Abstract:The reaction mechanisms of C–S borylation of aryl sulfides catalyzed with 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ) were investigated by employing the M06-2X-D3/ma-def2-SVP method and basis set. In this study, the SMD model was taken to simulate the solvent effect of 1,4-dioxane. Also, TD-DFT calculations of BQ and methyl(p-tolyl)sulfane were performed in an SMD solvent model. The computational results indicated that BQ and methyl(p-tolyl)sulfane, serving as a photo-catalyst, would be excited under a blue LED of 450 nm, aligning well with experimental observations. Additionally, the role of 3O2 was investigated, revealing that it could be activated into 1O2 from the released energy of 1[BQ + methyl(p-tolyl)sulfane]* or 3[BQ + methyl(p-tolyl)sulfane]*→BQ + methyl(p-tolyl)sulfane process. Then, 1O2, bis(pinacolato)diboron, and methyl(p-tolyl)sulfane would, through a series of reactions, yield the final product, P. The Gibbs free energy surface shows that path a2-2 is optimal, and this path has fewer steps and a lower energy barrier. Electron spin density isosurface graphs were employed to analyze the structures and elucidate the single electron distribution. These computational results offer valuable insights into the studied interactions and related processes and shed light on the mechanisms governing C–S borylation from aryl sulfides and b2pin2 catalyzed with BQ and methyl(p-tolyl)sulfane.

Abstract:Due to boron's metalloid properties, aromatic boron reagents are prevalent synthetic intermediates. The direct borylation of aryl C-H bonds for producing aromatic boron compounds offers an appealing, one-step solution. Despite significant advances in this field, achieving regioselective aryl C-H bond borylation using simple and readily available starting materials still remains a challenge. In this work, we attempted to enhance the reactivity of the electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex by selecting different bases to replace the organic base (NEt3) used in our previous research. To our delight, when using NH4HCO3 as the base, we have achieved a mild visible-light-mediated aromatic C-H bond borylation reaction with exceptional regioselectivity (rr > 40:1 to single isomers). Compared with our previous borylation methodologies, this protocol provides a more efficient and broader scope for aryl C-H bond borylation through the use of N-Bromosuccinimide. The protocol's good functional-group tolerance and excellent regioselectivity enable the functionalization of a variety of biologically relevant compounds and novel cascade transformations. Mechanistic experiments and theoretical calculations conducted in this study have indicated that, for certain arenes, the aryl C-H bond borylation might proceed through a new reaction mechanism, which involves the formation of a novel transient EDA complex.

Abstract:A photoinduced synthesis of S-aryl thiosulfonates through a three-component reaction of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, sodium metabisulfite, and thiourea is achieved. The reaction scope generality with a range of aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates is demonstrated. In this transformation, a radical coupling pathway is proposed with the insertion of sulfur dioxide in the presence of a photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The organic sulfur motifs in S-aryl thiosulfonates originate from the convenient, cheap, and easily available thiourea and sodium metabisulfite.

Abstract:We report that Ru(bpz)32+ is an excellent sensitizer for the photooxygenation of aryl cyclopropanes upon irradiation with visible light. The effectiveness of this photocatalyst enables the synthesis of a range of five-membered endoperoxides in excellent yield with quite low (0.5 mol%) catalyst loadings even when standard household light sources are utilized.

Abstract:Directly with arylsulfonyl chlorides, a green and efficient deborylativesulfonylation of aryl(alkenyl)boronic acids has been developed to access both diarylsulfones and vinylarylsulfones in moderate to excellent yields at room temperature under visible‐light irradiation. This protocol features broad C(sp2)‐arylsulfone applicability, simple operation, accessibility of raw materials and ease of scale‐up. The key to the success of this photoredox transformation is introducing catalytic amounts of additives, naphthalen‐2‐ols, thus boosting the formed electron donor‐acceptor (EDA) complexes, which can dramatically improve not only the reaction efficiency but also the selectivity. This strategy was inspired and derived from specific substrates, representing a rare paradigm of how to exploit a more general reaction system. Moreover, extensive control experiments provide insights into the proposed mechanism.

