Abstract:Background: Depressive symptoms commonly co‐occur with cognitive decline in older adults. However, prospective interrelationships between different cognitive function domains and depressive symptoms are not well understood. This study evaluated prospective interrelationships between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning components among individuals aged 50 years or older from a perspective of network analysis. Method: Longitudinal data from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging were analyzed. Depressive symptoms were measured with the eight‐item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Short–Depression Scale. Cognitive functions assessed included memory, orientation, and executive function. Contemporaneous network analyses were conducted using mixed graphical model, while a temporal network model was assessed using cross‐lagged panel network model. To identify important predictors and outcomes, centrality indices, including expected influence, out‐expected influence, and in‐expected influence, were calculated. Results: A total of 6,433 older adults were included in the network analysis. Baseline "Not enjoy life" (CESD‐6) was negatively associated with executive function at the follow‐up assessment. Moreover, improvements in "Everything was an effort" (CESD‐2) and "Loneliness" (CESD‐5) were related to less future decline of executive function and memory ability. Furthermore, analyses suggested targeting "Lack of happiness" (CESD‐4) could be useful in reducing the co‐occurrence of depression and cognitive decline among older adults. Conclusions: This network analysis study highlighted dynamic interrelationships between depressive symptoms and cognitive decline in older adults. Findings suggest that interventions targeting specific depressive symptoms may have the potential to alleviate declines in executive function and memory for this population.

Abstract:Abstract Background Depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment often coexisted in the elderly. This study investigates the effect of late-life depressive symptoms on risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods A total of 14,231 dementia- and MCI free participants aged 60+ from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe were followed-up for 10 years to detect incident MCI. MCI was defined as 1.5 standard deviation (SD) below the mean of the standardized global cognition score. Depressive symptoms were assessed by a 12-item Europe-depression scale (EURO-D). Severity of depressive symptoms was grouped as: no/minimal (score 0–3), moderate (score 4–5), and severe (score 6–12). Significant depressive symptoms (SDSs) were defined as EURO-D score ≥ 4. Results During an average of 8.2 (SD = 2.4)-year follow-up, 1,352 (9.50%) incident MCI cases were identified. SDSs were related to higher MCI risk (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.26, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.10–1.44) in total population, individuals aged 70+ (HR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.14–1.61) and women (HR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.08–1.51) in Cox proportional hazard model adjusting for confounders. In addition, there was a dose–response association between the severity of depressive symptoms and MCI incidence in total population, people aged ≥70 years and women ( p -trend <0.001). Conclusions Significant depressive symptoms were associated with higher incidence of MCI in a dose–response fashion, especially among people aged 70+ years and women. Treating depressive symptoms targeting older population and women may be effective in preventing MCI.

Persistent depressive symptoms and cognitive decline in older adults

Abstract:Background Little is known about the effect of persistent depressive symptoms on the trajectory of cognitive decline. Aims We aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between the duration of depressive symptoms and subsequent cognitive decline over a 10-year follow-up period. Method The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing cohort is a prospective and nationally representative cohort of men and women living in England aged ≥50 years. We examined 7610 participants with two assessments of depressive symptoms at wave 1 (2002–2003) and wave 2 (2004–2005), cognitive data at wave 2 and at least one reassessment of cognitive function (wave 3 to wave 7, 2006–2007 to 2014–2015). Results The mean age of the 7610 participants was 65.2 ± 10.1 years, and 57.0% were women. Of these, 1157 (15.2%) participants had episodic depressive symptoms and 525 participants (6.9%) had persistent depressive symptoms. Compared with participants without depressive symptoms at wave 1 and wave 2, the multivariable-adjusted rates of global cognitive decline associated with episodic depressive symptoms and persistent depressive symptoms were faster by –0.065 points/year (95% CI –0.129 to –0.000) and –0.141 points/year (95% CI –0.236 to –0.046), respectively ( P for trend < 0.001). Similarly, memory, executive and orientation function also declined faster with increasing duration of depressive symptoms (all P for trend < 0.05). Conclusions Our results demonstrated that depressive symptoms were significantly associated with subsequent cognitive decline over a 10-year follow-up period. Cumulative exposure of long-term depressive symptoms in elderly individuals could predict accelerated subsequent cognitive decline in a dose-response pattern. Declaration of interest None.
Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms and Subsequent Cognitive Decline in Older Adults: a Pooled Analysis of Two Longitudinal Cohorts

