Abstract:We produce a characterization of finite metric spaces which are given by the effective resistance of a graph. This characterization is applied to the more general context of resistance metrics defined by Kigami. A countably infinite resistance metric gives rise to a sequence of finite, increasing graphs with invariant effective resistance. We show that these graphs have a unique limit graph in terms of the convergence of edge weights and that their associated random walks converge weakly to the random walk on the limit graph. If the limit graph is recurrent, its effective resistance is identified as the initial resistance metric.

Abstract:The graphical notion of effective resistance has found wide-ranging applications in many areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and control theory. By the nature of its construction, effective resistance can only be computed in undirected graphs and yet in several areas of its application, directed graphs arise as naturally (or more naturally) than undirected ones. In part I of this work, we propose a generalization of effective resistance to directed graphs that preserves its control-theoretic properties in relation to consensus-type dynamics. We proceed to analyze the dependence of our algebraic definition on the structural properties of the graph and the relationship between our construction and a graphical distance. The results make possible the calculation of effective resistance between any two nodes in any directed graph and provide a solid foundation for the application of effective resistance to problems involving directed graphs.

Abstract:In Part I of this work we defined a generalization of the concept of effective resistance to directed graphs, and we explored some of the properties of this new definition. Here, we use the theory developed in Part I to compute effective resistances in some prototypical directed graphs. This exploration highlights cases where our notion of effective resistance for directed graphs behaves analogously to our experience from undirected graphs, as well as cases where it behaves in unexpected ways.

Abstract:We investigate the concept of effective resistance in connection graphs, expanding its traditional application from undirected graphs. We propose a robust definition of effective resistance in connection graphs by focusing on the duality of Dirichlet-type and Poisson-type problems on connection graphs. Additionally, we delve into random walks, taking into account both node transitions and vector rotations. This approach introduces novel concepts of effective conductance and resistance matrices for connection graphs, capturing mean rotation matrices corresponding to random walk transitions. Thereby, it provides new theoretical insights for network analysis and optimization.

Abstract:The fields of effective resistance and optimal transport on graphs are filled with rich connections to combinatorics, geometry, machine learning, and beyond. In this article we put forth a bold claim: that the two fields should be understood as one and the same, up to a choice of $p$. We make this claim precise by introducing the parameterized family of $p$-Beckmann distances for probability measures on graphs and relate them sharply to certain Wasserstein distances. Then, we break open a suite of results including explicit connections to optimal stopping times and random walks on graphs, graph Sobolev spaces, and a Benamou-Brenier type formula for $2$-Beckmann distance. We further explore empirical implications in the world of unsupervised learning for graph data and propose further study of the usage of these metrics where Wasserstein distance may produce computational bottlenecks.

Abstract:Extending work of Foster, Doyle, and others, we show how the Foster Theorems, a family of results concerning effective resistances on finite graphs, can in certain cases be extended to infinite graphs. A family of sum rules is then obtained, which allows one to easily calculate the sum of the resistances over all paths of a given length. The results are illustrated with some of the most common grids in the plane, including the square, triangular, and hexagonal grids.

Abstract:Effective resistances are ubiquitous in graph algorithms and network analysis. In this work, we study sublinear time algorithms to approximate the effective resistance of an adjacent pair $s$ and $t$. We consider the classical adjacency list model for local algorithms. While recent works have provided sublinear time algorithms for expander graphs, we prove several lower bounds for general graphs of $n$ vertices and $m$ edges: <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://1.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> needs $\Omega(n)$ queries to obtain $1.01$-approximations of the effective resistance of an adjacent pair $s$ and $t$, even for graphs of degree at most 3 except $s$ and $t$. 2.For graphs of degree at most $d$ and any parameter $\ell$, it needs $\Omega(m/\ell)$ queries to obtain $c \cdot \min\{d, \ell\}$-approximations where $c>0$ is a universal constant. Moreover, we supplement the first lower bound by providing a sublinear time $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm for graphs of degree 2 except the pair $s$ and $t$. One of our technical ingredients is to bound the expansion of a graph in terms of the smallest non-trivial eigenvalue of its Laplacian matrix after removing edges. We discover a new lower bound on the eigenvalues of perturbed graphs (resp. perturbed matrices) by incorporating the effective resistance of the removed edge (resp. the leverage scores of the removed rows), which may be of independent interest.

