Abstract:The modern physics course is a crucial gateway for physics majors, introducing concepts beyond the scope of K-12 education. Despite its significance, content varies widely among institutions. This study analyzes 167 modern physics syllabi from 127 US research intensive institutions, employing emergent coding using both human and Natural Language Processing methods from public sources (51.5%) and private correspondence (48.5%). Public course catalogs were consulted to identify pre- and co-requisites, with 37.1% of students having completed calculus II. Foundational topics like Newtonian mechanics (94%), electricity and magnetism (84.4%), and waves or optics (77.2%) were frequently required. Quantum physics (94%), atomic physics (83%), and relativity (70%) were most commonly taught. The study highlights the lack of uniformity in modern physics curricula, emphasizing the importance of a consistent and comprehensive education for physics majors across universities. This insight contributes to the ongoing discourse on optimizing physics education in higher education.

Abstract:We argue that most advances in science and technology during the past and the present centuries rely on modern physics concepts developed in the early $20$th century. The reliance is so profound that any improvement of literacy of science and technology falters in the absence of those concepts in physics education. Despite this important role, there are some remarks in literature concerning that modern topics have gone unnoticed in physics textbooks \cite{cht}. We discuss confirmation of this claim and also argue that physics education without reference to the difficulties of classical concepts and the need for paradigm change can lead to serious misconceptions and gives an incorrect image of science.

Abstract:At many physics departments a significant fraction of teaching is in support of engineers and scientists in other majors. These service courses are thus an automatic crucible of interdisciplinary interaction, and at times, strife. For example, the traditional algebra-based physics course is often considered by both biology faculty and students as having little relevance to their discipline. To address this issue, our multi-disciplinary multi-university team has been negotiating the role of a physics in the curriculum of life-science students; In NEXUS/Physics we have designed a class that stresses traditional physics skills but in contexts chosen to better meet the needs of life science students. Non-standard topics include chemical energy, diffusion and random motion, and thermodynamics with careful discussions of entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy. Explorations into how physics intertwines with an engineer's curriculum suggests places where analogous negotiations could lead to substantial modifications of physics courses for engineers that substantially enhance their value for engineering students.

Abstract:Recruiting and retaining highly qualified physics and physical science teachers is critical for maintaining America's global competitiveness. Unfortunately, only one third of the high school teachers in physics have a degree in physics and an even smaller number of physical science teachers in middle school have a good grasp of the scientific content they teach. Moreover, teachers often lack adequate pedagogical content knowledge to teach science effectively. Here, we discuss the development, implementation, and assessment of a course for science and engineering undergraduates designed to increase awareness and help them develop an interest and a deeper appreciation of the intellectual demands of physics teaching. The course focused on increasing student enthusiasm and confidence in teaching by providing well supported teaching opportunities and exposure to physics education research. The course assessment methods include 1) pre/post-test measures of attitude and expectations about science teaching, 2) self and peer evaluation of student teaching, 3) content-based pre/post-tests given to students who received instruction from the student teachers, and 4) audio-taped focus group discussions in the absence of the instructor and TA to evaluate student perspective on different aspects of the course and its impact.

Abstract:At South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education physics is taught over a wide range of courses. In addition to the more conventional courses found in science, technology and education faculties there is a physics input into areas such as beauty therapy, applied biology, catering, chiropody, dental technology, environmental health, food technology, hairdressing, human-movement studies, industrial design, applied life sciences, marine technology, medical laboratory science, physiological measurement, nursing and speech therapy. Due to the fundamental differences in emphasis required when teaching physics as a 'minor' subject on these types of courses, and since the authors have no courses which lead to a 'major' physics qualification, it is necessary to develop a rational strategy for teaching physics as a 'service' subject. If this is not achieved then staff satisfaction and student interest are likely to suffer. They describe their strategy.

