Abstract:This study was designed to estimate the burden of blindness and vision impairment in school children, and to determine the proportion of students meeting the visual acuity (VA) demand for their classrooms. From 148 primary and secondary school classrooms in Edo State, Nigeria, the habitual distance and near VA of over 2000 students were measured. Values obtained were compared with the calculated distance VA demand and actual near VA demand for their classrooms. Measures used to calculate the VA demand were working distance and smallest text size on learning materials, at both distance and near. We also determined the relationship between age and calculated VA demand and the effect of factors such as school ownership and school type on the VA demand. Habitual distance vision impairment was found in 0.8% of pupils, including 2 (0.10%) who met the WHO criteria for blindness. The average VA demand at the furthest and nearest sitting position to the board was 0.21 ± 0.23 and 0.65 ± 0.33LogMAR, respectively. Near working distance of students ranged from 15.00 to 37.20 cm, and the near VA demand as well as actual near VA demand (using a 2.5 times acuity reserve) was 0.60 ± 0.17 and 0.20 ± 1.7LogMAR, respectively. LogMAR VA demand increased (size of print decreases) with increasing age, at both distance (r = - 0.549, p = 0.070) and near (r = - 0.921, p < 0.0001). The VA demand at maximum distance and the actual near VA demand differed significantly by school ownership and between primary and secondary schools. Most students had VA better, but up to 11% of students per class had VA poorer than their classroom demands. Although the majority of students had better VA than their classroom demands, for students with reduced vision, learning could be negatively impacted. It is important to continually screen students for vision impairment and ensure prompt referral and treatment. These findings have implications for managing vision problems in children, as well as enabling appropriate classroom arrangements for those with vision impairment.
The Prevalence and Causes of Low Vision and Visual Impairment in School-Aged Children: The Shiraz Pediatric Eye Study

Abstract:Purpose: To determine the prevalence and causes of visual impairment (VI) in Shiraz schoolchildren aged between 6 and 12 years. Methods: In the present population-based study, stratified random sampling was used to select 2400 schoolchildren aged 6–12 years from all four educational districts of Shiraz, Iran. Using the definitions of the World Health Organization, VI was defined as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≤0.5 logMAR (20/60) in the better eye, and blindness as BCVA worse than 1.3 logMAR (20/400) in the better eye. The low vision was defined as BCVA equal to or worse than 0.5 logMAR (20/60) in either eye. Data were recorded from a detailed interview and ocular examination of each eligible student. Results: The mean age of the students was 9.1 ± 1.6 years. The prevalence of VI was 3/2001 (0.14%). The cause of VI in all these three patients (100%) was amblyopia due to high refractive errors (high ametropia and astigmatism). Regarding the main refractive errors leading to VI among these three patients, one patient had bilateral high hyperopia (compound hyperopic astigmatism), one of them had bilateral high astigmatism, and the other one had compound myopic astigmatism. According to a visual acuity of less than or equal to 20/60 in at least one eye, 9/2001 (0.4%) of children had low vision. Conclusions: This study revealed a low prevalence of VI in a sample of 6- to 12-year-old school-aged children. Amblyopia in the setting of high ametropia and astigmatism were the most common causes of VI.

Abstract:Journal of Visual Impairment &Blindness, Volume 118, Issue 5, Page 349-360, September–October 2024. Introduction: Surveys conducted in schools for blind students have become useful alternatives to population-based surveys in generating data on childhood blindness and low vision. This survey determined the prevalence of low vision, causes of visual impairment, and the proportion of students requiring low vision devices and provided the low vision devices required. Methods: The study was conducted in three schools for blind students in two states of north-central Nigeria. The standard examination protocol of the World Health Organization's Prevention of Blindness and Low Vision for Children (WHO, 2005) was used to interview and assess participants. The causes of visual impairment were categorized using the definitions in the coding instruments (WHO, 1988). Results: The study examined 170 eyes of 85 students between 7 and 49 years of age with a male-to-female ratio of 1.4:1. Of the 83 (97.6%) students with visual impairments, 59 (69.4%) of them had low vision. The major anatomical sites of vision loss by eyes were the whole globe (n = 84, 55.3%), followed by the lens (n = 23, 15.1%) and the retina (n = 21, 13.8%). Overall, the leading causes of visual impairment in eyes were glaucoma (n = 52, 34.2%), retinitis pigmentosa (n = 21, 13.8%), phthisis bulbi (n = 16, 10.5%), cataract (n = 14, 9.2%), and keratoconus (n = 10, 6.6%). A total of 37 (43.5%) students were prescribed optical low vision devices, and 28 (32.9%) received nonoptical low vision devices. Discussion: A large number of the students in this study had low vision. They were prescribed and provided the low vision devices required. The causes of visual impairment were a mix of the patterns seen in both developing and developed countries. The finding of glaucoma as a more important cause of vision loss calls for improved efforts in screening, early detection, and treatment of glaucoma among children. Implications for Practitioners: Routine comprehensive visual assessment, refraction, and low vision assessment before enrollment will guard against improper school placements and enhance optimization of vision for those with low vision.

