Abstract:ABSTRACT Over the past year, JWST has uncovered galaxies at record-breaking distances up to z ∼ 13. The JWST UNCOVER (ultra-deep NIRSpec and NIRcam observations before the epoch of reionization) program has obtained ultra-deep multiwavelength NIRCam imaging of the massive galaxy cluster A2744 over ∼45 arcmin2 down to ∼29.5 AB mag. Here, we present a robust ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function derived through lensing clusters at 9 < z < 12. Using comprehensive end-to-end simulations, we account for all lensing effects and systematic uncertainties in deriving both the amplification factors and the effective survey volume. Our results confirm the intriguing excess of UV-bright galaxies (MUV <−20 AB mag) previously reported at z > 9 in recent JWST studies. In particular, a double power-law (DPL) describes better the bright end of the luminosity function compared to the classical Schechter form. The number density of these bright galaxies is 10–100 times larger than theoretical predictions and previous findings based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. Additionally, we measure a star formation rate density of ρSFR = 10−2.64 M⊙ yr−1 Mpc−3 at these redshifts, which is 4–10 times higher than galaxy formation models that assume a constant star formation efficiency. Future wide-area surveys and accurate modelling of lensing-assisted observations will reliably constrain both the bright and the dim end of the UV luminosity function at z > 9, which will provide key benchmarks for galaxy formation models.

Reionization after JWST: a photon budget crisis?

Abstract:New James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations are revealing the first galaxies to be prolific producers of ionizing photons, which we argue gives rise to a tension between different probes of reionization. Over the last two decades a consensus has emerged where star-forming galaxies are able to generate enough photons to drive reionization, given reasonable values for their number densities, ionizing efficiencies $\xi_{\rm ion}$ (per unit UV luminosity), and escape fractions $f_{\rm esc}$. However, some new JWST observations infer high values of $\xi_{\rm ion}$ during reionization and an enhanced abundance of earlier ($z\gtrsim 9$) galaxies, dramatically increasing the number of ionizing photons produced at high $z$. Simultaneously, recent low-$z$ studies predict significant escape fractions for faint reionization-era galaxies. Put together, we show that the galaxies we have directly observed ($M_{\rm UV} < -15$) not only can drive reionization, but would end it too early. That is, our current galaxy observations, taken at face value, imply an excess of ionizing photons and thus a process of reionization in tension with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. Considering galaxies down to $M_{\rm UV}\approx -11$, below current observational limits, only worsens this tension. We discuss possible avenues to resolve this photon budget crisis, including systematics in either theory or observations.

Abstract:With its sensitivity in the rest-frame optical, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has uncovered active galactic nuclei (AGN), comprising both intrinsically faint and heavily reddened sources, well into the first billion years of the Universe, at $z \sim 4-11$. In this work, we revisit the AGN contribution to reionization given the high number densities associated with these objects. We use the DELPHI semi-analytic model, base-lined against the latest high-redshift datasets from the JWST and the Atacama Large millimetre Array (ALMA) to model early star forming galaxies and AGN. We calculate the escape fractions of ionizing radiation from both star formation and AGN and include the impact of reionization feeback in suppressing the baryonic content of low-mass galaxies in ionized regions. This model is validated against the key observables for star forming galaxy, AGN and reionization. In our {\it fiducial} model, reionization reaches its mid-point at $z \sim 6.9$ and ends by $z \sim 5.9$. Low stellar mass ($M_*\leq 10^9M_\odot$) star forming galaxies are found to be the key drivers of the reionization process, providing about $77\%$ of the total photon budget. Despite their high numbers, high accretion rates and higher escape fractions compared to star forming galaxies at $z \sim 5$, AGN only provide about $23\%$ of the total reionization budget which is dominated by black holes in high stellar mass systems (with $M_* \geq 10^9M_\odot$). This is because AGN number densities become relevant only at $z \leq 7$ - as a result, AGN contribute as much as galaxies as late as $z \sim 6.2$, when reionization is already in its end stages. Finally, we find that even contrasting models of the AGN ionizing photon escape fraction (increasing or decreasing with stellar mass) do not qualitatively change our results.

