous $\gamma$-ray emitter with a sharp central brightening are observed in the bubble. In the core of $\sim 0.5^{\circ}$, spatially associating with a region containing massive OB association (Cygnus OB2) and a microquasar (Cygnus X-3), as well as previously reported multi-TeV sources, an enhanced concentration of UHE $\gamma$-rays are observed with 2 photons at energies above 1 PeV. The general feature of the bubble, the morphology and the energy spectrum, are reasonably reproduced by the assumption of a particle accelerator in the core, continuously injecting protons into the ambient medium.
Superbubbles as Galactic PeVatrons: The Potential Role of Rapid Second-Order Fermi Acceleration

Abstract:Context: The origin of Galactic cosmic rays is still a mystery, in particular the sources and acceleration mechanism for cosmic rays with energies up to or beyond a PeV. Recently LHAASO has and H.E.S.S have shown that two gamma-ray sources associated with superbubbles created by young massive stellar clusters are likely PeVatrons. This has renewed the interest in the cosmic-ray acceleration processes in superbubbles. Aims: To study the possibility and conditions under which second-order Fermi acceleration can accelerate particles beyond PeV energies in superbubbles. Methods: An analytical equation is derived for the maximum energy a cosmic-ray particle can obtain as a function of acceleration duration and size. The maximum energy depends critically on the diffusion coefficient D and the Alfven velocity, V_A. The analytical solutions for the acceleration time scale shows that second-order Fermi acceleration can be just as efficient as diffusive shock acceleration, when comparable relevant velocities are used -- i.e. the Alfven velocity or shock velocity. Ultimately, the maximum energy is determined by the diffusive escape of the cosmic rays, which depends on the size and diffusion coefficient. This limits the maximum energy to a few PeV for superbubble radii of ~50 pc. The probable values for the diffusion coefficient and Alven speed are studied for two likely PeVatron regions, HESS J1646-458 associated with Westerlund 1, and the Cygnus Cocoon, associated Cyg OB2. Results: It is shown that within a typical stellar cluster time scale of 1-5 Myr cosmic rays can be accelerated to > 10^15 eV, provided that V_A >300 km/s, and the diffusion coefficient is D~10^26 cm^2s at 100 TeV. This suggests that second-order Fermi acceleration in superbubbles should be considered as a possible source of Galactic cosmic rays up to, or beyond a PeV.

Abstract:Fermi has discovered two giant gamma-ray-emitting bubbles that extend nearly 10kpc in diameter north and south of the galactic center (GC). The existence of the bubbles was first evidenced in X-rays detected by ROSAT and later WMAP detected an excess of radio signals at the location of the gamma-ray bubbles. We propose that periodic star capture processes by the galactic supermassive black hole, Sgr A$^*$, with a capture rate $3\times 10^{-5}$yr$^{-1}$ and energy release $\sim 3\times 10^{52}$erg per capture can produce very hot plasma $\sim 10$keV with a wind velocity $\sim 10^8$cm/s injected into the halo and heat up the halo gas to $\sim 1$keV, which produces thermal X-rays. The periodic injection of hot plasma can produce shocks in the halo and accelerate electrons to $\sim$TeV, which produce radio emission via synchrotron radiation, and gamma-rays via inverse Compton scattering with the relic and the galactic soft photons.

Abstract:Massive stars blow powerful winds and eventually explode as supernovae. By doing so, they inject energy and momentum in the circumstellar medium, which is pushed away from the star and piles up to form a dense and expanding shell of gas. The effect is larger when many massive stars are grouped together in bound clusters or associations. Large cavities form around clusters as a result of the stellar feedback on the ambient medium. They are called superbubbles and are characterised by the presence of turbulent and supersonic gas motions. This makes star clusters ideal environments for particle acceleration, and potential contributors to the observed Galactic cosmic ray intensity.