Abstract:Background Visual impairment (VI) is a decreased ability to see things which is critical problem for health professionals and students to whom normal vision is essential for their daily activity. If it is not timely managed, visual impairment leads to physical, psychological, and socio-economic malfunctions to the victims and nation. Despite the above impacts, currently there is no study in Ethiopia on this topic. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of visual impairment and its associated factors among Medical and Health Science students at the University of Gondar. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to March 2020 among Medical and Health Science students. After recruiting study participants using systematic random sampling technique, we applied pre-tested self-administered questionnaire for sociodemographic variables and also visual acuity measurement was performed using Snellen chart placed at a distance of 6 meters. Visual acuity tested separately for each eye and for both eyes in a well- illuminated area. Pinhole was used for those participants with a visual acuity of < 6/9. Participants with a presenting visual acuity of < 6/12 in the better eye were diagnosed as having visual impairment. Epi data version 3.1 and stata version 14 were used for data entry and statistical analysis, respectively. Binary logistic regression was used, and the Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with the 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was reported to declare the statistical significance and strength of association between VI and independent variables. Results A total of 654 students were screened for visual acuity. The prevalence of visual impairment was 12.5% (95% CI: 10.21, 15.31). Age above 25 years (AOR = 1.8; 95% CI: 1.02, 3.26) and current alcohol drinking (AOR = 2.9; 95% CI: 1.7, 5.00), were statistically significant factors of visual impairment. Conclusion The prevalence of visual impairment among medical and health science students was high. Age of study participant and current alcohol consumption were statically significant factors. This study warrants the routine screening of Medical and Health science students for visual impairment.

Prevalence and causes of monocular childhood blindness in a rural population in southern India

Abstract:Purpose: To determine the prevalence and etiology of childhood monocular blindness in a rural population in southern India. Methods: A total of 14,423 children younger than 15 years in randomly selected villages (8,222 households) with a total population of 40,336 were screened. Screening was performed in two stages. In the first stage, all children with visual acuity worse than 6/18 in at least one eye were screened. Subsequently, children with visual acuity worse than 3/60 in one eye were referred to a tertiary care hospital for further examination for determination of the cause of visual impairment. Results: The age range of affected children was 1 to 15 years (median age: 12 years). Fifteen children had monocular visual impairment, yielding a prevalence rate of 1.13 in 1,000 children. Refractive error leading to amblyopia was the most common cause of monocular visual impairment, followed by trauma, congenital disorders, and vitamin A deficiency. One case had toxoplasmosis. Approximately one-third of the children were born of a consanguineous marriage (30.06%). The proportion of first-degree consanguinity (46.4%) was higher than that of second-degree (37.5%) or third-degree (16.1%) consanguinity. Conclusion: The prevalence of childhood monocular blindness was high in the current study, but most causes were preventable or treatable. Improved screening methods (especially for refractive errors), genetic counseling, and therapeutic interventions can reduce the burden of childhood blindness.
Visual Impairment at Presentation in Pediatric Uveitis: A Multicentric Study in 477 Children Across Southern and Eastern India

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate visual impairment (VI) at presentation in pediatric uveitis cases in southern and eastern India. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 477 children across four tertiary centers (2015-2020). Best-documented visual acuity (ETDRS letters) in the better eye was used to categorize VI. Results: Mean age at presentation was 11 ± 3.7 years; 43.8% were females, and 64.8% bilateral. Of 205 patients with complete investigations, 32.7% were undifferentiated uveitis, 31.7% infectious, 25.7% juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis, and 10.2% other non-infectious uveitis. At presentation, 79.0% had none to mild VI, 12.6% moderate VI, and 8.4% severe VI to blindness. On generalized estimating equations analysis for individual eyes, prior oral steroids and older age were risk factors, while female gender, prior topical corticosteroids and immunosuppressive therapy were protective against moderate and/or severe VI. Conclusions: Over a fifth of pediatric uveitis cases present with moderate/severe VI, especially in older age or with prior oral corticosteroid therapy.