Resistance distance distribution in large sparse random graphs

Abstract:We consider an Erdos-Renyi random graph consisting of N vertices connected by randomly and independently drawing an edge between every pair of them with probability c/N so that at N->infinity one obtains a graph of finite mean degree c. In this regime, we study the distribution of resistance distances between the vertices of this graph and develop an auxiliary field representation for this quantity in the spirit of statistical field theory. Using this representation, a saddle point evaluation of the resistance distance distribution is possible at N->infinity in terms of an 1/c expansion. The leading order of this expansion captures the results of numerical simulations very well down to rather small values of c; for example, it recovers the empirical distribution at c=4 or 6 with an overlap of around 90%. At large values of c, the distribution tends to a Gaussian of mean 2/c and standard deviation sqrt{2/c^3}. At small values of c, the distribution is skewed toward larger values, as captured by our saddle point analysis, and many fine features appear in addition to the main peak, including subleading peaks that can be traced back to resistance distances between vertices of specific low degrees and the rest of the graph. We develop a more refined saddle point scheme that extracts the corresponding degree-differentiated resistance distance distributions. We then use this approach to recover analytically the most apparent of the subleading peaks that originates from vertices of degree 1. Rather intuitively, this subleading peak turns out to be a copy of the main peak, shifted by one unit of resistance distance and scaled down by the probability for a vertex to have degree 1. We comment on a possible lack of smoothness in the true N->infinity distribution suggested by the numerics.

Abstract:We prove an explicit formula of hitting times in terms of enumerations of spanning trees for random walks on general connected graphs. We apply the formula to improve Lawler's bound of hitting times for general graphs, prove a sharp bound of hitting times for adjacent vertices and derive closed formulas of hitting times for some special graphs.
Graphon-Theoretic Approach to Central Limit Theorems for $ε$-Independence

Abstract:We establish a central limit theorem for the sum of $\epsilon$-independent random variables, extending both the classical and free probability setting. Central to our approach is the use of graphon limits to characterize the limiting distribution, which depends on the asymptotic structure of the underlying graphs governing $\epsilon$-independence. This framework yields a range of exotic limit laws, interpolating between free and classical cases and allowing for mixtures such as free and classical convolutions of the semi-circle and Gaussian distributions. We provide a complete characterization of the limiting law, captured as the distribution of an operator on the full Fock space. We extend our main result to the multivariate setting as well as the non-identically distributed case. The proof provides insights into the combinatorial structure of $\epsilon$-independence, shedding light on a natural connection between the graph of crossings of the partitions involved and the graphon limit of the graphs of $\epsilon$-independence.

Abstract:De Finetti's classical result of [18] identifying the law of an exchangeable family of random variables as a mixture of i.i.d. laws was extended to structure theorems for more complex notions of exchangeability by Aldous [1,2,3], Hoover [41,42], Kallenberg [44] and Kingman [47]. On the other hand, such exchangeable laws were first related to questions from combinatorics in an independent analysis by Fremlin and Talagrand [29], and again more recently in Tao [62], where they appear as a natural proxy for the `leading order statistics' of colourings of large graphs or hypergraphs. Moreover, this relation appears implicitly in the study of various more bespoke formalisms for handling `limit objects' of sequences of dense graphs or hypergraphs in a number of recent works, including Lovász and Szegedy [52], Borgs, Chayes, Lovász, Sós, Szegedy and Vesztergombi [17], Elek and Szegedy [24] and Razborov [54,55]. However, the connection between these works and the earlier probabilistic structural results seems to have gone largely unappreciated. In this survey we recall the basic results of the theory of exchangeable laws, and then explain the probabilistic versions of various interesting questions from graph and hypergraph theory that their connection motivates (particularly extremal questions on the testability of properties for graphs and hypergraphs). We also locate the notions of exchangeability of interest to us in the context of other classes of probability measures subject to various symmetries, in particular contrasting the methods employed to analyze exchangeable laws with related structural results in ergodic theory, particular the Furstenberg-Zimmer structure theorem for probability-preserving $\mathbb {Z}$-systems, which underpins Furstenberg's ergodic-theoretic proof of Szemerédi's Theorem. The forthcoming paper [10]--hereditarytest will make a much more elaborate appeal to the link between exchangeable laws and dense (directed) hypergraphs to establish various results in property testing.