Abstract:We present NIRSpec/micro-shutter assembly observations from the JWST large-area survey WIDE, targeting the rest-frame UV–optical spectrum of Ulema, a radio-active galactic nucleus host at redshift . The low-resolution prism spectrum displays high equivalent width nebular emission, with remarkably high ratios of low-ionization species of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur, relative to hydrogen; auroral O emission is clearly detected, possibly also C . From the high-resolution grating spectrum, we measure a gas velocity dispersion of , broad enough to rule out star-forming gas in equilibrium in the gravitational potential of the galaxy. Diagnostics based on emission-line ratios suggest that the nebular emission is due to a shock which ran out of pre-shock gas. To infer the physical properties of the system, we model simultaneously the galaxy spectral energy distribution and shock-driven line emission under a Bayesian framework. We find a relatively low-mass, star-forming system ( , ), where shock-driven emission contributes 50 per cent to the total H β luminosity. The nebular metallicity is near solar – three times higher than that predicted by the mass–metallicity relation at , possibly related to fast-paced chemical evolution near the galaxy nucleus. We find no evidence for a recent decline in the star-formation rate of the galaxy, meaning that, already at this early epoch, fast radio-mode active galactic nucleus feedback was poorly coupled with the bulk of the star-forming gas; therefore, most of the feedback energy must end up in the galaxy halo, setting the stage for future quenching.

The Cosmic Timeline Implied by the JWST Reionization Crisis

Abstract:JWST's discovery of well-formed galaxies and supermassive black holes only a few hundred Myr after the big bang, and the identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at $z=6.71$, seriously challenge the timeline predicted by Lambda CDM. Moreover, the implied bright UV-irradiation of the early Universe suggests a reionization history much too short to comply with the observed evolution of the hydrogen ionization fraction, $x_ HII (z)$. A recent analysis of reionization after JWST by Munoz:2024 has concluded that the Lambda CDM timeline simply cannot accommodate the combined JWST- Planck observations even if exotic fixes are introduced to modify the standard reionization model. In this paper, we argue that this so-called `photon budget crisis' is more likely due to flaws in the cosmological model itself. We aim to re-analyze the data in the context of established astrophysics with $R_ h =ct$ as the background cosmology, an approach that has already been shown to mitigate the tension created by the too-early appearance of galaxies, quasars and PAHs. We employ the standard reionization model using the JWST-measured UV luminosity function in the early Universe and the timeline and physical conditions in both Lambda CDM and $R_ h =ct$. The former has already been fully probed and discussed by Munoz:2024 and we here merely redo the calculation to ensure consistency with their pioneering work. We then contrast the predicted reionization histories in these two scenarios and compare them with the data. We confirm that the reionization history predicted by Lambda CDM is in significant tension with the observations, and demonstrate that the latter are instead in excellent agreement with the $R_ h =ct$ timeline. Together, the four anomalies uncovered by JWST, including the newly discovered reionization `crisis' discussed in this paper, provide strong evidence against the timeline predicted by Lambda CDM and in favor of the evolutionary history in $R_ h =ct$.

Abstract:In the current JWST era, rest-frame UV spectra play a crucial role in enhancing our understanding of the interstellar medium (ISM) and stellar properties of the first galaxies in the epoch of reionization (z > 6). Here, we compare well-known and reliable optical diagrams sensitive to the main ionization source (i.e., star formation, SF; active galactic nuclei, AGN; and shocks) to UV counterparts proposed in the literature—the so-called "UV–BPT diagrams"—using the HST COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY), which is the largest high-quality, high-resolution, and broad-wavelength range atlas of far-UV spectra for 45 local star-forming galaxies. In particular, we explore where CLASSY UV line ratios are located in the different UV diagnostic plots, taking into account state-of-the-art photoionization and shock models, and, for the first time, the measured ISM and stellar properties (e.g., gas-phase metallicity, ionization parameter, carbon abundance, and stellar age). We find that the combination of C iii] λ λ1907,9 He ii λ1640 and O iii] λ1666 can be a powerful tool to separate between SF, shocks, and AGN at subsolar metallicities. We also confirm that alternative diagrams without O iii] λ1666 still allow us to define an SF-locus, with some caveats. Diagrams including C iv λ λ1548,51 should be taken with caution given the complexity of this doublet profile. Finally, we present a discussion detailing the ISM conditions required to detect UV emission lines, visible only in low gas-phase metallicity (12 + log(O/H) ≲ 8.3) and high ionization parameter (log(U) ≳ −2.5) environments. Overall, CLASSY and our UV toolkit will be crucial in interpreting the spectra of the earliest galaxies that JWST is currently revealing.