Abstract:Cosmic rays with energies up to a few PeV are known to be accelerated within the Milky Way<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR2">2</a>. Traditionally, it has been presumed that supernova remnants were the main source of these very-high-energy cosmic rays<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR4">4</a>, but theoretically it is difficult to accelerate protons to PeV energies<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR6">6</a> and observationally there simply is no evidence of the remnants being sources of hadrons with energies above a few tens of TeV<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR8">8</a>. One possible source of protons with those energies is the Galactic Centre region<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR9">9</a>. Here, we report observations of 1–100 TeV γ rays coming from the 'Cygnus Cocoon'<a href="/articles/s41550-021-01318-y#ref-CR10">10</a>, which is a superbubble that surrounds a region of massive star formation. These γ rays are likely produced by 10–1,000 TeV freshly accelerated cosmic rays that originate from the enclosed star-forming region Cyg OB2. Until now it was not known that such regions could accelerate particles to these energies. The measured flux likely originates from hadronic interactions. The spectral shape and the emission profile of the Cocoon changes from GeV to TeV energies, which reveals the transport of cosmic particles and historical activity in the superbubble.

Abstract:The identification of the main contributors to the locally observed fluxes of cosmic rays is a prime objective in the resolution of the long-standing enigma of the source of cosmic rays. We report on a compelling similarity of the energy and radial distributions of multi-TeV cosmic rays extracted from observations of very-high-energy γ-rays towards the Galactic Centre and two prominent clusters of young massive stars, Cygnus OB2 and Westerlund 1. We interpret this resemblance as evidence that cosmic rays responsible for the diffuse very-high-energy γ-ray emission from the Galactic Centre are accelerated by the ultracompact stellar clusters located in the heart of the Galactic Centre. The derived 1/ r decrement of the cosmic ray density with the distance from a star cluster is a distinct signature of continuous cosmic ray injection into the interstellar medium over a few million years. The lack of brightening of the γ-ray images towards the stellar clusters excludes the leptonic origin of γ-ray radiation. The hard, ∝ E −2.3 -type, power-law energy spectra of parent protons continues up to ~1 PeV. The efficiency of conversion of the kinetic energy of stellar winds to cosmic rays can be as high as 10%, implying that young massive stars may operate as proton PeVatrons with a dominant contribution to the flux of the highest-energy Galactic cosmic rays.
Particle acceleration and the origin of gamma-ray emission from Fermi Bubbles

Abstract:Fermi LAT has discovered two extended gamma-ray bubbles above and below the galactic plane. We propose that their origin is due to the energy release in the Galactic center (GC) as a result of quasi-periodic star accretion onto the central black hole. Shocks generated by these processes propagate into the Galactic halo and accelerate particles there. We show that electrons accelerated up to ~10 TeV may be responsible for the observed gamma-ray emission of the bubbles as a result of inverse Compton (IC) scattering on the relic photons. We also suggest that the Bubble could generate the flux of CR protons at energies > 10^15 eV because the shocks in the Bubble have much larger length scales and longer lifetimes in comparison with those in SNRs. This may explain the the CR spectrum above the knee.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to escape their sources streaming along the local magnetic field lines. We show that this phenomenon generally leads to the excitation of both resonant and non-resonant streaming instabilities. The self-generated magnetic fluctuations induce particle diffusion in extended regions around the source, so that CRs build up a large pressure gradient. By means of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) hybrid particle-in-cell simulations, we show that such a pressure gradient excavates a cavity around the source and leads to the formation of a cosmic ray dominated bubble, inside which diffusivity is strongly suppressed. Based on the trends extracted from self-consistent simulations, we estimate that, in the absence of severe damping of the self-generated magnetic fields, the bubble should keep expanding until pressure balance with the surrounding medium is reached, corresponding to a radius of ∼10–50 pc. The implications of the formation of these regions of low diffusivity for sources of Galactic CRs are discussed. Special care is devoted to estimating the self-generated diffusion coefficient and the grammage that CRs might accumulate in the bubbles before moving into the interstellar medium. Based on the results of 3D simulations, general considerations on the morphology of the γ-ray and synchrotron emission from these extended regions also are outlined.