Abstract:AbstractDiabetes and blindness are important health issues globally; we determined the prevalence of blindness, diabetic retinopathy, and other eye diseases in Nigerian-type 2 diabetics. A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on consenting type 2 diabetic patients who had scheduled comprehensive eye examination including dilated funduscopy with +78DS. Visual status was graded using the WHO criteria. Approval from Institutional Ethics Committee was obtained. Primary outcome measures were the prevalence and causes of blindness as well as prevalence of diabetic retinopathy. Secondary outcome measures were the presence of other eye diseases. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 13. Two hundred and sixty-six eyes of 133 type 2 diabetic patients aged 22–89 years were studied; 69 (51.9 %) were males while 64 (48.1 %) were females. Five (3.8 %) patients were blind while 27 (20.3 %) were visually impaired. Cataract was the leading cause of blindness (60 %) and visual impairment was found in 59.3 %. Diabetic retinopathy was present in 37 (27.8 %) diabetic patients of which 5 (3.8 %) were proliferative. Diabetic macular edema was present in 31 (23.3 %) patients. Severe visual impairment and blindness were commoner in those with diabetic retinopathy. Refractive error 67 (25.2 %), cataract 63 (23.7 %), and chronic glaucoma 44 (16.5 %) were the most prevalent non-diabetic retinopathy eye diseases. High prevalence of blindness, diabetic retinopathy, and other diseases are seen in type 2 diabetics. Health education, early diagnosis as well as treatment of diabetic retinopathy and other diseases will largely alleviate these ocular morbidities.

Abstract:Objective To determine the causes of severe visual impairment and blindness (SVI/BL) among students in a school for the blind in Shanghai with a view to promote the control of childhood blindness and low vision.Methods A cross-sectional investigation of 163 students was conducted in April 2010.The data were included in the self-designed survey form from World Health Organization/Prevention of Blindness (WHO/PBL) eye examination record system,which includes classifications and etiological categories for visual impairment and blindness,and classifications of the affected anatomic sites of the eye involved in visual impairment and blindness.Distance uncorrected and corrected visual acuity were measured.Autorefraction and subjective refraction were performed if needed.The anterior segment was examined using a handheld slit lamp.The posterior segment was examined by ophthalmoscopy.Number were counted and measured with percentage.Results Of the 163 students,19.6％ were severe visual impairment,54.6％ were blindness,21.5％ had moderate visual impairment and 4.3％ were mildly impaired.The leading etiological causes of SVI/BL were congenital and hereditary factors (37.2％).The anatomical site for SVI/BL was the retina in 41.3％ of the students.The main disease causing SVI/BL was retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (18.2％).Blinding disease was considered as "avoidable" in 64 studnets (52.9％),of which 29 cases (24.0％) were preventable,and 35 cases (28.9％) were treatable.The main treatable disease in moderate visual impairment was congenital cataract (15 cases,42.9％).Conclusion The pattern of childhood blindness in Shanghai is similar to that seen in other developed countries.It is recommended to move more quickly to establish a reliable ROP screening and treatment network,and vigorously promote low vision rehabilitation.

Abstract:Children with special needs are at a higher risk of visual impairment as compared to normal population. Majority of the ocular disorders they suffer, like refractive errors and strabismus, are treatable. This study was aimed to assess the level of utilization of eye care services among children and teens with special needs in selected schools in Imo State, Nigeria. An interviewer-administered semi-structured questionnaire prepared was administered to children and adolescents with special needs, attending three special schools in Imo state, Nigeria. Findings from 185 respondents revealed that 43.2% never utilized eye care services, 13.5% had utilized same in the past. Socio-demographic factors identified as barriers to accessing eye care included parental misconceptions, stigmatization, poverty, ignorance, poor state healthcare facility, and physical inaccessibility. This study demonstrated that the rate of utilization of eye care services among the studied population is suboptimal. Children with special needs have little consideration in accessing proper eye care system. Early ophthalmic intervention by an eye care team at the point of enrolment into schools and establishment of ophthalmic units in special schools to provide periodic eye examination and proper management of ocular disorders are thus recommended.
Poverty and Blindness in Nigeria: Results from the National Survey of Blindness and Visual Impairment