Abstract:JWST is producing high-quality rest-frame optical and UV spectra of faint galaxies at $z>4$ for the first time, challenging models of galaxy and stellar populations. One galaxy recently observed at $z=5.943$, GS9422, has nebular line and UV continuum emission that appears to require a high ionizing photon production efficiency. This has been explained with an exotic stellar initial mass function (IMF), 10-30x more top-heavy than a Salpeter IMF (Cameron et al. 2023). Here we suggest an alternate explanation to this exotic IMF. We use a new flexible neural net emulator for CLOUDY, Cue, to infer the shape of the ionizing spectrum directly from the observed emission line fluxes. By describing the ionizing spectrum with a piece-wise power-law, Cue is agnostic to the source of the ionizing photons. Cue finds that the ionizing radiation from GS9422 can be approximated by a double power law characterized by $\frac{Q_\mathrm{HeII}}{Q_\mathrm{H}} = -1.5$, which can be interpreted as a combination of young, metal-poor stars and a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) with $F_{\nu} \propto \lambda ^ {2}$ in a 65%/35% ratio. This suggests a significantly lower nebular continuum contribution to the observed UV flux (24%) than a top-heavy IMF ($\gtrsim80$%), and hence, necessitates a damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorber (DLA) to explain the continuum turnover bluewards of $\sim1400$ Angstrom. While current data cannot rule out either scenario, given the immense impact the proposed top-heavy IMF would have on models of galaxy formation, it is important to propose viable alternative explanations and to further investigate the nature of peculiar high-z nebular emitters.

Cosmic Reionization in the JWST Era: Back to AGNs?

Abstract:Deep surveys with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have revealed an emergent population of moderate-luminosity, broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at 4< z< 14 powered by accretion onto early massive black holes. The high number densities reported, together with the large Lyman-continuum (LyC) production efficiency and leakiness into the intergalactic medium (IGM) that are typical of UV-selected AGNs, lead us to reassess a scenario where AGNs are the sole drivers of the cosmic hydrogen/helium reionization process. Our approach is based on the assumptions, grounded in recent observations, that: (a) the fraction of broad-line AGNs among galaxies is around 10-15%; (b) the mean escape fraction of hydrogen LyC radiation is high, >80%, in AGN hosts and is negligible otherwise; and (c) internal absorption at 4 ryd or a steep ionizing EUV spectrum delay full reionization of HeII until z~2.8-3.0, in agreement with observations of the HeII Lyman-alpha forest. In our fiducial models: 1) hydrogen reionization is 99% completed by redshift z~5.3-5.5, and reaches its midpoint at z~6.5-6.7; (2) the integrated Thomson scattering optical depth to reionization is ~0.05, consistent with constraints from cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy data; and (3) the abundant AGN population detected by JWST does not violate constraints on the unresolved X-ray background.

Deciphering the JWST spectrum of a 'little red dot' at $z \sim 4.53$: An obscured AGN and its star-forming host

Abstract:JWST has revealed a class of numerous, extremely compact sources, with rest-frame red optical/near-infrared (NIR) and blue ultraviolet (UV) colours, nicknamed "little red dots". We present one of the highest signal-to-noise ratio JWST NIRSpec/PRISM spectra of a little red dot, J0647_1045 at $z = 4.5321 \pm 0.0001$, and examine its NIRCam morphology, to differentiate the origin of the UV and optical/NIR emission, and elucidate the nature of the little red dot phenomenon. J0647_1045 is unresolved ($r_e < 0.17$ kpc) in the three NIRCam long-wavelength filters, but significantly extended ($r_e = 0.45 \pm 0.06$ kpc) in the three short-wavelength filters, indicating a red compact source in a blue star-forming galaxy. The spectral continuum shows a clear change in slope, from blue in the optical/UV, to red in the restframe optical/NIR, consistent with two distinct components, fit by power-laws with different attenuation: $A_V = 0.54 \pm 0.01$ (UV) and $A_V = 5.7 \pm 0.2$ (optical/NIR). Fitting the H$\alpha$ line requires both broad (full width at half-maximum $\sim 4300 \pm 300 km s^{-1}$) and narrow components, but none of the other emission lines, including H$\beta$, show evidence of broadness. We calculate $A_V = 1.1 \pm 0.2$ from the Balmer decrement using narrow H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$, and $A_V > 4.1 \pm 0.2$ from broad H$\alpha$ and upper limit on broad H$\beta$, consistent with the blue and red continuum attenuation respectively. Based on single-epoch H$\alpha$ linewidth, the mass of the central black hole is $8 \pm 1 \times 10^8 M_\odot$. Our findings are consistent with a multi-component model, where the optical/NIR and broad lines arise from a highly obscured, spatially unresolved region, likely a relatively massive active galactic nucleus, while the less obscured UV continuum and narrow lines arise, at least partly, from a small but spatially resolved star-forming host galaxy.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present rest-frame optical JWST Near-infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy of TN J1338−1942 at z = 4.1, one of the most luminous galaxies in the early universe with powerful extended radio jets. Previous observations showed evidence for strong, large-scale outflows based on its large (∼150 kpc) halo detected in Ly α, and high-velocity [O ii] emission features detected in ground-based spectroscopy. Our NIRSpec/IFU observations spatially resolve the emission line properties across the host galaxy. We find at least five concentrations of strong line emission, coinciding with discrete continuum features previously detected in imaging from Hubble Space Telescope and JWST, over an extent of ∼2 arcsec (∼15 kpc). The spectral diagnostics unambiguously trace active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity plus interaction between the interstellar medium and the radio jet as the dominant mechanisms for the ionization state and kinematics of the gas in the system. A secondary region of very high ionization lies at roughly 5 kpc away from the nucleus, and within the context of an expanding cocoon enveloping the radio lobe, this may be explained by strong shock-ionization of the entrained gas. However, it could also signal the presence of a second obscured AGN, which may offer an explanation for an intriguing outflow feature seen perpendicular to the radio axis. The presence of a dual supermassive black holes system in this galaxy would support that large galaxies in the early Universe quickly accumulated their mass through the merging of smaller units, at the centres of large overdensities. The inferred black hole mass to stellar mass ratio of 0.01−0.1 for TNJ1338 points to a more rapid assembly of black holes compared to the stellar mass of galaxies at high redshifts, consistent with other recent observations.