Abstract:Sulfur-containing compounds are commonly present in both natural and synthetic bioactive molecules. The ability to construct C-S bonds using inexpensive and easily accessible raw materials under mild conditions is an area of significant interest in organic synthesis. In this study, we introduce a novel photo-induced iron-catalyzed strategy that facilitates the transformation of alkyl and heteroaryl carboxylic acids into their respective thioether products. Furthermore, our method also enables the site-selective synthesis of thioethers and sulfoxides from unreactive hydrocarbons under a reaction atmosphere of N-2 or air. This procedure is operationally simple and readily scalable and provides access to high-value sulfur-containing compounds from simple raw materials in one step.

Abstract:Catalytic C(sp3)-H functionalization has provided enormous opportunities to construct organic molecules, facilitating the derivatization of complex pharmaceutical compounds. Within this framework, direct hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) photocatalysis becomes an appealing approach to this goal. However, the viable substrates utilized in these protocols are limited, and the site selectivity shows preference to activated and thermodynamically favored C(sp3)-H bonds. Herein, we describe the development of undirected iron-catalyzed C(sp3)-H borylation, thiolation, and sulfinylation reactions enabled by the photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process. These reactions exhibit remarkably broad substrate scope (>150 examples in total), and most importantly, all of these three reactions show unconventional regioselectivity, with the occurrence of C(sp3)-H borylation, thiolation, and sulfinylation preferentially at the distal methyl position. The procedures are operationally simple and readily scalable and provide access to high-value products from simple hydrocarbons in one step. Mechanistic studies and control experiments indicate that the afforded site selectivity is not only relevant to the HAT species but also largely affected by the use of boron- and sulfone-based radical acceptors.

Abstract:Organoboron compounds are of high significance in organic synthesis due to the unique versatility of boryl substituents to access further modifications. The high demand for the incorporation of boryl moieties into molecular structures has witnessed significant progress, particularly in the C(sp3)-H borylation of hydrocarbons. Taking advantage of special characteristics of photo/electrochemistry, we herein describe the development of an oxidative C(sp3)-H borylation reaction under metal- and oxidant-free conditions, enabled by photoelectrochemical strategy. The reaction exhibits broad substrate scope (>57 examples), and includes the use of simple alkanes, halides, silanes, ketones, esters and nitriles as viable substrates. Notably, unconventional regioselectivity of C(sp3)-H borylation is achieved, with the coupling site of C(sp3)-H borylation selectively located in the distal methyl group. Our method is operationally simple and easily scalable, and offers a feasible approach for the one-step synthesis of high-value organoboron building blocks from simple hydrocarbons, which would provide ample opportunities for drug discovery.

Abstract:Efficient and practical visible-light photoredox borylation of aryl halides and subsequent aerobic oxidative hydroxylation were developed. The protocols use readily available aryl halides and bis(pinacolato)diboron as the starting materials, fac-Ir(ppy)3 as the photocatalyst, and corresponding arylboronic esters and phenols were obtained in good yields. The methods show some advantages including simple equipment, mild conditions, easy operation, and wide substrate scope. Therefore, they should provide a valuable strategy for chemical transformations.

Abstract:The classical Sonogashira reaction of aryl electrophiles in the presence of Pd catalysts has been well established as a potent method for arylalkyne synthesis. However, the site-selective C(sp2)-C(sp) cross-coupling strategy using a non-noble-metal catalyst is rare. An efficient alternative approach for the synthesis of arylalkynes via a Cu-catalyzed Sonogashira-type reaction promoted by visible light is described. This method enables site-selective alkynylation from aryl sulfonium salts derived from diverse arenes to a set of arylalkynes with high selectivity and high functional-group compatibility. Moreover, rapid alkynylation of drug molecules is demonstrated.

Abstract:A N-radical-initiated cyclization involving the sulfonylation of unactivated alkenes through insertion of sulfur dioxide in the presence of visible light under catalyst-free conditions is accomplished. A range of sulfonated 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles can be generated in good yields under photoinduced sulfonylative conditions. Additionally, the corresponding 2-(3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrol-2-yl)methylsulfonyl-1-arylethanones can be easily converted to 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,4-thiazine 1,1-dioxides. This photoinduced transformation occurs efficiently at room temperature under catalyst-free conditions, and various functional groups can be tolerated. A tandem radical process is involved through the iminyl radical-mediated cyclization with the insertion of sulfur dioxide; this process shows high efficiency and good selectivity.