Abstract:Modern physics is now a regular course for non-physics majors who do not have to take the accompanying laboratory. This lack of an experimental component puts the engineering students at a disadvantage. A possible solution is the use of computer simulations to add a constructivist element to the class. In this work, we present a set of computer simulations of fundamental experiments, a key to the teaching of modern physics, as well as their in-class implementation and assessment. Preliminary results indicate that the use of these simulations produces a substantial increase in student comprehension.

Abstract:This is a report of a course on modern physics designed and taught to undergraduate science and engineering students in the Spring of 2013. The course, meant for freshmen, attempts to integrate statistical mechanics into non-classical physics and introduces some novel teaching ideas such as the field approach in contrast to typical wave and particle viewpoints traditionally covered in usual textbooks. The various modern applications of quantum theory in realizing practical devices are recounted in a way that is amenable to beginners. Especially, we describe the inclusion of visually appealing and carefully designed robust experiments inside the formal classroom environment. This collection of applications and demonstrations serves as a useful collection of teaching aids and can be easily transformed into active learning exercises. The impact of this teaching strategy on student learning and its role in exciting an interest in physics is assessed.

Abstract:Abstract Education goals have evolved to emphasize student acquisition of the knowledge and attributes necessary to successfully contribute to the workforce and global economy of the twenty-first Century. The new education standards emphasize higher end skills including reasoning, creativity, and open problem solving. Although there is substantial research evidence and consensus around identifying essential twenty-first Century skills, there is a lack of research that focuses on how the related subskills interact and develop over time. This paper provides a brief review of physics education research as a means for providing a context towards future work in promoting deep learning and fostering abilities in high-end reasoning. Through a synthesis of the literature around twenty-first Century skills and physics education, a set of concretely defined education and research goals are suggested for future research, along with how these may impact the next generation physics courses and how physics should be taught in the future.

Abstract:During recent collaboration with colleagues to revise our institution's general-education curriculum, I encountered many perceptions of what we mean by the Natural Sciences. I was surprised to find that perceptions of scientific pedagogy varied significantly among the scientific disciplines, especially concerning issues of philosophy of science and epistemology, manifested in the approaches to teaching theoretical concepts and their development. These realizations suggest that Physics occupies a singular role in college curricula, introducing students, even at the introductory level, to the acquisition of knowledge by theoretical means and the assessment of theory based on experimental evidence.

Abstract:Introductory mechanics ("physics 1") is a critical gateway course for students desiring to pursue a STEM career. A major challenge with this course is that there is a large spread in the students' incoming physics preparation, and this level of preparation is strongly predictive of a students' performance. The level of incoming preparation is also largely determined by a student's educational privilege, and so this course can amplify inequities in K-12 education and provide a barrier to a STEM career for students from marginalized groups. Here, we present a novel introductory course design to address such equity challenges in physics 1. We designed the course based on the concept of deliberate practice to give students targeted, scaffolded, and repeated opportunities to engage in research-identified practices and decisions required for effective problem-solving. We used real-world problems, as they carry less resemblance to physics high school problems, and so even the students with the best high school physics instruction have little experience or skill in solving them. The students learned the physics content knowledge they needed in future courses, particularly in engineering, and their problem-solving skills improved substantially. Furthermore, the success in the course was not correlated with incoming physics preparation, in stark contrast to the outcomes from traditional physics 1 courses. These findings suggest that we made physics 1 more equitable by employing a deliberate practice approach in the context of real-world problem-solving.
The Influence of Teaching Approach on Students' Conceptual Learning in Physics