Abstract:JWST has revealed a class of numerous, extremely compact sources with rest-frame red optical/near-infrared (NIR) and blue ultraviolet (UV) colours nicknamed `little red dots'. We present one of the highest signal-to-noise ratio JWST NIRSpec prism spectra of a little red dot at $z=4.5319 and examine its NIRCam morphology to differentiate the origin of the UV and optical/NIR emission and elucidate the nature of the little red dot phenomenon. is unresolved ($r_e 0.17$\,kpc) in the three NIRCam long-wavelength filters but significantly extended ($r_e = 0.45 in the three short-wavelength filters, indicating a red compact source in a blue star-forming galaxy. The spectral continuum shows a clear change in slope, from blue in the optical/UV to red in the rest-frame optical/NIR, which is consistent with two distinct components fit by power laws with different attenuations: $A_V=0.38 (UV) and $A_V=5.61 (optical/NIR). Fitting the line requires both broad (full width at half maximum of $ $) and narrow components, but none of the other emission lines, including show evidence of broadness. We calculated $A_V = 0.9 from the Balmer decrement using narrow and and $A_V > 4.1 from broad and an upper limit on broad which is consistent with blue and red continuum attenuation, respectively. Based on a single-epoch line width, the mass of the central black hole is $\,M$_ Our findings are consistent with a multi-component model, in which the optical/NIR and broad lines arise from a highly obscured, spatially unresolved region, likely a relatively massive active galactic nucleus, while the less obscured UV continuum and narrow lines arise, at least partly, from a small but spatially resolved star-forming host galaxy.

Abstract:The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is capable of probing extremely early eras of our Universe, when the supersonic relative motions between dark matter and baryonic overdensities modulate structure formation (z ≳ 10). We study low-mass galaxy formation, including this "stream velocity," using high-resolution AREPO hydrodynamics simulations and present theoretical predictions of the UV luminosity function (UVLF) and galaxy stellar mass function down to extremely faint and low-mass galaxies (M UV ≳ −15, 10 4 M ⊙ ≤ M * ≤ 10 8 M ⊙ ). We show that, although the stream velocity suppresses early star formation overall, it induces a short period of rapid star formation in some larger dwarfs, leading to an enhancement in the faint end of the UVLF at z = 12. We demonstrate that JWST observations are close to this enhanced regime and propose that the UVLF may constitute an important probe of the stream velocity at high redshift for JWST and future observatories.

Abstract:We report the detection of a population of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in the Sunburst Arc, a strongly gravitationally lensed galaxy at redshift $z=2.37$. As the brightest known lensed galaxy, the Sunburst Arc has become an important cosmic laboratory for studying star and cluster formation, Lyman alpha (Lyalpha ) radiative transfer, and Lyman continuum (LyC) escape. Here, we present the first results of JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations of the Sunburst Arc, focusing on a stacked spectrum of the 12-fold imaged Sunburst LyC-emitting (LCE) cluster. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the Sunburst LCE cluster is a very massive, compact star cluster with $M_ dyn M_ odot $. Our age estimate of 4.2–4.5 Myr is much larger than the crossing time of $t_ cross 9 $ kyr, indicating that the cluster is dynamically evolved and consistent with it being gravitationally bound. We find a significant nitrogen enhancement of the low ionization state interstellar medium (ISM), with $ 0.09$, which is $ 0.8$ dex above typical values for H\ ii regions of a similar metallicity in the local Universe. We find broad stellar emission complexes around He\ ii 4686$ and C\ iv 5808$ with associated nitrogen emission; this is the first time WR signatures have been directly observed at redshifts above $ 0.5$. The strength of the WR signatures cannot be reproduced by stellar population models that only include single-star evolution. While models with binary evolution better match the WR features, they still struggle to reproduce the nitrogen-enhanced WR features. JWST reveals the Sunburst LCE cluster to be a highly ionized proto-globular cluster with low oxygen abundance and extreme nitrogen enhancement that hosts a population of WR stars, likely including a previously suggested population of very massive stars (VMSs), which together are rapidly enriching the surrounding medium.