The Galactic Centre - A Laboratory for Starburst Galaxies (?)

Abstract:The Galactic centre - as the closest galactic nucleus - holds both intrinsic interest and possibly represents a useful analogue to star-burst nuclei which we can observe with orders of magnitude finer detail than these external systems. The environmental conditions in the GC - here taken to mean the inner 200 pc in diameter of the Milky Way - are extreme with respect to those typically encountered in the Galactic disk. The energy densities of the various GC ISM components are typically ~two orders of magnitude larger than those found locally and the star-formation rate density ~three orders of magnitude larger. Unusually within the Galaxy, the Galactic centre exhibits hard-spectrum, diffuse TeV (=10^12 eV) gamma-ray emission spatially coincident with the region's molecular gas. Recently the nuclei of local star-burst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 have also been detected in gamma-rays of such energies. We have embarked on an extended campaign of modelling the broadband (radio continuum to TeV gamma-ray), non- thermal signals received from the inner 200 pc of the Galaxy. On the basis of this modelling we find that star-formation and associated supernova activity is the ultimate driver of the region's non-thermal activity. This activity drives a large-scale wind of hot plasma and cosmic rays out of the GC. The wind advects the locally-accelerated cosmic rays quickly, before they can lose much energy in situ or penetrate into the densest molecular gas cores where star-formation occurs. The cosmic rays can, however, heat/ionize the lower density/warm H2 phase enveloping the cores. On very large scales (~10 kpc) the non-thermal signature of the escaping GC cosmic rays has probably been detected recently as the spectacular 'Fermi bubbles' and corresponding 'WMAP haze'.

Particle Acceleration in the Cygnus Superbubble

Abstract:The Cygnus Cocoon is the first gamma-ray superbubble powered by a massive stellar association, the OB2 association. It was postulated that the combined effects of the stellar winds of all the massive O-type stars of the OB2 association can accelerate the cosmic rays to PeV energy in the Cocoon. The conclusive proof of acceleration to PeV energy in the Cocoon will identify the stellar association as a PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, known as PeVatron. However, the Cocoon has been previously studied only up to 10 TeV. In this contribution, using 1343 days of High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory data, we present the morphological and spectral study of the Cocoon above 1 TeV to beyond 100 TeV. The analysis at higher TeV energies reveals a softer spectrum compared to the GeV gamma-ray observation. This result suggests that the accelerator's efficiency decreases around hundreds of TeV, or after being accelerated, the highest-energy protons escape the region. The study above 10 TeV presented here demonstrates how CR accelerators operate in these extreme energies and how particle transport impacts high-energy emission.

Galactic centre star formation writ large in gamma-rays

Abstract:We have modelled the high-energy astrophysics of the inner 200 pc of the Galaxy with a view to explaining the diffuse, broad-band (radio continuum to TeV gamma-ray), non-thermal signal detected from this region. Our modelling pins down the ISM parameters for the environment wherein cosmic ray (CR) electrons and ions reside in the Galactic centre (GC). We find that the magnetic field in this region is 100-300 microG, the gas density < 60 cm^-3, and that a powerful (> 200 km/s) 'super'-wind acts to remove > 95% of the cosmic rays accelerated in the region before they have time to lose their energy in situ. The ~ 10^39 erg/s carried away by the GC cosmic ray protons is precisely enough to energise the ~GeV gamma-ray emission from the Fermi 'bubbles' recently found to extend north and south of the GC out to distances of ~10 kpc, provided that the bubbles constitute thick targets to the GC protons and that the situation has reached steady state. In such a situation of 'saturation' the hard, uniform spectrum of the bubbles are explained and secondary electron synchrotron explains the non-thermal microwave emission found in WMAP data mirroring the bubbles. Given the very low density of the bubble plasma (<0.01 cm^-3), the pp loss time in the Bubbles is > 5 Gyr. Our scenario thus has the startling implication that a GC source of nonthermal particles of time-averaged power 10^39 erg/s has persisted since the youth of the Galaxy.