Abstract:Purpose: Poverty can be a cause and consequence of blindness. Some causes only affect the poorest communities (e.g. trachoma), and poor individuals are less likely to access services. In low income countries, cataract blind adults have been shown to be less economically active, indicating that blindness can exacerbate poverty. This study aims to explore associations between poverty and blindness using national survey data from Nigeria. Methods: Participants ≥40 years were examined in 305 clusters (2005-2007). Sociodemographic information, including literacy and occupation, was obtained by interview. Presenting visual acuity (PVA) was assessed using a reduced tumbling E LogMAR chart. Full ocular examination was undertaken by experienced ophthalmologists on all with PVA <6/12 in either eye. Causes of vision loss were determined using World Health Organization guidelines. Households were categorized into three levels of poverty based on literacy and occupation at household level. Results: A total of 569/13,591 participants were blind (PVA <3/60, better eye; prevalence 4.2%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.8-4.6%). Prevalences of blindness were 8.5% (95% CI 7.7-9.5%), 2.5% (95% CI 2.0-3.1%), and 1.5% (95% CI 1.2-2.0%) in poorest, medium and affluent households, respectively (p = 0.001). Cause-specific prevalences of blindness from cataract, glaucoma, uncorrected aphakia and corneal opacities were significantly higher in poorer households. Cataract surgical coverage was low (37.2%), being lowest in females in poor households (25.3%). Spectacle coverage was 3 times lower in poor than affluent households (2.4% vs. 7.5%). Conclusion: In Nigeria, blindness is associated with poverty, in part reflecting lower access to services. Reducing avoidable causes will not be achieved unless access to services improves, particularly for the poor and women.
Cross-sectional study of prevalence, causes and trends in visual impairment in Nirmal District, Telangana, India: Nirmal Eye Evaluation for Trends study

Abstract:Objective To determine the prevalence, causes and risk factors associated with visual impairment (VI) in the Nirmal district of Telangana, India, using extended Rapid Assessment of Visual Impairment (RAVI) methodology. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Community setting. Participants Participants aged ≥16 years were enumerated from 90 randomly selected clusters and 4629/5400 (85.7%) participants were examined. Presenting visual acuity (VA) was assessed using a Snellen chart with E optotypes at a 6 m distance. Near vision was assessed binocularly using an N notation chart with tumbling E optotypes at a 40 cm distance. An anterior segment examination done followed by distance direct ophthalmoscopy at 50 cm. Non-mydriatic fundus images were obtained. VI was defined as presenting VA worse than 6/12 in the better eye. The prevalence of VI in the current study was compared with a RAVI study conducted in 2014 to assess the trends in VI among those aged ≥40 years. Primary outcome Prevalence, causes and risk factors for VI. Results Among those examined, 55% were women, 53% had at least school-level education, 2.3% self-reported diabetes and 8.7% self-reported hypertension. The prevalence of VI was 8.81% (95% CI 8.01% to 9.67%). Overall, uncorrected refractive errors (49.5%) were the leading cause of VI, followed by cataracts (40.2%) and posterior segment diseases (4.9%). Among those aged ≥40 years, the prevalence of VI declined by 19.3% compared with the 2014 baseline study (from 20.2% to 16.3%; p<0.01). Conclusion The extended RAVI study conducted in the Nirmal district showed a considerable decline in the prevalence of VI. Targeted interventions are needed to provide adequate eye care for the high-risk groups in this district.