Abstract:We use NIRCam imaging from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) to study the ionizing properties of a sample of 14 652 galaxies at | |⁠ , 90 per cent complete in stellar mass down to log(M | | /[M | |⁠ . Out of the full sample, 1620 of the galaxies have spectroscopic redshift measurements from the literature. We use the spectral energy distribution fitting code Prospector to fit all available photometry and infer galaxy properties. We find a significantly milder evolution of the ionizing photon production efficiency ( ⁠| |⁠ ) with redshift and UV magnitude than previously reported. Interestingly, we observe two distinct populations in | |⁠ , distinguished by their burstiness (given by SFR | | /SFR | |⁠ ). Both populations show the same evolution with z and M | |⁠ , but have a different | | normalization. We convolve the more representative | | relations (accounting for | | % of the sample), with luminosity functions from literature, to place constraints on the cosmic ionizing photon budget. By combining our results, we find that one of our models can match the observational constraints from the Ly | | forest at | |⁠ . We conclude that galaxies with M | | between | | and | |⁠ , adopting a reasonable escape fraction, can produce enough ionizing photons to ionize the Universe, without exceeding the required ionizing photon budget.

Abstract:We present NIRSpec/MSA observations from the JWST large-area survey WIDE, targeting the rest-frame UV-optical spectrum of Ulema, a radio-AGN host at redshift z=4.6348. The low-resolution prism spectrum displays high equivalent width nebular emission, with remarkably high ratios of low-ionisation species of oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur, relative to hydrogen; auroral O$^+$ emission is clearly detected, possibly also C$^+$. From the high-resolution grating spectrum, we measure a gas velocity dispersion $\sigma$~400 km s$^{-1}$, broad enough to rule out star-forming gas in equilibrium in the gravitational potential of the galaxy. Emission-line ratio diagnostics suggest that the nebular emission is due to a shock which ran out of pre-shock gas. To infer the physical properties of the system, we model simultaneously the galaxy spectral energy distribution (SED) and shock-driven line emission under a Bayesian framework. We find a relatively low-mass, star-forming system (M* = 1.4$\times$10^{10} M$_\odot$, SFR = 70 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$), where shock-driven emission contributes 50 per cent to the total H$\beta$ luminosity. The nebular metallicity is near solar - three times higher than that predicted by the mass-metallicity relation at z=4.6, possibly related to fast-paced chemical evolution near the galaxy nucleus. We find no evidence for a recent decline in the SFR of the galaxy, meaning that, already at this early epoch, fast radio-mode AGN feedback was poorly coupled with the bulk of the star-forming gas; therefore, most of the feedback energy must end up in the galaxy halo, setting the stage for future quenching.

Abstract:During the first 500 million years of cosmic history, the first stars and galaxies formed, seeding the Universe with heavy elements and eventually reionizing the intergalactic medium. Observations with JWST have uncovered a surprisingly high abundance of candidates for early star-forming galaxies, with distances (redshifts, $z$), estimated from multi-band photometry, as large as $z\approx 16$, far beyond pre-JWST limits. While generally robust, such photometric redshifts can suffer from degeneracies and occasionally catastrophic errors. Spectroscopic measurement is required to validate these sources and to reliably quantify physical properties that can constrain galaxy formation models and cosmology. Here we present JWST spectroscopy that confirms redshifts for two very luminous galaxies with $z > 11$, but also demonstrates that another candidate with suggested $z\approx 16$ instead has $z = 4.9$, with an unusual combination of nebular line emission and dust reddening that mimics the colors expected for much more distant objects. These results reinforce evidence for the early, rapid formation of remarkably luminous galaxies, while also highlighting the necessity of spectroscopic verification. The large abundance of bright, early galaxies may indicate shortcomings in current galaxy formation models, or deviation from physical properties (such as the stellar initial mass function) that are generally believed to hold at later times.
