Abstract:The stability of superwettability membranes is influenced by pressure, chemical corrosion, and adverse environmental conditions. Membrane stability against superwettability loss is crucial for extending the life of an oil-water filtration system. This review primarily examines the factors influencing the stability of carbon nanoparticle-modified metal-based membranes. It proposes strategies for enhancing membrane stability through 3D support-protected anti-abrasion and anti-abrasion coatings construction. The robust stability depends on the construction of networks with diverse structures and pore sizes, covalent bonding and strong electrostatic force connections, and other factors. Additionally, the mechanism of emulsion breaking is examined, and summarized membrane properties. The functional clusters inlaid within the membrane are shielded by a robust metallic framework under the 3D support-protected anti-abrasion strategy, allowing the membrane to be reusable up to 50 times under sandpaper abrasion and tape peeling experiments, with a separation efficiency exceeding 99 %. Under harsh temperatures and corrosive conditions, it exhibits exceptional stability and fouling resistance, with separation efficiency and permeation fluxes as high as 99.81 % and 3946 L m−2 h−1 for diverse O/W emulsions. For enhancing and evaluating membrane stability, current challenges, and future research areas are also mentioned. Therefore, this review serves as a guide for creating stable oil-water separation membranes.