Abstract:Physics is fundamental to secure future needs for scientific and technological competence (Angell et al., 2004), but many countries experience a drop in students' performances in international assessments (Organisation for Economic Co-operation Development [OECD], 2018), as well as in rates of enrolment in undergraduate programs in scientific disciplines (STEM). Socio-constructivist theories have produced a reforming movement in several educational systems, in particular in the area of sciences, but teacher often consider them an idealistic view of education and do not consider themselves metacognitively competent enough to foster thinking in the classroom. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of different teaching methods on high-school students' conceptual knowledge of physics, after the effect of science-related beliefs and critical thinking skills was controlled. We adopted a mixed-method with sequential design, in which quantitative and qualitative data flow are inter-mixed. In specific, we interviewed four high school physics teachers to identify teaching approaches (qualitative approach) and compared them in terms of efficacy on students' performances (quantitative approach). Four teachers and 77 10th grade students participated. Teachers were interviewed during the school years and asked questions about their teaching experience, their teaching approach (Kang and Wallace, 2005) and their epistemic beliefs (Tsai, 2002). Students performances in Science-related beliefs (Conley et al., 2004), critical thinking (Cornell Critical Thinking Test Level X, Millman et al., 2005), and conceptual knowledge in physics (The Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation, Ramlo, 2002) were evaluated twice, at the beginning and at the end of the school year. The independent-sample t-tests on pre-test variables did not reveal any statistically significant difference between groups. Results from the complex samples GLM revealed statistically significant differences on post-test scores in conceptual knowledge in physics, after the effect of covariates was controlled. Overall, the study contributes to our understanding on current teaching practices in school, and their effect on students' conceptual understanding of physics concepts.
Physics in Films: A New Approach to Teaching Science

Abstract:Over the past year and a half we have developed an innovative approach to the teaching of `Physical Science', a general education course typically found in the curricula of nearly every college and university. The new approach uses popular movies to illustrate the principles of physical science, analyzing individual scenes against the background of the fundamental physical laws. The impact of being able to understand why, in reality, the scene could or could not have occurred as depicted in the film, what the director got right and what he got wrong, has excited student interest enormously in a course that, when taught in the traditional mode, is usually considered to be `too hard and boring'. The performance of students on exams reflected the increased attention to and retention of basic physical concepts, a result that was a primary goal of the `Physics in Films' approach. Following the first offering of the revitalization of the Physical Science course, in which action and sci-fi films were the primary source of the scene clips used in class, the instructors have demonstrated the versatility of the approach by building variations of the course around other genres, as well --`Physics in Films: Superheroes' and `Physics in Films: Pseudoscience'. A parallel approach to the general education course in astronomy is currently being discussed; many others are in our thoughts.

Abstract:This study examines the status of physics education in EU high schools, focusing on student understanding, curriculum organization, and knowledge transmission. The research aims to uncover potential gaps or opportunities for improvement in physics education in the European Union by looking at five important characteristics. Enhancing the overall educational experience and preparing students for future academic and professional pursuits requires an understanding of the quality of knowledge imparted to students, the efficacy of the curriculum in reaching educational goals, and the level of student comprehension. By offering insightful information, this study can guide instructional practices and policy in secondary schools across the European Union, potentially leading to significant improvements in physics education. A more thorough investigation of pedagogical strategies and their effects on student learning outcomes may benefit future studies in this field. Furthermore, examining any variations in physics education among the different EU member states may provide insightful comparative analysis.

Abstract:Recent years have seen a growing interest in modernizing physics and science curricula around the world. While many science educators and curriculum developers design instructional resources to successfully introduce topics of Einsteinian physics to young learners, it is clear that successful curriculum development needs to rest on successful teacher professional development.Teachers with or without science backgrounds were trained in short professional learning workshops or completed micro-credential courses. The courses enabled teachers to gain knowledge and confidence to deliver the Einstein-First program. Detailed lesson plans and instructional videos for teachers define the lessons. Questionnaires were used to collect data, and teacher interviews were conducted following the various teacher training programs. The research results show that teachers effectively deliver the Einsteinian physics programs and that their subject matter and pedagogical content knowledge increased. In addition, teacher attitudes were favorable towards modernizing the physics curriculum. We conclude that it is feasible to upskill teachers from diverse backgrounds in Einsteinian physics and break the cycle that has inhibited the modernization of school curricula.