Abstract:Formal Laplace operators are analyzed for a large class of resistance networks with vertex weights. The graphs are completed with respect to the minimal resistance path metric. Compactness and a novel connectivity hypothesis for the completed graphs play an essential role. A version of the Dirichlet problem is solved. Self adjoint Laplace operators and the probability semigroups they generate are constructed using reflecting and absorbing conditions on subsets of the graph boundary.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new simple but powerful general technique for the study of edge- and vertex-reinforced processes with super-linear reinforcement, based on the use of order statistics for the number of edge, respectively of vertex, traversals. The technique relies on upper bound estimates for the number of edge traversals, proved in a different context by Cotar and Limic [Ann. Appl. Probab. (2009)] for finite graphs with edge reinforcement. We apply our new method both to edge- and to vertex-reinforced random walks with super-linear reinforcement on arbitrary infinite connected graphs of bounded degree. We stress that, unlike all previous results for processes with super-linear reinforcement, we make no other assumption on the graphs. For edge-reinforced random walks, we complete the results of Limic and Tarrès [Ann. Probab. (2007)] and we settle a conjecture of Sellke [Technical Report 94-26, Purdue University (1994)] by showing that for any reciprocally summable reinforcement weight function w, the walk traverses a random attracting edge at all large times. For vertex-reinforced random walks, we extend results previously obtained on Z by Volkov [Ann. Probab. (2001)] and by Basdevant, Schapira and Singh [Ann. Probab. (2014)], and on complete graphs by Benaim, Raimond and Schapira [ALEA (2013)]. We show that on any infinite connected graph of bounded degree, with reinforcement weight function w taken from a general class of reciprocally summable reinforcement weight functions, the walk traverses two random neighbouring attracting vertices at all large times.

Abstract:We review results on linearly edge-reinforced random walks. On finite graphs, the process has the same distribution as a mixture of reversible Markov chains. This has applications in Bayesian statistics and it has been used in studying the random walk on infinite graphs. On trees, one has a representation as a random walk in an independent random environment. We review recent results for the random walk on ladders: recurrence, a representation as a random walk in a random environment, and estimates for the position of the random walker.

Abstract:Large unweighted directed graphs are commonly used to capture relations between entities. A fundamental problem in the analysis of such networks is to properly define the similarity or dissimilarity between any two vertices. Despite the significance of this problem, statistical characterization of the proposed metrics has been limited. We introduce and develop a class of techniques for analyzing random walks on graphs using stochastic calculus. Using these techniques we generalize results on the degeneracy of hitting times and analyze a metric based on the Laplace transformed hitting time (LTHT). The metric serves as a natural, provably well-behaved alternative to the expected hitting time. We establish a general correspondence between hitting times of the Brownian motion and analogous hitting times on the graph. We show that the LTHT is consistent with respect to the underlying metric of a geometric graph, preserves clustering tendency, and remains robust against random addition of non-geometric edges. Tests on simulated and real-world data show that the LTHT matches theoretical predictions and outperforms alternatives.

Abstract:A theorem of Frieze from 1985 asserts that the total weight of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph $K_n$ whose edges get independent weights from the distribution $UNIFORM[0,1]$ converges to Apéry's constant in probability, as $n\to\infty$. We generalize this result to sequences of graphs $G_n$ that converge to a graphon $W$. Further, we allow the weights of the edges to be drawn from different distributions (subject to moderate conditions). The limiting total weight $\kappa(W)$ of the minimum spanning tree is expressed in terms of a certain branching process defined on $W$, which was studied previously by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan in connection with the giant component in inhomogeneous random graphs.

Abstract:Two infinite walks on the same finite graph are called compatible if it is possible to introduce delays into them in such a way that they never collide. Years ago, Peter Winkler asked the question: for which graphs are two independent walks compatible with positive probability. Up to now, no such graphs were found. We show in this paper that large complete graphs have this property. The question is equivalent to a certain dependent percolation with a power-law behavior: the probability that the origin is blocked at distance n but not closer decreases only polynomially fast and not, as usual, exponentially.

Probability graphons and P-variables: two equivalent viewpoints for dense weighted graph limits

Abstract:We develop further the graph limit theory for dense weighted graph sequences. In particular, we consider probability graphons, which have recently appeared in graph limit theory as continuum representations of weighted graphs, and we introduce P-variables, which also appear in the context of the Aldous-Hoover theorem for exchangeable infinite random arrays, as an alternative continuum representation for weighted graphs. In particular, we explain how P-variables are related to probability graphons in a similar way in which random variables are related to probability measures. We define a metric for P-variables (inspired by action convergence in the graph limit theory of sparse graph sequences) and show that convergence of P-variables in this metric is equivalent to probability graphons convergence. We exploit this equivalence to translate several results from the theory of probability graphons to P-variables. In addition, we prove several properties of P-variables convergence, thus showing new properties also for probability graphons convergence and demonstrating the power of the connection between probability graphons and P-variables. Furthermore, we show how P-variables convergence can be easily modified and generalised to cover other combinatorial structures such as bipartite graphs and hypergraphs.