Age-Matched Comparative Analysis of Binocular Vision Anomalies among Children with Dyslexia in Northern Nigeria

Abstract:Background: Dyslexia, a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting reading skills, poses significant challenges to children's academic performance and quality of life. Despite its rising prevalence and adverse effects, understanding of its relationship with vision anomalies remains limited, particularly in low-resource settings like Nigeria. This study aims to assess the prevalence of binocular vision anomalies (BVAs) among children with and without dyslexia in Kano, Nigeria. Methods: This is a hospital-based, cross-sectional, matched-paired, controlled study conducted at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Eye Clinic in Northern Nigeria. The study included school children who visited the AKTH Eye Clinic from January 2018 to December 2022. Visual acuity tests, external eye examinations and accommodative, binocular vision and oculomotor skills tests were conducted. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests and Fisher's exact tests were conducted, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Results: Forty-four children aged 12 ± 2 years participated. Children with dyslexia reported higher rates of visual symptoms than those without dyslexia, Blurring vision, visual distortion and eye strain were the most prevalent (p < 0.05) BV symptoms. Accommodative insufficiency), was the most common visual abnormality, and was significantly higher in children with dyslexia than those without dyslexia (45.5% vs. 18.2%). However, other visual anomalies showed no significant difference between groups. There was a high prevalence of binocular vision anomalies in both groups. Binocular test findings showed dyslexic children had significantly lower distance positive fusional vergence recovery values (p = 0.005). All cases of convergence insufficiency alone were found in the non-dyslexic group. Conclusions: The study found that children with dyslexia residing in Northern Nigeria demonstrated higher rates of visual symptoms, more accommodative insufficiency and lower distance positive fusional vergence recovery values compared to their non-dyslexic counterparts.

Abstract:Introduction: Previous studies have reported a high prevalence of visual defects in children with special needs. However, routine ocular examinations for these children in rural areas of China are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the status of visual impairment (VI) in children at special education schools in rural China. Methods: A total of 316 students from two special schools in Zunyi city, Guizhou province, were enrolled. Full ophthalmic examinations were performed, and gene-sequencing services were offered to potential patients. Results: The mean age of the 316 participants was 12.27 ± 3.49 years and 75 showed abnormal ophthalmic manifestations on slit-lamp examination. Visual acuity (VA) was assessed in 232 eyes, and the mean VA (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution, logMAR) was 0.27 ± 0.34. Whole-exome sequencing identified 19 mutations in these children, which might explain their visual complaints. Children with Down syndrome had a significantly higher prevalence of ocular disorders than those without. Conclusion: VI is common among children at special education schools in rural areas; however, routine screening and effective interventions have not been consistently implemented. Efforts should be made to address this issue in these already disadvantaged children.

Abstract:PurposeTo determine the prevalence of visual impairment and blindness in underserved Iranian villages and to identify the most common cause of visual impairment and blindness.Patients and methodsMultistage cluster sampling was used to select the participants who were then invited to undergo complete examinations. Optometric examinations including visual acuity, and refraction were performed for all individuals. Ophthalmic examinations included slit-lamp biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy. Visual impairment was determined according to the definitions of the WHO and presenting vision.ResultsOf 3851 selected individuals, 3314 (86.5%) participated in the study. After using the exclusion criteria, the present report was prepared based on the data of 3095 participants. The mean age of the participants was 37.6±20.7 years (3–93 years). The prevalence of visual impairment and blindness was 6.43% (95% confidence interval (CI): 3.71–9.14) and 1.18% (95% CI: 0.56–1.79), respectively. The prevalence of visual impairment varied from 0.75% in participants aged less than 5 years to 38.36% in individuals above the age of 70 years. Uncorrected refractive errors and cataract were the first and second leading causes of visual impairment; moreover, cataract and refractive errors were responsible for 35.90 and 20.51% of the cases of blindness, respectively.ConclusionThe prevalence of visual impairment was markedly high in this study. Lack of access to health services was the main reason for the high prevalence of visual impairment in this study. Cataract and refractive errors are responsible for 80% of visual impairments which can be due to poverty in underserved villages.