Abstract:Critical thinking has been focused on 21st-century skills. The current study analyzed the national curriculum for Physics (2006) to determine the importance and elaboration of critical thinking skills essential for 21st-century learners. The document was analyzed through qualitative content analysis by facilitating NVivo 12. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking through learning outcomes requiring students to explain phenomena, solve problems, analyze data, and draw conclusions. Assessment objectives also evaluate these skills. Interactive teaching methods like inquiry, discussions, and concept mapping are suggested to promote critical thinking. The analysis found that critical thinking abilities are highlighted as important in the preamble, with aims to improve process skills, problem-solving, and application of concepts. Specific standards call for developing reasoning and explanation abilities. Teaching strategies provide guidelines for student-centered methods that nurture critical thinking. Assessment methods test skills in explaining unfamiliar situations, solving new problems, interpreting data, and conducting valid inquiries. Overall, this physics curriculum comprehensively integrates opportunities for developing and assessing critical thinking abilities across all aspects - learning outcomes, teaching methods, and assessments. Recommendations include ensuring guidelines on interactive methods are implemented by teachers and assessments evaluate higher-order skills rather than just recall. Implementation fidelity would determine the development of critical thinking through this curriculum.

Abstract:Abstract We present different approach in teaching physics for high-school students for various branches of physics, such as thermodynamics, electromagnetism, etc. When we use term “different”, we want to offer complementary approach to the traditional one. This approach involves bringing everyday situations [1], such as drinking tea in a desert, making coffee, etc., to the physics classroom context without theoretical teaching with formulae, laws, and definitions in the beginning or opening of the class. The idea is to develop logical concepts to prepare students for theoretical teaching and introduce formulae to them in order to have a complete frame of specific physical phenomena. Some classes include practical demonstrations [2] where students immerse in discussion and spontaneously involve in growing logical concepts needed for better adoption of definitions, laws, and formulae [3].

Abstract:Physics community is generally concerned about the decrease in Physics enrollment. Due to the deficiency of specially qualified Physics teachers, high school Physics is sometimes taught by general science teachers who may not be trained to motivate students to study Physics. These students will neither be inclined to register into Physics courses nor plan to teach Physics. They will be unable to find out the relevance of Physics with daily life, its application in different disciplines and even the job market. In this situation, we have to carefully make the existing Physics programs more attractive, instead of closing them down. We discuss teaching methodology and course requirements that will help to make Physics programs more attractive and preferable for incoming students. However, we emphasize to set our goals and plan to increase enrollment in parallel steps such as proper information about the program, help in developing a required mathematics background, offering scholarships, teaching assistantship or internships and involving them in research. Also we need to make Physics programs more interesting with the interdisciplinary courses and other electives which students may like. We will have to work on the retention rate to maintain enrollment without compromising on standards. However, we still have to develop a complete understanding of the problem and keep looking for a better solution.

Abstract:We describe an undergraduate course where physics students are asked to conceive an outreach project of their own. The course alternates between the project conception and teachings about pedagogy and outreach, and ends in a public show. We describe its practical implementation and benefits. Through a student survey and an analysis of their projects, we discuss the merits and flaws of this "learning-by-doing" teaching approach for physics.

Abstract:In 2016, the Department of Physics at Oregon State University began a process to revise our Paradigms in Physics curriculum for physics majors. We began with a colloquium to inform the department of our plans and request their assistance, followed by a survey of students and faculty as well as individual interviews with the faculty teaching each course. As we developed a plan to address student- and faculty-identified challenges in the curriculum, we met with each faculty member individually to explain and refine our proposal, which was unanimously approved by the faculty. Major changes include major changes to several courses (math methods, computational physics, modern physics, electronics, and classical mechanics), including the introduction of two sophomore-year courses designed specifically to help prepare students for their upper-division courses.
