Abstract:Flux transfer events (FTEs) are a type of magnetospheric phenomena that exhibit distinctive observational signatures from the in-situ spacecraft measurements across the Earth's magnetopause. They are generally believed to possess a magnetic field configuration of a magnetic flux rope and formed through magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause, sometimes accompanied with enhanced plasma convection in the ionosphere. We examine two FTE events under the condition of southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) with a dawn-dusk component at the magnetopause by applying the Grad-Shafranov (GS) reconstruction method to the in-situ measurements by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft to derive the magnetic flux contents associated with the FTE flux ropes. In particular, given a cylindrical magnetic flux rope configuration derived from the GS reconstruction, the magnetic flux content can be characterized by both the toroidal (axial) and poloidal fluxes. We then estimate the amount of magnetic flux (i.e., the reconnection flux) encompassed by the area ``opened" in the ionosphere, based on the ground-based Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) observations. We find that for event 1, the FTE flux rope is oriented in the approximate dawn-dusk direction, and the amount of its poloidal magnetic flux agrees with the corresponding reconnection flux. For event 2, the agreement among the estimates of the magnetic fluxes is uncertain. We provide a detailed description about our interpretation for the topological features of the FTE flux ropes, based on a formation scenario of sequential magnetic field reconnection between adjacent field lines, consistent with our results.

Abstract:Three flux transfer events (FTEs) were detected in magnetosheath near the south cusp of the dawn side by Cluster II during the interval from 11:00 to 11:15UT on March 2nd, 2001. In this paper, we analyze the magnetic morphology and the plasma characteristics of these events using the magnetic field and plasma data observed by the four spacecrafts of Cluster II as well as the electric current density in the region Cluster II passed. The results show that the magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause can occur near the cusp when the IMF BY component is dominant. The difference of p+B2/8τ (the sum of magnetic and plasma pressure) measured inside and outside the events may not be balanced with the tension of the helical magnetic field at the initial stage when a flux tube is forming, and it needs a growing time to reach an equilibrium. The size of the section of the FTEs flux tubes in L‐M plane is about 1.89RE. There are not only axis‐aligned current inside the flux tubes but also annular current, and the axis‐aligned current flows basically along the axis‐aligned magnetic field.

Quantitative Characterization of Magnetic Flux Rope Properties for Two Solar Eruption Events

Abstract:In order to bridge the gap between heliospheric and solar observations of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), one of the key steps is to improve the understanding of their corresponding magnetic structures like the magnetic flux ropes (MFRs). But it remains a challenge to confirm the existence of a coherent MFR before or upon the CME eruption on the Sun and to quantitatively characterize the CME-MFR due to the lack of direct magnetic field measurements in the corona. In this study, we investigate MFR structures originating from two active regions (ARs), AR 11719 and AR 12158, and estimate their magnetic properties quantitatively. We perform nonlinear force-free field extrapolations with preprocessed photospheric vector magnetograms. In addition, remote-sensing observations are employed to find indirect evidence of MFRs on the Sun and to analyze the time evolution of magnetic reconnection flux associated with the flare ribbons during the eruption. A coherent "preexisting" MFR structure prior to the flare eruption is identified quantitatively for one event from the combined analysis of the extrapolation and observation. Then the characteristics of MFRs for two events on the Sun before and during the eruption forming the CME-MFR, including the axial magnetic flux, field line twist, and reconnection flux, are estimated and compared with the corresponding in situ modeling results. We find that the magnetic reconnection associated with the accompanying flares for both events injects a significant amount of flux into the erupted CME-MFRs.

Abstract:With the measurements of the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission at the magnetopause, we investigated the electron distribution and the whistler waves associated with a series of six ion‐scale flux transfer events (FTEs). Based on the magnetic field signature, each FTE can be divided into the core region and the draping region. In the draping regions of the most FTEs, the low‐energy electrons displayed a bidirectional field‐aligned distribution. The medium‐energy electrons showed a field‐aligned or beam distribution in the leading part, while a pancake distribution was presented for the electrons in the trailing part of the draping region, which has never been reported previously. The close correlation between the pancake distribution and the compression of the localized magnetic field suggests that the pancake distribution may be due to the betatron acceleration. The whistler waves associated with the FTEs were observed and categorized into the lower and upper bands according to the frequency range. The lower band whistler waves propagated in variable directions and therefore could be generated locally. The trailing part of the draping region with the electron pancake distribution was considered to be one possible source region. On the contrary, the upper band whistler waves were all found in the core region and propagated antiparallel to the magnetic field and therefore originated from the same source region. The observations confirmed that the FTEs are important channels for the mass and wave transport between the magnetosheath and the inner magnetosphere, and the electron dynamics can be modified during the FTE evolution.
Multiple Magnetic Topologies in Flux Transfer Events: THEMIS Measurements