Abstract:Background the course of depression is variable, but it is unknown how this variability over time affects long-term cognitive decline. Objective to examine the relationship of different trajectories of depressive symptoms on rates of subsequent cognitive decline in older adults. Design population-based cohort study. Setting communities in the USA and England. Subjects 17,556 older adults from the Health and Retirement Study and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Methods depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and trajectories were calculated using group-based trajectory modelling. Global cognitive function and three cognitive domains of memory, executive function and temporal orientation were assessed for up to 18 years. Results five trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified. Compared with the 'non-depressed' trajectory, the 'worsening depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled beta = -0.016 standard deviation (SD)/year, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.021 to -0.010), 'persistent depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled beta = -0.016 SD/year, 95% CI: -0.024 to -0.008), and 'mild depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled beta = -0.008 SD/year, 95% CI: -0.014 to -0.003) were associated with faster rates of cognitive decline, while no such association was found for the 'improving depressive symptoms' trajectory (pooled beta = 0.001 SD/year, 95% CI: -0.010 to 0.012). Conclusions subthreshold depressive symptoms are associated with an increased rate of cognitive decline, while individuals who show improving depressive symptoms do not exhibit accelerated cognitive decline. These findings raise the possibility that maintaining depressive symptoms as low as possible and ignoring the clinical threshold, might mitigate cognitive decline in older adults.
Longitudinal Association Between Cognition and Depression in Patients With Late-Life Depression: A Cross-Lagged Design Study

Abstract:Objectives: Although previous studies have extensively confirmed the cross-sectional relationship between cognitive impairment and depression in depressed elderly patients, the findings of their longitudinal associations are still mixed. The purpose of this study was to explore the two-way causal relationship between depression symptoms and cognition in patients with late-life depression (LLD). Methods: A total of 90 patients with LLD were assessed across two time points (baseline and 1-year follow up) on measures of 3 aspects of cognition and depressive symptoms. The data were then fitted to a structural equation model to examine two cross-lagged effects. Results: Depressive symptoms predicted a decline in executive function (β = 0.864, p = 0.049) but not vice versa. Moreover, depressive symptoms were predicted by a decline in scores of working memory test (β = −0.406, p = 0.023), respectively. None of the relationships between the two factors was bidirectional. Conclusion: These results provide robust evidence that the relationship between cognition and depressive symptoms is unidirectional. Depressive symptoms may be a risk factor for cognitive decline. The decrease of information processing speed predicts depressive symptoms.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the association between dependency and cognitive function among older adults. A combined cross-sectional and longitudinal study was conducted in 26 locations in China. A total of 1160 participants aged ≥ 60 years were selected using a complex multistage sampling design, and 152 participants completed data collection after one year follow-up observation. A questionnaire was administered by face-to-face interviews. Dependency was measured using the standardized Chinese version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-II. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the association between dependency and cognitive function. Cox proportional hazards analysis was performed to identify causality between cognition function and dependency. Abstract:Background The bidirectional relationship between cognitive function and depressive symptoms has been extensively reported. However, the potential mechanisms are still not clear. We aim to longitudinally investigate whether physical activity mediates the bidirectional relationships between cognitive function and specific dimensions of depressive symptoms. Methods Data from 6787 individuals aged ≥50 of 2014/15 (T1), 2016/17 (T2), and 2018/19 (T3) waves of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Cognitive function was assessed by domains of memory, orientation in time, and executive function. Physical activity was measured with the intensity and frequency of participation. Specific dimensions of depressive symptoms were assessed by the 8-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, distinguishing between cognitive-affective and somatic symptoms. Cross-lagged panel models were used to investigate the mediating role of physical activity in the bidirectional relationships between cognitive function and two dimensions of depressive symptoms. Results Poorer cognitive function was indirectly associated with worse cognitive-affective symptoms (indirect effect = −0.002, 95% CI : −0.004, −0.001) through lower physical activity levels. Poorer cognitive function was also indirectly associated with worse somatic symptoms (indirect effect = −0.003, 95% CI : −0.006, −0.002) through lower physical activity levels, and the reverse mediation was observed as well (indirect effect = −0.002, 95% CI : −0.004, −0.001). Limitations There is no distinction between potential within-person and between-person effects. Conclusions Collaborative interventions of physical activity are beneficial in protecting cognitive function and mental health in older adults.