Uncorrected refractive errors in Senegalese school‐aged children

Abstract:Aims/Purpose: To assess the visual health and the prevalence of visual impairment (VI) due to uncorrected refractive errors, the most common cause of VI in developing countries, in Senegalese school‐aged children. Methods: Through the campaign carried out by the Spanish NGO “Azul en Acción” in Senegal (Africa), a total of 235 children aged 6–14 years from four schools were examined. Ocular abnormalities and uncorrected distance visual acuity (VA) were analysed and VI was defined as presenting visual acuity worse than 0.3 logMAR in any of the eyes (Bourne et al. 2022). In children with VA worse than 0.3 logMAR, refractive error was measuring by retinoscopy and subjective refraction and defined using spherical equivalents (SE). Results: A total of 235 Senegalese children aged from 6 to 14 years (mean ± SD, 8.7 ± 2.4 years‐old) were examined. Of them, 15.3% of the children ( N = 46) were affected of VI, most of them due to uncorrected refractive errors, easily resolved with spectacles ( N = 37, 76.9%). The mean value of SE was +0.42 ± 1.18 D, with myopia as the least frequent ametropia ( N = 13, 29.7%). Only 9 VI‐children did not improve the VA with optical prescription and were referred to hospital for a whole ocular examination. Conclusions: The prevalence of VI in Senegalese children is very low, as well as the incidence of infant myopia compared to developed countries (Sankaridurg et al., 2021). However, little was known about visual health in Senegalese children and this results confirm the need for early eye care practitioner interventions in developing countries to prevent and treat VI due to uncorrected refractive errors. Abstract:Aim: To report on the distribution of eye diseases, aetiologies of severe visual impairment/blindness (SVI/BL) and unmet eye care needs of the Syrian refugee population and the Lebanese host community. Methods: This retrospective study analysed the data of patients that were examined during the Ayounkon project -an eye health care project offering medical and surgical treatment for Syrian refugees and Lebanese host community in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. The project took place in three different primary health care centres and involved cooperation between several NGOs and ophthalmologists working on a voluntary basis. Data was analysed for distribution of eye diseases and aetiologies responsible for monocular and binocular SVI/BL. Results: A total of 2067 patients were included, 677 were children < 18 years. The most frequent pathologies were ocular allergy (10%), and cataract (7.4%). 158 patients (7.6%) were referred for surgery. Glasses were prescribed for 1103 patients (53.4%), of whom 242 (21.9%) were children of school age. SVI/BL was found in 276 patients (13%). The condition was bilateral in 116 patients (42%). SVI/BL was significantly more frequent in the Syrian population than in the Lebanese (186 patients, 14.8% versus 86 patients, 11.3%; p = 0.04). The main causes for SVI/BL were cataract, keratoconus/corneal decompensation and amblyopia. Conclusion: The Syrian refugee population and the Lebanese host community have a high prevalence of ophthalmic pathologies and SVI/BL. Visual impairment is more prevalent in the refugee population. Our findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions and access to eye care services for these populations.
Population-based assessment of prevalence and causes of visual impairment in the state of Telangana, India: a cross-sectional study using the Rapid Assessment of Visual Impairment (RAVI) methodology

Abstract:Objective To assess the prevalence and causes of visual impairment (VI) among a rural population aged 40 years and older in the state of Telangana in India. Design Population-based cross-sectional study. Setting Districts of Adilabad and Mahbubnagar in south Indian state of Telangana, India. Participants A sample of 6150 people was selected using cluster random sampling methodology. A team comprising a trained vision technician and a field worker visited the households and conducted the eye examination. Presenting, pinhole and aided visual acuity were assessed. Anterior segment was examined using a torchlight. Lens was examined using distant direct ophthalmoscopy in a semidark room. In all, 5881 (95.6%) participants were examined from 123 study clusters. Among those examined, 2723 (46.3%) were men, 4824 (82%) had no education, 2974 (50.6%) were from Adilabad district and 1694 (28.8%) of them were using spectacles at the time of eye examination. Primary outcome measure VI was defined as presenting visual acuity <6/18 in the better eye and it included moderate VI (<6/18 to 6/60) and blindness (<6/60). Results The age-adjusted and gender-adjusted prevalence of VI was 15.0% (95% CI 14.1% to 15.9%). On applying binary logistic regression analysis, VI was associated with older age groups. The odds of having VI were higher among women (OR 1.2; 95% CI 1.0 to 1.4). Having any education (OR 0.4; 95% CI 0.3 to 0.6) and current use of glasses (OR 0.19; 95% CI 0.1 to 0.2) were protective. VI was also higher in Mahbubnagar (OR 1.0 to 1.5) district. Cataract (54.7%) was the leading cause of VI followed by uncorrected refractive errors (38.6%). Conclusions VI continues to remain a challenge in rural Telangana. As over 90% of the VI is avoidable, massive eye care programmes are required to address the burden of VI in Telangana.