Abstract:Flux transfer events (FTEs) are local transient magnetic reconnections at the magnetopause (MP) that provide channels for transport of solar wind energy and plasma into the magnetosphere (MSP). All current theoretical models suggest that FTEs are open-flux ropes; however, global simulations show that they contain both open and closed magnetic fields. To clarify this topology, we analyzed 441 events observed by THEMIS and investigated their magnetic topologies. Only one type of open field line was detected in most magnetosheath (MSH) FTEs, independent of the polarity of the B n bipolar signatures. Newly formed MSH field lines were also observed. In the all MP boundary layers FTEs and most MSP FTEs, multiple types of topologies were observed, irrelevant to the B n bipolar polarity. Closed field lines were found in all MP boundary layers and MSP FTEs. Meanwhile very few boundary FTEs contained the newly formed MSH flux. In some situations, only closed field lines were seen in MSP FTEs, which are referred to as the fossil FTEs. These results, which largely differ from the traditional view, demonstrate the existence of complex magnetic topologies in FTEs. Based on these results, we propose a new 3D FTE picture to modify the current FTE models.
An almost complete disappearance of open-flux polar cap for strongly northward interplanetary magnetic field

Abstract:Abstract The Earth’s magnetosphere is the region of space where plasma behavior is dominated by the geomagnetic field. It has a long tail typically extending hundreds of Earth radii (RE) with plentiful open magnetic fluxes threading the magnetopause associated with magnetic reconnection and momentum transfer from the solar wind. The open-flux is greatly reduced when the interplanetary magnetic field points northward, but the extent of the magnetotail remains unknown. Here we report direct observations of an almost complete disappearance of the open-flux polar cap characterized by merging poleward edges of a conjugate horse-collar aurora (HCA) in both hemispheres’ polar ionosphere. The conjugate HCA is generated by particle precipitation due to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the dawn and dusk cold dense plasma sheets (CDPS). These CDPS are consist of solar wind plasma captured by a continuous dual-lobe magnetic reconnections, which is further squeezed into the central magnetotail, resulting in a short “calabash-shaped” magnetotail.

Abstract:Flux transfer events (FTEs) are magnetic flux ropes formed at planetary magnetopauses (MPs). Although evidence suggests that FTEs form through time-dependent magnetic reconnection, details of that process and 3D structure of the flux ropes remain largely unclear. This letter presents Double Star/TC-1 data of an FTE occurred on 7 April 2004 which show that the FTE was separated by two X-lines moving south-dawnward. In particular, the electron energy-pitch angle distribution implies that the FTE was composed of flux ropes of all four possible magnetic topologies, indicating that the field lines must have reconnected multiple times. This is an intrinsic property of FTEs formed by 3D multiple X-line reconnection distinguished from quasi 2D FTE models. This knowledge of FTE magnetic topologies helps to improve our understanding of solar wind- magnetosphere coupling at the MP.

An Analysis of the Correlation Between the Fluxes of High-Energy Electrons and Low-Middle-energy Electrons in the Magnetosphere

Abstract:The variation of the flux of energetic electrons in the magnetosphere has been proven to be strongly related to the solar wind speed. Observations of GEO orbit show that the flux of low-energy electrons is not only modulated by the solar wind speed, but, if a time delay is added, is also positively correlated to the flux of high-energy electrons. This feature provides a possible method to forecast the flux of high-energy electrons in GEO orbit. In this study, the correlations of the fluxes between the high-energy electrons and low-middle-energy electrons obtained at different L values and in different orbits are investigated to develop the application of this feature. Based on the analysis of long–term data observed by NOAA POES and GOES, the correlations between the fluxes of high-energy electrons and low–middle–energy electrons are good enough at different L values and in different orbits in quiet time, but this correlation is strongly affected by CME–driven geomagnetic storms.
Unveiling Mass Transfer in Solar Flares: Insights from Elemental Abundance Evolutions Observed by Chang'E-2 Solar X-ray Monitor

Abstract:Understanding how elemental abundances evolve during solar flares helps shed light on the mass and energy transfer between different solar atmospheric layers. However, prior studies have mostly concentrated on averaged abundances or specific flare phases, leaving a gap in exploring the comprehensive observations throughout the entire flare process. Consequently, investigations into this area are relatively scarce. Exploiting the Solar X-ray Monitor data obtained from the Chang'E-2 lunar orbiter, we present two comprehensive soft X-ray spectroscopic observations of flares in active regions, AR 11149 and 11158, demonstrating elemental abundance evolutions under different conditions. Our findings unveil the inverse first ionization potential (IFIP) effect during flares for Fe for the first time, and reaffirm its existence for Si. Additionally, we observed a rare depletion of elemental abundances, marking the second IFIP effect in flare decay phases. Our study offers a CSHKP model-based interpretation to elucidate the formation of both the FIP and IFIP effects in flare dynamics, with the inertia effect being incorporated into the ponderomotive force fractionation model.

