Abstract:Article is devoted to the study of the species composition of bottom trawls and fishing nets, the distribution and abundance of Russian sturgeon in the Caspian Sea in the area of responsibility of Russia. Seasonal studies were conducted in 2020–2022 in the northern and middle part of the sea at various depths. Bottom trawls and set nets were used as accounting fishing gear. Spring data on sturgeon were also collected from by-catch in small-mesh nets during migration of various populations of sea herring. The results of the study showed that in spring the Russian sturgeon is concentrated in the estuarine zone of freshwater channels and in shallow areas of the northern part of the sea. Most of the fish are caught in nets with a large mesh. The largest catches in 2020 and 2022 in the fishing nets amounted to 8; 10 copies. for one setting of networks. During the summer period, the distribution of the species retained its “attachment” to traditional feeding grounds. The main accumulations were observed on shoals, areas of bottom irregularities and in the confluence zone of river and sea waters in the northern part of the Caspian Sea. The average trawl catch in the northern shallow part of the sea varied from 0.21 to 0.48 copies/trawling, in the deep-water zone the indicator was higher and amounted to 2.0 copies/trawling in 2020 and 1.17; 1.25 copies/trawling in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The catches in the nets were higher than in the trawls and amounted to 14 and 18 copies/a network stop. In the middle part of the Caspian Sea off the western coast, the largest catch (11 copies/trawling) was recorded in 2022. Low catches in autumn are explained by the migration of sturgeon in the southern direction towards greater depths. It was found that in the 2020–2022 season, the share of Russian sturgeon reaches 95.43 (in trawls) and 88.0% (in netting). In spring, the species composition in the nets was mainly represented by sturgeon (88.1–89.4%). In summer, it accounted for 95.5% (in trawls) and 87.5% (in nets). The long-term seizure of large individuals by illegal fishing has led to a decrease in the number of adult fish in traditional feeding grounds.