Abstract:Background Depression has been found to be associated with cognitive decline, but whether longer depressive durations lead to more severe cognitive declines has not been investigated. We aimed to estimate the association between depressive duration and cognitive decline in middle-aged and older Americans based on a large-scale representative population study. Methods We included 27,886 participants from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) in 2010–2018. Four datasets with 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-year consecutive interviews were further derived which involving persistent depressed and persistent depression-free individuals. Multiple linear regressions were constructed to estimate the effects of each depressive duration on the decline in global cognition, memory and mental status. Meta-regressions were performed to test the linear trends and to explore the heterogeneity between sex, age and baseline cognitive function along with subgroup analyses. Results Depressive durations of 2, 4, 6, and 8 years were associated with reductions in global cognitive scores of 0.62 points (95% CI: 0.51–0.73), 0.77 points (95% CI: 0.60–0.94), 0.83 points (95% CI: 0.55–1.10), and 1.09 points (95% CI: 0.63–1.55), respectively, indicating a linear trend ( P = 0.016). More pronounced associations were observed in middle-aged adults and females. Similar patterns were found in the associations between depressive duration and two subdomains, i.e., memory and mental health. Limitations This study is essentially a cross-sectional study and therefore cannot provide causal associations. Conclusions Longer depressive durations were linearly related to more severe cognitive declines. Timely intervention for depression targeted middle-aged adults can more effectively alleviate cognition-related burdens.

Abstract:With the rapid development of society, population aging has emerged as a significant global challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of baseline cognitive performance, current cognitive function, and cognitive decline on subsequent depressive symptoms. Data were obtained from participants aged 65 years and older in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), Wave 2014-2018. Of the 7,192 participants in Wave 2014, 1,627 were included in the analysis. Multivariate regressions were conducted to estimate the associations between cognitive measures and depressive symptoms. Our results indicated that baseline cognitive function was not associated with subsequent depressive symptoms, but current cognitive function was. Furthermore, participants who experienced significant cognitive decline were more likely to develop depressive symptoms. Covariates, including marital status, economic status, physical activity, and recreational activity, were also associated with subsequent depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that slowing cognitive decline is an effective strategy for preventing depressive symptoms in older adults, promoting their health and wellbeing.
Synergistic Effect of Cardiometabolic Multimorbidity and Depression on Longitudinal Cognitive Decline: Results from Two Longitudinal Asian Elderly Cohorts

Abstract:Introduction Cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) and depression are risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia. We investigated the independent and synergistic associations of CMM and depression on longitudinal cognitive deterioration in two Asian cohorts of elderly at varying cognitive status with differed underlying neuropathology. Methods Eligible memory clinic (Harmonization) and stroke patients (Coast) aged ≥50 completed cognitive and clinical assessments at baseline and up to 5 follow-up visits in 6 years. Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases were assessed. Presence of CMM was defined as having two or more CMDs. Depression was defined by Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) of ≥5. Biomarkers including cerebral beta-amyloid, cerebrovascular disease and ApoE genotype, were assessed by MRI and laboratory tests. Cognitive outcomes included cognitive trajectory patterns identified by the group-based trajectory model (GBTM) and the rate of change of global cognitive z-score. Multivariable logistic models and mixed models were conducted to assess the associations of CMM(+) and depression(+) with longitudinal cognitive decline. Stratification analysis by demographics and biomarkers was conducted. Results Among a total of 809 (Harmonization: 586, Coast: 223) participants, three cognitive trajectories were identified by the GBTM in each cohort. CMM(+) was independently associated with longitudinal cognitive decline. There was a significant interaction among CMM, depression and time with longitudinal cognition in both cohorts (ps of β(CMM*depression*time) < 0.05). Compared with reference group, CMM(+) and depression(+) were associated with patterns of rapid decline (OR=3.58, =95%CI=(1.64,7.81)) and slow decline (OR=3.32, 95%CI=(1.20,9.19)) in Harmonization, and decline/low stable (OR=4.01, 95%CI=(1.03,15.50)) in Coast. Participants with CMM(+) and depression(+) had a 0.24 (95%CI= -0.49, -0.01) and 0.13 (95%CI=-0.24,-0.01) units decline per year on global cognitive z-scores in Harmonization and Coast, respectively, compared with those with CMM(-) and depression(-). The combined effect between CMM and depression was more pronounced among older and male participants, as well as APOEε4 carriers. Discussion Our study demonstrated a synergistic effect between CMM and depression on longitudinal cognitive decline among elderly with differed underlying neuropathology. Targeting both CMM and depression in preventing cognitive decline may lead to greater effectiveness.