Abstract:From 11:10 to 11:40UT on January 26, 2001 the four Cluster II spacecraft were located in the duskside high latitude regions of the magnetosheath and magnetosheath boundary layer (MSBL). During this time Interval the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) had a negative B z component. A detailed study on the multiple flux ropes (MFRs) observed in this period is conducted in this paper. It is found that: (1) The multiple flux ropes in the high latitude MSBL appeared quasi‐periodically with a repeated time period of about 78s, which is much shorter than the averaged occurring period (about 8–11min) of the flux transfer events (FTEs) at the dayside magnetopause (MP). (2) All the flux ropes observed in this event had a strong core magnetic field. The axial orientation of the most flux ropes is found to lie in the direction of the minimum magnetic field variance; a few flux ropes had their axes lying in the direction of the middle magnetic field variance; while for the remainders their principle axes could not be determined by the method of Principal Axis Analysis (PAA). The reason that causes this complexity relys on the different trajectories of the spacecraft passing through the flux ropes. (3) Each flux rope had a good corresponding HT frame of reference in which it was in a quasi‐steady state. All flux ropes moved along the surface of the MP in a similar direction indicating that these flux ropes all came from the dawnside low latitude. Their radial scale is 1– 2 R E , comparable to the normal diameter of FTEs observed atthe dayside MP. (4) The energetic ions originated from the magnetosphere flowed out to the magnetosheath on the whole, while the solar wind plasma flowed into the magnetosphere along the axis of the flux ropes. The flux ropes offered channels for the transport of the solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere and the escaping of the magnetospheric plasma into the interplanetary space. (5) Each event was accompanied by an enhanced reversal of the dusk‐dawn electric field, which could be identified to be the convective electric field in nature.
Observations of the Field-Aligned Residual Flow Inside Magnetic Cloud Structure

Abstract:In this paper, we report two MC events observed by WIND spacecraft with good examples of field-aligned residual flow inside the MC structure. For both events, the co-moving frames are determined through the deHoffman-Teller (HT) analysis and the axial orientations are inferred by the newly developed minimal residue (MR) method. The nature coordinate system for both events are constructed with velocity of the HT frame and the inferred MC axis, the field and flow remaining in the HT frame are analyzed at this coordinate system. As a result, we find that the residual flows in the co-moving HT frame of the two MC events are almost anti-parallel to the helical magnetic field. We speculate that the field-aligned residual flows are large scale coherent hydrodynamic vortices co-moving with the MCs at the supersonic speed near 1 AU. Data analyses show that the event in slow ambient solar wind is expanding at 1 AU and another one in fast solar wind does not show apparent expansion. Proton behaviors for both events are quasi-isothermal. Accelerated HT analysis shows that both events have no suitable HT frame with constant accelerations, which suggests that both events may be moving at the constant speed near 1 AU under the assumptions of the HT analysis. For both events, the ratio of the dynamic pressure to the magnetic pressure is larger than that of the thermal pressure to magnetic pressure, which suggests that the dynamic effects due to the plasma flows remaining in the co-moving HT frame are more important than the thermal effects in the study of MC evolution and propagation.

Charge accumulation can occur due to the dipole magnetic and convective electric fields in this region. However, until the recent Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, there were few means to detect charge distribution in situ. We report unambiguous in situ observation of the spatial distribution of the excess charge density in the inner magnetosphere by the MMS mission. We find that a positive (negative) charge accumulates in the dusk (dawn) side inner magnetospheres, which is contrary to the long assumed overall quasi-neutrality of space plasma. These observations and results offer insight into magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling.

Abstract:The flux asymmetries measured by spectrometers on board spacecraft contain information on particle parameters. The net flux intensity (NFI) method provides a tool to evaluate these parameters. The NFI method is valid when both the spin period of the spacecraft and the time resolution of the particle spectrometers are much shorter than the characteristic time-scale of the particle flux variations. We apply the NFI analysis to the flux asymmetry measurements made by GEOS 2 at the nightside geosynchronous orbit in the late substorm growth phase. The cross-tail current of energetic ions, their pressure gradient and average drift velocity, as well as a field-aligned flows are investigated. Current disruption at substorm onset and the –convection surge” mechanism during dipolarization of the magnetic field are directly observed.