Fermi bubble simulations: black hole feedback in the Milky Way

Abstract:The $Fermi$ gamma-ray telescope discovered a pair of bubbles at the Galactic center. These structures are spatially-correlated with the microwave emission detected by the WMAP and Planck satellites. These bubbles were likely inflated by a jet launched from the vicinity of a supermassive black hole in the Galactic center. Using MHD simulations, which self-consistently include interactions between cosmic rays and magnetic fields, we build models of the supersonic jet propagation, cosmic ray transport, and the magnetic field amplification within the $Fermi$ bubbles. Our key findings are that: (1) the synthetic $Fermi$ gamma-ray and WMAP microwave spectra based on our simulations are consistent with the observations, suggesting that a single population of cosmic ray leptons may simultaneously explain the emission across a range of photon energies; (2) the model fits the observed centrally-peaked microwave emission if a second, more recent, pair of jets embedded in the $Fermi$ bubbles is included in the model. This is consistent with the observationally-based suggestion made by Su & Finkbeiner (2012); (3) the radio emission from the bubbles is expected to be strongly polarized due to the relatively high level of field ordering caused by elongated turbulent vortices. This effect is caused by the interaction of the shocks driven by the jets with the preexisting interstellar medium turbulence; (4) a layer of enhanced rotation measure in the shock-compressed region could exist in the bubble vicinity but the level of this enhancement depends on the details of the magnetic topology.

Abstract:Winds are ubiquitous in galaxies and often feature bubble structures. These wind bubbles are characterized by an external forward shock expanding in the surrounding medium and a wind termination shock separating the cool and fast wind from the hot shocked wind. While the forward shock could not be able to accelerate particles efficiently for a long time, at the wind termination shock the necessary conditions for efficient acceleration may be present. We develop a model for particle acceleration at the termination shock of such bubbles analysing the consequences of different possible engines powering the wind. We finally explore the multi-messenger potential of galactic winds in terms of escaping cosmic rays and high-energy gamma rays and neutrinos produced through hadronic interactions.

The Fermi Bubbles: Supersonic AGN Jets with Anisotropic Cosmic Ray Diffusion

Abstract:The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope reveals two large bubbles in the Galaxy, which extend nearly symmetrically ~50 degrees above and below the Galactic center (GC). Using three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations that self-consistently include the dynamical interaction between cosmic rays (CR) and thermal gas, and anisotropic CR diffusion along the magnetic field lines, we show that the key characteristics of the observed gamma-ray bubbles and the spatially-correlated X-ray features in ROSAT 1.5 keV map can be successfully reproduced by a recent jet activity from the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find that after taking into account the projection of the 3D bubbles onto the sky, the physical heights of the bubbles can be much smaller than previously thought, greatly reducing the formation time of the bubbles to about a Myr. This relatively small bubble age is needed to reconcile the simulations with the upper limit of bubbles ages estimated from the cooling time of high-energy electrons. No additional physical mechanisms are required to suppress large-scale hydrodynamic instabilities because the evolution time is too short for them to develop. The simulated CR bubbles are edge-brightened, which is consistent with the observed projected flat surface brightness distribution. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the sharp edges of the observed bubbles can be due to anisotropic CR diffusion along magnetic field lines that drape around the bubbles during their supersonic expansion, with suppressed perpendicular diffusion across the bubble surface. Possible causes of the slight bends of the Fermi bubbles to the west are also discussed.