Abstract:Journal of Applied Gerontology, Ahead of Print. This study explores whether living situation modifies longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and changes in cognitive status across ten years in generally healthy, community-dwelling older adults. Participants (N = 687, Mage = 73.92 years) from the no-contact control condition of a multisite longitudinal study completed the Mini-Mental State Examination, Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale, and self-reported living situation. Multilevel models revealed that for older adults living alone, having clinically meaningful depressive symptoms was associated with greater decline in MMSE over ten years. However, reporting clinically meaningful depressive symptoms was not associated with decline in MMSE for adults who were living with others. These results suggest that living situation may be a modifying factor of cognitive change over time for older adults with clinically meaningful depressive symptoms. This highlights the need for targeted interventions for adults who may be at a greater risk of cognitive decline across older adulthood.

Abstract:Objectives: Few studies have examined the impact of late-life depression trajectories on specific domains of cognitive function. This study aims to delineate how different depressive symptom trajectories specifically affect cognitive function in older adults. Design: Prospective longitudinal cohort study Setting: Australia and the United States of America Participants: In total, 11,035 community-dwelling older adults with a mean age of 75 years Measurements: Depressive trajectories were modelled from depressive symptoms according to annual Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale 10 (CES-D-10) surveys. Four trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified: low ("nondepressed"), consistently mild ("subthreshold depression"), consistently moderate ("persistent depression"), and initially low but increasing ("emerging depression"). Global cognition (Modified Mini-Mental State Examination [3MS]), verbal fluency (Controlled Oral Word Association Test [COWAT]), processing speed (Symbol Digit Modalities Test [SDMT]), episodic memory (Hopkins Verbal Learning Test – Revised [HVLT-R]), and a composite z-score were assessed over a subsequent median 2 years. Results: Subthreshold depression predicted impaired performance on the SDMT (Cohen's d −0.04) and composite score (−0.03); emerging depression predicted impaired performance on the SDMT (−0.13), HVLT-R (−0.09), 3 MS (−0.08) and composite score (−0.09); and persistent depression predicted impaired performance on the SDMT (−0.08), 3 MS (−0.11), and composite score (−0.09). Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are associated with later impaired processing speed. These effects are small. Diverse depression trajectories have different impacts on cognitive function.

Abstract:Objectives To examine different trajectories of cognitive changes in elderly adults and explore the mediating role of depressive symptoms. Design A 7-year, community-based, prospective cohort study. Setting The downtown neighborhood of Shanghai, China. Participants A cohort of 394 older adults, with an average age of 71.8 years, was recruited in 2015 and has been reassessed every two years until 2021. Methods Latent Class Growth Analysis was used to model aging trajectories and Linear Mixed-Effect Models for Repeated Measures were used to estimate the least squares mean changes of cognition between subjects with depression (DEP + ) and without (DEP - ) across all visits. Results Three cognitive trajectories were identified: the "successful aging" (SA) trajectory had the best and most consistent performance (n=229, 55.9%); the "normal aging" (NA) trajectory showed lower but stable cognition (n=141, 37.3%); while the "cognitive decline" (CD) trajectory displayed poor and declining cognition (n=24, 6.8%). Depressive symptoms were found to be influential across all trajectories. In the CD trajectory, the MoCA scores of the DEP + group increased in within-group comparisons and were significantly higher than those of the DEP - group at visits 1 and 3 in between-group comparisons. A similar trend was observed in the NA trajectory, though it did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions Our research suggests that mild and decreasing depressive symptoms can be a reversible factor that might slow down the irreversible cognitive decline in the elderly. Therefore, we suggest that even mild depressive symptoms in the elderly should be monitored and detected.

Abstract:Abstract Objectives The bidirectionality between self-perceptions of aging and health-related outcomes may depend on age group. Therefore, we tested such bidirectionality among individuals in late midlife (50–64 years), young-old age (65-74 years), and old-old age (75+ years), taking advantage of the construct of Awareness of Age-Related Change (AARC) and its 2-dimensionality in terms of AARC-gains and AARC-losses. Various conceptualizations of physical, mental, and cognitive functioning were used as outcomes. Methods Data from 2 measurement occasions (2019 and 2020) from the UK PROTECT study for individuals in late midlife (N = 2,385), young-old age (N = 2,430), and old-old age (N = 539) were used. Data on self-reported functional difficulties, depression, anxiety, and performance on four computerized cognitive tasks (i.e., verbal reasoning, paired associate learning, self-ordered search, and digit span) providing a score for verbal reasoning and a score for working memory were analyzed using cross-lagged panel models. Results Across all 3 age groups, the bidirectional associations of AARC-gains with indicators of functioning were not significant, whereas higher AARC-losses significantly predicted slightly greater functional difficulties and higher depression and anxiety levels. Higher AARC-losses predicted slightly poorer Verbal Reasoning only in old-old age and poorer Working Memory predicted slightly higher AARC-losses only in young-old age. The remaining associations of AARC-losses with cognitive tasks were not statistically significant. Discussion In accordance with previous research targeting other indicators of self-perceptions of aging, this study supported a stronger impact of AARC-losses on indicators of physical functioning and mental health than vice versa from midlife to old-old age.