Abstract:Purpose: To estimate the magnitude, determinants, and causes of visual impairment (VI) and blindness among people >40 years. Methods: In this cross-sectional survey, 2,968 people >40 years from 34 clusters were examined. A cluster random sampling method with a compact segment sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Prevalence of any VI (presenting visual acuity (PVA) <6/12 in better eye), severe VI (PVA <6/60 – 3/60), and blindness (PVA <3/60 in better eye) were expressed as percentage with 95% confidence interval. Logistic regression was performed to determine the risk factors associated with blindness. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of the participants was 54.6 years (Standard deviation ± 11.2 years). The prevalence of mild, moderate, and severe visual impairment was 14.2% (12.95–15.49), 13.7% (12.46–14.97), and 0.7% (0.47–1.12), respectively. The prevalence of blindness was 1.3% (0.94–1.79, n = 39). The overall prevalence of VI (presenting Visual Acuity 70 years, and OR 7.6 (95% CI: 2.2–26.5) for people aged between 60 and 69 years compared to those aged 41–50 years and people living near coastal regions (Within 50 km of coast) (OR: 3.9, 95% CI: 1.6–7.3). Conclusion: Blindness and vision impairment are of public health concern in this geographic region. Eye care services need to be augmented to address this challenge.

Visual Status of Patients with Retinitis Pigmentosa: A Multicenter Study

Abstract:Aim: To determine the degree of visual loss associated with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in Nigerians at first ophthalmic clinic presentation Methodology: Multicenter, prospective, cross-sectional study in four collaborating retina clinics within Nigeria between January and December 2018. The primary outcome measure was the World Health Organization’s visual status classification at presentation. Clinical examination, including a Snellen’s visual acuity, refraction, anterior segment examination using a slit lamp biomicroscope, and dilated fundus examination using a +90D or +78D, was done in all consecutive RP patients. We analyzed the data using SPSS (version 22), P < 0.05. Results: Of 8614 patients seen within the study period, fiftyfour eyes of 27 patients diagnosed to have RP with a mean age of 44.1years ± 17.6 years (ranging between 5–73 years) constituted the study population. Eighteen (66.7%) were males and 9 (33.3%) females. The hospital-based prevalence of RP was 0.31%. Ten patients (37.0%) presented with myopia. RP was bilateral in all cases and non-syndromic. Bilateral low vision and blindness were noted in 44.4% and 22.2% of patients respectively. Conclusion: About a quarter of patients with RP presenting to the retina clinics would have some degree of visual morbidity. Educating eye care providers and patients about the disease would improve understanding, encourage early clinic visits, manage visual morbidity and enhance rehabilitation when necessary.
Prevalence of Visual Impairment Among Students Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Findings From 1,057,061 Individuals in Guangzhou, Southern China

Abstract:Background Visual impairment (VI) is a growing public health concern among students as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective This study investigated the change in VI before and during the pandemic among students. Methods Data on 547,864 and 497,371 students were obtained from the Guangzhou Survey on Students' Constitution and Health (GSSCH) collected in October 2019 and October 2020, respectively. VI was defined as the unaided distance visual acuity lower than 20/25 Snellen equivalent (LogMAR 0.10) in the worse eye. Change in VI based on age and sociodemographic variables were evaluated by chi-square test for trend as appropriate. Comparisons of different categorical variables were tested by contingency tables-based chi-square test . We have further analysis of the students who went through both of the 2019 and 2020 examinations for evaluating the VI incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results More than 1,045,235 students were involved in our study, among whom 271,790 (54.65%) out of 497,371 students in Guangzhou suffered from VI during the COVID-19 compared with 293,001(53.48%) visually impaired students (total tested participants = 547,864) before the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, the overall prevalence of VI actually showed an increased age tendency and reached the highest level in the 17 [80.04%, 95%Confidence interval (CI):79.53 to 80.54%] and the 18 (79.64, 95%CI: 79.06 to 80.23%) age groups. Rapid growth was detected among students aged between 9 and 16 years old (raised by 46.21) while older students were more likely to get moderate and severe VI than younger ones. Students involved in more screen-based activities [(64.83%, 2019); (66.59%, 2020)] appeared to have a higher prevalence of VI than those involved in less [(49.17%, 2019); (49.26%, 2020)]. Conclusion A rising trend of VI among students was detected before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the pandemic appeared to be associated with a rapid VI shift in younger and boy populations. Potential danger may arise when public health emergencies occur in the school, and more effort should be made to improve students' vision.