An energy release (e.g., by tidal disruption events in the Galactic center, GC), generates a cavity with a shock that expands into the local ambient medium of the Galactic halo. A decade or so ago, a phenomenological model of the FBs was suggested as a result of routine star disruptions by the supermassive black hole in the GC which might provide enough energy for large-scale structures, like the FBs. In 2020, analytical and numerical models of the FBs as a process of routine tidal disruption of stars near the GC were developed, which can provide enough cumulative energy to form and maintain large scale structures like the FBs. The disruption events are expected to be ten to hundred events per million years, providing the average power of energy release from the GC into the halo of 3E41 erg/s, which is needed to support the FBs. Analysis of the evolution of superbubbles in exponentially stratified disks concluded that the FB envelope would be destroyed by the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instabilities at late stages. The shell is composed of a swept-up gas of the bubble, whose thickness is much thinner in comparison to the size of the envelope. We assume that hydrodynamic turbulence is excited in the FB envelope by the RT instability. In this case, the universal energy spectrum of turbulence may be developed in the inertial range of wavenumbers of fluctuations (the Kolmogorov-Obukhov spectrum). From our model we suppose the power of the FBs is transformed partly into the energy of hydrodynamic turbulence in the envelope. If so, hydrodynamic turbulence may generate MHD-fluctuations, which accelerate cosmic rays there and generate gamma-ray and radio emission from the FBs. We hope that this model may interpret the observed nonthermal emission from the bubbles.

Abstract:Cosmic rays may be dynamically very important in driving large-scale galactic winds. Edge-on galaxies give us an outsider's view of the radio halo, which shows the presence of extra-planar cosmic-ray electrons and magnetic fields. We present a new radio continuum imaging study of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 4217 in order to study the distribution of extra-planar cosmic rays and magnetic fields. We both observe with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) in the S-band (2-4 GHz) and with LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) at 144 MHz. We measure vertical intensity profiles and exponential scale heights. We re-image both JVLA and LOFAR data at matched angular resolution in order to measure radio spectral indices between 144 MHz and 3 GHz. Confusing point-like sources were subtracted prior to imaging. Intensity profiles are then fitted with cosmic-ray electron advection models, where we use an isothermal wind model that is driven by a combination of pressure from the hot gas and cosmic rays. We discover a large-scale radio halo on one (northwestern) side of the galactic disc. The morphology is reminiscent of a bubble extending up to 20 kpc away from the disc. We find spectral ageing in the bubble which allows us to measure advection speeds of the cosmic-ray electrons accelerating from 300 to 600 $\rm km\, s^{-1}$ . Assuming energy equipartition between the cosmic rays and the magnetic field, we estimate the bubble can be inflated by a modest 10 per cent of the kinetic energy injected by supernovae over its dynamical time-scale of 35 Myr. While no active galactic nucleus (AGN) has been detected, such activity in the recent past cannot be ruled out. Non-thermal bubbles with sizes of tens of kiloparsec may be a ubiquitous feature of star-forming galaxies showing the influence of feedback. To determine possible contributions by AGN feedback, will require deeper observations.

Abstract:The most energetic astrophysical sources in the Milky Way, cosmic accelerators capable of producing high-energy cosmic rays, have resisted discovery for over a century. Up to now, astrophysicists sought these sources mainly by scouring the Galaxy for the gamma rays they are expected to emit. In 2023, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory discovered high-energy neutrinos from the Milky Way, inaugurating a telltale stream of evidence of cosmic-ray production and interaction in the Galaxy.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Radio bubbles, ubiquitous features of the intracluster medium around active galactic nuclei, are known to rise buoyantly for multiple scale heights through the intracluster medium (ICM). It is an open question how the bubbles can retain their high-energy cosmic-ray content over such distances. We propose that the enhanced scattering of cosmic rays due to micromirrors generated in the ICM is a viable mechanism for confining the cosmic rays within bubbles and can qualitatively reproduce their morphology. We discuss the observational implications of such a model of cosmic-ray confinement.