The mediating and moderating effects of depressive symptoms on the prospective association between cognitive function and activities of daily living disability in older adults

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to examine to what extent depressive symptoms mediated and moderated the association between cognitive function and activities of daily living (ADL) disability in older adults. Methods: In older participants from the China Health and Longitudinal Retirement Survey (CHARLS), structural equation modeling and multiple regression were performed to examine the mediating and moderating role of depressive symptoms (measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) in the association between baseline cognitive function (episodic memory, attention, orientation to time, and visuospatial ability) and endpoint disability in basic ADL (BADL) or instrumental ADL (IADL). Results: Over a 2-year follow-up, among 1677 participants (67.5 +/- 6.0 years old) free of BADL disability and 1194 participants (66.9 +/- 5.6 years old) free of IADL disability, 8.3% and 22.9% developed BADL disability and IADL disability, respectively. Good baseline cognitive performance was significantly associated with the reduced incidence of BADL/IADL disability. The indirect effects of baseline depressive symptoms explained 16.9% and 14.5% of the total effect between cognition and BADL and IADL dependency, respectively. The Johnson-Neyman technique identified a threshold of 7.88 for endpoint depressive symptoms, beyond which the protective effect of baseline cognitive function on BADL emerged. Conclusions: In older adults, good cognitive function reduces the risk of BADL/IADL disability. Depressive symptoms downregulate the protective effect of cognitive function on BADL/IADL over time. Intervention techniques focusing on the simultaneous improvement of cognitive dimensions and depression help improve ADL difficulty and prevent disability in older adults.
Depression Trajectories, Genetic Risk, and Cognitive Performance in Older Adults: Multilevel Model with a 10-Year Longitudinal Cohort

Abstract:Introduction: Cognitive performance in older ages is strongly affected by individuals' genetic predispositions. We investigated whether depression trajectories were associated with subsequent cognitive performance independent of participants' genetic predispositions. Methods: Participants from the Health and Retirement Study with European ancestry and aged over 50 were included in the analysis. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the 6-year trajectories were fitted using latent class linear mixed models. Linear multilevel regression was applied to model the associations between depression trajectory and subsequent cognitive performance. Stratified analyses were performed to investigate these associations in participants with different genetic predispositions of cognitive performance and APOE ε4 allelic status. Results: A total of 5,942 eligible participants were included in the study. Four depression trajectories were identified. Compared with the nondepression trajectory, all other depression trajectories were associated with worse cognitive performance (β [95% CI]: mild-depression trajectory: -0.20 [-0.56, -0.06], p = 0.007; worsening-depression trajectory: -0.29 [-0.47, -0.12], p = 0.001; persistent-depression trajectory: -0.32 [-0.53, -0.13], p = 0.001). Although these associations were independent of participants' inherent genetic risk, the participants with a low polygenetic score for cognitive performance were more likely to have an enhanced association between depression trajectories and cognitive decline. Similar relationships were also found in APOE ε4 noncarriers. Conclusion: Among older participants with European ancestry, even a mild-depression trajectory was associated with worse cognitive performance. Early intervention in participants with any degree of depression might benefit regarding preventing cognitive performance decline.
The Longitudinal Association Between Physical Health and Depressive Symptoms over Eight Years: Evidence from the Health and Retirement Study

Abstract:Background: The bidirectional relationship between physical health (PH) and depressive symptoms (DS) remains unclear. Methods: Data were extracted from the Health and Retirement Study in the United States. PH was measured with a composite of chronic diseases, functional limitations and difficulties in basic and instrumental activities of daily living, and DS with a modified Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression. Latent growth curve models (LGCM) were employed to examine how the change in PH or DS affected their mutual trajectories in later life. In addition, multilevel models were utilized. Results: There were 6144 participants included, with an average age of 69.82 +/- 6.85 years at baseline, of whom 3686 (59.99 %) were women. PH scores increased from 5.65 in 2010 to 7.72 in 2018, while depression scores increased from 1.14 to 1.31. LGCM results showed that the initial levels of PH and DS were associated (beta = 0.558, P < .001), and the initial level of PH could predict the trajectory of DS (beta = 0.089, P < .001). Likewise, the initial level of DS was also related to initial PH (beta = -0.563, P < .001) but couldn't predict the trajectory of PH. Furthermore, the slopes of PH and DS were predicted bidirectionally by each other. Two-level logistic models further demonstrated the bidirectional association between PH and DS. Conclusion: There was a bidirectional association between physical health and depressive symptoms, which highlights the necessity of comprehensive health management for older adults with poor physical health or depression symptoms.

Abstract:Background Adolescent depression is a common mental health problem and is sometimes associated with cognitive impairments. However, existing research regarding the association between depression status in adolescents and cognitive performance over the subsequent years is relatively paucity. Methods The present study used longitudinal data from four waves (2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018) of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) to explore the associations between adolescent depression status in 2012 and cognitive performance (measured by immediate word recall, delayed word recall, number series tests, mathematics, and vocabulary) over the subsequent years. A total of 1055 (51.72 %), 1115 (54.66 %), and 879 (43.09 %) of the 2040 adolescents identified in 2012 were followed up in 2014, 2016, and 2018, respectively. Results We found that adolescent depression status consistently showed a negative association with cognitive performance at the measurement points over six years. The associations were retained for most cognitive outcomes after controlling for a variety of confounding factors (adolescents, parental, and family characteristics). Conclusions The findings of this study provide more evidence of the association between depression status in adolescents and cognitive performance. Additionally, it highlights the importance of focusing on cognitive impairment in patients with depression more broadly, especially during adolescence, a critical period for cognitive development.

Longitudinal co-development of mental and cardio-metabolic health from childhood to young adulthood

Abstract:Objective: Depressive symptoms and cardio-metabolic risk factors often co-occur. However, our understanding of the potential mechanisms and temporal dynamics underlying their co-development remains elusive. Method: This population-based cohort study examined bidirectional longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and cardio-metabolic risk factors from age 10 to 25 years, using prospective data from the ALSPAC Study. Participants with at least one (of six) follow-up measurement for each outcome were included in the analyses. We measured depressive symptoms through self- as well as parent-reports, and assessed several cardio-metabolic risk factors (including adiposity measures, lipid profiles and inflammation). Results: Among our 7970 (47% male) participants, we found bidirectional, within-person associations between self-reported depressive symptoms and adiposity (i.e., fat/lean mass index, but not body mass index), across the study period. Adiposity was more stable over time (β [range] = 0.75 [0.54; 0.84]), compared to depressive symptoms (0.26 [0.12; 0.38]), and it had a stronger prospective (i.e., cross-lagged) association with future depressive symptoms (0.07 [0.03, 0.13]) compared to that between depressive symptom and future adiposity (0.04 [0.03, 0.06]). The magnitude of these associations reached its peak between 14 and 16 years. We did not find evidence of cross-lagged associations in either direction between depressive symptoms and waist circumference, insulin, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol or C-reactive protein. Conclusions: These findings suggest a bidirectional relationship between depressive symptoms and cardio-metabolic risk factors, particularly adiposity (i.e., fat/lean mass). Adiposity showed a stronger prospective association with future depressive symptoms, than vice versa, however their relationship revealed more reciprocal than previously thought.

Abstract:Purpose The objective of this study was to determine how anxiety and/or depressive symptoms differentially affect specific cognitive domains over time in persons with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). Design A longitudinal, observational study was conducted using data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center-Uniform Data Set. Mean follow-up was 4.1 +/- 2.4 years. Methods Using information from a total of 1401 participants (age 74.0 +/- 8.2 years), linear mixed-effects regression models were used to assess longitudinal changes in global cognition, episodic memory, attention, language, and executive function by baseline psychological (anxiety [A] and/or depressive [D]) symptoms in individuals with SCD. Reference was the group having no symptoms (A-/D-). Findings The A+/D- group was not associated with any cognitive changes. The A-/D+ group was associated with a greater decline in episodic memory and executive function. The A+/D+ group had a greater decline in attention. Changes in global cognition and language were not predicted by any psychological symptoms. Conclusions Depressive symptoms predicted lower episodic memory and executive function. Clinical Relevance Nurses need to pay attention to depressive symptoms in older adults with SCD because managing depressive symptoms may help protect against cognitive decline more typical of early Alzheimer's dementia.
